I recently moved and the number one thing I miss about Maryland is Dr. Alterman. I have had shoulder pain and issues with my neck for years, not to mention scoliosis and a slew of other annoying, painful issues. And I've gone to many chiropractors over the years, in multiple states. The ONLY one that's been able to help me and take care of the actual cause of my pain has been Dr. Alterman. Unlike the other chiropractors I've been to, Dr. Alterman doesn't just offer a band-aid solution. She works with you to get to the root of the issue and therefore eliminate it. It's not an easy fix - do not expect to just go one time and *poof* have everything all better instantly like magic. If you want someone to lie to you and tell you they can fix you in one visit, go waste your money elsewhere (and I do mean "waste"). I had three different pain points on my back. I had them for years and neglected to have anything done. Then, quite by chance, I had a pinched nerve at the base of my skull. My GP suggested chiro. My family and I have had a great experience with Dr Alterman and we highly recommend her. I've been treated by her for about 3 months (2 or 3 times a week). I have been so pleased with her care that I have also had her treating both my children with miraculous results (I have a 4 year old girl and 10 year old boy). There are some special needs involved that she handles with compassion. We lovingly refer to our kids as "movers". They can test anyone's patients and Dr. Alterman has never been anything but warm and patient with them, even when she redirects them if they are in her way. My kids are always excited when they get to go see her. She keeps a child's table and chairs with toys right outside the exam room, but my kids come in and out while I'm being treated. The office isn't very large so they will also occasionally walk up to the front desk and visit with the lovely office assistant, Tanya. I can hear them from the exam room. During my initial visit, she performed a thorough evaluation that among other things, measured mobility and symmetry. I found her to be a responsible doctor and very much appreciated that she didn't adjust me until she reviewed my x-Rays. Her web site says the first phase is to reduce symptoms which can take multiple visit. After committing to her treatment plan, I am really happy to say that my back hasn't "gone out" in months, even after a trip to the beach (it always used to go out and spasm after walking on the unstable sand). Dr. Alterman does not take insurance (like many of the better doctors in this area), but she does give you a form you can submit yourself. Dr Alterman is a wonderful doctor who has earned my respect. I've had more than 10 appointments. She not only gave me a relief for current issue but taught me how to pay close attention to my body, the habits that led to the issues (sitting, walking in certain way), and ways to prevent it in future. Never mind the fact I seriously thought for a couple days my neck got damaged by one of her "adjustments" it just smacks of high priced quackery. You lay down and you get your body basically cracked in a couple places, she uses some weird machines that just beat on you. I am a disabled mother with loads of spinal issues. After recently moving to the area, I have been in tremendous pain. As a cash-paying patient, I was inspired by the 'Payment Options' content on Dr. Alterman's website that stated 'Health on a Budget'. That page has since been taken down from Dr. Alterman's website. I was also inspired by Phase I of her relief care plan which states, "if you are in pain when you come to our office, the first objective is to help you feel better".After leaving the first message within Dr. Alterman's office hours, my enthusiasm dimmed. That afternoon, I left a 2nd voicemail in between calling her office several times. I was in tremendous pain. Finally, I received a call back the next day from the receptionist. She scheduled my first appointment, informing me to expect the appointment to last for 90 minutes, that the appointment would include an exam, treatment and a manual adjustment. She never mentioned x rays so I didn't take my xrays. On the day of my appointment, I called several times to confirm directions only to get the answering machine every time. Five minutes before my appointment, I received a call back from the doctor who informed me that I was in the wrong parking structure. A bit lost, I finally arrived in her office with my little girl 15 minutes late. I asked the doctor if she accepted my insurance. She told me that she does not accept any insurance plans, contrary to her website information. I was confused. Accustomed to receiving chiropractic treatment between 1-2 times per week, her fees were not within my budget. Remembering Dr. Alterman's 'Health on a Budget' option, I asked if there was anything she could do to help me out. She became agitated and told me that she was not in the habit of negotiating (I had tried reaching her office in advance to review payment options but no one answered my calls). Meanwhile, my little girl was playing with the toys that were in the office. The doctor became annoyed and suddenly ushered her off to a complete stranger in the waiting room asking the patient to 'take care of her'. I was appalled by her cold and harsh treatment. She became edgy and irritated as she proceeded to examine my spine with a fancy computer program that kept crashing. After reviewing the computer report, she stated that the exam was complete and that I could leave. I felt so uncomfortable. When I asked her about the treatment, in a huff, she told me that she had a patient who had been waiting for 30 minutes already and that there would be no treatment. I was shocked as she grew angry and said that she would not see me again. Wow! How this lady humiliated me was beyond belief. I just hoped that my little girl did not notice her caustic behavior. As she left the room to get her next patient, she passed right by me, ignoring me as if I wasn't there. I was mortified. She contradicted her website data when she told me that she does not accept insurance or provide relief. Never have I been so offended by a doctor. I hope for that others seek and find a compassionate doctor who truly cares for the needs of her patients. read more
