Glory! I have found my spot for yummy wonton here in Mount Dora. I was laid low by a beastly sinus infection - 3 days of mouth breathing and sucking on Vitamin C drops - and was desperate for a large wonton soup. Now, I'm fussy about wonton (because it's a go-to order for me). Four wonton in that container and I need to see the manager. Six wonton is okay. But eight or more wonton - that's the sweet spot. I devoured every morsel. Delicious and it lifted my spirits after being sick for days on end. Also, I thought the staff were very nice. They saw me come in wearing a mask and couldn't have been friendlier, which I appreciated. Lunch specials are available here for about $11 and include pork fried rice and a can of soda. I'll be back again soon, for sure. Because sometimes, when you're feeling poorly, a smile and a damn good bit of broth and wonton can do the body (and mind) a world of good. read more

Pretty good chinese food takeout. I've ordered from here a few times in 2023... and never had an issue. Yesterday I had the Chicken w/ Broccoli lunch special with white rice. Ask to be cooked spicy, and it was medium heat. I enjoyed it... and will be back. read more

China Star understands and uses the technique of preparing the proteins (chicken, beef, pork) that make them tender. You've been to Chinese restaurants or take out and some use the "velveting" marinate. But not all do. I had China Star's Chicken Moo Goo Gai Pan and the Chicken was that. Big difference. No frills, like pretty much every Chinese restaurant that always seems to be directly next to a Publix. This one is different, however.... the food is actually great! I can speak highly of their egg foo young, rangoons, and black pepper chicken. All three are 10/10. Get something else at your own peril, or not? Great stuff. read more

Ate here recently, we ordered the General Tso combo and the Sesame chicken combo. The sauce on each was largely the same, just a few sesame seeds sprinkled on top to differentiate the two. The egg roll was disappointing as well, more like a flimsy spring roll with little filling. Pork fried rice needed more pieces of pork in it too. The lady who works the register is quite rude too. just not great, but kind of the norm for Chinese food. read more

So I just moved to the Mount Dora area and I must say I was looking for a really good Chinese place!! And the food was absolutely delicious! The rice was clean and cooked to perfection! You didn't even need sauce to eat the rice. You literally can eat it by itself. The food was fresh hot and tasty! Inside the Restaurant the place actually smells good and smells like fresh food. It was super clean inside unlike a lot of restaurants in the area! And the person who answered the phone was super Pleasant!!! The wings were a lil salty but still super good ! Was craving Chinese food and thought I'd try China Star. Not the friendliest place I've ever been- the KungPao chicken was mediocre and the hot and sour soup was awful - tasted like soap, no flavor at all! In my opinion, the Kung pao chicken at Panda Express, (the fast food place by Target) is much better. Maybe I was there on an off-day but it certainly wasn't worth the $14.00 I paid for lunch. read more

I don't why some of these reviews are bad. They must have plugged in the wrong address for a place across the street or such. I love their food and have always been treated with friendly and courteous staff. Food was always quick and yummy! I usually get some type of fried rice or Mei Fun dish. There is only one other restaurant that has similarly good food but the staff is not as friendly as China Star. Highly recommend. Definitely 5 stars! read more

Honestly , to say that this restaurant has "orange chicken, general tso chicken, or sesame chicken." is a mistake. It's all the same sauce, with the sesame chicken being the only one with added sesame seeds on top. Literally no difference in between them. Super disappointed in the whole meal. read more

After one bite, you're realize that this isn't fit for a dog. But I hate waste, so I put in in a colander and rinsed off all that charred, sickly sweet, overly salted, tasteless brown syrup covering everything. I put it in a colander and rinced off everything I could so my dog wouldn't get sick. He still wouldn't touch it. But when I put it in with regular wet dog food, he ate it. China Star and the nearby China Wok are in competition for worst Chinese restaurant in Florida. So, I'm in the shop as I type this. 2 meals ...meal #1 comes w white rice meal #2 comes w pork fried rice. All we wanted was to flip the rices to the opposite meal. Same rices just different plates...simple enough issue...uhmmmm... No. She charges me for 2 rices that already come with the meals. Then when I question why she is charging me for rices that already come with meals ... Now suddenly there is a language barrier. Two other times prior the kid (probably their son) ran out of rice. Yeah... Ran out of rice in a chinese restaurant. He offered up options for "substitution" ...but then he charged me for an upgrade to my meal. Uhmmm that's no longer a substitution.....that's a scam. I am pretty pissed but I'm more mad at myself because I keep saying I wont ever come back here ... But I do. I promise you this...I definitely will not come back again. I just love China Star and have been going to them since I moved here over 3 years ago. Friendly and very patient, as I have special requests due to my mothers diet and NEVER a bother or problem for them AND if they do have questions..they call me to clarify. The food is always so fresh and delicious. They are the only Chineese restaurant I go to. read more

While antiquing in the area we were scared out of beautiful downtown Mt. Dora by the community art fair -- no free parking for BLOCKS, too many people -- so we found ourselves in a highway strip mall around lunchtime -- ugh We had to choose between Chinese, burgers and yogurt, so we went into China Star, a tiny restaurant with perhaps four in-house tables. Our lunches were okay -- I had the boneless rib lunch special, while my partner had General Tso's chicken, and we split an order of steamed dumplings. The service left a little to be desired, partly due to the language barrier and partly due to a rather brusque attitude on the part of the counter person. The restaurant bills itself as a "NYC-style" Chinese restaurant; I've had NYC Chinese food, and no, this isn't it; but it's...okay. Just don't expect an "experience" eating here other than being handed your plastic containers of food. read more

I've ordered from China Star for the last three years and tonight was the last time. The beef and broccoli was unedible. Whatever the meat was who knows, maybe cat or dog??? But certainly not beef. Tough and no flavor. Even my dog wouldn't eat it. I have to find a new chinese restaurant because I will never order from this place again. The lady who owns it is rude and unfriendly.
