So, after over a year, wanted to give this place another try, just to be fair.... but my initial instinct was right. This place isn't what it used to be, and the proprietors need to do better!! We went into by some ensaymada, and when I was selecting them, noticed black spot on them. Turned out it wasn't Ube... it was MOLD!! Gross!! Never again. You can't run a business like that and expect to get repeat customers! ----- Our family used to be a frequent customer of this place for over 20 years, but this place has been going down hill for years. And now, we're no longer going to buy from them or recommend them to friends & family! Why? Well, their breads are often stale, ensaymada is dry and old tasting. A few times their pastillas and tarts tasted old... but the last time I bought it, all 4 bags had gone rancid!! Gross!!! And we had brought various goodies to a family gathering and was embarrassed by it. Personal experiences may count for a lot, but if you haven't been "around" then how can you quantify your statement? I've been to Filipino bakeries in San Francisco, Orange/Los Angeles/San Diego Counties, New York, and New Jersey. I can say, without question, that Christine's does not offer the best pan de sal on the planet. Fritzie's (which is also in Bergenfield), Valerio's (a chain in California), and Philippine Bread House (Jersey City) all put out a top notch pan de sal...better than Christine's. So what does Christine's do well? Cakes! Their sheet cakes are top notch. The grandeur and flavor of their mocha cakes has no contemporaries in all of New Jersey. Craving for something sweet and I bought this roll at the Filipino store here in Perryhall. When I tried it , shit was not even sweet. Wasted my $25 on this unsweetened piece of roll cake lol . This is a nice little bakery in Bergenfield. They have fresh breads, pastries, and they make custom cake designs. They do their best as a small business in the area and I've had a number of childhood birthdays cakes made here. I happened to be in the area and picked up some bread. I thought it was odd when there were no customers there. My son had the ube Ensaymada bread that evening for dessert. That night, he came down with a stomach ache. The next morning, my daughter, my mother, and I had the rest of the Ensaymada bread for breakfast. The bread tasted stale so we decided to bake it to make it taste better. We tried the mango cake and to our dismay, the cake tasted like toxic chemicals! It literally tasted like detergent. I'm not sure what this bakery puts in their food, but they cannot continue to operate in this manner! We immediately spit out the cake and threw it all away. The bakery food was the only thing we ate that morning. Before noon, we all had suddenly gotten a stomach ache and diarrhea! My husband was the only one who didn't eat the bread and was fine. We all got food poisoning from this bakery! Unless you want food poisoning like us, I recommend to stay away! read more

I've never been much of a bread eatin' kind of fella (I'm a rice boy), this Pinoy panaderia definitely has a cheater's way to my heart. Apart from the pan de sal, get some pan de sal 'baliwag' (mini pan de sals), asado roll, ensaymada, mamon, hopya, polvoron (get the ones with pinipig - crispy rice - in it, sha!!), pastillas... Sh*t hang on I just drooled on the keyboard. Stupid/Collegiate pan de sal appreciation technique: nuke one piece in the microwave exactly 12 seconds. Promptly retrieve when microwave dings. I've heard a lot of good things about Christine's Bake Shop from family members and other Yelpers, so I decided to stop by during my little visit to the Berg. This particular branch is small, but does carry quite a variety of freshly baked breads, pastries, and cakes. Mini Pan de Sal ($1.50): Freshly baked? Yes! That price is unbeatable. Taste wise, it's solid. However, I'll have to echo another Yelper: Christine's does not pump out "the best pan de sal on the planet." It's a matter of opinion, of course; however, the fresh pan de sal from a random bakery in the Philippines tops this, hands down. I'll also second Valerios in California, especially the San Jose branch (shoutout to the 408!). However, I do think the pan de sal here is soft and delicious. I'm used to buying the larger Stella's-brand pan de sal, but Christine's is good too. Pandan Cake Roll ($12): From the first bite, I could tell it was fresh. The cake was soft, moist, and had a good amount of cream filling. I'm not fond of cake, but this was alright since it was not overly sweet. I'm not sure what it was, but the small green dots on top of the icing stuck to my teeth, so that was probably the main thing I did not like about this roll. Pastillas ($2.80): These are probably the best items I bought. They were super soft, rich, flavorful, and tasty. Get the ube flavored ones! It has the perfect balance of sweetness, and is not as rich or sweet as the original Pastillas de Leche. There is also a pandan flavor if that appeals to you, as well. I would definitely come back for the Pastillas de Ube. There are different kinds of ensaymada, cake rolls ($11-12 each), larger round cakes ($24-$25 each), pan de coco, mamon, Food of the Gods, brownies, and...cannolis!? I asked my friend to pick up my birthday cake. He noted that the spelling of my name was incorrect although it was clearly written in our order. He asked that it be corrected but was told that they "are too busy, there are customers here." Seriously?? Was your rudeness due to the fact that my friend was white and NOT Filipino? I have the original receipt and have proof that it was spelled incorrectly by whoever decorated the cake. Did you not want to correct YOUR MISTAKE because the order was already pre-paid? Honestly wish I could give this no stars. I just bought a bag of pan de sal and jumbo ensaymada and I was very disappointed. The pan de sal had a bunch of mold on it when we bought and the cashier didn't even notice. The ensaymada smelled like toxic chemicals when I opened it. My family has come here to buy cakes for the holiday and the pan de sal. The pastry and other stuff they have here are good which i like but the downfall about this bakery is the women's that work here are straight up nasty, they don't give u a welcoming when u come in nor give u a pleasant service when being help. A yr or so i had recommend a friend to go there with his family since they fell in love with a certain cake but had no idea the name of it so i said that christine's bakery may know what they are looking for and will help him out. The result of that i come to learn that the worker's at christine's was rude and nasty with my friend and his family and said that they will never go there anymore.. That was very embrassing for the fact that i'm a flippino and me being here in the US since i was 2yrs old (all my life) would never thought to treat ppl like that with businesss or no business. Flippino's are known to be the nicest ppl around others. So i recently gone there this wk and when i got there the old lady in the front didn't welcome me nor ask me if i needed help and when i ask her a few question about their pastry she spoken to me but look the other way. First of all, the place was not busy to be overwhelm so to treat cust like this is unnecssary, u may have good things, but to serve customers like the way u do and us being buyers will just write our reviews on our experience w/u, so others can read this before deciding to go there and have to experience the same which instead they can be smart and take their business else where so u won't have business. My parents went this past Sunday and bought an Ube roll. We've been going to this bakery for years. When I had a slice, it tasted very different in a bad way! I told my aunt & she said it tasted old to her. I also saw another recent review on their Facebook fan page where someone mentioned that the Ube cake they ordered had mold it in & she provided pictures.
