Hmmmm maybe my memories deceive me but china star used to be THE place in the north end for Chinese food. Unfortunately this time it did not live up to the high standards of my memory. The general tsos chicken was not very spicy and the wontons were hard as a rock! Those were always my favorites here so I was very sad almost breaking my teeth biting into them. Rarely do I ever give 5 stars unless service and food is amazing like out of this world and I don't think Chinese fast food has that possibility to reach 5 stars. Now with that being said. They are probably the best Chinese fast food in Fall River ma. Period! They run that place like an army of the best soldiers! You can tell they really take a lot of pride in making food and keeping people satisfied. It is a little out dated in the place and looks much bigger outside than it is inside. Used to always come here for their egg rolls and haven't had in about a year. I decided to try it out and what a waste! The egg rolls were the only thing edible! The chicken inside the fingers were gray and soggy but the worst was their chicken lo mein! Their lo mein tasted of excessive oyster sauce with slimy canned vegetables and was 10.35 in the trash after a bite! I also had to ask for duck sauce and was charged $2 for 5 packets of bland flavor!! Looks like I will stick to Vicki's Chinese in Swansea even with new owners! read more

Totally impressed! Been jumping around trying to find someplace that has good takeout and they definitely packaged up some yummy food and it was still piping hot by the time we got it home!!! The Shrimo Lo Mein was likely the best I'd ever had, their Egg Rolls were good, Crab Rangoons were yummy, Wonton Soup was excellent and their Pork Fried Rice was really good too! First time trying China Star and it certainly wasn't a bad experience. They are open for takeout only, although they do have some booths out to sit at while you wait for your food. Everything was presented quite nicely. The chicken pieces in the orange chicken were the size of chicken tenders. Maybe too big, as they didn't seem to have the flavor that I was looking for. The rest of the food was good, not amazing, but good. Maybe three and a half stars for me. Now the true test will be to see if they are consistent, as this seems to be the biggest problem with Chinese takeout anymore. read more

Use to be decent food there, ordered a D-7 combo where the lady taking order said you want a Dog 7 which I thought was odd, Food was ready after about 10 mins once again Dog 7 started I proceed to get it. Went home and tasted it not good at all, chicken fingers soggy, not cooked, boneless rips also the same and the same for the egg roll. Placed all in air fryer got back a crispy. Tasted chicken fingers were gross zero flavor and freezer burnt and like a dog treat, spareribs is like a dog treat with zero flavor and tough as a bastard and egg roll also zero flavor, tasted the rice and a burnt mess cooked with old motor oil , I give this a 2 on a 10 scale off to the trash can it goes! Small inside. Not very cozy to dine. But take out is awesome. I like to judge my Chinese restaurants by their chicken fingers. Greasy, dry, hard, no chicken. You know the many problems that you can get with chicken fingers. Then the rice.....these boneless spare ribs are to die for. My complete meal was everything I had hoped for and more. Delicious. I made my sister drive like an hour to Fall River because I wanted to try this. My hometown, Honolulu, has a large number of local adaptation of east Asian foods, and I've read about a number of similar dishes on the mainland-including yaka mein in New Orleans and most of the menu at Wo Fat in NYC. As such the chow mein sandwich has been on my to-try list for a few years. Alas I went before I started writing Yelp reviews but I remember going fairly well (maybe six months ago). We ordered one that was just chow mein--it was more what I would call wonton chips but soggier, and one with vegetables and brown gravy--this might've been called chop suey? Both dishes were greasy and almost impossible to eat like a sandwich. It reminded me of the kinds of things I would make in a drunken stupor at 3 am on my dorm, with an ecclectic mix of low-quality frozen supermarket meals and whatever my mom sent me that's on sale at the Japanese market in Honolulu. The sandwich with gravy was like eating mushy brown gravy with bread, and the one without was like moist peppery oil. As a working class mostly immigrant town, this inexpensive fusion dish makes historical sense and, if I were eating this drunk at 3 am, culinary sense as well, but I mean no offense and I'm not in anyway someone with refined or seasoned taste buds. As a surprising piece of asian American culinary history, I think this is something to go out of your way to try if you're in the area, but maybe not something I'd go out of my way to try a second time. read more

Used to be great! Until it was sold to the current owners. The food is not the same. I had an egg roll that I squeezed and a stream of grease came squirting out it was disgusting! We used to go here sometimes 2x a week we ask for well done but they don't seem to know how to do well done. The boneless ribs are 95% fat. I think I expected more from China Star based on the positive reviews. The food wasn't bad, but overall it just wasn't that flavorful. I think the prices are good and in many cases, some of the food just comes down to a personal preference. People that grew up eating some of the dishes in the style that China Star uses would probably love the food (although admittedly, it could use a bit more seasoning or something in some cases). In my opinion, I just happen to like a different style of fried rice, beef teriyaki, and boneless spare ribs for example. China Star's version of fried rice tastes very much like homemade, which is ok, but when I get fried rice out, I want that super hot wok style fried rice! In terms of boneless spare ribs, China Star carries those big, chunky, thick, meaty, fatty ones that are all the same size. I just like them thinner and cut a little differently. That's just what I'm used to. The beef teriyaki tastes like plain beef that was then coated with teriyaki sauce. That's not great. I just like it better when the meat is marinated well and the teriyaki is really cooked and caramelized on there. The lo mein was pretty bad. Just wasn't feeling it and all we could taste was bamboo shoots, which is a strong flavor. It wasn't toasty enough and there was too much sauce. Just not what I like in lo mein. The crab rangoons are pretty good. I like that style of stuffed triangles. They're easy to eat and have a good amount of filling. The Fall River Style chow mein (the brown sauce) was decent. The chicken pieces in it were too large though. It's better when the pieces are cut smaller to go along with the size of the noodles better. Also a little too much celery, which were also cut pretty large. The General Gau's Chicken was ok. The chicken itself was pretty good in that it's what one might expect. The sauce wasn't the best though. It could definitely use some more spice. Tastes more like sesame chicken without the sesame. Overall, it's not bad Chinese food, but it's a little on the bland side and some of the dishes may not be everyone's preferred style. Of course there are plenty of people that like it just fine too! We've been patrons at China Star for years, their fried rice was amazing but now not so much. I'm not sure if the business is under new ownership but the food is not the same. The crab rangoons have a sweet almost rancid taste, fried rice was very greasy, beef lo mein was vey mushy, the fortune cookies had no fortunes and even the house duck sauce wasn't good. I'm sorry to say but we're now looking for another Chinese food place to order from. read more

This is what I call fast food American Chinese food. China Star isn't what real Chinese food is but it will satisfy your cravings for American Chinese food. We decided to try China Star because years ago we heard about a Chow Mein Sandwich and we had to come see what this was all about. You will not find anything like it in other parts of the US, especially California. When we walked in, we saw that a poster on their wall showed their Chow Mein Sandwich was featured in the Food Network Magazine so we thought, "Perfect! We're in the right spot!" To our surprise, the sandwich was good. We were worried especially since the owner told me not basically not to order it. The sandwich has fried won ton strips, lots of sauce and veggies stuffed in a hamburger bun. It's like a sloppy joe. I spoke Chinese to him and ordered the Kung Pao Chicken lunch plate, Hot & Sour Soup and a Chicken Chow Mein Sandwich. He did a double take and said I didn't really want that sandwich and I told him indeed I did want it as I came all this way to give it a try. He tried to talk me out of it a little by showing me that the noodles weren't really noodles that I know of but were fried won ton strips. If you really know your Asian noodles, you would know these aren't really noodles. It was quite a funny interaction. The food came out and my husband took the first bite and I snapped a pic. We had to show our friends back home what an outrageous sandwich this was because no one would believe us otherwise. The Hot & Sour Soup was tasty and piping hot. It had the right brown color and consistency that gives Hot & Soup Soup its distinctive color. The Kung Pao Chicken was also very good. It wasn't too oily and it had big chunks of bell peppers and onions. I am giving China Star a 5 star review because the food was pretty good, the service was friendly from the man owner and the woman that worked there gave us the service I've grown to expect at all Chinese restaurants. She was nicely rude and to the point and gave you a weak fake smile. The restrooms were clean as was the place in general. The prices were very low and the portions were big. So China Star, thank you for making my visit to Fall Rivers worth it. We wanted to find an authentic American Chinese restaurant that served the Chow Mein Sandwich and we found it! Fall Rivers is where it originated so I'm glad China Star served one that was edible. They also have parking so you can run in for a quick bite. read more

Oh man... This place is soooo good. I have always been a fan. I'm all about the delicious Fall River style chow mein. Back in Fall River, we actually invented the chow mein sandwich, which is pretty much a bun, noodles some chicken and a ton of crunchy noodles. Sounds weird to you I'm sure... but It's so good! If your ever headed to Cape Cod or something, def stop and give one a try. Tonight I called in for an order of crab rangoon and a large chicken chow mein. As always, it was ready when I arrived. The chow mein had a lot of chicken and my crab rangoon was so yummy and mouth watering. If your eating alone and don't want left overs, def opt for the smaller sizes. The larges come in huge portions. I'm kind of a fatty and love left overs so I over order... haha. The total for my entire meal was eleven bucks. Which is pretty good for 2+ meals. Don't be afraid of the area, China Star is in an old strip mall in a dodgy party of the city. Actually most of Fall River has seen better days... Regardless this place is awesome and super cheap! This is officially my favorite dive in Fall River! Its great to have an authentic yet, great greasy spoon restaurant. The best Singapore Rice noodles on the planet! I really would stay away from luncheon specials, but the meat based dinner specials are generous and hearty and plenty to share. Love it, definately a fave. Doesn't look like much and has a strong local flavor. Word to the wise, do not ever order Chow Mein... It some disgusting concoction of gravy and fried noodles, know fondly as Fall River Chow Mein. Went in on Christmas Day night, just like everyone else... never ordered nor eaten their food before. It was a suggestion from my wife who grew up eating their food. I'm partial to others but I have to say this place has amazing food! Placed my order, went in to pick it up all within 15 minutes and when I got home everything was piping hot! Very fresh tasting and the inside of the restaurant was very clean. Only thing I can complain about was the chow mein, I like to add my own noodles as I like them crunchy. I don't get tired of this place. New favorite: House Special Chow Fun. The noodles are always cooked perfect. These noodles, in my opinion, are a hit and miss at Chinese restaurants. I was most impressed last Monday. Middle of the snow storm the kitchen was going full force. I asked if they are getting many customers and the owner replied "we are getting a few. But we can't close because we cook everything fresh and if we don't prepare the pork today we won't have enough for the rest of the week. They cook everything fresh in house. If you're looking for your typical yummy, greasy, Fall River Chinese food, this is the place to go. I ordered the cashew chicken and my husband ordered the General Tso's chicken. We ordered an appetizer of spring rolls and fried dumplings as well. The Cashew chicken and dumplings were all right but the General Tso's chicken, spring rolls, and the pork fried rice which came with our meals were amazing! Since we came for lunch the total cost was $20! Hard to believe since our plates were loaded! We ate at the restaurant which was okay considering it is a Chinese food place in Fall River.
