Erin and Brian's dream of making Chop solely a dance club was the beat idea for this bustling neighborhood. I don't have high expectations when I visit a bar style place to see a restaurant; it just never really works. The location is great being in Capitol Hill, and i feel this place has potential but I think the owners just don't care enough. My friend and I visited from LA for the week and decided to see a band called "Elvis Depressedly" (Lo-fi, Modern Alternative Rock), and we were excited to see them. We're both 18, but the show was all ages so they let us in. Right away the building inside doesnt really look exciting; high school multipurpose rooms look better tbh. Although I am not of legal age to drink yet, The bar didn't look too exciting either. The place was lit in mostly Red, which resembled a grunge-type feel, although I didn't quite feel like this place was too exciting to be at. Considering so, I wonder how dance/bar events do; it is very average. I know my review is rather critical, but keep in mind when people see a concert they care about your surroundings. I live in Portland now, so coming back home to Seattle is often a heartbreaking occurrence with the city becoming more and more bland and all the places that i used to love disappear or become Amazon-ed out. But when i am back in Seattle for weekends, I've noticed Chop Suey is the only place I think that has actually improved over the last 5 years and stayed true to the actual feel of what Seattle actually is (sorry to anyone who is is more used to hanging out at more corporate friendly spots in SLU and Redmond who disagree) When i am back home the staff is always really nice even when it's busy, and the sound system is amazing and I love the weekend dance nights and the shows. This place will have a soft spot for me and I am glad it's on of those last places hanging in there read more

Absolutely terrible service in every aspect. The line to get in was fast but "head of security" will literally fight you for the $12 cover and wants you to wait in line behind an ATM to make sure you are paying an extra 3.50 to the establishment if you don't have cash. At this point I was willing to give the benefit of the doubt regardless of the security who would rather deny entry than promote loyal business and a "dj" who just had their phone connected to their spotify account playing a white people get turnt playlist. After following the bartender around their bar THREE TIMES for close to 30 minutes and watching them dump their slop bucket in the bathroom before serving me and four other patrons, I finally got a high end shot for my friends and I. After paying and drinking my first shot of the night my bartender asked why I didn't tip, I told her I had to wait 30 minutes to even get her attention while respecting covid guidelines and her patience as I have worked many years as a bartender and server. She told me she would kick me out if I did not tip her for the drink even though she did nothing but pour liquor into a shot glass 30 minutes after sitting at the bar being nothing but respectful towards her workflow. She grabbed my arm and dragged me to "head of secuirty" who told me "they can do whatever they want" and kicked me out for the rest of the night while I listened to Hey Ya by Outkast for the second time within my 45 minutes at this location. Only go to this venue if you have zero respect for your wallet and experience as an average tech bro in Seattle with no standards and certainly expect to be harassed by every employee you interact with unless you are showing them $$$ for a less than mediocre experience. I cannot comment on the food or daytime experience at this establishment, but what I can say is that the late-night scene is classic capital hill dance party! With a "Be Dirty. Dance Clean." slogan, Chop Suey really delivers. The music was all-consuming with volume, as it should be! The bar was fairly easy to navigate - and don't worry friends, they got White Claws. Waited 45 minutes in line, had to pay a $10 cover, walked onto the dance floor only to have my wallet stolen from INSIDE the bag I was wearing within minutes. Security guard and front desk lady said this was the 6th theft of the night and there's nothing they could do. So unprofessional, didn't even take down my information until I begged them to. Went last weekend for their "Sorry for Party Rocking" event. The venue is really nice, kinda smaller. The music was lit and the dj's were great. We got there before 10pm so it was free to get in which I liked. However, it was so hot in there I could barely stand it. I kept having to go to the bathroom and get a paper towel to wipe myself down. I even thought I sweated through my jeans several times throughout the night which I was embarrassed about. After we left my friend took off his shirt and wrung out his shirt and so much sweat came pouring out. I only saw one fan throughout the establishment along with one entrance door that was left open to air out. Came here for friends birthday for candi pop 90s night. All the music they played was great good vibes. It was ungodly hot and I just couldn't stay as long as I wanted to. It was hard to breathe. I wish they could get AC or more fans or SOMETHING. Bartenders and bouncers were overall pretty rude or impatient. I understand given where they work, but some of it was unnecessary. My girlfriend and I were planning on spending our four year anniversary downtown. I had tickets to see Surfers Blood a band I have enjoyed since 2014. Instead I was blocked from entering because i didn't have my vaccination card. Nothing on the Ticketmaster site indicated that I needed to bring it and even though I've been vaccinated since May your 'Chief of Security' would not work with me. I am now trying to get a refund for my tickets and salvage my anniversary. Your customer service was atrocious at a time when customers are just getting used to getting out of the house. read more

The biggest annoyance that I have for a bar is when I order the same exact drink and get charged two different prices. Granted it was a different of 50 cents but none the less, I still find it extremely annoying. So a star is gone right there. The second star goes away because apparently there was another person there with a similar last name who racked up a tab higher then mine but I got stuck with the bill. So when I asked to close out, the bartender closed out the wrong tab and I let her know. She was like ugh okay, and then got the other card with my last name and the tab was like $50, mind you I only had two drinks. So I was like yeah, this is my card but I got charged way too much, so she got a bit of an attitude about it. I could care less but I'm not paying xx dollars for two drinks. So I let her know. The charges are currently pending but moral of the story is to make sure you are charging the right person for the correct drinks they ordered. It is your responsibility to make sure the tab is correct and it is your responsibility to make sure to fix it without an attitude since it was your fault. Music was rad though. I went to Chop Suey last night for Candi Pop 90s night. $5 cover, so bring cash. There are lots of seating areas, and two separate bars. The dance floor looked like it was quite large too. They had free swag, and cotton candy if you followed them on Instagram. Fun to see a bar doing something different. It was fairly quick to get drinks too, even though it was crowded. Sadly, we weren't able to stay long though since it was way too hot in there. Seattle heatwave + tons of people + what felt like no A/C running = sweaty mess and too unbearable to even dance. For not knowing what I was getting myself into when meeting a group of friends here, i'd have to say this place wasn't what I was expecting at all. The 80's music dance party that was going on all night was quite the shocker, but completely unexpected for Capitol Hill, but still. There was a $5 cover, which I didn't think was worth it at all, but I guess that's how you make your money. The bartenders were really nice & didn't make you wait around for a drink. They did a pretty good job at keeping track at who was first to help. Overall, I don't think i'll suggest this bar to anyone. Although it was fun dancing in a huge group of people who enjoy 80's music, for the younger crowd (early to mid 20's) I feel like it's not the right place to be. read more

I have to agree with many of the reviews here that the staff (especially the door and security) are very rude. Not sure if they have to do this in order to do their jobs properly cause there are better approaches rather than come to work angry at the world. This was difficult for people like me who have never been to this place. The tables are sticky and the whole place has a dive bar like feel to it. Looking around at the neat decor and historical items, perhaps it is supposed to have an old town feel like a theme. It isn't consistent enough to validate that this was the look the owners were going for or not. I usually am a pretty generous patron. I don't go cheap when I visit a venue and I arrived early and ordered a fair amount of libations. The bartender (gentleman) at the time was very professional and proper like I came into an old time saloon. Very straight forward. The pours? Pretty cheap and small. I counted to 2ish when they stopped pouring. I don't like when people use the jigger but in this case, maybe it would've been better. The staff swapped over to concert mode and a short lady came to take over the back bar. She took more care for the dog ON the bar than the patrons in line (Health code?). I have to say, she did her best to remember the order of people but I was clearly in line when she ignored me to clear the bar out entirely and ask people who obviously didn't require anything before coming acknowledge me. Not sure if there was a prejudice involved but she was not very nice to me through the night. I watched her pay close attention to everyone else that came in an order of some sort and deliberately skip me. I just had to close out. IF YOU ARE A WOMAN DONT GO HERE. A group of us went for a Beyoncé vs Rihanna night and the staff was so rude. The bouncer started by splitting up our group so ONE PERSON had to wait outside while everyone else was let in. Then when I went to give my ticket and ID to the girl at the front i stood there with it all pointed at her and she looked at me like and idiot until the other bouncer came over and gave me a stamp. There was one bearded bartender that was good but everyone else ignored us at the bar. The DJs SANG the songs instead of letting them play and would stop the music and talk waaaaay toooooo much. After stepping out for a minute to get some air when I came back in one of the bouncers stopped me and told me to try harder to look like was enjoying myself and smile more. BOY BYE. According to my Uber drivers, and other locals, Chop Suey was a local favorite. I went for their re-opening night, as my friend's husband was going to perform. I feel like it's not my usual crowd and venue, but I definitely had a great time. The performers were awesome. When we were there, they did not yet have a full bar available so I stuck with my vodka cranberries. On the plus side, drinks were cheap! This is a great neighborhood spot for rad shows. I love it.

New ownership hasn't improved the club / space in well over a year. Bartenders are friendly enough, but only if you catch them on a good day. The drinks are expensive and smaller than you would expect. (Draft cider = $6 for a 12-14oz, well cocktails were $7 for a 6-8oz tiny plastic cup.) It's an OK place to go to a party - don't expect for anything to get going till at least 11pm (Those darn kids these days!) So yes - it's very average / OK - What's with the 'creeper' / manager at the back of the dance floor in what looks like a VIP box? You could surf the internet from home... very strange read more

I love this bar, I love this bar. I LOVE THIS BAR! Husband and I went for the Heart V. Fleetwood Mac competition, and all the bands where amazing! If there are more events like this, I'd move in next door. The building is huge, especially with the dance floor. I do wish they had more seating though, especially when you are drunk. It was also very hot with all the people. Maybe get some A/C? I was a little frustrated with the first bartender, she would not except my Military ID as proof of age. I've always been told that it's against federal law to turn that down as form of ID, but I really didn't want to argue and get thrown out, I was so excited about the music! There was a $5 charge the night I went, however there was pizza. You can never go wrong with ! So this is a very big place to dance, chill at The Den which is quieter and has lounge seating. In the corner there is pinball machines and a photo booth to take those cute pictures in black and white. However, I only give it one extra star because the music was really good! They played M83, The Naked and the Famous, Passion Pit, LCD Sound system, etc. I just really enjoyed it. The disco ball, fog, and the lasers made it look real cool to look up. cheap drinks in all BUT it was so HOT! I don't think there was any ventilation in the building, there were vents for it but nothing was on! It was so musky and very very hot... I just recommend that the place should fix their AC or get some ceiling fans of something to make the air flow! Ahh~ Anyways but if you want a place to dance your heart out and not give a crap. I will never come to this place again. My first time here, before 10pm for Dance Yourself Clean, and clearly the bouncer is racist. I (white) was let in without issue. Every other person in my party, who were brown, were harassed for absolutely no reason, under the guise of inspecting whether they were drunk (which they were not). The bouncer gave one of my friends a hard time insinuating he was completely trashed, staring him down and going on with "you ok, buddy?" He then did the same to my husband, who doesn't drink at all, saying "you look wobbly". I really liked going to DYC in LA - they should find a new venue in Seattle without racist staff. read more

The bouncer needs a lesson. I had the most bizarre experience with the bouncer at chop suey. A white, bearded, harmless looking man took it a point to over emphasize his role at 9.45 pm on July 8th 2017, when there were hardly any patrons at the place. Here's the sequence of events: 1) gave me the weirdest look, asked me if I was alright, took the longest time looking me over before letting me in. My friend thought It was because I have a lazy eye. Potentially legitimate doubt. FYI, I'm Indian 2) my white female friend is let in without fuss 3) my other Indian friend, husband of the girl, who's not been drinking is accused of being wobbly. he retorts, maybe your eyes are coz I've not been drinking. He makes the guy stand aside 4) makes the next Indian friend of mine stand aside as well Me and my female friend come out, I drag my friends out of there. And I am seething. If there's any iota of decency in that place, that man will not have his job. It's discrimination or probably plain moronic attitude of the highest degree. I wouldn't even give this bar a star if it would let me. Bouncer let me and my other friends in with not much issue. My wife who is early in her transition was accosted at the door by the bouncer who was staring her down in disgust the entire time he was carding us. His excuse was that he was trying to see if she was intoxicated. A simple glance would show she didn't have nystagmus, she was steady and clearly not intoxicated. It was purely discrimination, both size and gender identity. He told her she was "too short to be an adult" and that she "looked like a deer in headlights"...well no shit. She was shocked she was being treated this way...I would never give any business to this place, especially if you are lgbtqia+ or an ally of ours. Well, now having read the previous reviews, I really feel vindicated about the experience I had earlier tonight at Chop Suey. I hadn't been out to a DJ night in a long time, and the Dance Yourself Clean set seemed like my kind of music, so I decided to check it out. I wasn't planning on dancing, but I just wanted to spend an hour soaking in the tunes. When I got there, one of the bouncers kept asking me if I was okay, clearly insinuating that I looked inebriated, when the only reason I probably looked conspicuous was because I was Asian in a mostly white crowd and perhaps because I was by myself. At one point, I closed my eyes because I was getting into the music, and he came up to me and told me I shouldn't drink anymore for the night AND that I should keep my eyes open (?!?!?). I had already closed out my tab, and I can hold my drink and know when I'm being obviously drunk. I was already on guard in this establishment full of white people, so no, I was not stupid enough to get sloppy wasted, but this bouncer still decided to equate my closing my eyes and *very* subtly swaying to the music -- something I always do whether at a club or a classical music concert.-- as clear indication that I was about to fall over drunk. It was very, very strange. It really felt like an egregious instance of harassment considering how the whole club was full of people who were obviously many more drinks deep than I was, like 'some people looking doe-eyed and with their shirts off' deep. On top of all of this, even before this incident happened, when I had first arrived, a different bouncer had checked my ID at the door and asked me, "Is this your first stop tonight?" In hindsight, it seems like she was also insinuating I looked drunk which is ridiculous, unless Asian faces just naturally look shit-faced to their entire security team there. The question was so bizarre that I brushed it off, assuming I misheard her, until later realizing this was a pattern of behavior with their staff, i.e. using interrogation-like questions to intimidate and sabotage my having a good experience simply because I was a person of color. The fact that this treatment came from more than one bouncer and that there are similar complaints on Chop Suey's Yelp comment thread leads me to believe that this is behavior sanctioned by the management. I find this extremely disappointing. I've seen so many great shows at Chop Suey, even before when it was the Breakroom in the early 2000s. I've played a show there in my friend's band once. Through all of this, I've even looked past their questionably racist business name the whole time. It's a real fucking bummer. CS has turned into a shady, Trump-styled establishment that I will never set foot in again. My adamant recommendation is to avoid this place like the plague unless discrimination happens to be your thing. They officially suck. read more

I really enjoyed going to Dance Yourself Clean at Chop Suey until this past New Years Eve. We paid the $20 for the usual DJ (NYE is steep everywhere). Around 11:00 my buddy and I went out to smoke a cigarette and the bouncer only lets me back in. No Explanation. No refund. We sat there for a few minutes discussing with them but they wouldn't say anything except "He's not allowed back in." Sure seemed like they just wanted an excuse to take money under the table. Came here for DYC. Loved it! Except for the bartender who lost my card. Unprofessional and supremely rude. When I asked her to close out my tab she couldn't find my card and kept saying "looks like your card isn't here." Excuse me?!! I've been ordering drinks all night with you, whose tab have you been using? After all the bartenders got their crap together they finally found my card, thank god! Call me an upset and crazy customer but when you tell me "I can't take you seriously with tissue on your face..." That is just rude and unprofessional to the next level.
