Taqueria La Vaquita is tiny meaning if you blink you will miss this gem on the corner. The gem is a larger trailer with two windows and menus on the outside detailing all the goodness they have going on inside. There is outside seating, but they have to go options as well. I decided to get three tacos with all beans and chips and salsa. The three tacos I got was the Pollo, al pastor, and beef. Wow!! The tacos are small, but pack a lot of flavor in each bite. The meat is grilled to perfection with the cilantro, cabbages, and onions making a great side appearance as well. The prices are a little up their in price compared to in Texas. I got the tripa, tongue taco and I can not recall the other one plate. It came with rice and beans. It does take awhile for you to get the food as I think we waited 20 minutes for our food. You can order ahead of time as well. The food was good, but it is something I can get here in Dallas. The grilled pineapples and jalapeños made the dish extra flavorful, and the portions overall were filling. Overall: We enjoyed our experience at Taqueria La Vaquita. I loved my tacos at La Vaquita, and I'd highly recommend this spot for tacos specifically. I was so excited to see chilaquiles on the menu that I immediately ordered chilaquiles in salsa verde with chicken, and they were good with a generous portion, but I am so glad I added a taco at the last minute to my order--the tacos al pastor were absolutely incredible! I lived in Mexico City for a couple of years so can be picky when I get Mexican food in the US, but the tacos at La Vaquita are the real deal! And it helps that the place is locally owned and the staff are attentive and friendly, going out of their way to be sure you are satisfied. The friends I went with nearly all got tacos, and they all looked delicious (including the vegetarian trio). They also got several orders of flan, which I had some tastes of and really enjoyed. But I must underscore again that it is the tacos at La Vaquita that are to die for. We frequent La Vaquita at least once every two weeks. This is our go-to Mexican spot. Coming from southern California where the Mexican food options are plentiful, I can say without a doubt that La Vaquita is one of the best in Durham area. (The only other place we like is La Club in North Durham). My favorite thing from them is the pastor tacos and birria tacos. The pastor flavor is just so good! The other meat that I really like is their lengua - it is super tender and melts in your mouth. The asada is good too but I don't think it is too special. Overall, the tacos are always loaded with meat and even just 3 is very filling. The taco plate comes with beans and rice, although weirdly the beans taste a bit different sometimes haha - not the most consistent item on their menu. I tried to be adventurous and tried their Barbacoa and chicken burrito recently (it's weird that on their menu you couldnt order just any meat in your burrito). Anyways, it was good but I didn't think it was amazing by any means - I would rather order their tacos. Their horchata is absolutely delicious and is my guilty pleasure. Covid has led me to trying this place and since, I've probably had it once a week. Their tacos are simple but delicious. And cheap!! You have your classic choices. Garnished with onion and cilantro. Their not too big or too small. My favorites are the Pastor and Carnitas. The fish and chorizo are good as well. Another hidden treat there is their tamales. I don't know why they're so good but they're addicting. They have pork and chicken. The chicken is BOMB. Also, don't sleep on their rice and beans. I could eat that rice with everything all day every day. Their salsas are also divine. Green and red are standard with red being spicier. "Off the menu" ask for their "oil salsa" - it is SUPER SPICY and Smokey and mmm thinking about it makes my mouth water. Highly highly recommend. We have nothing but positive things to see about our recent experience at Taqueria La Vaquita. This was some of the best Mexican food that we have had in the Triangle area, the portion sizes were large, and the horchata was delicious! We can't wait to eat here again. Below are out thoughts on the items that we ordered: 1. Shrimp tacos - Super flavorful and cooked to perfection. Whatever they were seasoned with (lime? fairy dust?) left us wanting more. 2. Chicken tamales - We ordered the plate, which came with 2 large tamales. They came wrapped in banana leaves. The chicken was beautifully spicy, just enough to be enjoyable. 3. Horchata - Cinnamon goodness and the perfect level of sweet. We would order all 3 items again. With regard to COVID, all ordering and pickup is done outdoors so risk of exposure is minimal. This place came highly recommended from a few of my classmates so I was excited to try. They have some tables outside for seating and colorful flags strung up for a festive vibe. The guy at the window was friendly and provided good service. I loved that they had options for vegetarian tacos. I got the ones with the peppers, onions, and mushroom sauté minus the cheese to make it vegan. The tacos were pretty basic and didn't have a ton of flavor in my opinion. I also got a side of plantains which came with a bunch of cheese on them, to my surprise. So I wasn't able to eat them, but they did appear appetizing and seemed to be cooked properly. Ordered take out from here and it did not disappoint! The tacos were full of toppings, nice big tacos and not to expensive. I would say the queso was one of the favorite parts of my meal. It's slightly spicy though, more so than I expected. The food came quickly through door dash, the tacos were hot but the queso had gotten a little cool but it was still delicious. I love the radishes that come on the side, it adds a freshness to the tacos. I haven't had a chance to actually go to the restaurant but I can't wait to go and try the tacos served up fresh. From what I tasted, I'd rather get a torta here than tacos. My partner's torta Cubana was pretty great. Unfortunately, the thin and limp tortillas had no chance of containing my pastor, chorizo, and lengua meat, and fell apart immediately upon picking them up. I ended up eating my whole dish with a fork, trying to get some tortilla pieces in with my meat, which varied a lot in how good it was. The lengua was well-textured (though not very flavorful), and the pastor had a great flavor, but the chorizo tasted like ground up nothing. The salsas, both mild and hot, tasted negative-spicy to me, and the rice and beans were similarly flavorless. If it weren't for delicious bites of that torta Cubana, I would have worried I was losing my taste and gotten tested for COVID. read more

This is the DEFINITION of hole in the wall - just pull up (and park in the small lot right in front) and see for yourself.
