We went to this place for the first time tonight and OMG‼ RUN....do not walk to the New York Deli!!! It's right next to the Byrd Theater so it was perfect for dinner after a movie. Our server was Braxton, a delightful young lady. She was witty and a diligent server and all the things...and she did not steer us wrong when it came to the food. My husband and I both had a taste for ordering an Italian sub and Braxton said we would not be sorry if we ordered it, and we were not. I was literally moaning with almost every bite. I am a potato salad connoisseur. I will not eat it unless it is freshly made. I don't do any of the grocery store type of potato salads. (Gross!) I asked Braxton about it and she said that in general, she doesn't even like potato salad, but at this restaurant, she absolutely loves it and highly recommends it. Knowing it is freshly made on site, plus her recommendation, I decided to try it. Oh my word! This potato salad is straight from the portals of heaven. Sooooooo good. This might not seem like a big deal, but it's a very big deal to me. I like freshly brewed tea. Nothing bottled. Nothing out of a soda machine. (Disgusting!) I asked Braxton if the tea was actually brewed there and she said yes. Tea is not the same everywhere. Sometimes it's so weak, you don't even realize it's tea. Not here! It was perfect. This makes a huge difference to me as when my beverage is perfect, I enjoy my meal a lot more. The entire meal was top notch. The service was absolutely excellent. We loved having Braxton and would ask for her again. A DJ was setting up as we were eating. We learned that they have karaoke and trivia nights earlier in the week as well as dance nights on the weekends. My husband and I mentioned that we would definitely come back and bring friends. Came here during the watermelon fest. They had an event specific simplified menu so we were limited in our options. The bartender was a nice guy who was eager to get us drinks while we waited for a table. The wait was short and the host was kind. My husband and I split the fried chicken wrap and got the watermelon salad as our side. I thought it was very strange that regardless of side choice, there was an upcharge. The food was amazing. Everyone enjoyed everything they got. We didn't see our waitress a bunch but it was super busy so we didn't hold it against her. I do believe she forgot about us while we were waiting for the check though. We waited quite a while and she was just around the corner giggling with coworkers. My friend and I went here for lunch and for me to try the Sailor sandwich (look it up on Wikipedia and find that it was named the Sailor sandwich and from this location!). Sandwich is great and very filling. Service was outstanding and the IPAs were cold and delicious. The restaurant looks original to the way it looked in the 1940's and the bartender knew a lot about the history of the deli. Located in the heart of Carytown this is a great spot for breakfast, lunch, dinner or late night if you are looking for traditional New York deli style / diner food. There is free street parking. They have a full bar with bar seating and traditional restaurant seating along with a rooftop. They get into all the different holidays and decorate along with offering f&b specials. They have a milkshake menu that includes boozy milkshakes. They have a weekday brunch, which is nice. On the weekends, the branch is expanded. I believe you can get the full menu at any time. We went on a holiday Monday and there were three of us, we arrived right at 11 AM which is when it said they open and before we knew it the place was filled up, but we did not have to wait for a table. The servers were all very friendly and helpful. I enjoyed a grilled cheese sandwich on rye bread and french fries which was as good as any I have had with multiple types of cheese. My mother had a chicken tender with honey mustard wrap that included lettuce and tomatoes. They make their chicken tenders fresh in-house and they are huge. She got the potato salad, it is not a traditional, southern potato salad, but it is creamy and there is no relish. My friend had a stuffed French toast with a vodka raspberry couli which was served with eggs and bacon and she also got an order of onion rings. The french fries are beer battered but fresh made in house and tasted great. The pricing is very reasonable. If I lived in this area, I would get food here a couple of times a month. Yes the food is good, they have a great menu with a lot of options. My daughter got a chicken ceasar wrap and fries. The bartender took our order, gave suggestions and was easy on the eyes too lol. First time to this place after living in Richmond for 3 years was mostly a success! We arrived around 1pm on a sunny, warm Saturday and there were still a couple of seats left on the rooftop, which was a great surprise. The service was slow to start, but once the server noticed us, the flow of food and drinks was quick and easy from there. The food is nothing to write home about at all, but it was okay for munching while enjoying the sunshine and drinks. The drinks were really good and fairly reasonably priced. This used to be the hangout spot when I was in college. Now I rarely ever go, but a friend suggested it for lunch today because we figured it would be quick enough to be done in time for a meeting later. Parking is usually terrible in Carytown, but I managed to find a spot on Cary Street a few feet away from NY Deli. My friend arrived shortly before me and ordered herself a Diet Coke, and a water for me. I ordered a club sandwich on white bread with fries when I arrived. My friend then ordered pastrami, scrambled eggs, and Swiss on an English muffin and fries. When the food arrived, since I never ordered a "real" drink from our waiter (it slipped my mind, and the waiter never asked), I asked the server (different person from our waiter) for a glass of pineapple juice which was delivered promptly. The fries were fantastic - battered and crispy. One side of my club's bread slice was burnt but hidden facedown. I don't mind visually dark bread if it tastes alright, but the flavor was burnt and bitter. It ruined my craving for the club, so I sent back the sandwich and opted for an order of pretzels instead. The beer cheese looked a bit weird and watery but was pretty good. I will caution that it's a strong, sharp cheese. The pretzels were soft, piping hot, and glistening with butter. Pretty tasty. When the waiter returned with the check, my friend had left for the restroom. I confirmed to the waiter that we wanted separate checks. He looked at my empty glass and asked, "What was this? Just an orange juice?" I responded that it was pineapple juice. He then asked, "And just the pretzels and the water?" I told him yes and then paid. Unfortunately, they have one of those mobile pay terminals where they read you your total and you immediately pay right there. I usually ask them to print out my tab before paying, but it was such a small order I decided to simply pay. The waiter then got to my friend to close out but tried to add the pineapple juice to her tab. He then turned to me with a snarky tone and said, "I JUST asked you if it was just the pretzels and the water and you said yes." I maintained my composure and reminded him that he asked me about the juice when preparing my tab and I didn't realize that (or understand why) he omitted it. My friend graciously put it on her tab and I reimbursed her. We all make mistakes and have misunderstandings, but the nasty tone was uncalled for. I'm glad a more patient version of me responded to this situation instead of college-age me because WHEW, tf?! Given the only saving grace today was the fries, I see no reason to return to NY Deli unless I'm hanging out with someone else who wants to go. read more

Wife and I went to carytown to meet up with some of her classmates. We got there early to eat. They all ended up being way late so we and drank and drank and drank. We split the sailor. I say split but it was probably more 80% me 20% for her. It was really good oh lord. The pastrami was fantastic and the sausage on top was juicy. They have the good fries which we really enjoyed. When the rest of our party got there, my wife got a sandwich for herself. She got the Cuban, which wasn't bad but not anything special. This used to be a great hang out spot with simple food and a very fun night life. DJ, dancing, outside patio, and great vibes. Bartenders and servers always seemed like they were happy to work there. Now... They updated the menu to create more of an upscale vibe ever since the rooftop opened, but the quality of the food didn't really go up with the price. I used to think of it as the top choice to grab a bite to eat, or to go out with friends late on the weekends in Cary town but they really have gone downhill and it's sad to see. The most alarming part is there have recently been multiple fights, specifically drunk men have been assaulting women and actually punching them. I've seen with my own eyes security just letting it happen and it's gotten to the point where it was reported on the local news and the victims were interviewed... I also have a friend who I have seen first hand hand followed around by and hit on by one the security guards after she has told him to stop multiple times. She won't even go there anymore because it was so uncomfortable. It also used to be a very "Richmond" vibe of all races sexualities and ages which is why it was so enjoyable there. It's become very "fratty" and any sign of anything pride related has quietly been taken down... which for Cary town is very interesting... Get it together guys read more

They filled up fast though and were full by 1245. I had the sailor sandwich with fries and Nancy the Reuben with potato salad. Great potato salad! I liked the sailor knock worst and grilled corn beef and Swiss. Nancy thought her Ruben had too much fat. Service was top notch with water refills and asking what else we needed. Only disappointment were the fries. I got about 12-15 for the $1 extra and they weren't hot. Setting is typical upscale bar with a separate table area. Their claim to fame is being the first restaurant in Richmond - which already made it feel special, and honestly the place has some solid character. Think high end hot dog meets a pastrami melt - and it just WORKED. My partner loved the fish and chips too - quite a generous helping. Ive finally got the chance to try New York Deli. I went on a Saturday afternoon, wasn't too busy. We immediately went to the the rooftop Tiki bar, great addition might I add. It's so cute and aesthetic. I have a food page if you want to see more (javellgoodeats). The rooftop gives you full access to the Food menu as well as drink menu. Their drink menu is extremely small and a bit lack luster. They only had beer and cider on there. If you wanted a margarita or anything else then you'd basically have to tell them. Instead of picking drinks from a set menu. I was expecting more on themed drinks to match the whole "rock away beach" theme. We got drinks in these basic plastic cups. Idk if it's cause we were on the rooftop why more effort wasn't put into the drinks. After that, I just opted for ciders and beer. Those were pretty affordable anyway. Now, the vibes of the rooftop was immaculate, it gets pretty busy after 8. They could have a better music selection. First it was good when we just got there and then it drastically went down. The food was pretty good, I got the classic club and that comes with fries. The portion was huge and I appreciated that. I can't remember what my partner got. I also know sometimes they have a DJ. I am a Buffalo chicken wrap connoisseur and have been on the hunt to find one singular good Buffalo chicken wrap since I moved her. Well, New York Deli has it folks! Their wrap was delicious, and pretty big. I get it with no tomato's and ranch on the side for dipping, and it's to die for. The wrap is a little bit loose, I wish it were a tad tighter so none of my chicken fell out as I was eating. My fries were a little soggy which was disappointing bc I think they would've been really crunchy and delicious if they weren't, but I think it's just from the to-go container! Besides with a wrap this good, to have fries this great with them as well is rare. Went here for a late lunch back in August and it was fantastic. The food was tasty and portions decent and the price point was fine. I'm a sucker for some decent fries and these knocked it out of the park. Crispy outside and tender inside. The chicken wrap was bursting with seasoned chicken and the perfect amount of crisp lettuce and yummy ceasar dressing. The island bowl hit the spot for our pescatarian in the group and the cheddar jalapeno waffle with chicken and an egg was tasty and filling. The best gem about this restaurant is the unique roof top bar with large seating area that is perfect to eat outside and get some fresh air. In the evenings I can easily envision just chilling there with friends as a great way to unwind after work. Employees were attentive and friendly, prices were reasonable, portions were perfect.
