For small town mainstream eatery, this place is superb. They consistently turn out high quality food between both the sides and BBQ main courses. If your in Smithville for the day, you won't be disappointed. I recommend the brisket, deep fried okra though many of the other items are great as well. Ribs plus burnt ends equal happy tummies. Drove from out hotel near the Kansas City airport and enjoyed the backroads. Adorable town, decorated for Christmas in November. Loved it, like a Hallmark movie. Onto the food. Platter for two plus the fried corn appetizer. Amazing. Way too much food, but we managed to make a dent and got two large rolls and the left over meat for lunch the next day along with some of the super BBQ sauce. After searching on yelp, decided to try this highly rated barbecue joint for an early dinner. The gentleman allowed me to taste the sausage prior to ordering. We decided to share a platter of pulled pork, the sausage and ribs. The ribs were very tender and we're a good size rib. Sausage could've been a little spicier for my preference and the pulled pork was really wet. Did enjoy all three sauces and really loved the fresh onion ring, and season fries. Sweet tea is authentic and service is friendly and prompt. All tables covered with brown paper that you can draw on with crayons and they have "table art" posted everywhere - cool idea. Despite having a lot of awards hanging up, the pulled pork tasted like roasted pork with no smoke flavor to speak of. Seemed like it had a little bark but maybe from their rub and roasting. The bold BBQ sauce they have is good, but BBQ meat should be able to stand on its own flavor if it's offered on the menu. I struggled to find any meat in the "brisket baked beans" - appeared to be canned Bush's beans with something giving a hint of smokiness. I've added Chops to my Best BBQ in the Northland list. We got the huge $99 Everything Platter - all the meats, with four sides and devoured it! (but couldn't finish it - leftovers!) Here's the thing, everyone at my table had a different favorite. Brisket, sausage, turkey, ribs, burnt ends, ham - all noted. Even the sides were a notch better than we expected. So huge. So good. My son and I were in town for a disc golf tournament and found this wonderful place for lunch. Ordered the Haagenslaw and LOVED every bit. Nice and smokey pulled pork and the slaw was not too sweet. My son says the sweet potato fries were the best he has ever had. Server was very nice and pretty sure the owners were who greeted us with a big welcome when we came through the door. Having had their BBQ at a hosted event, I had an idea of what to expect. Last night we had a chance to dine in with out of town family and boy oh boy, we weren't disappointed. The space is on the small side but it's clean and decorated in a very BBQ friendly way. Seating was not a problem. Background music was great and not too loud. Perfect actually. Our server was Delaney and she took care of us start to finish. We found her personable, positive, helpful, attentive and sincerely concerned about our experience start to finish. To be fair, her service was exemplary. I ordered a full rack with a side of cheesy bacon potatoes. The ribs had a nice bark and pretty much fell off the bone. Three sauces are offered - Sweet, Hot and Bold. Of the three my preference was the bold. It had a hint of molasses. The cheesy bacon potato side was delish and larger size-wise than I find offered at other restaurants. The rest of the table included burnt ends, onion rings, a brisket sandwich, corn nuggets and pork rinds to go. I can attest to the quality of the burnt ends and they were some of the very best I've ever had. The corn nuggets were delish as well. This was our first visit to Chops. We were in Smithville on a Sunday and drove past Chops and I suggested we try it. Soon as we seated ourselves, a server came over with a big welcome to us. We ordered a couple Tank 7's and they were served in an ice cold bottle. We both ordered the Pulled Park sandwich with Fried okra on the side. Our meals were served in about 5 minutes. Everything piping hot, nice size servings and some delicious pickles served on the side. our server checked back with us and I commented about the fabulous crisp pickles. Found this little barbecue stop off 35 on our way to Kansas City. The meat was good but the sides could be better prepared. For starters, the Mac and cheese was lacking flavor and tasted like boiled macaroni in a basic canned cheese sauce. The baked beans had good pieces of brisket but were more like what you get out of the can. They both lacked seasoning. Service was exceptional and the servers were attentive and came to the table often. I think it was a fund raiser night since there were ALOT of help for a small business. The additional charge on our checks could have been presented up front as to this happening since we were from out of state. Ambiance was cozy and quaint for a small store front. Go there for the meat cause it is good with their sauces but skip the sides unless your ok with basic sides. read more

Grabbed lunch at Chops today. We order online, not knowing how busy it would be and wanting to stay socially distanced. When we arrived to pick it up, we found them have a few tables outside! We ate our takeout at the outside tables. We ordered and shared the two meat platter with ribs, brisket, fries, and the cheesy bacon potato side. The ribs were delicious and tender and the seasoned fries were crispy and tasty. The cheesy potato side has a sweetness to it that I didn't love, but it wasn't bad.
