So disappointed in Chubby's Tacos - our neighborhood taqueria that moved to a bigger location did more than just move. Replacing the reasonable volume Mexican music with obnoxiously loud modern country music, losing all the cool Mexican artwork/photos for 8+ giant television screens showing sports, and then there was the TV playing Fox News right in front of me made for a most unappetizing experience. I don't think I can go back, it was so bad...the only reason I'm giving it two stars instead of one is because the food is still good. I have been connoisseur of taco trucks for a while, and I have lived in Nicaragua and visited latin america numerous times. I would rather go to a taco truck than go here. The food is bland and tasteless. It's just okay. It looks like a tasty taco, it just doesn't taste like one. I do like their salsa bar, those options were great, my Indian boyfriend loved the heat of the habanero salsa. Unfortunately, the tacos themselves aren't great. I also ordered a cup of queso, which I enjoy at regular Mexican restaurants, but this just tasted like velveeta and cream. Chubby's Tacos? or is it Guacamaya Fresh Mex. Not sure what they call themselves but when I'm in the mood for some Mexican food that's close to the house these people are my go to. I feel like Chubby's falls below the authentic stuff in North Durham but above in flavor and taste then say Los Portales and not as Americanized as Moe's. They stick to the basics, tacos, burritos, nachos etc... but they do them well. Lots of fillings to choose from with Spicy Carne Asada and Al Pastor being my favorites. They even show some love to the non-meat eaters by offering Tofu & Grilled Veggies, Sweet Potatoes and Portobello Mushrooms as options. Rice here is pretty standard and so are the beans but where these people really shine is their salsa bar. They have about 6-8 to choose from, there're all delicious and they bring some heat. Portions sizes are good and so are their prices for what you get. You can find a pretty accurate menu on-line as well as on-line ordering. We usually call in our orders for pick-up and we've never had a problem. Take note that these people are happy to make you what you want. I've called in some complex burrito requests and they say no problem and get it right every time. By no means gourmet but they get the job done with fresh, quality ingredients. If your new to the area and looking for a local Mexican take-out joint you should add these guys to your short list. read more

I've had the pleasure of eating at Chubby's a handful of times now. The tacos are excellent and the prices are very reasonable. The way the menu is set up, there's a fair amount of flexibility. The salsa bar is fantastic and has the hottest option I've seen at any place in the Triangle. I have only two negatives: 1. I'd like more cheese. On everything. 2. The space is small and can be noisy -- I always get mine to go and think I prefer it that way. I'm getting pretty hungry just thinking about it. Hope I can get back by there soon. read more

Finally, a place on this side of town to get fast REAL mexican food. I have friends that kept telling me, " you have to go to Chubby's", and I just kept putting it off. At last, a coupon appeared so I figure, time to try it. First off, this place is in a small strip mall that is known for great restaurants. W. 94th st pub, Pulcinella's italian, and Bandado's are all in this shopping center. Chubby's isn't much to look at but most of the best places like this aren't. It makes up for it with it's amazing food. I couldn't decide what to get so I decided to try a few different kinds of tacos( only $2 a piece), and that was way more than I could eat. These arent small like Moe's or taco bell. These were like the ones you get in a real mexican restaurant. While waiting for my order, I saw what appeared to be a man changing his baby on a table near by. At a closer look, I realized that it was a massive burrito. I can't wait to try one of those but it will have to wait until next time, 5 tacos on the way. Each taco was so big, it took 2 soft tortillas to hold everything in. They were also topped with fresh cilantro...nice touch. I also made it a combo and got a generous portion of beans and rice. Everything was GREAT! Today, there are so many options for burritos, tacos, ect, it's hard to decide. Most just settle for whats popular, like Moe's or Chipotle. If you like either of those places and live anywhere near the Southpoint area, I think you should give Chubby's a try. I bet you won't go back to Moe's or Chipotle again. I know I wont. read more

My first visit to Chubby's for a portabello mushroom burrito didn't wow me, but subsequent visits have slowly won me over. My favourite item on the menu is the ginormous tofu/veggie burrito that can easily be shared between two people and still leave both feeling ridiculously full. Fish tacos are pretty good as well, although in my opinion they are a little too liberal with the creamy white sauce. Great salsa and pico de gallo selection. This is the third Chubby's I've been to (what can I say, I'm a fan), and I have yet to be disappointed with the quality of the food or their unbeatable prices. The chubbychangas are also delicious, and I'm looking forward to trying the tortas on my next visit. Out of the range of salsas in the salsa bar, the guacatillo is to die for. The creaminess of avocados with the heat of chilis? MMmm. My only issue with this location is the sparse seating. During a busy lunch hour, it can be nearly impossible to find a place to enjoy your food. As many other reviewers have noticed, Chubby's has stepped it up! I decided to drop by for lunch on my way to Southpoint, and was immediately impressed by the spacious and modern interior. I ordered the spicy taco combo (chicken and carne azada), paid a reasonable price, and promptly received my meal outside on the AWESOME PATIO! The food was great, but in case you didn't catch it, I was most impressed by the AWESOME PATIO, complete with music and ample seating. The building is north-facing which means you get plenty of shade at all hours, and a nice breeze was blowing through. The interior is now appointed with a full bar, and I can definitely see some margarita specials (they should add this) in my future! This is my favorite place in North Carolina..the entire state. For $4.50 I get a burrito that feeds me for 2 days! I think what really makes this place are the homemade tortillas and the guacatillo sauce. I can't write a review on any other menu items but the burritos since they are amazing and the only thing I ever get. We stop here so often that they've started recognizing us..which is sort of sad because we live a good 20 minutes away. I love love love it! This rating isn't based on a single experience. I have been to this Chubby Tacos location at least once a month for the past year or two. It feels more local than the alternatives so I have really tried like it. First the good... the salsa bar is better than most we have here in Durham. The food overall is pretty good. Not amazing, but definitely good for the price. The bad... the service is pretty bad. We're not just talking about missing service with a smile, which is definitely missing. About half the time I order takeout from this location they get the order wrong. Most recently it was so bad I took it back and was greeted with an argumentative experience, a poor replacement burrito (smaller and still wrong the second time!) and offered nothing extra for the second trip. I would probably continue to put up with it if we didn't have a Moe's and a new Chipotle also down the street. Also, Bandidos across the parking lot is very well run and has better food. This is my new place to satisfy my taco cravings. Two tacos are the perfect getaway taco treat. I've tried out a few mexican places in the area and have been disappointed in the quality of the taco, but this place meets a good standard. Obviously, it's americanized but I don't care. If you want a taco, you're not craving real Mexican food anyway. This isn't a margarita joint, or a place you go to for happy hour on the patio with beers and tacos. It's a place to satisfy your taco (or other americanized mexican food) cravings. Eating in the restaurant is an option, but I did a grab and go home type deal. Another thing I was pleased with is the service. The staff was friendly, and although they're slower than taco bell, it was pretty fast. I'm fine with that, there's a reason taco bell sucks in my opinion... The extra time taken for the assembly of these tacos is worth the extra wait of a few minutes. read more

It's nice to see something with some staying power in this spot (I'm going to go pour a milkshake on the curb for Stuart's). I suggest you give this place a couple of weeks to let the crowd die down, and so they can work out some of their service/stocking issues. The food is better than your average "cheap Mexican," but bring your own spice (or use some of their condiments). If you plan to get tacos, you will need to order at least 2 or more (the pictures are a bit deceiving). If you like tacky, offensive t-shirts, buy one now before Warner Bros hits them with a cease and desist. read more

Sorry ... found it mediocre. Better than T-Bell or "Welcome to Moe's," which is weak praise. Ordered the Supreme Burrito. Tortilla tasted great, but it was huge and overwhelmed the ingredients. Carne Asada was OK, but they put lettuce in their burritos! Save lettuce for salads, unless you need to fill up a burrito to make it look "chubby." Rice and chips were unremarkable, refritos were pretty good. They were trying with the salsa bar, but I didn't find anything really interesting. Really hot is not always the same thing as really good. Service was good, and there was definitely a line of folks, so maybe just a bad experience. I'll head back again and try the tacos. read more

Can't believe the love affair some people have with this place. There is no arguing that you get a ton of food for your buck and you won't leave hungry. The salsa bar is muy bueno...points for that. But, apart from the salsa, the food quality is not great at all. I mean, if you think Bandidos or something when you think Mexican, then you'll probably do OK at Chubby's, but this is not first class fare by any stretch. You can only order what they decide you can have. So if you're like me and don't eat pork, it's too bad if you want a two chicken tinga taco combo, you're stuck with one carnitas (pork) taco.
