They will accept my husband's insurance for him, but not for me. Every time I show them the paperwork from the insurance, they say that it's wrong and I can't get an appointment or the appointment isn't covered. (They say that Affinity Group and Dr. Tsao are not covered by my insurance - see attached card.) My husband - who has the SAME insurance - has no issues. They've said I can only make appointments using the app, not the website, just lots of random issues have come up over the years. I've been polite and patient through all of this, but it's just too hard and makes no sense. Anyhow, Dr. Tsao is great overall, but I am concerned that she doesn't understand that plants have protein and am looking for a doctor that is a bit more holistic.

He believed in me, and therefore gave everyone else confidence to proceed in evaluating, listing and transplanting me. If you want an intelligent, diligent and caring doctor, he is your guy. He is younger, so a bit more approachable and flexible and welcome to new and innovative treatments, or to at least consider them without just throwing them out. He attends seminars and conferences regularly to stay up to date, as well as puts on educational conferences of his own in the area. He is patient with my questions and requests for more explanation, but most important, he listens to me. He has been my favorite and most faithful doctor in my lifetime of receiving care for my complicated pulmonary disease history. I truly recommend Dr. Steve Hays for anyone seeking out a pulmonary/transplant specialist, the bonus being you have the entire Heart & Lung Transplant & Pulmonary teams at UCSF in addition to his medical expertise and manner.

Three years ago this July, I used Dr. Kahn to perform a prostate biopsy to obtain samples of cancer…read moreto send to Germany for genetic sequencing. The German lab sent very precise protocols for how the samples were to be collected, frozen, stored and shipped. Dr. Kahn and his team failed to meet those protocols, resulting in compromised samples which had to be collected a second time. Apparently he or his office failed to read the protocol specifying liquid nitrogen storage; they used dry ice instead. What the heck, right? Cold is cold. What do those German geneticists know, anyway? It seems they didn't have any liquid nitrogen on hand. But Smitten Ice Cream, down the street, had plenty of it. They use it to make ice cream. Perhaps the good doctor might have gone down and borrowed a liter or two to comply with protocol? In all events, during the second biopsy, while I was in a very compromising position which I will not describe, Dr. Kahn asked, in a tone of evident, palpable scorn, "What do you want sequencing for? Immunotherapy?" Well, yes, actually. The good doctor then offered me his opinion of this silly caprice of sham medicine, all the while snipping prostate samples through a tube inserted in my . . . Well, you get the idea. He hadn't learned about it in medical school in the '70s, so it had to be a load of, um, hooey, I guess. When I recovered from the indignity of the biopsy, I complained to the hospital's medical director about Dr. Kahn's attitude. His failure to comply with protocol cost me three weeks in a situation where time was important. Three years later, I am alive and healthy, despite an original, rather grim, diagnosis. Cancer immunotherapy is a recognized medical discipline that has saved many lives and is becoming part of the new standard of care. My referral to Dr. Kahn came after a miserable night spent at the CPMC ER, in a good deal of pain, and an overnight stay as an inpatient, thanks to a bout with kidney stones. The CT scan revealed about 8 in each kidney. I have subsequently been followed by Dr. Kahn for about 8 years. I have had two lithotripsies to try to deal with the stones, have had numerous office visits and have had several ER visits as well. I have always found Dr. Kahn and his office staff to be kind, professional and empathic. In an emergency, they will fit you into the schedule. As an RN who has worked in the operating room, I know that, often, procedures and an emergency situation don't go like clockwork and can wreak havoc with an office shedule and waiting patients. If I have to wait for my appointment, I undrstand if things can get backed up. Stones and kidneys are serious business and I'm not talking about income for the physician. Anything that can cause permanent kidney damage, resulting dialysis or the ultimate need for a kidney transplant is not taken lightly. At least, for me, and I am the most critical person I know, about quality of medical care, I have nothing but the highest praise for Dr. Kahn - and, Dr. Sharlip, who followed me when Dr. Kahn was on vacation.

A month later I received a huge medical bill from his office asking for more than $700. I have been going for routine preventative checkups for more than 5 years now and never had any issues. I contacted his office multiple times to rectify this error but he never replied to any of my questions, instead his office staff rudely kept justifying these charges for routine preventative medical services. It was my first time going to Dr. Lane for routine preventative checkup and it was a horrible experience.

She was informed and informative, and didn't mind lots of questions from me. Two things finally drove me to leave her practice. The first is that it is very very difficult to get through to her office. My husband finally set me the task of making appointments for him since he couldn't afford the typical 15 minutes on hold every time he called, and eventually I got tired of getting taken for my appointments 45-60 minutes late. The second gripe I had was that when I told her we were ready to get pregnant, she did not give me a lot of information about how to get started, just told me to "have a lot of sex and we'll check back in a year". This may be standard practice for under-35's like myself, but I was back in a year, not pregnant and worried that there was something wrong. *Then* she gave me more advice about fertility timing, and bang, I was pregnant six weeks later. She also generated a series of tests that my insurance company would not pay for because they said those tests needed to have been ordered by a fertility specialist. (Dr. Lederman said she wouldn't refer me to a fertility specialist without the test results.) So I found another doctor, frustrated that we lost a year in getting our family started because of her (lack of) advice.
