In true German style I, ahem, indulged in some drinking here last night, thanks to my boyfriend's affinity for those giant, giant glass mugs of beer. I think we had 6 of them. I can't believe that. Remember to turn in your glasses to get your euros back! It's not super cheap or anything like that, but the food and drinks come in huge serving sizes and then you get to sit in an atmosphere of indulgent drinking all around! Into our 3rd and 4th beer mugs, we suddenly discovered that the people around us were awesome, and we made friends and they got really drunk with us too! Christmas Markets are the best thing about December in Munich. Period. I like this one quite a lot, mostly because getting there involves a walk through the English Garden -- one of my favorite things to do in Munich all year round. The food choices and Gluhwein (warm spiced wine) are not as extensive at this one, so maybe plan to stop by here when you're not particularly hungry. Just get the sweet roasted almonds to hold you over. what I noticed about this one -- subject to the disclaimer that I am not a mom myself -- is it seems a little more kid-focused than many of the other Christmas markets. if my nieces (ages 6 - 12) were here, I'd take them to this one for sure. They could ride in a horse-drawn carriage (I think it's 2.50€ per kid, 3€ for adults) and they could work on their German at the Grandma's storytelling hut and at the Grandpa's toy-making hut [i think that's what was going on there!] Depending on the time/day, it also can get a little crowded. read more

My favorite biergarten of the trip, located right in the .Englischer Garten and marking the border of the Chinesischer Tum. The amount of tables is massive, and the selection in terms of food is the best you'll get for any beer garten. Tons of pretzels, schnitzel, pork knuckle, and of course beer on beer. Star off because food wasn't all too phenomenal, but the beer at $8 a liter is alright. What makes this place is the area, as you can really just enjoy the spacious lot set aside in the middle of the park, and knock back some brews while waiting down the sunset. Usually bands play from inside the Chinesischer Tum, and after a long day biking through the gartens nothing says bike and booze like this place. If you've already been to Hofbräuhaus München, which is the most popular and touristy beer garden in Munich, I'd definitely recommend checking out Chinesischen Turm. There's a much cheaper self-servce cafeteria style option to grab your food and beer from various booths which Hofbräuhaus doesn't offer. There's plenty of traditional German food to try such as fried pork knuckles, bratwursts, ribs, etc. Like others mentioned, the ambiance is pretty magical. It's such a beautiful and fun environment with live music, pretty lights, and plenty of communal tables to meet locals and other people from around the world. read more

Busy Biergarten in a highly-trafficked section of the Englischer Garten. You come here because of the crowds, not in spite of them. The beer they serve - Hofbräu - is, in my opinion, second only to Augustiner among the Munich Big Six. Prices are good (7.20 + deposit), atmosphere is festive, and sunny and shady spots are plentiful. As I write this a brass band plays from the Chinesischer Turm. Kitchy? Somewhat. My husband and I visited the Englischer Garden and ate near the Chinese Tower. We shared the potatoes/wurst plate, garden salad, large pretzel, and beer. The food was mediocre, but we REALLY loved the atmosphere. The picnic benches that are set up around the Chinese tower fill up entirely on a normal evening. The prices were reasonable, food variety good, and conversation flowing. Definitely a must see when visiting Munich! Dogs welcome. read more

Chinesischer Turm in the Englischer Garten is, without a doubt, a must for all--local or not. It is not so much about the food (the usual Bavarian cuisine and beers with its usual expensive prices) but more of the environment. A beautiful (yet ironic) Chinese-styled pagoda with the oompah band playing in the tower serves as a nice backdrop while one enjoys the beautiful weather, decent food, great company (be advised--this place get quite packed!), etc. Then afterwards, one can digest by strolling in the peaceful park. It's a bit of a walk for us to go here so we don't go as often as perhaps this fine establishment deserves, but we've never been disappointed. The food is good quality and varied (Steckerlfisch anyone?), the long lines drain faster than you would think, the brass musicians in the tower play on, and the toilets are good. We don't have small kids anymore but the location in a ginormous park would make it easy to keep them entertained. There may be more interesting Biergartens but this one is a sure thing; unless you really have a better idea, this is a good place to go when the weather is nice. Sitting next to the Chinese Pagoda and listening to the band was a big plus for this place. The food was good, but the service was very very slow. I did not understand why it was so slow since the place was not overcrowded. I think it was our server who had too much to deal with. Having worked as a server before I can understand, but this guy was much slower than I could accept. I've been to quite a few Biergartens since I've lived in München and this is bar far my favorite. It used to be a local place for me when I lived in Schwabing. However, I now live on the opposite end of town and I still go to the Chinese Tower whenever possible. Not many Biergartens have live Bayerischer Musik and such good food. It's just a München sort of place in the middle of one of the most beautiful public parks in the world... the English Garten. The feeling here cannot be duplicated anywhere else. On a sunny, warm day, there are few places I'd rather be hanging out with friends than the Chinese Tower. read more

Woohoo! As good as it gets! It was a nice walk through the English garden to get there. The garden was beautiful. This place was insanely huge. It was about 10c out and the place was packed. The bier lines were at minimum 8 deep, but moved fast. Great value for the Hofbräu Maß beers. They were like 8€, super deal. Had a couple pretzels with some butter. It was a great afternoon. You could also choose to eat self-service from the many vendors in the Biergarten. Stick around until the music starts from the 2nd level of the tower.....just a fantastic time. When we arrived in Munich, our AirBnb was not fully clean so we tossed our bags in the apartment and went on an adventure to find some beer. Our first though was to head straight to the English Gardens, just a few blocks away, and find the famous chinese tower with the equally famed beer garden around the base. Once finding it, we quickly circled the food and beer stalls and learned that we would be looking for liters of beer and two sausage (one white and one red) with potato wedges. We paid at the register (1 Euro deposit on the steins and keep those mini coins) and went to grab seats out in the large cluster of bright green picnic tables. They were speckled with families, couples or groups of friends, young gossiping and old playing cards. This was midday Monday but many people were drinking beer and jovially enjoying the fantastically warm September weather. As far as first meals in a new city, I'd say this ranked pretty high on the list. We returned later during the week after a long walk through the city, exploring both banks of the river and undoubtedly thirsty. We quickly grabbed the end of a picnic table and each ran in to grab either beer or food. Another round of lagers (in liter form obviously) in addition to a couple of white sausage and fries. I also tried the potato salad which was also quite good. Just realize that they prefer to have 20 euro minimum on the card however, they will let you get away with less. I got my food for around 15euro and was just told to remember for next time. We had the great pleasure of seeing a band set up in the tower the second time we were there and they performed a few songs while we finished up our meals. Clearly this place warranted a return trip from us so at the very least head there once yourself on your trip. read more

Super crowded touristy spot. In a pretty location under an out of place Chinese pagoda. It's a cafeteria ordering style which was out of half of the food they offer by 2pm on a Sunday. They charge a €1 deposit per glasses. The busboy (by "boy" I mean old man) will take your tray, steal your deposit coin and claim ignorance. What a scam. read more

It's a beautiful day to do a brauhaus moment and the Chinese pagoda is the perfect area to do it. Lots of self service and the prices are modest and appropriate. I had the Weisswurst and the Bavarian pretzel with a huge side of Munich local beer. The Weisswurst were delicious, the pretzel was kinda hard and a bit too salty. If you are going to Munich in any time other than the dead of winter, I suggest you have to go to the Chinesischer-turm. This is also known as the Chinese Tower. Which is a neat structure in the middle of the English Garden. Let me start with a description of the English Garden, it is about 3 miles long by 1 mile wide. It is full of beautiful grassy fields, streams, ponds and small groves of trees. It is a beautiful site in the city, a great place to get away from it all. In true German fashion, there is a beer garden at the Chinese Tower. This is a great place to grab a little food, a beer or two and just relax for a few hours under the shade of chestnut trees. There are plenty of picnic tables to choose from. It is self service in a cafeteria style. You get in to line and you can pick up your beer (or other beverage), and then select what you'd like to eat. The sausages were good, but the swinehaxen (Pig's knuckle) was awesome. You pick up what you want and pay on the way out to the table. They will give you a plastic coin when for each glass you take out. This is a deposit of one Euro so you will return the glass. Be sure to pick up a pretzel on the way out. Also, there is a separate stand that sells smoke mackerel on a stick. If you like seafood, this is the way to go. Once we got our food, we sat down and drank our liters of beer (aka a "Mass"). And enjoyed a lovely afternoon of eating, drinking, talking and people watching. That is something that is hard to beat. Will I be back? Yes, I will, I really enjoyed this place. read more

We visited on a really hot Sunday (32 C). The Englischer Garden was full of folks enjoying the beautiful weather. We found a spot at a table under the chestnut trees which helped cut the heat. After a Maß of Hofbrau beer we sampled the self-serve food. Lots of German classics at very fair prices. Being in Munich I had to get the Schweinhaxe (pork knuckle) with rotkohl (red cabbage). Great comfort food and very well prepared. Some of the best roast pork I have ever tasted. If you are in Munich during a weekend, this is a fun place to visit for a few hours. read more

Even though I am from Munich I enjoy coming here on a hot summer day and having a cool beer. Of course it is not laid back but it is fun. Also you can bring your own food (something that is supposed to be possible in all beer gardens but naturally is not). Adjacent there is a playground for kids which comes in quite handy. I would not say it is worth taking an extra trip there but if you are in the area it's worth checking out for sure! read more

This restaurant where we had dinner serves great German food (not Chinese as we thought from the name). The preparations and service were both very good, and the prices were reasonable. Spacious. Good exterior and interior décor. We were pleasantly surprised when our waiter Marin offered and got us tap water at no charge. (Unlike the usual German restaurant practice of only serving overpriced bottled water.) In addition to a meat preparation the vegetarian dish we had was also very good, as was the beer. read more
