    Vegetable spring roll

Lexington is not graced with a ton of great global cuisine, so this new Chinese offering caught my eye. It's embedded amongst some condos and I don't remember what restaurant was here before this one, but it is more upscale than any other Asian restaurant in Lexington that I know of. Having some travel to do, however, I got takeout, which was ready in a timely fashion. The packaging did not hold up well and I lost a bit of food when the bag broke. But thankfully not most of it. Their rendition of ma po tofu was better than basic, with a complex peppery flavor that I couldn't wait to finish. There was a bit of mushrooms and peas in there, but it was mostly tofu, which I like. Ordering spring rolls wasn't a bad idea either as I needed a bit of cabbage and carrots. The menu had several interesting vegetarian options and on the strength of my experience, they might be worthwhile.

I must say first of all I was impressed for the service with this place having a soft opening on February 28, 2024. We stopped here while in Lexington for a Dr visit. While not going as smooth as everyone would like the service was acceptable being newly opened. One reminder for everyone who has issued with Gluten, this is not possible as the kitchen environment is open. However not a concern for us. We started out with Steamed Dumplings pork and chicken, a little soggy but tasted great. The Siu Mai Pork was much better. I initially was going to try the Kung Po but it was not indicated spicy, so I opted for the General Tso's instead and my wife had the Szechuan Sytle chicken. The General Tso was full of flavor with a hint of ginger but did live up to the spicy. The Szechuan chicken has a spicy but sweet flavor that should distinguished it from Hunan or Kung Pao. The thick texture with a nice tone of sweet and tangy flavor made it. We also got the Peking Duck for Two with Scallions and Hosin Sauce to go for later. The Peking Duck was mouth watering tender and not chewy or tough, It was how ever a little oily. All in all a fair experience, that will hopfully contiue to improve.

Food was good, drinks were overpriced. $100 for 2 people, 2 cosmos and 2 makers mark. Food was $40, drinks $60. Probably won't visit again.

On Sunday, July 5, we went to J2C for lunch. A male server seated us at a table that was quite dark and directly under a strong air conditioner. I politely asked if we could move to a table by the window. He said yes, but told us to wait while he cleaned the table. My husband and I waited patiently by the other table, looking through the menu. During that time, we saw the male server come out several times to serve other customers, but he never came back to us or acknowledged that we were still waiting. We didn't complain--we simply continued waiting. 15 minutes later, a female server noticed us waiting there and asked if we needed anything. I explained that our original table was too cold and asked whether we could move to the window table. She said yes, cleaned the table, and then waved for us to come over and sit down. At that point, everything seemed fine, and we were looking forward to ordering our lunch. However, shortly afterward, the male server walked directly over to us and began scolding us. He said, "You need to learn to be patient. I told you I would clean the table, and you shouldn't have moved without communicating with me." I calmly explained that the female staff server had cleaned the table and told us to sit there. I asked him, "What did we do wrong?" He replied, "Yes, everyone made a mistake. You just need to learn to be patient." I still don't understand what we did wrong. The female employee who told us to move to the window side table was also works for the restaurant, We simply followed her instructions. So why were we being blamed? From the moment we entered the restaurant until we left--nearly 20 minutes later--the male server never once came over to check on us or even offered us a glass of water. In the end, we decided not to eat there because we did not feel respected or welcomed. We will not be returning. This was an extremely disappointing experience and reflected very poor customer service and restaurant management. I sincerely hope the management will look into what happened and ensure that all customers are treated with courtesy, respect, and fairness.

And their Kung Pao tofu delivered all that I could have hoped of it. A packed full container of finely cubed fried tofu (one hack for anyone that doesn't know how to make tofu taste good: you should probably cut it smaller to give it more surface area to absorb whatever sauce you're cooking it in) as well as some diced carrots, baby corn, and quite a lot of peanuts in a brown sauce with just a bit of spice. I also got some sesame noodles, which is one of the more basic versions of the dish I've had, which is basically just noodles with a dollop of spiced peanut butter to spread around and coat them with. This probably sounds like a dig, but it's pretty satisfying and the noodles themselves had a nice soft texture. It was, as I would expect, a ton of food for the money. Basically the whole interior of this little building was devoted to what looked like a clean and organized kitchen. Fancy? Authentic? No, but American Chinese cuisine is a subculture of its own, and this seems a good example of it. I definitely think it would be worth returning to try their other tofu dishes.

I ended up ordering a few appetizers. The Hot & Sour Soup was the standout... flavorful, comforting, and easily a 5/5 on a cold n wet day. Unfortunately, the rest didn't quite hit the mark. The shrimp rolls were below average... mostly lettuce, the shrimps were dried out, and they took about 10 extra minutes to come out. The crab rangoon was the biggest disappointment; the filling had an unpleasant smell and tasted like heavy, clotted cream cheese and there wasn't even an iota of imitation crab meat to justify that name. My friends ordered egg rolls, which actually looked pretty good (I'd say a solid 4/5), and Singapore noodles, which unfortunately looked underwhelming. Overall, there are a few bright spots, especially the soup, but the food quality and atmosphere were inconsistent. With some updates and more attention to freshness and flavor, this place could really improve.
