Push cart style dim sum. Gets busy on weekends and you need full party before they'll seat you. Prices are a little high but good selection available. Interior is also nicely designed

Four Happiness (sampler). Wings, Shrimp Toast, Chinese BBQ Ribs, & Spring Roll). So good.

Not bad for dim sum! To be honest pretty comparable to other dim sum spots in Virginia, but none of the dishes in particular stood out. I would come here again!

We had a lot of fun at dim sum brunch at Far East Restaurant. The service was very fast. The servers with the carts come around with various offerings, and you basically just say yes or no to each thing they try to put on the table. Most of the food was excellent. We especially enjoyed some steamed shrimp dumplings, noodle dishes and fried rice. I loved the stuffed eggplant. The restaurant got very busy around noon, but the fast and attentive service stayed consistent. We felt like we got a good price for a vast amount of dishes. We were happy with the experience.

*Dinner experience, need to try Dim Sum still.* Ahh holy saltiness. We started with the twice cooked pork (pork chung king) and salt and pepper squid and I can't say I'd recommend someone with high bp to come here for dinner. The flavors were all in the right direction but still very much on the Chinese-American end of the flavors palette. Sadly it was all so very salty and the single, small cup of rice given per dish was insufficient to help. We then ordered a shrimp lo mein which saved the day - not stellar but hit being the staple you expect. The service was fine and not too busy for a late night. We'll have to try their dim sum and I hope it's much better.

Peking duck was dry. Everything else was quite sweet. Nothing was extraordinary flavor wise and prices were a bit high. Our waiter was also not that helpful in helping us order and couldn't really explain the food. This place will cater well for large groups as this place is spacious. But food wise I think there's better Chinese places, especially in this area.

It's been a while since I last came here, and since then they've renovated -- the restaurant now has a beautiful, more modern look with an old-world Chinese decor that feels elegant and inviting. The food was very good. We ordered the shredded pork pan-fried noodles, the Kingdom pork chop -- which was crispy yet tender with a delicious sweet, savory, and tangy sauce -- and a fish dish with stir fried vegetables. The service was very kind and attentive, which made the experience even better. This place is a bit more expensive than other Chinese restaurants in the area, but perhaps that's due to the updated ambiance and decor. Overall, we enjoyed dining here.

Far East is amazing! The service was great and the food was so authentic and delicious. The ambiance was perfect too. I'm visiting from the Los Angeles San Gabriel Valley area and I was curious to compare Far East and I was definitely not disappointed. We got the beef chow fun, stir fried eggplant and General Tso's Chicken. The chow fun tasted perfect. The chicken was perfectly crisp and the sauce was so delicious. The garlic sauce for the eggplant was perfect as well. I'll definitely be back!

We have been loyal customers for at least 30+ years (dine in & carry out). We frequented with take-out during COVID, continued to support when restaurant was under renovation more recently and then returned to dine-in in 2024. We noticed a change to staff demeanor at that point, dismissed as a possible 1-time waiter issue. Food waa still amazing despite rising costs, which is everywhere. We continued our take out traditions and the other night was invited to dine there with our friend. Again, food is amazing! Restaurant looks lovely, acoustics on busy night is terribly noisy. Our friend mentioned making a reservation same day, but told us the man on phone abruptly said, "don't be late". Really?? Our table was ready on time, restaurant was about 1/2 capacity, plenty of parking available and no one came in to be seated after us. No reason to have been rude on the phone with that comment & manner of speaking. I'm not sure what is going on there with personnel! In "the old days", customer service was never an issue; however, we were treated like we had done something wrong to the waiter the moment he first came over. He was abrupt, lacking good manners (never apologized for my meal served 15 minutes after everyone else's, nor when we were served, no one mentioned "yours woll be out in a minute", never checked on if we needed anything after 2 out of 3 meals served, and to top it all off, standing over my friend, grabbing the receipt the second he put the pen down & my friend was NOT done as he tips in cash, it was NOTICEABLY rude & uncomfortable for the waiter to hover staring & checking the receipt he snatched before we were done). He lacked healthy table manners (he moved ALL our tea cups & glasses with his fingers touching ALL the rims and other table objects making space. I no longer felt comfortable drinking either my water or tea at that point, that's how sickness can easily spread from other tables, himself or wherever. I'm sure he doesn't wash his hands after every table, if he did it to us, that's how he works & what if 1 of us was sick?) Nor did he exhibit ANY appropriate waiter skills, some of the things I previously mentioned, like lacking courtesy with checking, "how's your dinner", or "can I get you anything else" or a simple "please, thank you" apology with being served 15 minutes after everyone else & having COLD rice, not even a smile, and making us feel like we impositioned him by sitting at his station. Again food is good, but I think we will stick to take out unless someone recommends a specific GOOD waiter/waitress there, but I almost doubt it, because we noticed only ONE of the several wait staff having a personality & being genuinely helpful to their guests. We are guests in "your house", we should feel welcomed. I would have given better rating but service flaws consistently over historical time dings any higher rating. This recent visit, visit from 2024 and even a prior visit for 1 of my moms birthday dinners where we were treated terribly will put me on a search for new in-dining Chinese.

I've been going to this place for about 40 years. Love that the new owners started doing dim sum. This is my favorite place on the whole east coast to get Peking duck! I grew up in MD then moved away, but try to come back here every time we visit. Only thing negative is the people that work the front (hostess/managers) have a serious attitude problem. If I didn't have such history here, I would probably not come back if I had just been once or twice. They need to treat their customers better. I think they feel that they are so busy on weekends, that they act however they want. My favorite dishes are the Peking duck #1, general Tso, salt & pepper squid, mapo pork& tofu, seafood pan fried noodles.

Really happy they renovated the interior of the restaurant when they reopened awhile back, It needed the refresh. We've been coming here since I was a kid and the restaurant was located in the strip shopping plaza next door. We've had many private party functions upstairs when Stanley was the manager. These days we dine here mainly for their dim sum. It opens at 11 AM on Saturdays and 10:30 AM on Sundays. Get there early to avoid the wait. It's not as large as China Garden and New Fortune so you will have to wait if you come 15 minutes after opening. Can't go wrong with any of the dim sum offerings.

Far East has been on my bucket list for years. I think it's one of two dim sum places in Maryland that does cart service. It's in Rockville Maryland, so it's a drive. I wouldn't go to Rockville just to eat here. But it's a good place to stop if you're in the area. Also make sure you go with more than one other person because their portions are quite large and a little bit on the pricier side so you want to be able to try more things. We were so full bc we over ordered! I really liked the crystal shrimp and the tofu I love chicken feet, but didn't love their version here. We went on a random Friday so we were able to get in without waiting, but I have heard that on the weekends. It can take hours for you to get seated. They have other items, not just dim sum. I would definitely go back and there's a lot of other things to do in Rockville so you can make this part of a whole day trip out of the city or if you are local, you should eat here. The restaurant is really spacious with beautiful statues outside and it's actually quite bright on the inside. This is a mandarin establishment so I think their sauces are a little bit different than Cantonese and what I'm used to getting like the ginger soy sauce - no ginger here, but again I'm Korean. What do I know?

Ask the Community - Far East Restaurant

Can customer order dimsum in Sunday dine-in diner time?

Dim sum is only available early lunch hours. It's best to arrive early for dim sum as the line gets long and popular items can sell out before the end of dim sum. Be prepared to pay with cash as they say the machines go down frequently.

What time does dim sum end on the weekends is it all day or at 3?

It ends at 3 pm. Dim sum is served Mon to Sat: 11 am to 3 pm and Sunday: 10:30 am to 3 pm

    Do they use peanut oil?

Most Chinese restaurants use soybean or vegetable oil. If peanut or nut allergy is a concern, it is best to check with the restaurant before ordering. Many years ago, my father added peanut butter to egg rolls. Boy, it was really good. Tree nut…

Are they still not doing dine in?

Just drove by and sign in the window says they are not doing dine in currently.

Are they doing dine-in dimsum now?

    No, they are not.

Was feeling hangry because I had planned on stopping at Hard Times for a bowl of chili -and found out they were closed on Mondays. So, pretty much pulled a name out of a hat and would up at Chuan Tian Xia because, well, Szechuan cooking uses chiles, no? Yesssss! I ordered Signature Dumplings and a bowl of Beijing-style Beijing-style Zhajiang Noodles. The dumplings were outstanding: a mix of shrimp, pork, and chive that were plump, juicy, fragrant with the herbaceous flavor of chives. The accompanying sauce was not too sweet, not too hot, just right as a complement to the dumplings. Yowza. I was a happy camper... ...and then I dug into my noodles. Double yowza! Thick wheat noodles topped with a rich sauce made from (I think) fermented soybean paste and braised pork belly, garnished with cucumbers. The portion was way to big for me to eat after my flight, but I really, really enjoyed it (and the remaining dumplings) for lunch today. Did I say yowza? I'm an adventurous eater so the menu's less Americanized items were what I would have ordered given more time (like Maoxuewang: can you say "pig's tongue, spam, pork intestine, and beef tripe"? Protein is protein, baby!). Just means I need to come back, and I will, as quickly as I can.

I thought everything was really good, despite having somewhat confusing descriptions on the menu. The dumplings were super spicy and I only ate a few, and took the rest home. The portions are surprisingly large, the soup came with additional bowls which made sharing easy. The only downside is really the size and noise. It is a tiny restaurant, and it gets crowded, so it can be quite loud.

A solid spot for sharing with a group, and I'd happily return to explore more of the menu. I really wanted to love this place. The soup dumplings are among the better ones in the area. While the wrappers aren't as thin or chewy as the very best, you can tell they're handmade, and I'll always appreciate that. I'd recommend sticking with the pork soup dumplings since they were rich, savory, and full of umami. The crab version unfortunately didn't have any noticeable crab flavor and tasted almost identical to the pork. The duck came in a generous portion and is a great choice for anyone who enjoys sweeter flavors. The watercress was fresh and plentiful, but it could have used much more garlic. We ended up adding the wonton chili oil and dipping it for extra flavor. The cucumber was delicious, but the portion was way too small. The bean curd was cooked well, though there wasn't enough pork for a dish that was supposed to feature it. The fish was another highlight with light spice, a crispy exterior, and perfectly cooked, tender meat. Overall, I'd definitely come back to try more dishes. I enjoy the home-style cooking, and it's the kind of restaurant that's especially fun to visit with a larger group so you can sample a variety of dishes.
