Not sure why the low scores, we enjoyed the food - lobsters (in season), string beans, and pork chops. The severs were friendly (they weren't so busy at 2pm on a Sunday afternoon), and tired to entertain my in-laws. Running a business in this economy isn't easy...I'm giving it 5 stars.

5.11.25 My family took my mother to an early dinner around 5 PM on Mother's Day. We were a party of 8. We did not make reservations as my mother said we would not need it and we did not. I did notice that there were some larger tables that were reserved so I guess we got lucky. We ordered lots of entrées to share including: lobster, pork chop, bok choy, mixed veggie dish (?), moo shi chicken, soy sauce chicken, crispy shredded beef, and crispy squid. I also ordered the crab meat and fish maw soup which has a serving for two, but the portion is generous and can serve five. I also ordered crispy eggplant, but was informed they didn't have it. I thoroughly enjoyed everything although I didn't eat the veggie dish. The fish soup was pungent and tasted very fishy compared to other places I've had it (although it's been years). I had leftovers and added ground black pepper the next day which helped lessen the pungent taste. Although the food was great, service was less than optimal. Our server who may have been the owner, was rude and inattentive. When the soup came out in a big bowl, he only brought one small bowl. The menu said serving for two so there should have been at least two bowls. When I requested bowls, he only brought an additional one out. My sister asked my family how many of them wanted soup and three of them did. So she had to request three additional bowls. My sister said our server said that we ordered a lot of food. She was annoyed as that is our prerogative. As long as we are paying why should he care? You would think that that would be a good thing that the restaurant would want large orders to bring in more revenue. Our server just wasn't hospitable and seemed very rude. Surprisingly he actually thanked us when we left. When I went to pay the tab, the employee who was at the register asked if it was ok to charged 20% tip which was circled on the tab. The service sucked so I didn't think that they deserve 20% but I gave it to them anyways. My sister said she is less inclined to return due to the service.

Stay away from here. The woman who took my order at the cash register on 10/19 had a attitude problem. The prices are astronomical I paid OVER $18 for Hunan Shrimp. I purchased 2 my total was $38.11. I considered a 3rd purchase because I found out I was having another guest. The woman says "Why you want more order? It take long time, 30-40 minutes we so busy"! I got home and the THE FOOD WAS SO NASTY... the Hunan sauce tasted like vinegar & cardboard. The gave me one box of rice for two orders of Hunan. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE.

Pipa Tofu, but it's just plain mashed tofu--no shrimp at all. crabmeat on gravy is replaced with egg whites. Total bait and switch.

This place used to be amazing before COVID, serving authentic Cantonese food that was hard to find elsewhere. But my visit last week was a total disappointment and honestly felt like a scam. I get that prices have gone up--every restaurant raised prices after COVID, and I don't mind paying more. But what they're doing now is unacceptable: they've butchered the portions, especially the protein, to the point of being insulting. I ordered the seafood pan-fried noodles, which came with a pathetic amount of seafood: 2 tiny shrimp, 2 little strips of squid, 2 paper-thin slices of scallop (probably just one scallop cut in half), 2 small strips of fish cake, and a few vegetables. For something labeled "seafood," that's a joke. The pipa tofu--which is supposed to be tofu mixed with shrimp--had ZERO shrimp flavor. It was just plain tofu. Calling this "pipa tofu" is false advertising, plain and simple. The only dish that still tasted decent was the soy sauce chicken. Everything else was a shadow of what it used to be. Honestly, throwing in 4-5 real shrimp and a proper portion of scallops wouldn't bankrupt them. But cutting corners this badly will. I drove almost 50 minutes from Howard County for this meal, and it was a complete waste of time and money. If they keep scamming customers like this, they won't stay in business for long. Sorry for being harsh but I have to be honest!

BBQ platter 2 selections (crispy and roast pork)

Had lunch here with my husband on a late Sunday afternoon and the place was pretty slow. We were seated and given menus right away. The menu is pretty extensive. We ordered the egg drop soup to share. For entrees, we got the crispy beef and bbq with two meats (we picked roast pork and crispy pork). The crispy beef came with rice, but the bbq platter did not. The menu is not really descriptive. Also our server didn't seem like the patient type. So I recommend going through reviews before coming here if you're not familiar with this type of cuisine. The food is good. It leans towards the salty/greasier side, but I still liked it. I liked the crispy beef the best. It's not doused in sauce which I appreciated. The crispy pork was fattier than I would've liked. However, the portions are BIG! I read reviews before coming to this place and saw the complaints about the service, but it was ok, maybe because I expected it to be horrible. No one came to refill our waters. Also they took our chopsticks before we ordered. I'm assuming they thought we don't know how to use chopsticks. It was also hard to flag down a server because they started eating lunch around the same time we were. The table of 4 next to us were told about the 18%-20% tip suggestion but we weren't, so we tipped based on the service we got.

We had a great experience at New Village last week. The Cantonese style dishes were delicious. We tried the shrimp with lobster sauce, deep fried pork chops, beef fried rice, eggplant with garlic sauce, seafood pan fried noodles, and congee. Every dish we tried was delicious. The service was quick and friendly even though they spoke very little English. We were seated right away and didn't have to wait. The ambiance is casual, but they have white table cloths with plenty of seating for large parties. I definitely would recommend eating here again. I can't wait to try other dishes including the Peking duck.

My dad went inside the restaurant to make a reservation for later that day. However, when he spoke to the hostess, she disrespectfully, dismissively, and angrily yelled "THERE ARE NO MORE TABLES" (in chinese). Multiple people turned around and as a result of this incident, my family decided to never return and to inform our friends of this incident. When there are other Chinese restaurants in the area with better food and service, it's safe to say that we won't be missing New Village.

    Tasteless rice

I Order the Lo mein and shrimp fried rice. Unfortunately, I am not impressed. The food has no taste, furthermore the Lo mein is dry and tasteless!

Stopped on my way home from the airport after a weekend out of town, placed my order, and was invited to take a seat while I waited for my order to be prepared. It didn't take long and I was on my way home with my takeout. Imagine my surprise when I got home to find that my egg rolls had been left out of the bag. After a day of traveling, I didn't want to go back for them, I called the restaurant and they said I could come get them the following day. So I enjoyed my sweet and sour chicken for dinner. After work the following day, I stopped for the egg rolls. Not only were they apologetic for forgetting them The day before, they gave me a complimentary large egg drop soup along with the egg rolls, which was definitely more than I expected, great customer service and I look forward to returning the next time I'm looking for Chinese takeout.

First off, I never leave bad reviews. This is the first bad review I am leaving based off of my personal experience. I came here with my mom and sister and the service here was HORRIBLE. For a party of 3, we only ordered 3 items but once it was time to pay, the workers demanded that we tipped them an extra $20. They would not leave until we gave them a $20 tip. Mind you that we had a small party of 3 and we did not order that much food. We had originally left a 15% tip but that was not enough for the workers so they harassed us to tip an extra $20. We always tip properly, but this management forced us to tip more than what they serviced us. We didn't finish all the food either so we asked for carry out boxes which WE (my sister and I) HAD TO BOX OURSELVES. What is the point of tipping extra on top of what we tipped for the bare minimum service? We will NEVER EVER be coming back here. What a terrible way to run a business. DO NOT EAT HERE. YOU WILL GET HARASSED TO LEAVE AT LEAST 20% TIP OR MORE.

Overall, very good and quite close to Montgomery Village, MD. It's a smaller place than the the really big Chinese establishments I've been to lately that have private rooms and large dining areas. The dining area here is far more modest, but do have 2-3 round tables for larger families. The ambience is more modern, but feels inviting and is extremely clean. As for the food, it can certainly roll with the big places. I had their hot and sour soup, dandan noodles, and also their wontons in chili oil. The first two were excellent, while the chili oil wasn't as flavorful as I was hoping for the wontons. The wontons, however, were excellent. Maybe it was an off-night for the chili oil. I'll need to revisit and try again. I decided to get the Mapo Tofu as a takeout so I could enjoy it the next day. The next day, I had it for lunch with rice, and the tofu was terrific. It was just spicy enough to satisfy me without me having to add anything. And, even after microwaving it, it stilled tasted great. I didn't feel that the taste or spices got diluted from storing in the refrigerator until the next day. Overall, if you're in the area of Gaithersburg/Montgomery Village, this restaurant is close by and makes terrific Szechuan-style cuisine.

It was the last one on my plate and I was looking forward to taking it to-go. The incredibly kind server witnessed the ordeal and came right back with a whole new plate!!! I was so incredibly touched by the kind gesture. Our table is always full of food and never any empty plates or cups because of their attentive service. We arrived right when they opened around 11 AM on a weekend and were seated immediately since it wasn't too busy yet. One thing to note is that the entire party needs to be present before being seated, which they enforce, but it helps keep things moving smoothly once you're inside. The service felt traditional and efficient, with attentive push carts circulating constantly, making it easy to see what's fresh and grab dishes as they come by. The staff were also accommodating with a baby seat, which made the visit comfortable for families. The steamed cart is always my favorite, and Far East does it well. Standouts for me were the shrimp rice crepe (silky and delicate), shrimp dumplings (har gow) with plump, juicy filling, and the steamed ribs, which were tender and flavorful. The chicken feet and tripe were also well prepared -- classic dim sum staples done right. I also loved the sticky rice, which was fragrant and satisfying, along with two must-order bakery items: the pineapple buns and egg tarts. Both were fresh and comforting, with the egg tarts having that perfect balance of flaky crust and smooth custard. Overall, Far East delivers a solid, traditional dim sum experience -- lively carts, reliable favorites, and a welcoming environment for groups and families. Great spot to gather, share dishes, and enjoy a relaxed weekend dim sum meal. Definitely glad to have seating back again.

Far East is a longtime staple in the DMV food scene, having been in operation since 1974. I was a few times a year patron leading up to 2019, and the last time I was there was in 2023. During my 2023 visit, the place was showing it's age with dingy matted carpeting and cramped dining room. Against my better judgement, I made the trek into Rockville to meet up with some folks for Sunday dim sum. IMHO, while it's true at one point, VA dim sum was inferior to it's MD siblings across the river, I'd say there are plenty of comparable if not BETTER places in VA. Our group was large (15), so we had to dine at two tables, as the largest table could only accomodate12. And note, for dim sum, Far East does not seat incomplete parties, so everyone arrive early. Also note, if you do choose to dine here, the parking lot is fairly small - but there is additional parking towards the back past the dumpsters. My recollection from 2023, was the selection of dishes was quite limited, and the 3-4 ladies who were pushing the steam carts, were peddling the same items over and over. That experience has not changed in 3 yrs. Upon sitting, our hungry group ordered dishes of shrimp dumplings (har gow), shumai, tofu rolls, rice rolls w/shrimp and beef, etc. Everything was fine; but nothing really stood out. The items were lukewarm, and cooled within a few minutes of being passed around the Lazy Susan. To me anyway, I found many of the dishes to be underseasoned...and when does a person characterize Chinese food as not being SALTY enough? The table chili oil was also quite bland. There was a good mix of fried chilis combined with oil, but there was just a hint of spice/heat with the predominant flavor being a heavy greasiness. Perhaps the worst part of the experience was the service. Even accepting that Chinese restaurants are notorious for "providing" legendary bad service, Far East exceeded that reputation. I understand that it was Sunday and the place was busy, but it took over 10 minutes for water and tea to arrive. And a few times, I literally had to get up from the table to flag down servers to refill empty water glasses and tea pots. Piles of dirty dishes kept piling up to the point where a few of us, took them to the bussers and food runners ourselves to make space for new dishes at the table. However, the worst incident was at the end when the servers and what I assume was the manager, rushed us to pay the bill since they needed the table, one of the staff was hurriedly cleaning the table, and spilled an entire glass of ice water on my friend's dress! He didn't even apologize, and when she went to complain to the manager, the only thing he said was, "it's only water, it will wash out." Wow! even by Chinese restaurant standards, that's bad!!! When the bill arrived, the total came out to roughly $35/person with tax and tip (gratuity is already included for larger parties, so be sure to double-check the bill). The meal was definitely NOT worth the $35, and for that amount, I could've had a much better and filling meal at Peter Chang Herndon - https://www.yelp.com/biz/peter-chang-herndon?osq=Peter+Chang This will undoubtedly be the last time I travel to Montgomery County for dim sum...and especially to Far East Restaurant.
