I would give a ZERO star review if I could. Chinese Express is the nearest Chinese restaurant to my office. I should go there pretty frequently when I want Chinese food for lunch. But the restaurant is consistently dirty, messy, unprofessional and fails to provide customer service at an acceptable level. The only reason why I have continued to order food here is because it is less than 3 minutes from my office. Today, I called and ordered combination fried rice for pick up. The woman told me 10 minutes. I waited 15 just to be sure. When I got there, she told me it would take 5 minutes to cook. I asked why it was not cooked and ready already. She walked away from me without saying anything. Plus, when I put my arm on the front counter, old food, crumbs and other dirt stuck to my arm. She did not care that I had called ahead to order my lunch. In fact, she stopped talking to me at all (as in, she did not say anything to me at all) after she realized that I was unhappy. So, I will never go back to Chinese Express again. I recommend that you NEVER go to Chinese Express for anything - even a bottle of water! read more

There were many free parking spaces on the front. The door required a strong pull to open (originally I thought it was closed until I followed someone in). It did offer a few indoor seatings, but I ordered three lunch combinations to go. Given the location and prices, it was great for our quick lunch. The shrimp chow mein came with lots of ingredients. I walked by and saw that they had duck soup. And with homemade noodles. I love duck. And homemade noodles always get my attention. A winning combination, I thought - even in the heat of the summer. I ended up liking this dive of a place in DC's Chinatown (which everyone knows has not seen its golden days in a long time ever since the Chinese northward exodus toward Maryland's Rockville happened). Somehow this place stayed behind and became famous and infamous for it. Considering that the exodus has happened, I was somewhat surprised that many of the staff here in this restaurant does not seem to know English in this gentrifying neighborhood. No problem though. Now, this is old authentic Chinese - and by this I mean Cantonese since most of the new Chinese places opening up are of the Sichuan variety it seems and the Cantonese restaurants seem to be a dying breed, considering that it is lately thought of a cuisine that is more bland simply because Sichaun is spicy (which I actually do not prefer). So I had the duck soup with noodles. If it's bland for some (it wasn't for me) since I found the duck to be tasty - although I did wish for more duck in my bowl. But for $10, the portions, and the handmade thick noodles, I really couldn't find reason to complain. The ginger garlic scallion sauce and the garlic vinegar were nice addition to the soup as well, as well as a teeny drop of a hot chili sauce. They weren't necessary but still contributed nicely to the soup. I would not mind ordering this again in the winter. The menu they have is also rather large, and not counting the specials they have written and taped onto the walls. They have congee which is also nice to see too. They also seem known for their soup dumplings, and their steam crab with egg sauce sounds enticing to me as well. Even the lobster, I'm sure, is good here. Why? Well, this dive of a place not only make noodles fresh, but they have the fish tanks for all to see to get these stuff fresh as well. I mean, really, what more can you ask for as far as freshness goes, other than the squawking of some poultry in the back? And yes, I like this place because it was also surprising affordable for the masses as well. Who wants homestyle cooking that can be had at any day? I certainly do. I can't afford to eat $30 plates on a daily basis (I wish, maybe if I had a benefactor). I'll be back to try more for sure. read more

This is a one and done restaurant for us. We order the Crispy Shrimp with Walnuts and it looked disgusting. They forgot to send my white rice with my meal. When I called the girl who answered asked if I wanted them to deliver the rice. Why? So I can wait another 45 minutes to get here and my food would be cold. There is way too much breading on the shrimp, which there was barely any shrimp in the breading. I also ordered the Honey Chicken, which was very dry. I will never order from them again. Great little hole in the wall Chinese food spot. I've had their General Tao's shrimp and thought it was great. Their fried rice has lots of flavor as well. My boyfriend has had their honey shrimp and loves it (he says it's like little shrimp pancakes). Their white rice is well cooked and not too sticky either. Only weird thing is that even though they're closed on Wednesdays, they'll answer the phone only to tell you they're closed (I feel like an automated message of some kind would be better). read more

I just had lemon chicken, shrimp lo mein and steamed dumplings delivered. The food was horrible. Totally inedible! The chicken was so dry it was disgusting. The dumplings were a soft lumpy mess and the lo mein had no flavor. The whole hot mess went into the trash. A complete waste of money. read more

This place used to be good but must have had an ownership change. Shrimp toast in most Chinese Restaurants are 1/2 a piece of bread cut on the diagonal. NOT HERE...they cut 1 piece of white bread into 4 tiny, tiny, pieces to make the shrimp toast (-scrimping on the shrimp mixture as well). It was dripping with grease and not hot when I picked up the order and decided to taste one on the way home. I can't recommend this place. -Never going here again. read more

We arrived at around 3pm on Sunday afternoon and the restaurant was completely empty. Like you could hear a pin drop empty, didn't see any cooks in the back, no sounds coming from the back, no one speaking, not even music was playing in the restaurant. There was a middle aged woman at the front desk and I should've known better when I looked around and seen a deserted restaurant..... But we order a szechuan chicken order & a general tso's order. We didn't even check the bags until we got home and saw these! We've never seen a szechuan chicken entree look like this. There was barely any chicken and the sauce was soooo heavy and gritty! One bite and it tasted like there was a sand bag in my mouth! I couldn't even eat one more bite. It was also very heavily salted. The general tso's chicken was soooo dark! This picture doesn't do its justice but (sorry for the mental picture) but they looked like burnt turds. I tasted his entree as well and it was just gross and was also super gritty! The batter on the chicken was so soaked and wet, it just fell apart once you put your fork in. There was a lot of water on the bottom of the bowl as well. We won't be back here! OK, the Express might clue you in: This isn't the place for 3 hour banquet meals, BUT if you accept that it's a small family restaurant, hidden in a nondescript shopping center in Gaithersburg, it's hard to get better meals for the money anywhere. The owners will adjust (within reason) to your requests (I like my spicy foods on the hotter side and they always come through) - portions are plentiful and the Hunan and Sichuan rival places with price tags with two more places before the decimal point. The meat was okay but the outer shell shouldnt be so hard and crumbly. If you really want some chinese food you can go here but it isnt really recommended as a "go to". read more

The owners are in the process of changing the name from Chinese Express to Wok Express. Most things seem to be the same. The kitchen seems to be the same. Our purchase today was Kung Pao Beef, Egg Roll, Hot and Sour Soup, and all were good. We asked for Crispy Chicken, and we were told that it was not on the menu. Chinese Grand Ma (the order taker) said "No crispy on Menu!" Then after a pause she said, "We make for you anyway." On the bad side Grand Ma forgot to give us our rice. No big deal as we make our own Jasmine rice, and it is much better than the "generic" restaurant rice. We will report on the name change (and etc. changes) after we know more. Ordered crab rangoons and general's chicken with steamed rice, super basic. Rice is a little undercooked but nothing I can't fix. Asked for the chicken to have medium spice and I'm ok with it. The real punch to the gut is the crab rangoons. There are literally 2 specs of crab. Incredibly disappointing. Not even enough crab flavor to make me think it might have been there. I broke them open completely to look. That really sucks because I love crab rangoons. I'd definitely steer clear of these and probably won't order from here again. read more

I always go to this restaurant whenever I'm in Gaithersburg because I love the owners here. They are always so nice to me because I'm an old customer and they always include some free food when I order. Order off of the real Chinese menu, if you're sick of take out. The fish we ordered was amazing (pic included) and it was sweet and savory and exactly what I needed. I also had bubble tea which is very good there. No food. No message. I call the restaurant. They are closed. Is now 11:40 and the wife just went out to get fast food because I am too angry to drive. No attempt by the restaurant to say there was a problem with the order. No indication they could not fulfill the order. Today i ordered 3 delivery items online; a beef and brocoli combo, a shrimp chow mein, and an egg drop wonton soup. Upon delivery, the driver asked for an extra tip (after I had already included a $5 tip), and he did not bring the napkins nor the hot sauce that i had asked for in the order. My shrimp chow mein was not chow mein and my egg drop wonton soup was cold. When i called to try to fix the problem, one of the managers tried to convince me that chow mein has no noodles....are these people serious? Not good quality. I ordered from them twice as my favorite Chinese place had just closed. I ordered chicken low menu, egg rolls and sesame chicken. The delivery was very prompt which is why they are getting one star. However, the food was pretty terrible. The egg rolls were tiny with nothing but cabbage in them (none of the other little yummy tidbits you often get with egg rolls). The chicken low mein was very bland and the noodles were squishy and gummy-really gross-and I had to throw most of it out.!!! The sesame chicken was dry though the flavoring wasn't bad (very very garlicky). I love garlic so that wasn't an issue for me but my husband hates it so he wouldn't touch the food. I gave this place two tries because the food was okay. First time they were late with my 100$ order but got it correct. Second time I thought I'd give them a whole hour for my food to be ready which was just a lunch dish 14$. I come and they have no such order taken then said it was already picked up. I stated my name and they said they didn't take a name. They either gave my order to someone else who had came just walk in and didn't bother to make it again for a pick up (whole different order). Some of the better Chinese food in the area plus bubble tea! The bubble tea was nice and made to order (compared to a place like Lily's Bubble Tea which uses a shocking amount of powders). The place smelled incredible. We were next door getting our tire replaced when I decided I need some bubble tea. Not even expecting to pick up a menu, we walked in and were blown away by the aroma. No joke! We took a menu for later but before leaving I asked if they made scallion pancakes, though they weren't on the menu. She said, without hesitation, yes they did. About a week later we ordered from them and it was very good. Only complaints: not the biggest fan of the dumpling filling and the general tso's batter was soggy upon arrival. The chicken and sauce were great. The scallion pancakes and wonton soup were delicioso ---look at me speaking languages! The sesame noodles were ok but I thought they were going to be peanut noodles but spicy. I think you have to order the "cold noodles" for that. Recommended! I work close by and has seen this place a couple times ok my way to work. I figured I'd give it a try today. I ordered the crabmeat wontons and the volcano maki sushi roll. The wontons where fresh crisp and soft, the rolls was very good too. Didn't fall apart and had fresh meat avalado and rice. Service was quick and good was ready extremely fast. Ok so I just ordered delivery from here. It came pretty quickly so that was nice. I ordered crab wontons and sesame chicken. The wontons were pretty good buy it was downhill from there. The fried rice tasted like it had been cooked with old used oil and wss gross. The sesame chicken was way over breaded. Not only that but poorly breaded. The breading wss falling off and watery. The actual chicken pieces were incredibly small and not very appetizing. On top of all odd that the wrap of the egg roll reminded me of cardboard. Would not recommend. read more
