I never write reviews. I lived in Richmond for 8 years. The Made in Turkey Club is maybe my favorite meal of all time. Whenever I am in Richmond, I buy 2 or 3 of these and bring them home. I get extra prosciutto on each of them. It is so unbelievably delicious. The "That Hot Sauce" is also absolutely out of this world. I buy 2 or 3 bottles to bring home and there is not a single sandwich I will eat without putting a ton of that on it. Go to this place. Support it. Buy the hot sauce. The Made In Turkey Club, The French Dip, and so many others are just 10 out of 10 delicious. Also - they have one small oven that they use to make 2 sandwiches at a time. It takes forever. Get over it. It is worth it. If you want fast, go to McDonald's. I would wait 2 hours for this sandwich. read more

I love that this place is on a residential street in a cool neighborhood, been there since the Forties, and has a good vibe. If Covid didn't exist, I would love to just sit there and have a beer with some locals. My daughter found this place after seeing a tik tok video. Holy sh*t Chiocca's (pronounced Cha-Kas) sandwiches are LEGIT!!! Between the 4 of us we had the Turkey, Pastrami, & Liverwurst. Each of them were phenomenal but I've gotta say they Turkey was OUTSTANDING! Later while telling friends about this place I was literally salivating. I have no idea what that little oven does but omg it's pure magic! We tried to go back the next day to try the Rueben and so I could get my own Turkey Sammy but unfortunately they were closed womp womp! Chiocca's is Delicious - the coldcut sandwiches are HUGE. I ordered The Dagwood, piled high with Thumann's cold cuts - it is big enough to split with a friend, and wash down with a couple of cold beers. The atmosphere is nice, this is an authentic bar with history shown on the walls thrpugh photographs, and memorabilia, the wait staff is courteous and customers are nice & with a few visits, it quickly feels like it is your long-time neighbourhood pub. It sure felt that way to me. I never leave hungry, the beer selection is very good, and I always wish I had more time to spend there. read more

This place used to be known for The BEST sandwiches in town. I have not been in there for awhile. But today I went there anticipating the enjoyment of their once famous Italian sub. Sadly, I was greatly disappointed. Every bite you could taste the burnt bread. I have good friends whom are in food preparation in numerous area restaurants. The photo of the burnt bread I showed them confirmed that it is not normal procedure. But on the good side, bartender and waitress were friendly, cordial and very enjoyable to talk too. If you want a great atmosphere for drinking that is the place! Hopefully they figure out their problems in the kitchen. A charming and inviting dive that serves up great cut-to-order deli sandwiches. It's hard to find a steak sub that actually has medium rare steak, but Chiocca's delivered. With a well toasted bun, a hint of Worcestershire sauce, and perfectly melted provolone, even a Philadelphian would be satisfied. They also once again pleased my brother with the "Made in Turkey" club, his staple which he almost deviated from ordering but broke down and ordered when the waiter came. A Chiocca's take on the classic turkey club, the "Made in Turkey" club uses prosciutto in place of bacon. As far as everything else goes, the wait staff was informative and friendly, as if welcoming a neighbor into their home. The walls are clutered with various pictures, pennants, and animals that conjures up thoughts of something between a famous barber shop and a lodge. The prices are very reasonable, between $6-9 for sandwiches and $8.50 for a 64 oz pitcher of beer. If you're ever in the fan, I highly recommend this delightful deli dive. read more

Sandwiches are good, a little pricey. Super slow and inattentive service. They use a very small propane oven to cook the sandwiches (two at a time, so it takes forever). I went on a holiday Monday afternoon. Chill spot, wasn't already busy and there wasn't a huge lunch rush while I waited after ordering, however it did take a while for my food to be prepared. They only have one toaster oven. Before my food arrived, someone that sat at the bar next to me was told that it was about an hour and fifteen minute wait for food. I'd like to try the other sandwiches but I'm hesitant to come back after hearing that wait time. No coffee, I suppose it's more a bar than a deli? Panini was salty, but still good. The atmosphere is creepy, old, and musty. Water barely came out of the faucet when I tried to wash my hands. I didn't even want to use the restroom there. It looked so sketchy. I took a glance at the cutting board in the kitchen area, and it appeared to have all kinds of visible stains. They should probably get a new one. I ordered a coke and it barely had any carbonation in it. Food was good, but waaaay over priced. I should've gone to subway instead. Overall experience was bad. Hidden gem in the Museum District. I've been in RVA for four years and finally stumbled upon Chiocca's. I couldn't decide on corned beef or pastrami, so I got both. I'm impressed. I've visited all the other 'name' RVA deli's and have been mostly disappointed. Granted, my expectations are somewhat high, but when I seek a deli pastrami I'm looking for more than sliced lunch meat on white bread. Chiocca's didn't just hit the bar they surpassed it. This is a special place. The pricing is right in line with the portions, and you get a meal-sized sandwich along with chips and pickles. I seriously can't believe it has taken me YEARS to finally try this place out. Shocked. We had such a great sammich that it has been all I can think about recently...it was that GOOD. We read the reviews and heard about the wait and we were ok with it. The four of us sat down, ordered drinks, and pulled out the trivial pursuit boardgame they had and played it for about 45 minutes...and then right before I was about to lose...my food came.....what a freakin' savior!! I ordered the Dagwood sandwich which had huge layers of turkey, roast beef, pastrami, and the topped with provolone and swiss, a bit of thousand island dresing and pickles all on rye bread. The thing was huge and I could only eat half of it. I wish I had a side of the thousand island to dip it in because at times it needed a little more of something. The others order The Club, (your typical club but even bigger), the Spice "sub" and also the "downstairs". All looked delicious but I really think i'd like to try the spice next time I go. Our service was absolutely fine...the waitress was really busy and for how busy she was, she was extremely friendly. Go hear, order a pitcher of beer and one of their delicious sandwiches, and enjoy! This is my First trip to Chiocca's as I have driven by it many many times. I heard nothing but great things about the Downstairs Restaurant. So, when I approached Chiocca's... I thought I was entering the Movie set "Cheers". It was quant to say the least, and very cozy. A great place to hang and to have a few Cold Ones with a good Hot/Cold sandwich. The Waitress was very prompt and of course she brought over my Ice Tea. I came because of another yelper, LadieJaymes and Jamie recommended me to make a visit. So, I could not wait to try their sandwich, especially the Richmond "Original"; The Sailor Sandwich. Upon my ordering, I asked the Waitress if she knew where the Sailor originated from... She said New York! Oh, No... I could not believe they sell the Sailor and do not know where it got it's start. So, I am thinking to myself. Will this Sandwich be as good because for those who know it is a Richmond Sandwich designed here in WWII by the New York Deli on Cary St. They take EXTRA Pride in making this Sandwich. The "Sailor" represents the great city of Richmond, Va. I watched the Chef carefully make this sandwich, and in the meantime, my mouth was watering for the taste of the Sailor. To me, if a Restaurant has the Sailor... It is a sign of a GREAT Deli in how they make the Sailor. Remember, it is all about Pride! I am giving the Sandwich 5 Stars. I did have to ask for some additional mustard as I love Yellow Mustard on the Sailor. It has a nice contrast to all the flavors working for it. The only thing I felt, they should have had French Fries or some Potato Salad to the order other than just Potato Chips. I felt with the price they were asking, which was more than most Restaurants for the same sandwich... You should have received at least a side of Potato Salad, as they do have Deli on their door. I am giving 4 Stars because of the higher than Normal price on the Sandwich with just the Chips ONLY. Now, that I have been to Chiocca's, I plan to go back and try other Sandwiches on their Menu. I've been to Chiocca's a few times for lunch, and i always really enjoy the sandwiches. Be prepared for a monster sandwich and a long lunch break. The menu is straightforward - don't expect a lot of secret sauces or fancy combos. You're coming here for a classic sandwich, some chips, and maybe a beer, and that's a good thing because those are the things Chiocca's does well. The service is usually good, but it can take awhile to get your food. The reason is they're operating with a very small oven, and I believe that their location prevents them from upgrading. If you're there at a busy time, it could take a half hour for a toasted sandwich. I enjoy the bar atmosphere. It's a basement space decorated with old photos and signs. All in all it reminds me of Cheers - a beer joint for the neighborhood. Its a cozy spot that you don't see a lot of in Richmond and it works. read more

I ordered a Reuben and my boyfriend ordered The Son of a Beast, a sub piled high with roast beef, cheddar, green peppers, lettuce, tomato, onion, and horseradish. The Reuben was very good, though it didn't have as much Thousand Island dressing on it as I would have liked. The Beast was definitely the better choice. I don't mind paying a premium for good quality food but for $15, I was expecting a little more than a sandwich drenched in oil, plain utz potato chips, and a warm soggy pickle with no crisp. Cool hole in the wall atmosphere, friendly but hands off servers and good sandwiches. Homemade and hot and on the salty side. Comes with a side of chips. What a hidden little gem Chiocca's is. The giant sub sandwiches are good, but the real draw here is just the familial-feeling, underground dive bar atmosphere. If you're not starved, you could definitely share a single sandwich and be happy. If you do split one, they give each of you your own chips and pickle, which is quite nice! Beers are very affordable and they have a solid selection of local drafts and imports. There are daily beer specials (check the board) as well as happy hour pricing. The bar size is fairly cozy, so better to come solo or with a partner in crime over a large group. Grab a seat at the rail if you can, the bartenders are great. read more
