I came across Chocolat Ilene boutique on a Montmartre Walking tour. The fact that the walking guide (a longtime French chef) recommended her shop speaks highly of the chocolates. A Korean woman is the chocolatier and she is obviously skilled at chocolate artistic sculpture for festive events. But it is her fine chocolates that dominate the candy case - which catch my eyes. I find an Asian sensibility pleasing in the variety of filling/flavor choices. After having several samples of chocolates and a house made macaron, I bought an assorted chocolate box. Yum! The boutique itself is like a small candy box filled with treats - nice ambiance. With the lab in the back, the chocolates are as fresh as can be. On a walking food tour of the Montmarte area, we had the opportunity to stop in and try the delicious macarons and chocolates that are so thoughtfully crafted here. I loved getting to support a small local business and hearing the history of the sisters who opened the shop. The macarons that we tried here were hands-down the best that we ate during our trip to Paris and the chocolate was top-notch. Picked up a medium box of assorted chocolates to take back to the US. At 35€, it wasn't exactly cheap, but considering there are about 30 pieces of ultra high quality goodness, I had no regrets. Also grabbed a vanilla macaroon and a single morsel of milk chocolate mousse for the road. So glad I got the macaroon! Totally agree with the other reviews... No doubt there's incredible chocolatiers in Paris, but I'm drawn to how their pure chocolate tastes along with interesting truffle flavors that set them apart. scoured through yelp for a place that fits my taste - you should do the same and find the right one for you. Yuzu, wasabi, nougat pistachio, and the must - their pure ganache is honestly a piece of heaven. Flavors bloom and textures melt into my brain, it's like nothing else I've ever had. She was so informative and explained how they care for the flavors, that even when they were initially putting the variety boxes together, a lot of thought was put into what represents them the most. No exaggeration: the best macarons in Paris. They look different from the standard macarons, but that's a plus. The outer shell isn't crunchy, it's soft, so the texture is more uniform -- I like it better this way. They're also more interesting. For example, the strawberry flavor had bits of real strawberries! And the lemon had chocolate inside. I tried the green tea flavor and it was rich and strong. I like that the flavors are things that actually sound tasty, and not chosen to seem cool and avant garde. My fiancé and I went to Chocolate Illene after visiting Montmarte and it was a great decision. We got 6 macarons (chocolate, vanilla, raspberry, lime, caramel, and another berry flavored one) that were all delicious. My favorite was the raspberry. I also bought some chocolates as souvenirs for my family. The owner was very nice and gave me and my fiancé a few samples of chocolate which was a very kind gesture. Chocolat Illèné is probably not the bakery that you've heard of and have plans to go out of your way for, but please do as this was the best macaroon I had in Paris!!! You can easily tell that this was not a macaroon that was shipped in frozen, as many patisseries in Paris might fool you and do that. It was homemade and had the perfect texture and taste.
