I heard this Sunday was their debut at the Brooklyn Flea in DUMBO. While I didn't come solely for fish tacos, I did make a quick stop over at their food stall while I was here and quite glad that I did. A nice piece of freshly fried fish, wrapped loosely in a comforting taco with a generous sprinkling of herbs, red cabbage, red onions, guacamole and drizzled with crema. You hit it with a splash of lime juice and a few flicks of their hot salsa and you've got yourself a nice little snack that's hard to stop at just one. They serve it with or without guacamole, which they call the Green. I'm a friend of guacamole so I had to go with that. I don't think this is quite a destination Taco just yet, but it's worth a try if you happen to be here anyway. It's a nice little addition to the food options here. Kinda surprised at the average rating of Choncho's. We ordered their Fish Taco and it definitely ranks Top 3 of ALL fish tacos we have ever had. The toppings are fresh, fish was deep-fried to perfection and the soft taco shell was delicious. At $5 for one ($8 for 2 I believe), it is pricier than what you'd get from Taco Bell, but the quality is high so it definitely gets my vote. read more

I ordered their baja asada (grilled fish) and toro fuego (braised beef) this past weekend at the Brooklyn flea. The baja asada was made with salmon... I don't think salmon should be used to make tacos (even though I love salmon). The braised beef was braised alright but the onions overpowered everything. Pretty disappointed with these bland tacos as a whole. My friend tried their baja classic - beer battered cod and enjoyed it so maybe they're known for those. Seems like they're still new so hopefully they can fix the kinks especially the uninviting fishy smell that I noticed after I left the stand. Found this taco stand at the Brooklyn Flea and while there are other taco stands around that take a unique spin on the taco, Choncho's tacos are back to the basics. My friend and I both ordered the Baja Classico tacos, and while I wasn't happy with the taco falling apart the fresh ingredients were the highlight of the experience. I tried Choncho's Fish Tacos at the Saturday Brooklyn Flea in Fort Greene this past weekend. Too bad, you only have the option to have them Fried in Beer Batter. You can't have the Mahi Mahi grilled. The fish tacos were decent, but no where as good as what you'll find in San Diego. read more

Meh, I feel like the tacos here weren't really worth the stomach space, especially considering all the other good food around at Brooklyn Flea. And they're not cheap! Grab yourself a lobster roll or food from the Red Hook stands instead! read more

We had an awful experience with Choncho's stand at Rumsey Playfield for the Ray LaMontagne show on May 31st. It was partially the fault of Bowery Presents who was running the show, I suppose. There were only three food vendors (Choncho, Moto Pizza and Asiadog) for thousands of folks. So perhaps there was too much demand and not enough supply. That said... It started with my lady & I deciding between pizza, hot dogs and tacos. Tacos won and we unsuspectingly joined the line for Choncho. At first the line seemed expectedly slow for a crowded event. However, this turned into a 45 minute wait to just place our order. As we approached the front of the line, we saw another line forming adjacent to the cashier. This, we found out, was where you waited for your food after you placed your order. This turned into ANOTHER 45 minute wait! 90 minutes for poorly constructed and executed tacos. We could have driven to Los Hermanos in Bushwick and back in that amount of time. Many people, frustrated with the absurd wait, asked for their money back, which we would have done if we weren't so damn hungry. This is why you don't let hipsters run food stands and why I'm frankly okay with Aramark doing their assembly line thing at larger events. The staff must have been stoned. They were cooking grilled corn two at a time! One girl spent a full 30 seconds applying cabbage to two tacos. We counted a full five minutes between orders being delivered. It was some of the worst and slowest service I've ever received. When we finally got our order, it wasn't complete. We only got our tacos and had to wait another five minutes for cold corn and I got attitude from the cabbage girl who served up our order. We missed Ray's first song and had to gobble down our food so we could enjoy the rest of show. Overall, it was an astonishingly amateur operation that ended up tainting our otherwise pleasant summer concert experience. About the food: Grilled Mahi taco - Bland in flavor, too dry. Carnitas (pork) taco- Decently moist, but lacking in flavor. Onions were cut into huge, unappetizing chunks. PortaBlano taco - Best of the three taco flavors we tried. It actually had some flavor, but was served cold. Elote (Mexican corn on the cob) - Under-cooked with hardly any mayo or cheese. Also served cold.. On top of everything else, they ran out of hot sauce. In summation: Boycott. These fools do not deserve anyone's business. They have no sense of customer service and should be ashamed of even thinking they could run a business. They have thousands of miles to go before they get their sh*t together. read more

Tried these guys at the Smorgasbord this weekend and aside from being expensive, I'm really not sure why they have such awful reviews! I had the Baja Classico taco which was fried tilapia with cabbage, cilantro, lime and some white sauce. It was delicious! The fish was fried perfectly: nice and crunchy on the inside and tender and moist on the inside; you could actually taste the batter! I waited about 15 mins for it and like I said, I don't know why people are giving bad reviews. The line was long so I knew there would be a wait and the food was good. read more

Had them yesterday at the Smorgasburg. From the line and the wait, you'd think there are no other fish taco stands in NY. I got the grilled and the beer battered, and both were bland, took about 45 minutes, and I had to watch the cabbage girl text and chat on her cell phone between each order. In her texting flurry, she managed to drop the receipts on the graveled floor, then proceeded to pick those up with her gloved hands, and resume cabbaging the tacos, never thinking to, oh I don't know, change her gloves. When one customer complained that he had been waiting for over an hour, one of the girls shouted back that these were made to order. Made to order or not, these fish tacos were so tasteless that the gravel may have had more flavor. Pass. read more

I had the Marco Pollo taco today and pretty sure it was the best taco I've ever had. I went back for another it was so good.

Ran in to these guys serving up fish tacos at a Sunday Best party. The ingredients were top notch, Forrest (the owner) could not have been more friendly, the taco was great. I'm certainly planning on taking a trip down to the Loading Dock at some point. read more

as far as the ratings go I would concur that "I'm a fan"...kudos for using mahi-mahi...most places around here use a lot of different fish for tacos including *vomit* tilapia, but mahi-mahi is much appreciated... solid fish taco - corn tortilla, purple cabbage, crema, salsa, battered fish. $5 each, $9 for two. previous poster said "insanely expensive". i disagree. mexifusion restaurants in manhattan will charge you $15 to $20 for two with a random side, if even. i would be full on two chonchos so $9 is fine for a meal. if you're reading this choncho i wouldn't mind seeing a large $10 fish burrito!!! read more
