After a long day outside, we decided to drive a bit further to Germantown for a Cantonese dinner. A few of us grew up eating Cantonese food, so we wanted the classics. The servers speak Cantonese, which was a good sign. We ordered food and a couple plates arrived within 5 minutes (!!) which was insanely fast. I think we got all of our dishes within 10 minutes of ordering. I'm not sure how they whipped it up so quickly. CHICKEN & CORN SOUP - 9.95 We got two orders of this since there were six of us, and each person was able to enjoy almost two bowls of the soup. This was more like egg drop soup at an American Chinese restaurant with some bits of corn and chicken. You really can't call this "chicken & corn" soup. There was lots of cornstarch to give a thick texture. Overall, it's not bad but I think most people can make a better chicken & corn soup at home. BARBECUE PLATTER (3 SELECTIONS) - 21.95 +bbq pork +bbq crispy pork +bbq roasted duck The bbq was fine, nothing to write home about. The bbq pork was vibrantly red, but flavor was a bit bland. The bbq crispy pork wasn't very crispy, but it had a good ratio of skin, fat, and meat. The bbq roasted duck was just fatty. SEAFOOD CHOW FUN - 14.95 Instead of the wavy egg noodles, the server recommended the flat rice noodles (hor fun) because she said it was better. There was a good amount of vegetables and seafood. Aesthetically, it looked delicious. It wasn't too oily, which is good, but it was pretty bland and lacked the "wok hay" flavor... Almost like they just lightly sauteed it on a pan. SAUTEED CHINESE BROCCOLI W GARLIC - 13.95 The texture was nice and crunchy, but again, very bland and no "wok hay" flavor. I ate it for health. EGGPLANT WITH GARLIC SAUCE - 11.95 The eggplant was incredibly saucy and flavorful, definitely the best dish we got. It was soft, tender, and creamy which went well with the garlic sauce. Our entire table agreed this was our favorite. KINGDOM PORK CHOP - 15.95 The sauce was a dark red and very thick. We knew without trying that it was going to be too overpowering and sweet. Indeed it was. Out of everything we ordered, this was definitely our least favorite because it was borderline inedible. I had high hopes since someone recommended New Village as one of the best Cantonese restaurants in the area, but it ended up being pretty mediocre. Like another review had mentioned, most dishes felt flat since the flavors lacked the "wok hay" depth we were looking for. 5.11.25 My family took my mother to an early dinner around 5 PM on Mother's Day. We were a party of 8. We did not make reservations as my mother said we would not need it and we did not. I did notice that there were some larger tables that were reserved so I guess we got lucky. We ordered lots of entrées to share including: lobster, pork chop, bok choy, mixed veggie dish (?), moo shi chicken, soy sauce chicken, crispy shredded beef, and crispy squid. I also ordered the crab meat and fish maw soup which has a serving for two, but the portion is generous and can serve five. I also ordered crispy eggplant, but was informed they didn't have it. I thoroughly enjoyed everything although I didn't eat the veggie dish. The fish soup was pungent and tasted very fishy compared to other places I've had it (although it's been years). I had leftovers and added ground black pepper the next day which helped lessen the pungent taste. Although the food was great, service was less than optimal. Our server who may have been the owner, was rude and inattentive. When the soup came out in a big bowl, he only brought one small bowl. The menu said serving for two so there should have been at least two bowls. When I requested bowls, he only brought an additional one out. My sister asked my family how many of them wanted soup and three of them did. So she had to request three additional bowls. My sister said our server said that we ordered a lot of food. She was annoyed as that is our prerogative. As long as we are paying why should he care? You would think that that would be a good thing that the restaurant would want large orders to bring in more revenue. Our server just wasn't hospitable and seemed very rude. Surprisingly he actually thanked us when we left. When I went to pay the tab, the employee who was at the register asked if it was ok to charged 20% tip which was circled on the tab. The food here is decent--no major complaints on taste--but unfortunately the customer service really overshadows it and I agree with the other reviews that state rude, unprofessional service. Every interaction feels uncomfortable. They repeatedly push for tips and insist on cash payment in a way that comes across as aggressive rather than informative. On top of that, the tone when ordering is consistently rude, no matter who answers the phone. It feels like you're inconveniencing them just by placing an order. Their loud tone, rushing you to hurry and place an order, only to arrive at a restaurant that isn't even busy to be excused for that behavior. Honestly, the place doesn't ever really seem busy, and I can see why. I want to support local businesses, but it's hard to enjoy or recommend a spot where customers are made to feel unwelcome or pressured. This place used to be amazing before COVID, serving authentic Cantonese food that was hard to find elsewhere. But my visit last week was a total disappointment and honestly felt like a scam. I get that prices have gone up--every restaurant raised prices after COVID, and I don't mind paying more. But what they're doing now is unacceptable: they've butchered the portions, especially the protein, to the point of being insulting. I ordered the seafood pan-fried noodles, which came with a pathetic amount of seafood: 2 tiny shrimp, 2 little strips of squid, 2 paper-thin slices of scallop (probably just one scallop cut in half), 2 small strips of fish cake, and a few vegetables. For something labeled "seafood," that's a joke. The pipa tofu--which is supposed to be tofu mixed with shrimp--had ZERO shrimp flavor. It was just plain tofu. Calling this "pipa tofu" is false advertising, plain and simple. The only dish that still tasted decent was the soy sauce chicken. Everything else was a shadow of what it used to be. Honestly, throwing in 4-5 real shrimp and a proper portion of scallops wouldn't bankrupt them. But cutting corners this badly will. I drove almost 50 minutes from Howard County for this meal, and it was a complete waste of time and money. If they keep scamming customers like this, they won't stay in business for long. Had lunch here with my husband on a late Sunday afternoon and the place was pretty slow. We were seated and given menus right away. The menu is pretty extensive. We ordered the egg drop soup to share. For entrees, we got the crispy beef and bbq with two meats (we picked roast pork and crispy pork). The crispy beef came with rice, but the bbq platter did not. The menu is not really descriptive. Also our server didn't seem like the patient type. So I recommend going through reviews before coming here if you're not familiar with this type of cuisine. The food is good. It leans towards the salty/greasier side, but I still liked it. I liked the crispy beef the best. It's not doused in sauce which I appreciated. The crispy pork was fattier than I would've liked. However, the portions are BIG! I read reviews before coming to this place and saw the complaints about the service, but it was ok, maybe because I expected it to be horrible. No one came to refill our waters. Also they took our chopsticks before we ordered. I'm assuming they thought we don't know how to use chopsticks. It was also hard to flag down a server because they started eating lunch around the same time we were. We had a great experience at New Village last week. The Cantonese style dishes were delicious. We tried the shrimp with lobster sauce, deep fried pork chops, beef fried rice, eggplant with garlic sauce, seafood pan fried noodles, and congee. Every dish we tried was delicious. The service was quick and friendly even though they spoke very little English. We were seated right away and didn't have to wait. The ambiance is casual, but they have white table cloths with plenty of seating for large parties. I definitely would recommend eating here again. The crispy pork belly was a little too salty for me, but overall good! The skin was crispy and the meat was juicy. The fish fillet was decent, but way too greasy for me. Stopped on my way home from the airport after a weekend out of town, placed my order, and was invited to take a seat while I waited for my order to be prepared. It didn't take long and I was on my way home with my takeout. Imagine my surprise when I got home to find that my egg rolls had been left out of the bag. After a day of traveling, I didn't want to go back for them, I called the restaurant and they said I could come get them the following day. So I enjoyed my sweet and sour chicken for dinner. My family and I just recently ordered about $200 worth of food for carryout for a party and have been coming here for at least 10 years but upon pickup, we became very concerned about the cleanliness. I saw waitresses cleaning vegetables with their bare hands on an unlined dinner table in the dining room which doesn't look very sanitary. And the storage area in the far left side of the restaurant has become disgusting -dirty & unorganized. Certainly they can hide it with some office partitions can't they? This is really sad. I feel like the owner has given up and doesn't care anymore. Certainly their children can help out can't they? This restaurant needs a deep clean & spiffing up. First off, I never leave bad reviews. This is the first bad review I am leaving based off of my personal experience. I came here with my mom and sister and the service here was HORRIBLE. For a party of 3, we only ordered 3 items but once it was time to pay, the workers demanded that we tipped them an extra $20. They would not leave until we gave them a $20 tip. Mind you that we had a small party of 3 and we did not order that much food. We had originally left a 15% tip but that was not enough for the workers so they harassed us to tip an extra $20. We always tip properly, but this management forced us to tip more than what they serviced us. We didn't finish all the food either so we asked for carry out boxes which WE (my sister and I) HAD TO BOX OURSELVES. What is the point of tipping extra on top of what we tipped for the bare minimum service? We will NEVER EVER be coming back here. What a terrible way to run a business. DO NOT EAT HERE. Very unprofessional restaurant. On several occasions, they have pressured customers to pay with cash and if you politely decline to say you prefer credit card, they respond with a poor attitude (smacking their lips, rolling their eyes, aggressive body language - snatching your card). Also unsanitary practices, some staff wear gloves and touch everything (money, clean off dirty tables), then handle your food with those same dirty gloves. If you order over the phone, they are very rude, rushing you, with a harsh tone saying things like, "what else?!", as if you're inconveniencing them. I usually go to east pearl, but found New Village! It is much closer to my city. Seems clean, spacious, and has variety of dishes for both meat eaters and vegetarians. They do offer a gluten free sauce, otherwise the regular brown saute sauce is great. The menu is plenty, great for families. The service was great! Usually most chinese dimsum or restaurant i go to, they barely offer to pack your food for you but the lady serving me did that! If you ever worked in a restaurant before, you would understand how great that feels to have someone help you. If you're looking for large portions and delicious Cantonese- styled Chinese food in the Germantown area, this is the place to go. Unlike some Chinese restaurants with really good food but limited parking, there is plenty of available parking and plenty of room for your chair and table so you're not literally crammed back to back with strangers. This place was mostly empty on a Saturday at noon and in the late evening which was sad because the service and food we had were excellent. I came with extended family so there were plenty of dishes to be ordered which all took place in a mix of Mandarin and Cantonese. The staff switched to English easily when addressing the non Chinese speaking members of our party. They serve complimentary Lipton tea and ice water at the tables. They were happy to point out recommendations and I believe a few things that are not listed on the printed menu. Upon ordering, food came out very quickly and hot as well. While I think of one restaurant in mind that has a slightly better flavor with the dishes, for the same price, you get much larger potions at this restaurant (and parking and sitting space). First that came out was the pipa duck. Not sure I saw it on the menu but it was something our server had recommended. The skin of the duck was extremely crispy and there was a good amount of meat on the cuts of duck. While there was fat, it was very easy to remove (I agree fat gives flavor but I'm not a fan of consuming straight up animal fat). It was quickly followed by the seafood chow mein (D13) and beef chow foon (D18). The chow mein noodles were nice and crispy expect where the seafood and sauce came in contact with, which is great because you could get both crispy and softened noodles! There was plenty of seafood with veggies so everyone in our large party could get whatever they wanted. The beef chow foon had approval from the elders who said if the beef chow foon is good, the chef is good. The marinated cuttlefish is served chilled (I think) on a bed of marinated radish and carrots. All I remember is that it tasted good and I wanted more, but it was so popular I didn't get a chance for seconds with it. The sautéed snow pea leaves with garlic (V18) was delicious but a bit oily. That didn't stop me from going back for more between bites of the pipa duck that I also kept getting more servings of. Despite members of the party not liking lamb, the bean skin and lamb in hot pot (CP10) was also ordered. The lamb meat is very tender and just falls off the bone. I actually didn't realize it was lamb until someone told me and the lamb-haters actually ate pieces because the meat wasn't gamey. I did notice this rang up $3 more than what was listed on the menu. The grouper fillet with XO sauce (S12) came loaded with snow peas, carrots, and celery. I was getting full at this point so I didn't eat this dish because I really wanted to try the beef dish that was coming. The last dish was snap peas with filet mignon. Little cubes of tender beef served with crisp snap peas, bell peppers, and onions. I think this isn't on the regular menu but we all really enjoyed this dish. I will definitely be coming back or ordering takeout from this place. It's good food and I hope they stay open! read more

I've been here a few times and each time has been a solid, authentic Chinese food experience at a reasonable pricing. They have the best congee in the area with a large portion size, good flavoring, and fair pricing ($8-$9); I've tried the fish congee and the preserved duck egg + pork and both were excellent. The other dishes that were solid included the peking duck, shrimp & walnut with broccoli, and shrimp in lobster sauce, although the shrimp in lobster sauce was a bit unusual that it came with a ton of mushrooms. The only thing is that there's a bit of a communication barrier and the service can be a bit rough depending on your server. Even though I'm partially fluent in mandarin Chinese, it's still difficult to communicate our order and they occasionally get the type of congee we want wrong. read more

The beef chow foon was amazing! It was a smokey kinda of steak flavor mixed in with rice noodles. One of the best dishes I've ever had as takeout. The lo mein noodles were no joke. I think they slammed a pound of noodles in the box with almost no vegetables. Might be a good idea to request extra vegetables. Very tasty noodles. Pro Tip: My family also got the tofu with bok choy. Horrible customer service, both the owner and manager are one of the rudest I've ever seen. The scallop in seafood chow mein tasted like it went bad. After one bite, I had to split it out and told the manager and his first words out of his mouth, started yelling. Then told me I still have to pay for that dish even through it clearly looked like the food was barely touched because "you still ate it!." I paid after asking them to take it back and cancelled rest of the order. Never going back. They should probably be reported for food safety violations.
