Spent several days in Kansas City for work recently and tried all the various downtown barbecue places I recommended. They were okay. At the airport, on the way out of town, I decided to grab a meal and saw this place listed here on Yelp, along with a few others. None of the reviews were really great for any of them, so I took a chance and came here. I got the burnt ends and the coleslaw, and I absolutely devoured it and loved my meal. When in KC, you have to get some burnt ends, amirite? Meat Mitch fits the bill, famous for their burnt ends and "whomp sauce" made from the drippings. I had the cheddar jalapeño sausage and the burnt ends which were great with the whomp bbq sauce and yellow brick road bbq sauce. Sides fell flat: the mac & cheese was lukewarm and gelatinous, the creamy coleslaw was mostly cream, and they accidentally gave me some fries which I tried and were not bad, but just pretty much average seasoned fries. So, the meat is the star not surprisingly! Another thing to know is they did not tell me that I was ordering for Takeaway and they did not offer me a seat so there was some uncomfortable confusion when the server who section I sat on, seemed ready to cast me out after I just paid $38 for barbecue for one. Just grabbed a bite to eat at the airport location prior to a flight. Disappointed is a good word to start with. I had the Naked and Afraid. I essentially got a crumpled sandwich with mostly fatty burnt ends, a couple of slices of sausage, and a few Jalapeños. It was cool to the touch and lacked the charred mayo. I'm still not sure what the matchstick potato is because there was nothing else on my platter, aside from a couple of pickle slices and a few slices of red onion. My wifey got the Pickled Pig. Her sandwich definitely contained more meat than mine, sadly was also tepid. As for the fried pickles, she finally found 1!!! She added a side order of curly fries, and unfortunately, they were tepid as well and tasted like they were previously heated in a microwave oven. Traveling through KS and stumbled upon this gem. They have table options, however I placed my order at the to-go counter with a very kind and humorous young lady lol. I ordered the brisket chili which was surprisingly really good for airport food. Flavorful and they didn't skimp on the meat. If you want some bbq while waiting for your flight, highly recommend checking them out. They do have the option of placing an order to go in case you rather eat at your gate or grab a drink at the wine bar right next to it which is exactly what i did. I had previously tried Meat Mitch's Leawood location and so I wanted to show my family the restaurant while we were waiting in the airport. It fully lived up to the other location! We ordered two dishes, The Mac Daddy and the Cheesy Hog Fries. Both were extremely delicious. The Mac Daddy had super tender, melt in your mouth burnt ends with creamy and flavorful Mac n cheese. The Cheesy Hog Fries were insanely packed with flavor, they were surprisingly sweet. The food came out almost immediately after ordering and had a bunch of sauces to try. Great spot in the MCI airport. My flight was delayed by an hour so I decided to try this joint. This place hit the spot. Even though it's located in the Airport, it still gave BBQ joint vibes. Only thing missing were the community tables. The waitress was super friendly and very helpful. It wasn't very busy so there wasn't a rush and I was attended to in a very timely manner. Got a brisket Sammy before I got on my flight. I tell you what it was one of the best that I have had in awhile. I really like the buns they have there. They are very soft and kind of like buttery. Not flaky and fluffy like a cheap hamburger bun. It came with tons of brisket on it, bbq sauce and some onions I think. That brisket Sammy was awesome!!! It filled me up for my 3 hour flight. The coleslaw was amazing too. It was creamy and tasty and even had some purple onions it it that made it pop and have a spicy flavor. Want to give a shout out to JULIE! She was amazing with what she was working with. There were a few items that were unavailable, staffing was short and kitchen wasn't doing the best, but Julie was rocking it! GET THE FRIED PICKLES! They were fried perfectly and ranch was included! I got the smoked fried chicken salad and a few topping were missing; bacon and potatoe stix. The salad was pretty boring and the chicken was cold but had good breading. Meat Mitch is good and getting better. In most cases, I can never understand why restaurants don't deliver the same quality when they're inside an airport. The brisket was not as good as I wanted it to be but the burnt ends were tasty and had a nice texture. The service was fantastic and was always there when I needed something. When I enter a city, I'm always looking for the foods that city specializes in. So when I dropped into Kansas City, I just had to have some of that sweet and rich BBQ that KC is known for. What surprised me was that I was able to find some right in the airport. I had a 3 hour connection delay which is long enough to get something to eat, but not longe enough to Uber and go out of the airport. Fortunately, Pitmaster Mitch Benjamin's newest location is in the middle of the new KCI terminal and has been serving Q since it opened in March 2023. It's tough to do quality food in an airport because of logistics, fluctuating crowds, limited space etc. Bit even tougher to do good slow cooked meats and sides, yet Meat Mitch is able to pull it off. Service - Our server Amanda was by herself this Sunday evening yet she was friendly and efficient and kept the tables and bottle tops clean. I asked her what her favorite dish was and without blinking she said "Cheesy Hog Fries". She said, "I eat them almost every day", yet her slender build did not corroborate her story. Cheesy Hog Fries (5 stars) - A whopping mound of Curley does that can easily feed 5. Topped with pulled pork, pig candy, melted tillamook cheddar, pickled jalapeño, and ranch and you've got an ultimate comfort food. Bigger and better than expected, plus the fries were crispy and the sauce was just drizzled in and it too heavy. BBQ Plate (4 Stars) - Pull tender brisket and smokey pulled pork were moist and flavorful. I only wish there was more. Sides - (4.5 stars) - The baked beans were sweet and rich and loaded with chunks of burnt ends. Savory and surprisingly good. The Cole slaw had a nice blend of sweet and vinegar and a sprinkling of chopped vegetables. Power Crunch Salad (4 Stars) - Often salads are an afterthought at airports and BBQ places but this one was nicely done with avocado, quinoa, hunks of apple, candied walnuts, craisins, pickled onion, and two cups of lemon vinaigrette. Multiple flight delays had me looking for dinner at the Kansas City airport. In general, the KC airport does not have good food choices in my humble opinion. It's one of those things though - this was the only nearby restaurant in the airport that had a halfway decent Yelp and Google rating and I was hungry and had a long layover and so I didn't have much of a choice. I decided to get the Competition Style Burnt Ends Platter to take away my second time at Mitch's Meat. I enjoyed it so much the first time. Big mistake this time around. All Star Platters. I consider myself somewhat of a BBQ aficionado. My wife and I had a layover at the Kansas City, MI airport. We are from California (Oakland/San Francisco area) and I love to grill and smoke meats. I have tasted some authentic Texas BBQ and OMG - it was SUPERB, so I was hoping to get some great Kansas City BBQ. Now I know that the airport is propbably no the best place to find great BBQ, but Meat Mitch had good reviews. The other two BBQ restaruants in Terminal 2, didn't pop up in my search,, but I ran into them while searching for Meat Mitch. Meat Mitch also appeared to be cheaper for Burnt Ends. I wish that I remembered the names of the other restaurants. One of them had some superb BBq sauce, but that is not what this review is about. I think the brisket and the burnt ends were cooked well, but I did not see a smoke ring on brisket and the meat lacked the flavor of a good rub. However, the St. Luis ribs were tasty. They were also out of Mac and Cheese. The good thing that I did like was that the portions were respectable. BBQ is inherently pricy these days, but it is disappointing when you pay a lot for a plate and don't even get full, or you feel like you just paid full price for a sample. Not here. Thanks for the generous portions. Also of note, the mini sides are just that. It's enough to compliment the meal, but probably not enough to share, if two people are sharing a plate, unless you don't eat much. I only wish that I had tried the other two BBQ restaurant to compare. Disclosure: If you don't really know good BBQ, this restaurant might be ok for you.
