Jarret is an exceptional team manager and gets five stars. My laptop is happy, which means I am happy. A while back, I contacted Chipheads for a comparison quote on the replacement of a laptop keyboard and frame after a water spill fried a touchpad. The first place I had visited for a quote was a lovely one-man shop that quoted me $300 minimum for the repair - and that was with full awareness that I'd already purchased my own replacement parts and therefore all cost on his part was purely labor. He also communicated clearly that accessing the keyboard area required moving multiple parts he was not entirely familiar with and laughed that he would have to give me the $2000+ laptop he'd tried to sell me if the repair didn't go well. I left the establishment unconvinced of his capability to fix my also $2000+ design powerhouse that had not left my side since I got her. Enter Chipheads. I contacted via the general email address on the website, outlining the general situation and requesting a quote. Chipheads teammate Scott responded, and the quote he gave was comparable. I then emailed to confirm that I'd ordered the right parts before making the decision to put my laptop basically in the hospital right before I was going to be gone for a full two weeks, so I wouldn't be able to get her back even if the parts were wrong and repairs could not be done. Scott never responded to that email, and I had to leave for my out-of-town event. When I'm home, I rely on my laptop heavily, so dropping off when I'm not occupied with an event is not ideal. When another long event came up on my schedule, I contacted Chipheads again, this time creating a new email thread directing back to the general email address - the previous thread had directed to Scott's email address after we connected. I admit that I was hoping that I would connect with Jarret this time, and I did. He responded not only quickly but also giving me the option of a two-week repair period for less than $200. I'd be occupied with my event for exactly that amount of time anyway, so this was perfect. When I arrived the day before my event started, Jarret was with another guest. Both the impression that the first shop had given me about the delicate nature of my repair and my own experience in tinkering with laptops and electronics in general added to why I specifically waited to speak directly with Jarret given the impression of reliability he gave me in our correspondence. I dropped my laptop off with Jarret the day before my event started. Less than 48 hours later, he called to let me know that my laptop was ready for pickup. That was back in August. I specifically waited to ensure that the laptop was in perfect working order before leaving a review. It's now October. Safe to say, my laptop is in good health. Dropping one star for Scott dropping the ball on communication. Regardless, I'd wholeheartedly recommend Chipheads for your repair and upgrade needs. read more

They didn't take their time to fix the problem on my computer. My ac adapter wasn't taking its charge on any of the chargers that I used. The screws were stripped so I took it to Chipheads and told them the issue with my ac adapter and I even came with a new ac adapter for them to replace the old one with and I handed them the new adapter with the computer to get it fixed. I returned a few days later and they handed me back my computer along with the ac adapter I gave them but they didn't bother to replace it and instead told me that it was my charger itself that was faulty. I decided to trust them and they gave me a new charger along with having fixed the stripped screws, it was pretty pricey. I got home and I was having the same issues so I took it to my school to get the part replaced. They replaced the part for me at my school and it immediately took its charge. I am very disappointed in this. This tells me that they didn't care enough to give me good service and didn't put any time into figuring out the problem and as a result I ended up spending all that money and driving out there wasting my time over nothing read more

Second time I've used Chipheads, and just as good as the first. Kevin was great, and we talked a couple of times during the course of repair. He explained options, and found some other items that needed replacement. I appreciate that kind of foreknowledge. Kev said that he would'nt be in when I picked up the laptop, but if I had any probs we probably could resolve them over the phone. That was for items I wanted to install on my own after finding the passwords. But like the first time, I plugged it in and it was just perfect. I asked them for a simple job quote, they told me "oh we charge $189 an hour, so 15-30 mins (between 47-94$)" just to install a new hard drive in my asus laptop. I was not even asking them to reinstall windows 11 or anything, I was gonna do that myself. Go somewhere else, I mean seriously. Not worth the gas even to get there /back just to get overcharged even before you get there. read more

Total failures.$170 for nothing. Of course, everything was easy to do beforehand, until they actually got possession of the hard drive; then they could not get anything done except charging my credit card. It seems this is mainly a referral business for a higher end charge of $2500 in eden prairie. They will refer you for data collection to this business and will not even try to help you in any way for the $170. instead, I recommend waitMing until you meet somebody you trust because most in the computer field are either incompetent, scammers or both. It is always easy over the phone but then impossible once they have your computer. They could not not even get the hard drive to spin! This is a very common problem and they act like it's never happened before. chipheads is not going to help you and I would never use any business they refer me to either. I brought in my gaming laptop because it wouldn't turn on. The man who took my computer "tested" my charger said it was fine. They kept my computer overnight. I was told for gaming computers it was 169(?) an hour. I came to pick it up and was told they unplugged the battery from the motherboard and plugged it back in, and the battery charged and the computer turned on several times. "It might happen again (not turning on), you never know." They charged me an hour for that! They did say they updated windows and somesuch but i have auto updates on... It stopped working again 2 days later. I decided to buy a new charger see if that did anything and that was all I needed. I am not happy to be out that money, seems RIDICULOUS! My wife dislodged the power supply in her laptop. Rather than mess with it ourselves, she took it to Chipheads St Paul location (only a handful of blocks from home). Professional, courteous, honest, good communicators and most importantly with computer repair, they actually knew what they were doing! While they were tinkering around in there, they also fixed her wonky cd/dvd drive bay. We've had the machine back for a week or two now with no complaints. I have had the same old laptop for almost 9 years. I am fairly frugal and figure why invest in a new one as long as the one I have is working. I spilled some water on the keyboard and lost the use of a few keys. I looked up computer repair and figured I would check these guys out. I called ahead to see if I needed an appt and was told that I could just stop in. I was also told there current turn around was about a week. So I stopped in one morning on my way to work expecting to just drop off my laptop. The gentleman who helped me immediately recognized how old my laptop was which impressed me. I explained that happened and he stated he thought he had a keyboard in stock that might help. He began working on my laptop right away. I was thinking how about this for service. He brought out a new keyboard, replaced my current keyboard and everything was working again. He tightened up a few screws, cleaned up my laptop and I was back in business. These guys were extremely genuine and helpful. They are the real deal and will not charge you for unnecessary product or services. My daughter's laptop was acting up, we thought it may be a virus, so we called Chipheads. They said they would spend 5-10 minutes running a free diagnostic. When we took the laptop in, that is exactly what they did. The gentleman helping us hooked the laptop up, ran a diagnostic, found nothing wron, and answered my questions as to what was a best anti-virus software. Unlike the bigger IT companies, these guys were not about the up-sell. I will take my other computers back for any service because this company and these tech's are not trying rip you off. I'm fairly knowledgeable about computers, having built my own gaming/editing PC, but when my computer stopped booting up all of a sudden, I found these guys on yelp -- which turned out to be the best thing Yelp's ever done for me. I could talk for an hour on how great my experience was, but I'll try to sum it up in a few sentences: I would recommend this service to ANYONE with ANY type of computer issue. From the superb customer service to the price, there's nowhere in town that's better. These guys are professionals who were passionate about their craft and the magic of technology. They were attentive in listening to my problem, and then instead of just taking my PC and sending me away, they spent a lot of time explaining what the different problems might be, teaching me about how computers worked in a way that made me feel like I was learning and a part of the repair process. After a day they were able to determine that it was my motherboard that needed replacing and then helped me step by step in the process of how to request a replacement from the company. Then, when the company was being difficult in several different ways that resulted in them not sending me the correct parts for almost two months, Chipheads continued to provide exceptional service, despite the delay. Anytime I had a question or an update, they were prompt to email me back with the exact information I needed. I cannot imagine how stressful this whole thing could have been if I had gone to another company; instead, I constantly felt reassured and that somehow, among all their other customers, my computer was still their #1 priority. I just got back my computer today, and it is absolutely flawless. My MacPro desktop motherboard failed. Also, the hard drive had become corrupted. The computer was too old was not worth repairing. Chipheads was able to recover all my photos, iTunes library, Lightroom library and other important files to an external hard drive which I was able to transfer to my new computer. I was having issues with my laptop (network adapter) beyond my knowledge of computers, however, I knew what needed to be done to get it fixed (replace network adapter). Reluctantly, I took it to Best Buy and GeekSquad told me they needed to run diagnostics ($$$) and then most likely ship it out to the manufacturer to get it fixed (more $$$). Not only it was going to be expensive but also take a while. I already had one sour experience with GS in the past, I don't know why I even bothered going there. I took my laptop back and took it to Chipheads. Not only they understood the fix my computer needed, but they even offered a workaround solution (off the shelf external adapter) that was going to be much cheaper than getting it fixed (replacing the internal part). Even if I chose replacing the internal part it wasn't going to be as expensive as GS. Chipheads guys were very honest, transparent, and helpful. After months of my aging laptop being slow and "weird" I decided to have it serviced. Chipheads has good (albeit limited) reviews and is in a familiar neighborhood so I decided to go with them. We brought it in on a weekday afternoon and talked to the tech for about 10 mins. I was majorly impressed by two things. First, the guy didn't make me feel like an idiot and spoke in mostly laymen's terms. Now, as we all know, IT guys specialize in making the rest of us feel like idiots and pride themselves on speaking a language of their own. So this was a really big deal to me that I wasn't talked down to and the problems and options were explained in terms I could understand. Second, after listening to me and tinkering around for a few minutes, the tech gave me all my service options and did it in a way that wasn't pushy at all. He let me know approximately how long it would take for the (attempted) repair and how much it would cost. Then he also noted that if the repair required parts they would call me to OK the additional time, labor, and parts costs before they proceeded. He also let me know that in some instances it would actually be cheaper to buy a new laptop than for them to perform the repairs and they would also let me know if that was the case. And then he asked me what I wanted to do. No hard sell, just laid out my options in an honest and factual manner. I paid a deposit -- about $98, which seems a bit pricey, but who knows, maybe they've had a problem with people dropping off and not picking up their laptops? -- and was on my way. My laptop was ready about a week and a half later. The rest of the bill was about $90, so it cost me about $200 to have my laptop debugged and checked out. Several months later, it's not running like new, but it's about four and a half years old, so it's never gonna run like new again. But I am receiving fewer error messages and am confident they cleaned up any viruses. Chipheads' motto is "We make you feel smart about computers... Even if you're not!" Disappointed. Wanted a good experience, but brought in a computer whose internal battery needs replacement. I asked how much this would cost. The guy at the counter said he wasn't sure but that it would probably need some internal work and I'd have to provide the battery. He finally came up with a labor cost of $99, a number he seemed to pull out of the air. He really didn't seem to have a clue and didn't try to hide his ignorance. While I dreaded to be without my connection-to-information even 1 day, brought it in to Chipheads on Penn the next day. The initial assessment that it was the screen proved to be accurate. People are desperate need help when they lost their important information. This company is truly helpers and not money hunters. I engaged Chipheads to diagnose start-up issues with a very old Mac G4. After an analysis, they advised that I replace it with a new or refurbished Mac onto which they would transfer all my files over: they stated that a deeper diagnosis on the dead G4 would almost certainly result in me having to replace it anyhow so they didn't want me to spend another $100 or more along that path. They also provided assorted other tips and suggestions on Mac-related issues and were very Mac savvy. The prices were very reasonable: $89.00 down payment when I dropped off my dead G4, and another $23.00 or so for the subsequent data transfer. I would put my complete trust in Chipheads again for all my Mac and PC issues. read more

I brought my Macbook with a cracked screen and dented case into Chipheads. They initially quoted 2 weeks and $329 to fix. I thought that was fair, compared to the cost of replacement, or what Apple was going to charge me to fix it. To my surprise, they called the next day to tell me they had the display and case parts in stock, and my computer would be done that day. In addition, the cost was $30 less than originally quoted. The guy was great on the phone and told me to bring it in they would look at it for a possible quick fix. Brought it in and they knew within 5 minutes that it was a video card. The power supply in my laptop had fried out and I was sure that it was beyond repair. I was referred to two different repair shops before coming to Chipheads, and I am so glad they still do repairs on the motherboard because that's what my laptop required and no other repair shops in the Twin Cities area still do such extensive repairs. First off, the flat rate for the repair was a lot less than what had been estimated by one of the other repair companies I went to first. I was told that companies usually charge hourly for certain repairs, and to come to Chipheads and be quoted a flat rate was wonderful. The staff was very helpful and knowledgeable, and very professional. They explained everything in easy to understand terms, and were very courteous from the second I walked into the shop. The communication throughout the repair process was top notch; they called to update on progress and were days ahead of time with completing the repair. I will NEVER bring my computers anywhere else, this experience was well worth the hour drive to the Cities. I will be telling all my friends and co-workers to come here for their repair needs, without a doubt! read more
