Food is delicious, service is amazing, friendly staff and food is ready fast. I took off one star because I feel it's a bit pricey. It's not something I can afford on a regular basis but I love getting it when I can. Feeding a family of 5 here is just $$$. When I get it it's usually when it's just me or a special thing with one of the kiddos. It's usually about $25 for my meal and a child's. I highly recommend trying it. My hubby is a big bbq fan & KC has its gamete of them. I always try to find different ones & competition bbq can be a little different then the norm. This place has a lot of trophies & ribbons but I think things must've changed. There wasn't any smoke flavor in the meat, heck there want even a smoke smell in the air when I drove up. I drove about 25 mins to this place because the owner was a friend of my friends & when they use to get samples of his work he loved it. We all shared these platters that I bought but no one liked any of this food. I'm trying to figure if it was an off day but how is that possible with bbq? Try again? For a small town barbeque, Chops has big time taste. Their burnt end sandwich is amazing. I have had their turkey and it is very good too. I ordered a burnt end platter with fries and beans. I was very disappointed when I saw the amount of burnt ends that was served. there was 3 chunks and a few small pieces all of which would fit in a 1 cup measuring cup. this cost me $32.31. I could not believe the price for such small amount. This was a Togo order so I paid for it expecting to get a good amount of burnt ends for that price. The burnt ends were ok definitely not worth the price. Terrible experience I will never go back again. read more

Smithville has a place to call their own! Welcome to Chop's BBQ! You enter an establishment with BBQ trophies and ribbons spread it throughout. Well you know someone knows their way around a smoker. Very casual decor, clean and very inviting. Simple menu with a lot of different choices to make a platter. Several beers in bottles for you to choose from to wash down on your meal. I ordered spicy fried pickles with a side of ranch, half pound of burnt ends, half pound of sausage, half slab of ribs with cheesy bacon potatoes. Spicy fried pickles: Very tasty and crunchy appetizer. The batter had a kick but was not overly spicy. Burnt ends: These smoked morsels of beef goodness were anything short of bite-size. Their Burnt Ends were meaty with the right amount of smoke. Dip them and your choice of BBQ sauce bold or sweet and they are mouthwatering awesomeness! I favor the Bold BBQ sauce over the sweet barbecue sauce. The Bold was not spicy I just had more seasoning and was not as sweet. Smoked sausage: The smoke sausage was not bad but he was not a highlight-reel either. Several of the pieces were moist and delicious with a great smoke flavor. Other pieces needed a little more love in my opinion. But overall the sausage was still good. I would like to try the sausage again with hopes of swaying me to a higher rating. The ribs: I would say the ribs for my favorite. There a couple things I look for in a good rib. I look for good smoke ring, tender/fall off the bone, and the ability to consume lot quantities without BBQ sauce. These ribs fit all three categories. I looove burnt ends and theirs are some of the best in KC! I've been to BBQ places where the meat is amazing and the sides are FINE but IMO Chops has both. I love their beans and fries. Everyone is town RAVES about this place. My husband and I went after moving to Smithville from KC. The nachos were $15 and there was barely any brisket on them. It was mostly just cheese. The brisket that was on them was very good but after ordering brisket as a meal we were told that they were out. Which means they use the very last bit of brisket for our nachos. we then received our meals. My husband got a two meat platter and I got turkey. The sausage looked really weird on the two meat platter. It was discolored, tasted extremely weird, and had a strange smell. Obviously, we did not eat it, but we did taste it trying to figure out if it was OK. We also added side salads to our dinners which were 2.99 apiece. The only issue was that all it was was lettuce and cheese. I never ask for things to be removed off my bill because most of the time it's our own fault for ordering it. But I did ask for a refund on the sausage. Which the server was absolutely awesome and removed it from our bill, the cheesy corn I got was like soup there was barely any corn in it all liquid and honestly it was very disappointing. Being from Kansas City we love our barbecue and our cheesy corn And we know the difference between good and bad. Our bill ended up being $75 for my husband and I and one appetizer so I would say it is very overpriced for what you get but what do you expect in a small town? The manager wasn't in the location when we went to eat that day so I shot out a message on Facebook and just explain to him what happened. he read my message and ignored it. I gave him almost 2 weeks to respond and today I followed up again read with no response. We are very disappointed in chops. Amazing! We are all more than satisfied! My best friend is one of the pickiest eaters I know, yet she loved the food especially the cheesy potatoes. She said they were the best she has ever had. My wife is a BBQ lover, I just heard her say that this was the best BBQ she has ever had. My favorite meat was the burnt ends! I've been to a highly rated BBQ place in Dallas TX and this place holds up! I can now understand how they won awards displayed in their window. This was an incredibly underwhelming experience tonight. My son and I both ordered brisket and it was probably the driest I've ever had anywhere. We had to drench it in BBQ sauce so much we couldn't even taste brisket just to get it down. This review would have been 1 star but the turkey was great (even though I ordered sausage) and my son mentioned the fries where amazing and I concured. Either way, avoid the brisket here, it's dry, underwhelming and tasteless. With all the YouTube videos out there and Matt pitman handing out brisket recipes for free there's no excuse. read more

Tried this place for the 1st and last time. I had a half a rack of ribs sausage and brisket. The ribs were ok the brisket was so over cooked when you stuck your fork in it it just shredded like it had been warmed up sevral times the sausage was mealy and over processed not good also had an order of pork rinds that were just bad no seasoning at all just bad the best thing on the menu was the sweet potato cross cut frys. So I ordered the $30 platter with ribs, brisket, and pork. It came with two sides, which I chose the fried okra and the cheesy bacon potatoes. This was more than enough food to last me three meals! Everything was good, but my favorite thing was those potatoes. The ribs were some of the best ones I've had... don't even really need to add sauce to them. But if you do like your sauce, they have a hot, a bold, and a sweet option on the table, and if you get it to go they can give you little containers to put some in. Place was tricky to find because of major construction going on but glad I found it. So this is the BBQ I was looking for on my visit to KC. I got two meats, sausage and the recommended brisket. Sausage was unreal - nice texture with no unpleasant bits in the bite. I was told it was a BBQ blend they use. It was unreal. The brisket was one of the best I ever had. Nice smoke ring with a tender melt in your mouth bite. Accompanied with their own sauces for every liking. For sides I had beans which where nicely spiced and not soupy. I wanted the slaw but they were out, had to get fries which had a batter coating and enough to share but I was alone. All in all I would go back if just to look at all the awards they got and get some pork next time. Lots of take out going on - locals know this place is goooooood! read more

Good BBQ. They have brown paper as table cloth and they provide crayons. Nice experience to draw a little while you wait. What I liked most were the French fries and Tater tots. Outstanding!! Hot and Perfect. I believe the platter is definitely over priced for the amount of meat, and it was served on the cold side (not sure if that's normal). Three BBQ sauces- sweet, bold, spicy. I would rate the sauces as a 4 out of 5 in my book, but I like the spicy the most. Excellent staff- very friendly, and good service. My only reservation was the "platter" price point. We love this place! I wanted to give it a second try before giving a review. The service has been great, the ladies are so polite and accommodating. The beans are the perfect balance between smoky and sweet, the fries are hot and crisp. I had the two meat sandwich meals both times. Both times I got the pulled pork and sausage. The pulled pork was tender and juicy. The sausage has tons of black pepper that I love( spicier the better)! The fried pickles were a little too heavily breaded , but that comes back to personal preference. The coleslaw is slightly sweet with a refreshing vinegar tang. We love supporting local businesses. This place gave me the worst stomach ache. I went in and got the burnt ends. They were dry and tasted old. When I left I figured I'd just take the loss (not a big deal). Staying near the Kansas City airport for 2 days and reached out to my good friends on Yelp to find a good place for BBQ. I'm from TX and usually smoke my own meats because I'm exceptionally critical of the smoked food group. I liked the proximity to my hotel (15min drive), the staff (9), and the ambiance (hole in the wall 9). I also liked Ced L.'s approach so I'm going to follow his lead and grade the food on a 10 scale. I got the 2x meat platter with ribs, brisket, slaw, and the bacon cheese potato things. Ribs: 9 (a 10 is probably a unicorn for me). I slapped my momma, and it's mother's day. The flavor is outstanding! I didn't use any sauce (because that's how you make bad BBQ tolerable), and I will warn you that no less than 3 times I got squirted - yes, squirted - biting into them. I don't know how it's possible, but it happened... and I liked it. Brisket: 8 for size (thick) and texture (could cut it with my plastic fork). I wasn't a fan of the rub, but it was good. That's all personal preference anyway. If I have to cover up the dryness of brisket, I prefer Stubbs sauce vice the sweet stuff... but that's their thing here in KC, so I'll accept it. Slaw: 5. Nothing to write home about, not bad though. Bacon/potato thing: 2. Who (besides communists) doesn't love bacon, cheese, and potato? Apparently me. It was too sweet for my taste, and I was very disappointed. Why they add sugar to that, I don't know, but I guess they like everything a little sweeter here than I'm used to. Great BBQ! I usually try to grab some during my ventures around Kansas City. I ordered the Burnt Ends which were perfect! Some places tend to over cook them and compensate with pouring bbq sauce all over, but these are actually served without sauce and were still very moist. I also ordered the spicy fried pickles were also pretty awesome. They have a hint of spice which really makes them stand out from other fried pickle appetizers.
