It does not look like much and is definitely not on the better side of town. The place offers a very American Chinese menu, but it was pretty long on the vegetable and tofu side compared to a lot of cheap Chinese joints, which is what inspired me to give them a try. And their Kung Pao tofu delivered all that I could have hoped of it. A packed full container of finely cubed fried tofu (one hack for anyone that doesn't know how to make tofu taste good: you should probably cut it smaller to give it more surface area to absorb whatever sauce you're cooking it in) as well as some diced carrots, baby corn, and quite a lot of peanuts in a brown sauce with just a bit of spice. I also got some sesame noodles, which is one of the more basic versions of the dish I've had, which is basically just noodles with a dollop of spiced peanut butter to spread around and coat them with. This probably sounds like a dig, but it's pretty satisfying and the noodles themselves had a nice soft texture. It was, as I would expect, a ton of food for the money. Basically the whole interior of this little building was devoted to what looked like a clean and organized kitchen. Fancy? Authentic? No, but American Chinese cuisine is a subculture of its own, and this seems a good example of it. I definitely think it would be worth returning to try their other tofu dishes. read more

Discovered this place after looking over it for far far too long. This is classic americanized chineese that was the norm 20 years ago. When i check out a new place i always start with the same order.. Hot and sour soup/ egg roll with either dumplings or fried rice. That will tell me everything i need to know about a place. I immidiately went back to get the full experience. Soup was good, but not quite the recipe i prefer. Egg roll was on point. The dumplings were fantastic. These are the dumplings i've been looking for ever since most other places switched to a thinner skinned gyoza style dumpling. These were thick and meaty and cooked perfectly. This is the place i have been looking for to scratch my 'chineese food' from childhood itch. Also the lady at the counter was extremely nice, very friendly, and as soon as i walked in she gave me the impression this was going to be the right place. Its extremely small, but the atmosphere is very quaint - you can tell they have been there for awhile and i love it. Hole in the wall does not do it justice. there are technically tables, but you'd need to be very committed to the experience to dine in - although we seriously considered it. I feel bad for writing this review, but I feel I wouldn't help Yelp if I only wrote on the restaurants that I absolutely loved. This place, unfortunately, did not meet expectations for "good" Chinese food. I ordered shrimp and broccoli, and an egg roll. First impression was that the egg roll was small, probably the smallest egg roll I've ever had... there was very little filling, (probably due to the size) and I tasted mostly just the outer layer, which was crispy, but had a burnt taste. Unfortunately, wasn't impressed with the main dish, either. Was constantly adding duck sauce and soy sauce to add more flavor. I'm sorry to post this, but if you've had your fair share of Chinese takeout in your lifetime, then perhaps check another place out if you don't want to be disappointed. I stopped on the way home from work to grab dinner. When I arrived there was no one else there so ordering was a super fast process. The gentleman at the counter was friendly and greeted me right away. I got the combination sweet and sour chicken which comes with an eggroll and fried rice, I also got an order of steamed dumplings. It was still piping hot when I got it home. The dumplings were really good as was the rest of the food. The eggroll was nice and crisp, wasn't greasy at all. The sweet and sour chicken wasn't greasy either. It is a hole in the wall but what a hidden gem it is! When I left the woman that works there smiled and said have a good night. read more

This is not my favorite "Chinese" food restaurant in town, it is however the closest to my house and they deliver to the East End. (Gotta love that!). I suggest the fried thing: crab Rangoon, fried dumplings, sweet and sour chicken, egg rolls...things like that. I also usually get a general tso's chicken (also fried). I don't recommend the egg drop soup or the sweet n sour soup (two of my favorites at other places). The wonton soup is decent, but again I have had better. The woman running the show knows her stuff. She's sweet, but doesn't speak a lot of English so keep that in mind if you have special requests. read more

I have never had such a bad experience at any Chinese take-out as I did today at China Star. I feel compelled to tell others to stay away from this place. It was 2:00 p.m. when I stopped in and ordered a lunch special, "Shrimp and Broccoli". There was one lady there.....working the cash register and cooking.....without gloves. I asked her if she could please make it spicy. I went to my car and opened the bag. There was a tiny cold eggroll that was nasty. I couldn't eat it. Then when I opened the container for the Shrimp and Broccoli, I could see that the broccoli was old. Also, there were only 2 small shrimp in the dish......and they were tough and very rubbery. The rice was nasty and old. And she did not make it spicy, as I requested. I ate a few bites and threw it in the trash when I got home. I've been having terrible stomach aches since I ate those few bites. Stay away from this place. It's awful. read more

Fantastic place run by a lovely lady. It's my go to Chinese place in Lexington. I haven't had anything bad on their menu.

Very courteous delivery guy. We greatly enjoyed our Singapore Noodles (usually done with pork, chicken and shrimp but they were happy to exchange our meat protein for Tofu, and the flavor was still excellent with their curry spice!). DEFINITELY recommend this entree. We also ordered the Mushroom, Broccoli and Eggplant with Garlic. On the menu it is signified to be spicy, but we'll be ordering it with extra spice next time as it was quite mild in my opinion and I tend to order my spice at a 4 or 5 on a scale of 1-5. This being said, the flavor was still delectable and it came with complementary white rice. Crab Rangoon was great, not too creamy, with good proportioning of filling and breading. overall, YUM!! read more

This place is great. The folks are very friendly and helpful. I didn't know much about Chinese food; Beef and Broccoli was about all I knew. They suggested some items, and they are great. The boneless spare ribs are delicious. They almost melt in your mouth and taste like candy. The Mien Fun is a rice noodle dish served a few ways. Delish!! Seriously, this is a great place. A decent carry out (only) place. We were in town for a horse event and though we would try it because of the high rating. It is NOT a sit down restaurant, but a divvy carry out joint in a sketchy neighborhood. The only 2 tables are primarily for people waiting to pick up food. The staff was friendly and accommodating enough, so we ate there, but definitely would not do so again. They had no ice for the drinks. The bathroom is in the kitchen (literally) and stinks to high heaven. The food is fairly good if you are carrying out, but don't plan to eat there. read more

I lived a few blocks away from this place for a couple of years - I ate here often - and it is still my favorite Chinese take out place. (It's not as good as my favorite Sit-down, slow food Chinese place though) Pretty much everything is CONSISTENTLY good - beef lo mein, general tso's chicken, shrimp toast, and any of the mein fun. The hot & sour soup is the only thing that is hit or miss - Sometimes it is the absolute best in Lex, and other times it is wretched. Prices are good, and lunch prices are better and while it isn't my absolute favorite Chinese food, it is definitely my favorite quick place to grab lunch or pick up dinner on the way home. read more
