We came here to see the legendary Mark Kramer and Pan American for an evening of ambient guitar-centric music with films playing as a backdrop. We had dinner first and had the Smashed in Paradise burger and some steaks. The food and service were very good and the price was reasonable for what you got. The beer list was good but not huge; no problem - they had what we wanted! The music venue was very large and had great sound. Folding chairs were set up as the music was meant to be experienced with the projected films. I appreciated the open space at the restaurant and venue. Easy to move around and no claustrophobia!! Came here with my fiancee to see her friend's son play in the Led Zeppelin cover band. On an afternoon where all the kids are playing, this is a busy place. There's a long bar area in the front, and the stage is through the doors in the back. I had a rum and coke, people watched, and enjoyed the music. It's a clean place but gets crowded quickly. The bar staff seemed overwhelmed. It was crowded in the back, and people kept walking by trying to steal our table or leaving their trash on our table. The staff used sandbags to prop the doors open so people kept tripping as they came in and out. It was an alright place and experience. Especially the dry aged steak... one of the best steaks I've ever had. When we went this week, I got the the filet mignon. Beware the menus aren't consistent. What was online was different than the QR code but we asked and could still have the filet. It was on the rare side for medium rare but very tender cut. The broccoli was good but a little sparse. My husband tried the special burger and enjoyed it. He liked their fries a lot. For starters we had the oysters and wings. The oysters were good. Summary: I would NEVER return to this establishment. Staff are ridiculously unprofessional and we felt unsafe. Security is a joke. They were completely incompetent and not properly trained at all. Zero conflict resolution skills. My friend went to get help from security because an absolutely belligerent drunk lady (who was CLEARLY over-served alcohol) was causing a problem, screaming in our faces and shoving people out of the way to the front of the crowd. Instead of kicking her out after hearing EIGHT different people say she was verbally abusing the people around her - they removed all of us from the second floor and told us to go to the lobby area. They separated all of us and we stood there for a while. I asked a security member what was happening? Why are we just sitting here? He stated he "didn't know" and needed to "ask his coworker". Spent just $35 to watch Mucca Pazza on NYE and it was one of the best concert going experiences in years. The space is clean, open, well-ventilated, with high ceilings and great acoustics. Space for a merch table. Could pop in and out to the bar if needed. I was just there to see the show so I didn't eat or drink anything, but they did offer food before the show and the menu looked great. Staff: SUPER NICE! This was NYE and they were dealing with a lot of sauced up customers by 1 AM when I left, and were very kind and patient with everyone and especially nice and welcoming to me as I arrived and left. The starter was the size of a compact mirror. The entree was a single, meager chicken thigh. The dessert was a slice of angel food cake but was shared between each table. So it really depends on the artist that you're seeing. Both first and second time around proved that it was the venue's noise volume/levels that are off. Way too loud each time and out of tune in spurts. Although it was decent, a few gripes to let out. Minimum of 25.00 to use your card for drinks requiring you to open a tab. There was a long heavy line in the cold that they did not let us in until half an hour before showtime. The line was extensively long as well in a sketchy neighborhood. We got called several times by randoms asking what we were all waiting in line for...*heavy sigh* This time no one was allowed upstairs to eat a meal before the show. We came here Wednesday evening for happy hour - which means Oysters! For February, they had a special deal - a bottle of Michael Lavelle rosé with a dozen oysters for $35. Given that a dozen oysters was $27, this special was definitely worth it. The oysters were nice - not the best I've tasted but they had a delicate and light flavor and were served with horseradish with cocktail sauce, or vinaigrette with shallots. Nothing tasted spoiled. For happy hour, we also ordered a few of the appetizers - cauliflower bites and also wings. These were marinated in Siracha chili, and honey sesame. Both sauces had a good taste and provided a good amount of moisture to the fried plates. We also ordered a cheese plate, which was nothing to brag about - it had Swiss, cheddar, and bleu cheese, along with some chicken liver pate and a few cold cuts of meats. In contrast to a lot of the other reviews I've seen, service was quick and they were extremely polite and accommodating. That being said, there were about 4 tables seated and the rest of the place was empty - perks of coming on a weekday night I guess. Had tickets to a show and came here for dinner before. It was perfect logistics. Really convenient. Had the choice of sitting inside or outside and chose to dine on the patio. Interesting murals and comfortable, casual tables. We waited a really long time for service, but as I implore others to do, understand there is a serious staff shortage everywhere, remain patient and understanding. Once our server came by, she was very sweet and apologetic. They didn't have a cider on tap, my personal favorite, so I started with a very spicy, but very yummy spicy Margarita. After that, I switched to a canned cider option. It was okay. We had the burrata wrapped in prosciutto. Hated this dish! I would almost suggest that they remove it from the menu. I don't want to make a flippant comment without constructive feedback, so allow me to explain and also preface this by saying that this is clearly based on my personal experience and expectations. I eat burrata very often and have always seen it presented as a pillowy ball or small pulls of it on a pizza so I envisioned that but just with a blanket of prosciutto. Instead, it was 4 rolls of prosciutto with burrata spread in the middle. Without a photo as a visual aid, I'd say it was comparable to a salami/cream cheese roll up made famous in the 1980s potluck party scene, if you were lucky, there was a pickle in the middle...okay, sorry getting back on track. I'm in no way complaining that it was too much prosciutto, but the overall dish just made no sense. It was like eating a huge piece of lunch meat with a fork and knife. There could have been bread or more burrata. The cheese to meat ratio was very off. I cut away the prosciutto entirely to be able to taste the burrata, it was incredibly overpowering and I do love me some prosciutto, but this was an incredibly disappointing $16 appetizer. It's almost a bad look. I wish it didn't taint the rest of my experience because we both enjoyed our burgers, albeit smaller in size than what I'm used to, but quality ingredients and well cooked. I had the smash burger. Thumbs up for sure. My husband had the Royal burger and it was also pretty stellar. I upgraded from fries to elotes and glad I did. The elotes were fire. We both declared it our favorite dish of the evening. Overall, we had a solid experience, but my takeaways are to avoid the prosciutto wrapped burrata, get the elotes and plan accordingly because we both felt like either portions were a little small or we need to evaluate our appetites, but we both felt like we were still a little hungry. read more

Staff and security were very unpleasant and rude. My friend had went to use the bathroom and I had to hold her drink which she had just purchased and did not want to bring into the stall (she is 21, I am 20), she was in there not even 5 minutes when someone from security very rudely started interrogating me about the drink I was holding (it was completely full, not even a sip had been taken out of it so i was confused as to why the security became so hostile over a drink that hadn't even been touched) I explained it was my friends in the bathroom and she came out and took the drink back, proving further that it was my friends drink, security continued to be very rude towards us and told us to "never let it happen again". I guess this venue does not care about the safety of their customers and would rather have their drinks sitting out in the open to be tampered with than having someone hold it for a few minutes. After this encounter the security was rude to us and basically followed us the whole night, It made the rest of the night uncomfortable and ruined our night so we ended up leaving early. The whole night it seemed as if everyone was in a horrible mood and taking that out on all the customers, worst service I've ever experienced. When a friend organized brunch here, I checked out the menu and my immediate reaction was "interesting." The menu is very savory and lunch forward. It's more or less the regular menu plus some egg dishes. If you're someone who usually enjoys pancakes, waffles, or other sweet items you will be disappointed. We sat upstairs on the patio, it was a bit confusing as there was a drag brunch going on the first floor. The space is quite big, I'd been there once before for an event. We liked that it wasn't overly crowded, if I had to guess the brunch menu might be a factor although possibly that it was Lolla weekend. That said, they do have bottomless mimosas. The food was ok. Many of the folks got the lobster benedict which was skimpy on lobster. One had to be sent back because there was literally none. Being a pescatarian egg hater, I went with the avocado toast and the patio crusher drink. The drink was great, the avocado toast was fine. In terms of value, this dish doesn't live up to the price. $16 one size slice of rye with a thin schmear of avocado (likely no more than 1/3 of an avocado). The tomato on top was too big, it was a plum tomato cut into 4 pieces which was awkward to eat. The potatoes on the side were fine, but they needed to cut the potatoes into smaller pieces. They were about the size of the tomatoes and seemed double fried; they were ok just awkward to eat. Overall, I enjoyed the company and lack of a crowd more than the food. read more

This place is super cute and a unique dinner spot to check out. Most weekend nights this spot turns into a concert venue- so the later you go the louder it will get. But loved the unique restaurant- concert vibe. We got delicious drinks with a unique twist- I got the Manhattan with a delicious cherry vanilla simple syrup. It was strong, and worth a try if you like the taste of cherry. Our food: we kept it pretty simple and it was good! My husband got the smash burger with fries and he really enjoyed his meal. ***This is for the event space only*** Came here to check out one of Sofar's events as my brother's band, Ludlow, was 1 of 3 bands featured that night. The venue space is located towards the rear of Chop Shop, to the right of the bar. I thought it was a great open space venue. Sofar, the company that put together the concert, emphasizes the ambiance of intimacy. For example, the musicians didnt perform on the stage as they were level with the audience. The only thing separating them from the audience were a string of lights laid out on the floor, encircling the musicians. There were no chairs to sit on, so it was standing room only. However, the majority of the audience sat on the floor and jammed to the tunes. I thought the venue gave a nice modern vibe and it was large enough to either host a party with tables and chairs, or small enough for an intimate concert. The bar was right outside the venue doors so that was easy access whenever you got thirsty. There were also a set of staircases to the left and right of the stage which i believe led to a balcony? Anywho, coming here for the concert gives me ideas for hosting some type of other event here. Will definitely keep Chop Shop's event space in mind for future parties/events. read more

Tremendous potential - total train wreck. It started off with a bad beginning and then just did not get any better. Our group of 3 had a reservation for 6:30 and when we arrived the hostess took us upstairs - downstairs looked like it had plenty of room, but oh well... we were seated and immediately noticed the loud, blaring obnoxious music being played over the p a system. Not a good start. Then we looked to the right and noticed a sign that the majority of the upstairs was reserved for an engagement party, which started a short while later with a lot of people - more standing then sitting....would really have liked to have been seated away from that event. One person in our party attempted to order the rib eye, but they were out - Saturday night at 630pm. We all three ordered the filet - medium rare. The chef apparently does not know steak temps, 2 medium to medium well and one borderline medium rare/medium. No one ever checked back once the steaks were delivered, but thankfully we were able to get the servers attention to get us a steak knife - she apologized big time, but it was just par for the course. Star of the night were the $1 oysters from Delaware. Decent taste and size. Drinks were average. Wine selection was poor - not too many selections when asked the server replied that they do not serve much wine. My dining companions said on previous visits things were much better, but we all agreed tonight was a bust. read more

Occurred Saturday 4/15/2023 Charged my card with another tab of someone of the same name, gave my card away to that other patron, then proceeded to belittle me until kicking me out before resolving the issue. I just wanted a clear resolution before leaving and you kicked me out without actually solving it so now I am going to escalate this. You can't just treat patrons like trash for no reason, especially when you're the one that screwed up, you lost my card and screwed up my bill (I see two charges one for $20 and another for $19) - I got a G+T and one beer should be only ~$20 but I have no idea since I never got to look at the bill with the manager - and tried to have me close out a bill on someone else's card and I said no. Own up to your mistakes, apologize and problem solve. Children throw tantrums and make excuses without solving issues, you said I was the only person with that name there that night which we all know is untrue since you were trying to get me close out with the other credit card that said "Ian M Henderson" which is not me. I wasn't even mad throughout the entire exchange, it was an honest mistake, you were immediately being hostile towards me when you knew you screwed up. Mistakes happen and it's frustrating, I get it, I was even willing to figure out which bill was mine and pay for it but you weren't being clear about how you were resolving the issue and just got mad at me. Then kicked me out saying you were just going to leave the charges on my card instead of looking over the bill with me and figuring out what should have been charged to my card that you lost or stole. So not only did you give away my CC to the wrong "Ian Henderson", you admitted that you were just going to overcharge me which is also known as stealing. You wanted me to close someone else's card/bill which is fraud, you stole/lost my credit card, and you overcharged my card. Then you kick me out. Wild. I come here often so this experience really ticked me off. I'm never rude to staff and I always tip but then you lost my credit card and treat me like garbage so it is highly unlikely I will ever go to a show here again. I will also encourage other people not to go to your establishment since there is a chance you will have your credit card taken from you and then kicked out. Venue wise: I love this venue, I came here to see the Dip and it is truly a unique and beautiful space. I would definitely recommend seeing a show here, there are plenty of options for you to sit in the front of the bar and hear the music (through the speakers), be in the main crowd, be off to the side, be in the middle bar, or be upstairs on the balcony where I was (short girls paradise)! I visited the chop shop in beautiful chicago for a little labor day brunch with music and a big group of friends. First of all, the vibes on the roof were so lovely, and the music by dj Conzie was on POINT. Our table got bottomless mimosas and brunch and had so much fun dancing. I had the porchetta sandwich. This was one of the only places we could find a reservation to last minute during Covid-19, we came in the evening when the sun was going down but the rooftop has two umbrellas , if you're coming during the day and sitting outside you WILL be in direct sunlight. Rooftop patio has a good amount of seating but the place isn't massive; so your best bet to solidify a table is to use open table for a reservation. As a tourist, you see the city in a different light. It's very artsy and trendy. The drink menu had a variety of featured cocktails with really cool names! Whether you're a bourbon drinker or you favor a classic vodka, they have options for you. The food was magnificent. Menu items I've never seen before and the originals with a twist. They were not and I was again assaulted and my girlfriend was assaulted as well and had her phone thrown across the street, the owner upon witnessing this Was very unprofessional and rude, and I will never ever be giving my business to this venue ever again. I was berated verbally by the owner and her security after being physically attacked. And for this neighborhood to be in such a prime location in such a wonderful neighborhood, I don't feel safe and honestly if you come to this venue, I would be very aware of your safety and surroundings. Obviously the people who own this venue do not care about their patrons, or a good name for that matter and I honestly do not think it should be part of such a wonderful neighborhood. I was also overcharged I bought two beers and was charged $20 when I know the price of alcohol and it is not $10 a beer for someone who works in the service industry. I'll walk you through our side of things, but essentially after this experience I will never be attending another event at Chop Shop nor purchasing tickets for this venue through Dice. Essentially, when it comes down to it, the guy checking ID's at the door took a question that we had about information on the website so personally, that he let it affect his professionalism and customer service and subsequently took a personal grudge so far that he denied us entry to the event based on our "attitude." Please see below for details. So I would like to admit off the top, I forgot my wallet when I got to the venue. Since the website said it was an 18+ event, I thought we would try to ask about that at the door to see if I could still see the show. I know that ID is required for the show and I shouldn't have forgotten it, but sometimes people make mistakes and/or forget things. Here's how the first interaction went when we first got there: -Us (my boyfriend, Matt (CC'd) and I): "Hey man, so sorry to tell you but I forgot my ID at home, but the website said this is an 18+ event, so is there any way we could still see the show?" - The door guy (also, as previously mentioned, this man refused to give me his name when asked and only provided me with the moniker "Officer Friendly"-- he was about 5'7" or 5'8", bald, wearing a black beanie and had some tattoos)- "what kind of adult forgets their identification on their way to a show? I'm not losing my job over this" -Us: "okay, so we would have to go back and get the ID to come into the show? Is there any other way we can just see the show?" (Please note that we thought that there might be a chance we could just get X'd on our hands and still enjoy the show.) -Officer Friendly: "Unless you can provide her [my] parents or show us Identification, there is no way you are getting in here. Again, adults should always have their ID on them. I bet you'll never forget your wallet again after this. This is a lesson you need to learn." Now, at this point I was slightly taken aback because he had brought my parents into this. I am a twenty-five-year-old self-made woman. There was no way for him to know this, but my dad passed away in 2020 and my biological mom is a violent schizophrenic, so all I could muster up was "I don't have any parents that are available." He continued to make comments that were disdainful and unprofessional about how Uber exists, trains exist, and how we can make it back in time for the show. I decided that we would go, get my wallet, come back and show him that I am twenty five and I'm just an adult that made a mistake. I am a bit convinced, looking back on it now, that once we left the first time he was never going to let us in to see the show, but I know that that's just a hunch. Here's what occurred once we got back: -Us: "Here's my ID. It shows that I am 25, and I really didn't appreciate the comment you made about my parents earlier." - Matt: "Yeah it's kind of ridiculous because it says on the website that the event is 18+" At this point, Officer Friendly looked taken aback that anyone would dare question anything about what the website says, so he puffs out his chest and says "well if you don't want to follow the rules, I'm not going to let you in. You pissed off the GateKeeper man. You're not getting in with that attitude." Please note that him saying that he was the gatekeeper is a direct quote, as is the part about him teaching us a lesson that we won't forget. Please note here that we had only ever said something about what he said about my parents and just what the website said. We never resorted to personal attacks or said anything uncivil except for something along the lines of "this is ridiculous/bullsh**." And just based off of that, we were denied entry into the venue. Please also note that my boyfriend and I were completely sober upon arrival, even though my eyes were red because I was crying after being embarrassed about forgetting my ID and thinking about how I don't have any parents. Maybe based on my red eyes they thought we weren't sober, but we were not belligerent, incoherent, or uncivil by any means; we were trying to play by his rules, go back and get the ID and come back and say something about how the parent comment was out of line (even though, again, it's not like he knew. But he should really be more considerate of the fact that some people don't have support networks like we imagine). Long story short- the door guy might be on an ego trip and his manager won't care one bit. Customer service and friendliness is not a priority for paying customers, even at the front door. read more

Great local spot with good food, friendly staff, and a fun airy atmosphere. I first came here with a large group (15) for brunch and were treated like royalty. We were seated promptly, and staff were very attentive the entire time. We initially had two tables set up, but staff allowed us to push the tables together, which was awesome. They allowed us to take our time, staying beyond the 2 hour limit, and we did not feel rushed. They also were phenomenal in providing individual checks, without us even asking! Top notch service. From there, we all ordered bottomless mimosas ($25) and man were those dangerous. Staff did a great job of not letting our glasses be empty, topping us off as we went. With that said, be careful, hard to tell how much you have actually had to drink (not complaining). Food was also very good. I ended up getting the smash burger, which was unreal. One of the best burgers I've had in the city, which I was not expecting. Very flavorful and well prepared. Came with fries that were also delicious. I felt like the price was on par with the serving ($14). Overall, Chop Shop was great. Food and drinks were on point, and staff really went above and beyond. Atmosphere was relaxed and chill, with high rise ceilings creating an airy space. Great find in the Wicker Park area. read more

Chop Shop is the best! A hidden gem ! I came here for the Drag and Bingo brunch! Super fun, super friendly, and the atmosphere was so welcoming. The girls performance was great and their bingo playing was so much fun! The patio is small but very lovely , makes for a more intimate space with the hosts. The place is actually very big and they have a yummy selection of food for brunch (not sure about the rest of the menu) . The bottomless mimosas really hit!! Overall a great experience and would come again! read more
