I went into China Star Express& Grill with no expectations at all. I was hungry and diabetic so I was just looking to fill my belly and get back on the road. The place was very clean and not busy. The food is served cafeteria-style and looked very fresh! I was very surprised that you could choose to pass on the rice or noodles and get steamed vegetables instead! My diabetes thanks you!! I got the sautéed pork, green beans, an egg roll, and a bottled drink for a very reasonable price! I will definitely keep China Star in the rotation! read more

First time eating here. From the reviews we thought this would be an ok place to eat. Lobby very clean . Tables bussed. It was a buffet We've found that any type of buffet doesn't always have the best food, taste or fresh wise. They do also cook to order we found out ( too late ). Server ready to take our orders while we decided. We went with option 1, 1 entree, rice or lo mien and for a dollar more an egg roll, $9.29 each. Lots of rice and noodles, a good portion of whatever entree you get. Husband got a none too fresh looking beef and broccoli, veg. fried rice and an egg roll. I got lo mien, chicken and shrimp w/veg. and an egg roll. Water and Pepsi were the drinks. Our tab was $23.00 and some change w/o the tip. Wanted the food to be good so bad as we really like Chinese style food. It wasn't bad, just no taste. Rice not bad, and that's it. Beef w/ broccoli was almost unable to be eaten. Broccoli was tough and overcooked, beef had no flavor, was cut in large pieces and tough. Lo mien noodles had no flavor w/o soy sauce. Chicken and shrimp were tender, still no good flavor. We will not be going back to this restaurant. So, still looking for a good reasonably priced stand alone ( no chains) Chinese restaurant in Tyler. We only make it to Tyler for doctor's appointments, so it might take us a while . We understand everyone has a different opinion/view/taste of food and this is ours. Thanks for reading. read more

I always try to give a fair rating. I was dissatisfied with the food and facility the food was way too salty. The tables were dirty snd the bathroom needs a serious upgrade. Everything seems to taste the same. The soup was the best thing after trying several choices. read more

I was here twice in the last month. First I tried the "buffet line," which made me think of all-you-can-eat buffet, but it's not. Their buffet just means you can pick 1-3 entrees from the 10 items in the buffet, plus a starch. It's clear in the menu, and the price is totally reasonable ($6-9). The second time, I wanted to try ordering from the menu. I got the Garlic Shrimp & Scallop. Mmm! I like how this restaurant has both the traditional Chinese style I'm used to (order "family style"), but the buffet's great for speed and cost. Both times, the workers were friendly. I usually dont write reviews, but after so many great ones sending us to try this place we decided too. All I can say if your reading this and looking for a place for Chinese food pass this one up. First of all a good scrubbing is needed, its NASTY AS HELL. The food was terrible. The fried rice was'nt even fried and wasn't brown like it should be. Basically all the sauced meats have nothing but sugar sweet sauce and no other flavor. There's a disgusting fishy smell when you enter the building. I started to make a U turn at that point . There was also a police officer outside the building in full tactical gear. Im not sure if that area is unsafe or something covert was going on. Dont waste your time here. If I could grade this restaurant, and I use that term lightly, a 0, I would. Our first and last experience with this place was a take out order of over $60. We ordered 2 different types of soup and 4 different entrees. The only part of this "meal" that was edible was the egg drop soup. The fried chips that came with the soup were stale. The food smelled awful and the texture was disgusting. Since I was 17 miles away, I couldn't return it. We dumped it down the garbage disposal as I wouldn't even feed this to my dogs. I was afraid they would get sick. I feel they gave us food that had been sitting for days and ready to go bad, if not already. I would never recommend the China Star Express and Grill to anyone. read more

OK I got the hot n sour soup medium for 2 bucks and added half a small container of the gen.tso sauce as it was sour but I add hot. In a word YUM. Next I got egg rolls they are frozen and not made in house. They are just OK. The plum sauce was good though. My wife had the mei fun chicken it was OK once but a wierd Indian tumeric dish with nuts. I got Mongolian beef and added the rest of the hot. It was awesome, with huge chunks of real beef not hamburger. The fried rice was hohum nothing tasty or special. Judging by the limited available parking adjacent to the store and the line inside, I thought "must be pretty good". I ordered the steamed dumplings and watched him take the pre-made dumplings out of the freezer, we made eye contact, that was awkward lol. So I thought I would compensate the lack of "homemade-ness" with a couple egg rolls. Except those were obviously frozen too. They were bland and the fried part was far from crunchy like one that's been house-made. I don't know, maybe it's just me but I'm not into buying frozen food from a restaurant. It's like me going to Walmart and getting a bunch of lean cuisines, thawing them, and putting them on a buffet table and calling myself a restaurant. Just seems like a waste of money. But if you're looking for a low key, relatively cheap Chinese lunch/dinner, their other stuff on the buffet looked passable. Imagine the Chinese restaurants that are usually in food courts at the mall. This is just one of those. I'd rather go to Panda Express any day though. Love this place over nasty China cafe or the tasteless China king & Pekins by the way found a hair in my food. So I reported them to the city health inspector. read more
