Yesterday, I purchased some chocolates from Golden Eye. This is the first of several treats I have planned for him. Unfortunately, Golden Eye Chocolates will be closing in about a month, so purchase some chocolates before they close down. Golden Eye is named after the golden eye flower (perennial flower with a sunflowerish look). I tried one of their samples...so smooth and creamy unlike any traditional chocolate I have ever tasted. So, I bought six chocolates. They are a little pricey at $20 given their small size, however, a nice Father's day treat. This chocolate is quite unique with flavors like matcha latte, malted grackle, blood and honey and spiced chai. Also, the owner uses items that are unique to Austin such as the golden eye flower, chocolate sunflower and fruit bats. I also like that some of the chocolate is sourced from Venezuela, Tanzania, Costa Rica and Dominican Republic (DR). I tasted DR chocolate for the first time in November when on a cruise and it was absolutely delicious. In addition to selling chocolate pieces, they sell candy bars and coffee. Service was excellent. I learned the chocolates are made in south Austin and transported to the north location. In addition, I learned the owner is a pro nature and that's why she chose the name golden eye after the flower. The shop is small with no seating indoor or outdoor. It was sooo last minute and during the holidays so I was very nervous about finding a quality cake. After searching the internet and reading reviews, I reached out to Alba. She promptly emailed me back and asked for photos of what I wanted. What I originally sent her was incredibly ornate. She politely let me know that because of the holidays, she wouldn't be able to do exactly what I sent but she was confident she could make me something I was pleased with. I didn't have time or options so I agreed and paid up. Pick up was super easy as Alba is a fantastic communicator. The cake was beautifully boxed and easy to transport. She was reasonably priced for the level of detail and size of cake. After receiving and tasting the cake, I think she could be charging more. Once we unboxed the cake, we were all AMAZED! It turned out so cute and though it wasn't the level of detail I originally asked for, she exceeded the expectations that she set! I will absolutely be using Alba for all of my decorative cake needs.

Last year, the 1st time we used Michelle, we gave her an idea we had and she just ran with it - she ended up making a beautiful white cake with strawberry filling that had the 1st 6 music notes to Happy Birthday to You across the top with a little 3-D gum paste figure of Nakia singing into a microphone. I posted pictures of the 1st cake he got from me and my bestie Susan that he was so totally blown away with. (He still has the gum paste likeness in his freezer.) This year I sent her a picture of his new fan-financed CD, Drowning In The Crimson Tide, and had asked her to incorporate the CD cover onto the cake. She kept me abreast of what she was doing and when she delivered the cake at The Saxon Pub, it was nothing short of AMAZING!!! She made a cake with a bottom ring on top of a mirror with a "crimson tide" going around the sides with a top tier that she painted to look like Nakia's CD cover. And to top it all off, the top tier of the cake rotated! she totally outdid herself with this over-the-top cake and Nakia really LOVED it. I told her that she can expect an order for a cake for his birthday every year from now on. I have also received birthday cakes made by Michelle for my last 3 birthdays - the 1st one was of a 2-D white baby tiger, the 2nd one was of Hello Kitty's head and this last one was of a red, white and blue Japanese dragon in honor of my Ameerican and Japanese heritage. Even the eyes were of my eye color (hazel) and the detail was totally outstanding! I have had nothing but wonderful cakes made by Michelle. It is such a relief to have a bakery we can use for quality, attractive cakes at a very reasonable price. For our wedding, we wanted things very simple and that is again what we wanted for our baby shower. Lavish Cakes honored our wishes without any attempt to talk us into a 6-tier fondant covered monstrosity. Of course if that is what you want, I am sure they could make a gorgeous cake for you! We have found that a lot of bakeries don't want to work with folks who want simple, good cakes but that is not the case with Lavish Cakes & Catering. They are professional and high-quality.
