Veggie me, veggie you. Even after years and years, still one of my fave places when I need to meat decompress. It's a grocery store that has a hot food section with dining and ready to go prepared foods. They also sell banh mis but I heard they've changed a bit. They used to have a tofu and mushroom one that was so perfection. Big pieces of tofu and mushrooms marinated in this delicious sauce. Now I heard they use a tofu and mushroom loaf that is made in house. They also have noodle soups and Vietnamese dishes (com tam, vermicelli noodles, etc) but I go for the deli style lunch box. For $11.75 you get a choice of rice (I've seen brown and purple) or noodles (I always get the noods) plus 3 choices. And a small veggie soup. The lunch box options rotate, there are some items that they have more often. I always get their green beans and I try their various tofu options. Recently they had an eggplant stir fry and it was delicious. There is also an ala carte section that has dim sum items. I love their turnip cake (law bak go). One order comes with 3 pieces and a soy sauce and a chili oil ($5.50). The grocery store has expanded and sells pantry items (noodles, rice, sauces, snacks, etc) as well as fruits and veggies and frozen items (fake meat items). Came into the shop for some pick up to go meals. I got spring rolls, tofu rolls, and a vermicelli tofu bowl. All were good and I am excited to try the soup next! I also liked the bao buns. Service was good and the ambiance of the store was more so that it is a bustling place w what seems like a regular basis of customers. For a small grocery store, they have a lot of options to choose from to highlight your veg dishes if you choose to cook. Occasionally, I follow and watch some of my favorite vegan YouTube bloggers recommend certain items to add flavors or proteins to their meals to enhance the quality. Most of those items I spotted in San San Tofu. To name a few: veg bacon slices, drumsticks, fish, ham, mushroom seasonings, veg oyster sauce, veg rehydrated meats, veg fish sauce, and the list goes on. What, I enjoyed from here was the handmade veg meats spring rolls that they sell near the registers. The veg shredded beef with the peanut sauce has to be the best that I've ever tried. Most places strictly sell tofu spring rolls for the veg option or just veggies (which sucks since the effort isn't there), but not at San San Tofu, I love their creativity. I don't know about you, but I've found it hard to find an Asian restaurant that has stellar peanut sauce for spring rolls, but at San San Tofu, it was perfect. Not too much peanut flavor, not overly sweet, but just right. It isn't too thick or liquified. It's a happy medium in between. Not only that, but the spring rolls are fat in size and so flavorful! Even the veg meat has seasonings to it. I swear, I did not think that they would even marinate the veg meat, but they did. Most places would just add barely cooked or sauteed tofu to the rolls and the taste would be so off that you would have to add more sauces just to get that flavor consistency. The last time, I did purchase the veg bacon slices and I noticed that it is the same brand that Spiral Bakery (in the DFW area) uses. It was very simple to prepare. I just let the veg bacon thaw out in the sink for an hour (or shorter) Then, when I was ready to construct the BLT, I added it to the veg BBQ sauce that I bought as well from San San Tofu and placed it into a medium heat pan. It cooked it right up and it even gave off the crispiness of pork bacon minus all the fat of animal bacon. The drumsticks do look similar to the ones that Pythagoras vegan restaurant in Sugar Land has on the menu. This grocery store is pretty much a haven for me since I am a veg. The prices are significantly cheaper than Whole Foods and Sprouts. You can buy veg ham slices here which would last you a lot longer than what Target, Kroger, and HEB tofurky brand packs have. Instead of purchasing dehydrated veg meats from Amazon, you can pick them up at San San Tofu, they have a whole aisle dedicated to that. Oh, and let me mention this, they even sell veg jerky! In so many flavors, which is 100% more affordable than Bucees', any service station, and health food store combined. I wouldn't sleep on this place and I see why the parking lot is packed. I can't speak on the restaurant part since I did not frequent it. I was more intrigued with grocery selection. read more

Prices range - some things are cheap and some aren't (everything is made in house so some things get a pass for being high). My mom always gets the soy milk (unsweetened) at the Chinese grocery store so we decided to venture here to get it fresh from the source. There's a lot of good finds here. I have been to San San Tofu 山山豆腐 many times to pick up vegetarian groceries few years ago. Just recently, my friend Cathy wanted to show a group of people that vegan dim sum exists in Houston Chinatown. This is not a fancy restaurant nor with a full service. So, don't ask much, just look. As I walked in, grocery store was the first thing I see. Walk towards the left if their restaurant. Employees are very friendly. But not everyone speaks fluent English. So, be patient. One side of food warmer is for lunch box. Next one is the dim sum display. Further, the restaurant cashier is at the end of the line. You can order banh mi or noodles or anything from the menu that is not on display. Food has gone up due to inflation, this is nothing new across the country. So, the two-item and three-item lunch is really reasonable. I ordered some dim sum and asked for a knife to cut them for sharing. They gave me a pair of scissors instead. Three pieces of any type of Dim Sum is $5.50. All vegan. Don't complain there is not meat. Even though they have chicken and beef on the menu. I also ordered Bún bò Huế with vegetarian beef. Sigh... The "beef" is flavored textured soy protein slices. The display looks like the real thing. Vegan version of real thing actually tasted pretty good. Don't overthink what the real thing tastes like. If you want fresh vegan dim sum, best to come before noon. You'll get the real taste of San San Tofu. read more

Walking in I didn't realize this was also a grocery store and was happily surprised by all the vegetarian and vegan products! I ended up getting the combination house Banh Mi. It was stacked with filling. The daikon was the highlight of the sandwich, it was super sweet and crunchy. I do wish there were more greens in the sandwich. The meat dupes were not bad but did not remind me of meat at all. I thought the pate was kind of bland. Overall glad I tried the sandwich but I don't think I would get it again. My sister is also allergic to shellfish so it is one of the few places in bellaire she can eat because everything there is vegan! The combo plates are less than $13 and I always have leftover. Trying out new places means I've been eating a lot of meat recently, so when my husband asked where we should go for a 'lighter' lunch, San San Tofu was a great compromise. Non-meat options don't tend to fill him up, but I was pretty hungry - and we both left satisfied. San San's lunch specials haven't changed in price since late last year, so it's still around $10 for three items plus rice or noodles. Everything's served cafeteria-style, and the ladies dishing up the food were very nice even though we don't speak Vietnamese - you can just point to the food and they'll ladle a generous portion onto your plate. We both opted for the green beans and fried tofu, but I decided to get eggplant (seems to be a popular dish - there wasn't much left!) while he went for a vegan take on 'Shaking Beef'. After our entrees were plated, we just had to wait for someone to grab our soup and drinks from behind the counter, and we paid with cash. Both our entrees came with a bowl of what I'm pretty sure was a vegetarian Canh Chua - and while the husband wasn't a fan of its surprisingly sour taste, I found it was a great palate cleanser between the various oily dishes. The eggplant was especially great with a little of the chili oil from the table, and the tofu pieces were thick and hearty with a 'house made' quality, without being too greasy. Iced tea is also included with lunch if you dine in; ours was still pretty hot when we got it, the ice melted pretty much instantly, but all we had to do was ask nicely and we got an additional cup of ice. Refills don't seem to be offered, but the food is nicely seasoned and not too salty, so we didn't find ourselves needing one. Overall, it was pretty good. Cheap, all-vegetarian, and a good selection of hot dishes even on the weekends. Next time I'll probably come earlier to try the Dim Sum (at around 1 pm they were sold out of practically everything), and even my meat-loving husband is interested in the "chicken" noodle soup that's new on their menu. read more

I've had a ton of their products over the years since they distribute to some of the smaller Asian markets, but had never been to the actual store/restaurant. We ordered a lunch plate which came with noodles, 3 sides, a soup, and an iced tea for $10.25. They gave good portion sizes. We ordered 2 tofu dishes and an eggplant dish. They were better than what I was expecting! The dishes were flavorful without being overly salty. I was pleasantly surprised since I normally don't gravitate towards vegan choices, but they had a lot of options here! We also ordered some tofu pudding from the store with the ginger syrup which has been a fav of mine since I was a kid. It was SO good!!!! The best of the best for anyone who lives a chay (Buddhism vegetarian) lifestyle. Went to many other places and no where compares. The ladies here are friendly (on the second register where you can dine in to eat). Lunch time has rice combo with 3 different side options. I tried them all and they're all flavorful and my mother approves... I repeat, my mom approved! She's one of the pickiest chay person I know and usually only eat home cooked meals, unless at a temple. Prices are cheap for the quantity and quality of food you're getting. Don't expect to come to a fancy place. It's half a market and half fast food chay restaurant. Ambience is laid back with monks-music chanting like I'm in a Vietnamese Buddhism temple. Plenty of parking spaces (for now). Procedure for you newbies: The first register you see when you open the door is more for grab and go plus the market. The second register far on the left is where you order your food. If you order a rice or noodle plate or chay dim sum food, you let one of the ladies behind the counter what you want and you get to either dine in or take out, plus complimentary tea (hot/cold) and small soup of the day. If you order something like bun rieu chay, then you tell the lady at the register and she will give you a food tray with your drinks and number. When the food is done, they will bring it out to you. Done eating all the delicious food? Simply bring the food tray to the beginning counter on the dine-in side so they can put it away. Taday! This place is inside a grocery store or probably this restaurant has a grocery store too. We went on Lunar New Year and probably that's why it was really busy. Their entire menu is vegetarian. Food is really cheap and has combos like Panda Express. Some of the staff was really helpful whereas some clearly were very annoyed and frustrated. It could be stress from a lot of customers but not sure if that should happen in customer facing roles. We took 2 combos of 3 entrees with noodles and a couple of dimsum items. If you ask the staff what is good or what's there in a specific food item, the staff was quoted saying- "I told you everything is good, it's all vegetarian it doesn't matter what's in it". In both our combos there was at least one entree that we didn't pick and the server just put by her own choice. The food tasted nice, I would rate it 3.5/5 but it was a bit cold, could have been 4/5 if it was hot. Also because of the take it or leave service attitude, I believe this place will be on my go-to list more likely if someday I'm feeling lazy to pick what I want and someone just puts thing randomly on my plate. read more

Not everyone is a huge fan of vegetarian food but if you are this is the place to go! I personally have only been inside once, but I've had take out over 100 times. My favorites are the lemongrass tofu, combo rice boxes, sticky rice in banana leaf, and even the porridge. The purple color of the porridge is a little off putting and different. However, it's from the purple rice and better than white rice porridge in my opinion. Don't forget to grab some veggie egg rolls and turnip cake as an appetizer! San San is a one stop shop for vegetarians. The other half of the restaurant is a grocery store. We stumble upon this place while driving around our Airbnb. This place opens early which was great because it was too early for us to go eat lunch so we shopped around the store. They have a huge selection of vegan food to eat and cook! We don't have a large variety of vegan food back in Chicago so this was great! We bought some vegan jerky and other vegan food for cooking. What a great find this turned out to be! An all vegetarian Asian restaurant, thanks yelp! The first time we visited, it was almost closing time and we got a couple of things to go like sesame balls, pumpkin bun and sticky rice with beans wrapped in banana leaf. Everything tasted so fresh and clean that we definitely wanted to come back for lunch. Sure enough, we did manage to visit again before leaving Houston. For lunch we chose to go with lunch combo special which let us choose from an array of pre-made items. The combo also comes with a soup and tea, all for less than $7 per plate. None of the dishes were named, so we just pointed to what we wanted. Am not a huge fan of imitation meat so I stuck to dishes with vegetables and tofu but my husband chose ones with imitation meat as well. They also had various kinds of dumplings and I got carried away seeing SO many things which I never had a chance to try and ordered a lot. They also had these pre-packed snacks and we got some of those as well. I felt like a kid in a candy store, seeing all these snacks which I had only seen on food vlogs before. Varieties of rice wrapped in different leaves, sticky rice stuffed with banana and served with coconut milk and sesame(which was absolutely delicious!!) warm tofu pudding with ginger sauce(that sauce was heavenly) Everything was very fresh and tasty, inexpensive as well! I think they started out as tofu makers so they make their own tofu. They also have vegetarian grocery items. The staff was friendly but not too fluent in English. I've been going here a lot lately for my vegetarian "diet" needs. It's an ALL vegetarian market with a sit down "fast-food" area on the other side (in the same building). Most of the time I come here to grab vegetarian fast food meals because I'm always on the run. When I have some time to spare, I sit down for their soups like Bun Rieu or Bun Mam (the smell is real lol). You'll have to order at the line with one of the friendly ladies first. Food will be brought out to you if they need to make it in the kitchen. The soups are very hearty and flavorful. Siu mai tastes pretty darn close to the real thing. Eggrolls are nice and crispy. If you're wanting dim sum, late morning/early lunch hours are the best time to get them. There's one thing I don't like here and it's the tea they serve. It's too floral with a perfume after taste. At the main front counter, you can get fresh tofu pudding, fried tofu, and fresh tofu--individual or wholesale quantities. There's also daily packaged goods like vegetarian stir fry noodles, fresh rolls, steamed buns, and other snack varieties. The market side area will have almost everything you need to whip up a vegetarian meal. I say "almost" because they don't have fresh produce (vegetables, fruit, etc.). It's probably cheaper and more convenient to buy your cooked meals there! The Buddhist chanting is always playing over the speakers and it makes me feel like I'm in a temple meditating! read more

They sell cooked, fried, and raw Tofus so you can buy according to your needs. Their soups and deserts are also good. They also sell the "mushroom and vegetables seasoning" which is the vegetarian version of chicken or beef bouillon. It's a big bag for $10-12 depending on whether it's made in Taiwan or Japan.
