As I begin to tire of home cooking, my mind started telling me that it craves gyro! Looking online, there seemed to be a few decent spots to choose from, but I settled on Choban Grill. Going in, there wasn't a wait when I got in, but customers started flooding then after. There also was a good amount of seating available inside. Tonight I settled on ordering the gyro platter! Although, kinda pricey ($16), this meal was clearly enough for 2-3 people and packed with flavor! The plate included everything that you can ask for, from tender cooked rice (I got the brown which was very fluffy), black beans or chickpeas, greek salad, stuffed grape leaves, hot pita, gyro, taboleh salad, hummus, tazikki sauce, and house hot sauce (boy that's a mouthful - literally)! I really can't complain as everything was super fresh. I really liked the herbiness of the taboleh salad and the addition of cucumbers, hummus was very creamy, salad possessed freshness (did not taste like bagged greens), gyro was well seasoned/tender, tazikki tasted super homemade (can taste the greek yogurt and shredded cucumber), etc. Moreover, there was this woman working all by herself in the front, and although super busy, she was super friendly to chat with me and prepare my meal promptly. Met the owner today as lunch was a little past the lunch rush. Friendly and accommodating, I love the gyros here. I've had both the lamb and the chicken and both always hit the spot. Asked for the fries to be a little crispy (as they are cooked to order) and owner was more than happy to do it. Seasoned with paprika, cumin, and salt they are really good fries. The lamb Gyro all the way is loaded with shaved meat, lettuce, tomato, onion, feta, and tzatzki sauce. As a potential customer walked in, Mohtisham offered a sample of the lamb without hesitation. For less than $10, you get a Gyro, fries, and a drink. A certain burger food truck could learn a lesson here. Awesome, super cool, local Greek place! I was looking for something different than the normal lunch stuff and close to my work and decided to check this place out! Located on Phillips hwy north of the Avenues mall in a typical small strip plaza. Plenty of parking the couple of times I've been there and I'm talking about high noon. Small cozy atmosphere inside with high top tables along the wall and regular tables in the main dining room. Looks like there's additional seating in the back beyond the grill/front counter. The young lady that took my order as well as cooked it was super friendly. I looked over the menu on the wall and had to try the Gyro (pronounced Yero) as she corrected me. She warmed up the pita on a flat iron then proceeded to shave off a mountain of meet before adding the toppings. She asked if I wanted the usual which is lettuce, tomato, onion and taziki sauce which I was good with. I also had her throw on a few black olives before wrapping it up. Make it a combo with choice of salad or fries, I went fries and add your choice of fountain drink or canned soda. I couldn't get to my seat fast enough to dig into this baby. The flavors all melded together perfectly and the heaping pile of meat was seasoned and cooked to perfection. I enjoyed as much of it as I could but had to take 1/2 of it home for later. WOW, what can I say about Choban Grill other than "WOW". We (hubby and I) saw Choban Grill when we were in the area for our hair appointment and decided to give it a try with a friend. What a pleasant surprise. Upon walking in, Sarah (spelling?) greeted us warmly. We were still waiting on our friend to arrive, but in the meantime, she explained the food to us. You can tell she is so passionate about making delicious fresh food and proud of them. And rightfully so. First of all, we were both excited to see two types of meats roasting on vertical spit, looking so delicious. Then she explained their buffet dishes as well. We were very torn about whether to get a gyro (main reason we stopped in) or the buffet (everything looked so yummy and fresh). We ended up ordering the gyros with fries because we just have our mind set on gyro and neither of us was willing to give that up to order the buffet so we can share (half gyro, stealing bites from the buffet). LOL... yeah that was sad. Sarah probably saw our mental and whispering debate and took pity on us because after we ordered our food, she gave us a small sampling plate composed of a few dishes to try from the buffet. So there are 3 Choban Grill in Jax.... I was confused are they all owned by same person? A chain? I was told the one in Riverside and off Southside Blvd same owner, this one off Phillips different owner....this explains why they are similar but not exactly the same...the prices are different and even what's on the menu is a little different. This one still has gyros, lamb or chicken with all the fixings, they have combo meals with a side or fries and a drink for about $9 ....they were yummy and huge! I was sad they didn't have the lemon orzo soup that I had at the Riverside store but it's ok I was stuffed from the gyro! Good lunch spot, get stuffed for under 10 bucks! I seriously love this place. Greek food is my favorite cuisine, and I'm very picky about getting it right! I dropped my car off for service and was in a time crunch while picking it up during lunch. I called this place to order for pickup, and by the time I got there, it was halfway ready already! The people are super friendly and nice, and the food is always consistently good. If I could give more than five stars, I would! I never leave reviews but the past two experiences I've had at this place, exceeded my expectations by far. It seems to be run by a very authentic Greek Family and it's obvious when you eat anything from there. They are extremely hospitable, we ordered our food close to closing time, and the very friendly woman gave Extra pita bread and tzatziki sauce, as well as some baklava since They were about to close. The first time we went there we had the same friendly woman, who even offered us a taste of the lamb and weighed our food in front of us. The lamb was dry... it tasted more like frozen lamb instead of how it usually is hot and juicy. It was warm at best. The bread and fixings were good but the meat was dry and chewy. My salad was lettuce with one chunk of tomato and she asked if I wanted dressing. No feta, no olives, no cucumber... lettuce and one bite of tomato. I questioned her as to why I got a garden salad instead of Greek salad and she said,"That IS a Greek salad. Did you want tabouli instead?" No, but if I just wanted lettuce I'd have asked for lettuce. The bathroom was clean but the front table needed to be swept around as there was a dried up dead lizard on the floor underneath. I'd give them a 3.5. The lamb gyro was very flavorful and they gave a heaping amount of meat. Very similar to a Chicago gyro that I've been looking for in the south but a little less intense of meat flavoring. The tzatziki sauce was the perfect consistency but needed a little more garlic and dill, the English cucumber is always missing when getting it at other places but they used it here which was great. The pita is where it could use some improvements. If they were homemade or even just thrown on the grill on each side, it would elevate the gyro because it was just a prepackaged one from the store. Not heated or anything and a little thick, it soaked up the sauce because it was dry. The fries were crispy and hot, had the crunchy coating and seasoning salt. I'm not a fan of seasoning salt but it wasn't overpowering. Not a bad price for a gyro combo but the drink was mostly ice. Very friendly and definitely authentic. $26 for 2 gyro combos. read more

It comes with a choice of side, in my case, choban salad, and a medium fountain drink. I noticed it does get busy during lunchtime, so maybe call ahead or have it delivered. The lamb meat was delicious and perfectly flavored and spiced. The choban salad was okay, but maybe I would go with a different salad next time. Also, I would suggest asking them to put the tzatziki sauce in the gyro instead of dolloping it on the end of the gyro to spread it out instead of biting into a huge pile of tzatziki. read more
