Messy food tray plays, no one is cleaning it or monitoring it from time to time. Som customers are just messy. Place atmosphere is cool and wide chair and table to dine. We went to China Moon for an early supper, having found it adequate to quite good on two other occasions. The dessert options were good, as were my wife's dumplings & my BBQ "spare ribs". The fried rice tasted okay, but was barely warm. The rest was barely warm, tasteless, & my Mongolian Pork & General Tso's were mushy as well. We're home & about to cook a hot, tasty meal after already paying $35 for food we won't try again. read more

The food was cold when we arrived at 445pm. The Crab Rangoon was pasty white. We told the server the food was cold when she picked up our still full plates, but she just walked away. The arrogant young man at the counter insisted we were wrong because no one else complained and said we had eaten so had to pay. We paid full price and asked for the manager's name. He refused to give it to us. We've been there several times, and it has formerly been ok. We definitely won't be back. My advice is to skip this place. read more

I'm going with 4 stars for a number of reasons. It's a buffet and if you expect anything beyond buffet food then you'll be disappointed. That being said there are a number of reasons I was impressed. They had a massive variety here. Shockingly diverse. The staff keep everything fresh and your table clear. Kids love getting to pick their own food and they even had some healthier dishes with veggies. They also had an impressive desert selection. Overall good taste was pretty good. The time-lapse from arrival to first bite was maybe 3 minute which is awesome when you have hungry kids. Would have liked to see some truly spicy dishes. The restaurant was bustling, completely filled with patrons. Folks were jammed around the piping hot buffet station with a line of 12-14 people waiting inside the front door to be seated. Every table was taken, plenty of great Chinese food offered, and lots of smiles were seen. What a fantastic buffet it is! Fruit, salad, soup, sushi, even pizza to start, with all the traditional scores of goodies one would expect in this first class Chinese restaurant to fill you, including seafood and dim sum. Amazing dim sum. What a treat 5 miles from Canada! The dessert table is loaded with classics, more than a score of them, such as puddings, cakes, ice cream, and more. The staff was friendly and did not rush me w/a bill. In fact the waitress said, "Take your time." Will return again and again. Am very happy to find this all one can eat lunch buffet for just $8.23/tax inc (Mar 2020). And one can get the buffet to go ($5.29 a lb). You'll love it! read more

Oh what the hell! Go ahead! Ensconce yourself among the corpulent masses and dig in hearty-hard to the most insipid, average Chinese food you will find this side of the Great Wall. This is not haute cuisine, nor the Chinese equivalent of, but it's not meant to be ... China Moon Buffet is all about bulk, and it's about whims, and an appetite as big as the country itself, and if you eat there once every six months, and don't leave hating yourself, then your momentary cri d'coeur has been masterfully answered. Any more often then see your cardiologist and spiritual counselor, in that order, ASAP. I indulge my very infrequent seafood urge. The cocktail shrimp, actually miniature equivalents thereof, were elegantly offered on ice in a tray immediately adjacent to jello squares on one side and a mountain of some sort of cool whip product on the other. Who doesn't naturally associate this ménage a trois? There are chicken with peanut butter, popcorn chicken, chicken and mushrooms, chicken and a bit of General Tso ... ("The Tso that can be named is not the true Tso ..."). I tried none of them. I DID, however, eat a FTon of some sort of cubed crab pieces (or a reasonable facsimile) with a bunch of other unidentifiable goodies packed in in a clam shell. Made a right pig of myself on those bad boys. Also, there were shrimp with a light breaded linoleum type coating cooked in oil, dredged in a butter byproduct, then cooked again oil. I had 742,603 of those. Sure, there's pork fried rice, crab Rangoon, trays of broccoli in a variety of brown, garlicy sauces and various iterations of chicken, there was a lonely pice of sushi on one tray, repasentin' for an entire island country. There were dumplings and dim sum (tried none), there was even an anachronistic small cheese pizza hangin out along the edge - a family of Widettes converged on that poor thing like wolves on a Russian peasant, and it was no more. BUT, and this is the marvel of China Moon, another appeared almost instantly! The staff is indefatigably pleasant and friendly. I'm afraid that my request for club soda set them back momentarily, but they came off the ropes with an unsweetened iced tea in hand and I was well pleased. If you dine alone, as I did, do not take an actual book, at least not one you might ever consider loaning out. Take your Kindle instead. The waiter, with keen prescience, laid out a pile of paper napkins that I found awaiting ny return to seat carrying my third helping. He knew his mark. I was able to swipe pages with my relatively clean pinky whilst grasping nappy with other digits, never ceasing the rotation of stuff-masticate-drool-dab with my mouth. Was able to successfully bi-task the Times with gluttony quite fasciley. I'm tempted to award four stars cuz I enjoyed myself so much but that would hardly be appropriate and might even insult the spirit of China Moon. I will certainly return, but not at least for six months. read more

As far as Chinese food buffets in the Newport VT / Derby VT area, you are not gonna get any better than this place. The good thing is that it is actually a good Chinese buffet for your money. I am a Chicago local so I have had my experiences in numerous Chinese buffets. To me they are cookie cutter buffets serving the same stuff; General Tso's Chicken, Mongolian beef, egg rolls, etc. China Moon buffet is the same as the others, but better! Why? Because this place has a roast beef carving station in addition to everything else. You heard it right, a roast beef carving station that serves very good roast beef along with the king crab legs, egg drop soup, etc. Very impressive to me. This is why I am giving China Moon Buffet in Derby, VT 4 stars. I would have given it 3 stars but the roast beef plus the very clean tables, etc deserve the extra star in my book. Probably the most important thing about Derby's China Moon is that unless you have a GPS fix on it, it is not easy to find. It would be literally "out in the woods" if there were any woods in the area, but it certainly is "out in the field." I suspect a developer has big plans for the area, otherwise it would make little sense plunking a shopping center, anchored by a Price Chopper supermarket, almost out of sight of the main drag. Most people would be arriving from Exit 28 on I-91, but if they just head down Route 5 (Derby Road) they'll sail right past. The trick is to keep an eye out for a McDonalds on the right and turn right just past it. That's Quarry Rd and will take you to this "Lost" shopping center. It's only a half mile or so from the exit, but Sacagawea, herself, couldn't find it on the first try without a GPS or detailed directions. Now, comes the big question, "Is it worth it?" I'd give a tentative "yes." The problem, you see, is that it's hard for a buffet to be outstanding. There are no sommeliers to advise you on your drinks. (I do hope China Moon was kidding when they put Sam Adams under "imported beers." I know Vermont is out of the way, but Boston IS in the same country.) The wait staff need not tell you about the offerings; you can see... and taste... to your heart's content. On the other hand, you know it's not "fresh cooked." That takes even more self-deception than even a political ideologue is capable of when looking at a steam table. Even a few "exotic" items are a risk, as a buffet is driven by demand, and I'd wonder how long something only a few people would like has been waiting for me to come along so I don't ask for more than the "usual suspects". That said, the offerings are of a suitable variety. There are two, double-sided steam tables and another pair of tables for chilled offerings. The food seemed reasonable fresh. In fact, I saw an employee remove a tray that was still a third full, arguing that the management has a good quality control system. The staff was polite and efficient. My dirty plates vanished as soon as I put them aside and my drink was quickly refilled. For a tab under $20 for two, for lunch, I was satisfied. read more

We've tried this buffet seven times in the past and it varies each time (probably depending on who is cooking). Today was the last time we will ever go there again. First, we arrived around 3:15pm just as lunch was winding down. Sparse offerings at the buffet but sufficient for our party of three. My wife noticed that the tilapia was spoiled, due to a foul odor. Clearly, the fish was no good but they cooked and served it anyway. My wife quietly informed the waitress about it and they removed the dish, which was probably a good idea for the health of their customers. They stiffed us on the check and overcharged at the dinner rate, even though there was barely any food for lunch. To make a long story short, we will never go back...but perhaps the VT health department should! read more

This chinese buffet was really good. The crab legs were very huge (as big as the ones served in Virginia Beach, Virginia and the Outer Banks - however, the price was only $11.45 instead of what we paid at the beaches of around $28-$30). The crab legs were also very well stocked. Unlike many buffets, they keep the crab legs full and we never had to wait for them. Very good assortment of chinese food to choose from and they had premium scoopable ice cream in about four flavors. We will definetly be back if we are in the area again. I found the grease-laden food to have very few healthful items. The one vegetable that was served was almost cold and drenched in oil. Although the menu does offer steamed vegetables and white rice, it is not on the buffet table. If you are not a meat eater you will starve. China Moon is not a healthful place to eat. If you must eat there go at around noon when the food is freshly cooked and put out. If you go later or in the evening, its slim pickings and it has been out for a while. read more
