Chubby's conveniently had a soup and salad bar. "Sorry, we don't have soup today." Since they had salad I still got what I wanted. And, I believe Chubby's took a $1 off for the soup's absence. The salad bar was unexceptional--roughly pulled apart iceberg lettuce, a few typical add-ons (bacon bits, cheddar cheese, grape tomatoes, etc.) the most popular supermarket dressings, and a few options like potato salad, coleslaw, and chocolate pudding. My boyfriend loves this place, and we drove over an hour to eat breakfast here. I was not as impressed. We arrived to the restaurant approximately 10:30 on a Sunday and they close at 11 on weekends. There wasn't more than about a third of the restaurant full this late in their breakfast hours. The meal he said was so fantastic was the chicken fried steak. The chicken fried steak breakfast comes with toast, hash browns, and two eggs your way. He ordered his with two eggs over easy and I asked for wheat toast, crispy hash browns, and to give my eggs to him. The gravy was thick and had a good flavor, but was a little too thick for my personal preference - it seemed somewhat gelatinous. The steak was tender, crispy on the exterior and also had good flavor (likely due to the batter). My hash browns came out nice and crispy but were freezer burned and tasted horrible even with ketchup. My toast was barely browned and still quite soft and floppier than a baby bunny's ears. I wouldn't call it toast. Would I go back? Definitely not worth the drive since the city (where we live) has much better options. If I'm out that way? The wife and I decided to try Chubbys out after moving here a few years back. Was always told they had good food, good steaks. My wife ordered their 6oz steak with baked potato and side of Mac n cheese. I ordered the half fried chicken with fries and we both had the salad bar. After working as a Chef/cook at numerous restaurants, this is just my opinion. Salad bar was standard except for old veggies , the garnish around the containers was browning. The fried chicken was cooked great, except they gave me two thighs instead of a breast, fries good as well. My wife's steak was obviously a frozen steak thawed and flapped on the grill. The thin part was med which is what she ordered, but the not much thicker part was raw. Her baked potato was undercooked, and the Mac n cheese was not only cold, but dry and flavorless. Obviously had been sitting on steam table too long. Now, the service however, was great. very nice, young lady. The whole staff was very nice. The restaurant was very clean. Chubby's is definitely a place for local, older generations that aren't as picky with their food. But don't expect to take a date there for a good meal. My husband and I came in for our Monday date day lunch and were excited to try out a local restaurant... the restaurant itself isn't anything special. No decor... just plain. Other than the anniversary balloons. The tables are packed with oversized bowls to accommodate massive amounts of creamer and whipped spread, leaving enough room for 2 plates on a 4 top. The "salad bar" for 3.99 is very disappointing. They have premixed iceberg lettuce blend, one jar of shredded cheese, one jar of tomatoes, some onions, broccoli, and your choice of dressing (that is the bulk dressing you can buy at Sams... nothing special there...). Next to the salad on the same bar was a blob of coleslaw, some potato salad, and what appeared to be cottage cheese... oh and Jello too... We also ordered the Mac n cheese bites, a French dip, and a chicken cheddar bacon. Nothing, including the French fries, was fresh. It was so disappointing... the au jus and French dip was bland, the bacon on the chicken was over microwaved and rubbery, the chicken patty itself was a bulk ordered pre-breaded and flash fried item, the French fries had zero taste to them, and the Mac n cheese bites were yet again another bulk order item that wasn't made fresh... I had such high expectations for somewhere that boasts to be home made "grammy's" cooking. It's sad... this restaurant has great potential... but was definitely a big let down... wish they would not put sliced processed cheese on my eggs but regular cheese. Some things are really good and others are fair to middlin. Had a steak and it was tough and chewy. Throwed rolls were actually hand delivered but I also was not in a mood to play catch so I was good with that one but if one wanted them thrown I am sure they would be happy to oblige.
