I am all about supporting local restaurants during COVID, but my experience at Chubby's does not inspire me to go back any time soon. My family decided to get takeout for dinner, and we did so by using their online form to order ahead-- placed order before 3pm to pick up at 7pm. When we arrived at 7 we were made to wait an hour for our food. The restaurant did not prioritize scheduled orders over walk-ins, and people who walked in to order actually got their food faster than people who ordered ahead. I recently moved to the area and I'm going around the area trying all the taco spots. I'm from south Texas so it's easy to say my expectations are a big high to be honest. Chubby's was next on my list and overall my experience was good. I tried the Baja fish taco & spicy tinga chicken taco. The Baja fish is just a fried fish filet. It was (extremely) dry. I wasn't impressed at all. The slaw that it was topped with was good, full of flavor. I think it they were to use a more fresh grilled filet, this taco could be 100%. The spicy tinga chicken taco was spot on! It was perfect! Juicy Shredded chicken full of SO MUCH flavor! This made me happy! The open salsa bar is fantastic. I finally decided to try out Chubby's Taco for lunch and overall enjoyed it. The employee taking orders was friendly and I liked all the options available. I ended up going with the chorizo nachos. I thought the chorizo was great, but I expected nice cheesy nachos and it was mostly chorizo and not a ton of cheese. There was queso on top but not really throughout the nachos. I wouldn't go with the nachos again, I think the chorizo would be great in a taco though. My husband went with the carnitas quesadilla. He enjoyed it as well, just wish it was a bit more stuffed. I would definitely head back in for lunch soon and stick with tacos. The majority of the restaurant is counter service, but they do have a full service bar as well. read more

Google it out and you'll find that the owner had to ditch the name due to legal eagles swirling around. There is a new name, and some fancy shmancy new menu boards that are too complicated and busy to flip through with your eyeballs unless the line is long. (and trust me, the line will be long 'cause you have to read the whole thing to find your favorites these days.) So that's quite alright with me.Because my favorites are still there. And squeeze all the way to the back to get the assortment of little cups of yummy salsas and stuff. but don't forget, you have to ask for the dammned lids cause they are behind the counter. Its a nice place for grown ups to have Mexican bar food. I wouldn't consider too family friendly unless eating outside, but cool to watch the games. Their chips and salsa is delicious, ranging from very mild to very spicy (free refills on the chips is very important!). The food was great, but it could use some cleaning in their booths. Other than that I can't really complain. The young staff still took care of me and my party of 6. We all got our food in a timely manner with nothing wrong. Small divey restaurant in Raleigh. Amazing salsa bar with lots of choices. You are greeted with the menu upon arrival and order at the cash register up front. Tacos were delicious and served quickly. I've been here many times and will continue to frequent this establishment when I'm in town. It has expanded in size and now has a decent size bar. I visited Chubby's for the first time in awhile and was glad to see they expanded their restaurant space. There's now a full service bar with 4 TVs and ample seating. Unfortunately, it also looks like their prices increased as well. My three tacos came out to $10. It did take a little while to get the food out, but it tasted great when it arrived. I had a cup of guacamole to start, and it tasted very fresh. There huge chunks of bright green avocado and good portion of pico de gallo with a nice hint of lime. There was also a huge salsa bar at my disposal. I love the variety of very spicy salsa including habanero and arbol salsas. The house salsa tasted very fresh and the guacsalsa is good if you don't want to buy guacamole. For my dinner, I had the Baja fish, barbacoa, and al pastor tacos with corn tortillas. The tacos were a good size, not small at all. The Baja fish was great because the huge piece of nicely fried fish, slaw, and tasty mayo sauce. The barbacoa meat was shredded, but very moist and seasoned well. And the al pastor was chunks of pork with pineapple and a distinct cinnamon based seasoning. Overall, the three tacos I had were really filling and good to eat. I would recommend Chubby's and definitely come to try their tacos. read more

A 1-star dive; doesn't even deserve half a star! The lady who waited on us was rude and condescending (I wish that she had been wearing her name tag)! The tacos were just greasy & nasty with very little cheese. The ground beef was grisly, like it had ground-up bones in it! When I politely complained to the rude condescending waitress, she said, "You got what you ordered!" And, when I asked to speak to the Manager, she said that he wasn't there. I drove here from Cary because it came with 4+ stars, I couldn't have been more disappointed. I have lived in Texas for many years where apparently they know how how to prepare Mexican food. Probably the proximity to the border. The carnitas alsada which is supposed to be spicy was dry, chewy and unpalatable, absolutely no spice. The spice chicken at least had the right texture, but lacked flavor. Black beans were acceptable, rice was dry and lacked any seasoning. Atmosphere was fine. Overall a big thumbs down. This place comes highly recommended, but I think it must be by people who haven't tried many taco spots. The tortillas were really dry and they serve tacos in one tortilla instead of the traditional two shells. This was actually a blessing given how bad they were. The meat was also overcooked. Still edible, but almost any taco truck on the side of the road will offer equal or better quality. They do offer a decent selection of salsas to try so if that is your thing then you maybe enjoy it more than me. The place was empty so service was quick, but the emptiness seemed common and the staff had some friends hanging out there making a decent bit of noise. It's been years since we'd been to Chubby's but we stopped tonight before heading to the airport. We ordered tacos and burritos. The Baja Fish Taco was ok but it was tiny. The Chicken Tinga Burrito was huge but it was bland at best. It was stuffed with rice almost to the exclusion of anything else and it just had a preservative sort of flavor throughout. The salsas were ok but not enough to make the burrito more appealing. Mexican food ingredients have such good natural flavor but I found none of that here. I wanted to give them at least a 2 but given I barely got halfway through my meal, I just couldn't. For what it is, I really really enjoyed it. I've been looking for a good Mexican place, as most close to NC State's campus are very mediocre, at best. We went around two on a Saturday and it wasn't very busy as it was after the lunch rush. You walk up and order, give them your name and they give you chips. There is a salsa bar by the drink machine with many different kinds of salsas and various heat levels. I'm a big fan of this. I got a chicken fajita burrito which had grilled chicken, rice, beans, cheese, lettuce, peppers and onions. This burrito was HUGE. I was pleasantly surprised and it was delicious. I was very satisfied. Everyone else with me got quesadillas, and although they didn't look huge, everyone said they were tasty. I will say the sour cream was a little watered down/kind of milky if that makes sense. It was relatively inexpensive too. I enjoyed my burrito and chips and salsa. The older I get the better I was.... Unfortunately I can not say the same for Chubby's! This used to be one of the best places in town for moderately priced and excellent food with huge portions. And the service was great and welcoming too. Coming from California I was really happy to find a great place for good quality Mexican food. It was my go to place when craving some back home style Mexican food. Used to go to Durham location all the time too and it was very consistent as well. Fast forward a few years and now they have expanded, raised their prices, got rid of the good workers. The food is also lousy and you can get the same type at a corporate chain like Chuys or on the border. It has also gotten much dirtier as well. Maybe they have sold it? They definitely have sold out. Now it's just bad food and too expensive as well. $9.00 for a crappy burrito.... not again! Adios Chubby, I'll miss you, but the taco trucks around town should be able to fill the taco sized gap in my stomach until I find the next good place. So many good reviews so I was excited to try this place. My wife and I shared loaded chicken nachos and if you look at the picture you can see that the chicken was beyond dry. So disappointing. We were there around noon on a Saturday so I wouldn't think it would be leftover but it must've been. I seriously don't understand why a restaurant would serve that. Just throw that chicken away instead of trying to save some money by serving it. You should want to put out your best every time, but unfortunately this wasn't it. Oh Chubby's, you have delicious tacos and I wish they were more reasonably priced, so I can get more of them and come back more often. I finally got the courage to try the portabella mushroom taco. Every time I go I look at the price and think I should just get a meat taco, but I had a dire mushroom craving and went for it. It was perfect. The flavor was great and it had a smorgasbord of mushroom (well as much as you can have on one little taco). I will definitely get that taco again. I really like the flavors of Chubby's tacos. My concern is that the tacos are small and expensive. This means that unless I want a light meal (which is rarely the case), I need to order an abundance of tacos and then I start thinking that at that price, I can just go to some other place and that is usually what happens. When I finally make it to Chubby's, I always think that I should come here more often. I really like the authentic Mexican two-layer corn soft taco shells they use. The salsa bar is also pretty great; nice selection, good taste, and it has sliced jalapeños. When you order a taco it comes with a few complementary tortilla chips but not a lot. If you're looking for a lot of food for not a lot of money, then this is the place to go. The size of their burritos rival Chipotle, but for a significant drop in the price. Not to mention, you also get free chips and a wide selection at their salsa bar (the guacatillo and house salsa are my favorites). There is a more varied selection of filling for your tacos, burritos, or quesadillas than your typical burrito go-to, with meats such as al pastor (my personal favorite), barbacoa, carnitas, and more. And if you get multiple tacos, then you can experience a lot of those different flavors in one meal. Sounds like a winner to me. This time I decided to try a quesadilla filled with al pastor. It was very good, but I prefer the variety I can get with the tacos. If you plan to come for a burrito, make sure you are HUNGRY. The burritos are huge and they are also filled with refried beans which fill me up very quickly. While the ingredients don't taste as fresh as what you would get at Chipotle, it is equally filling and still some solid tasty food. I give the food a solid 4 stars. During the normal dinner rush, Chubby's can get full fast and it can be hard to find a seat, partially due to their small dining and room and partially because their food is just that good. It can get cramped inside, especially in the aisle from the cashier to the salsa bar, but don't let that stop you. They do have outdoor seating, where they have a performer, which is nice when it is warmer outside. They also get an A+ for service. Ordering goes by quickly and our food came out before we even finished getting all of our salsas from the bar. Good service. Good food. Good prices. Done. read more

Chubby's is absolutely, hands down, the best Mexican I've had in Raleigh - and that's coming from an ex-Texan! Your choice of meat (or mushrooms, fish, etc) comes on fresh corn tortillas, covered in fresh chopped onions and cilantro. My boyfriend swears by the Tinga (spiced chicken) but I prefer the Barbacoa (spiced beef) as my personal go-to guilty delight. The burritos are truly as 'big as your face' and packed with rice, beans, etc. The margaritas are sufficiently alcoholic and don't have the 'common margarita problem' of tasting like they're from a mix. And the sauces...oh, the sauces... Every base is covered - spicy, smokey, smooth and refreshing. Drizzle them on top of your taco or mix into the gooey queso dip for an extra kick. The only criticism I can make is that I wish they had less rice in the burritos and I wish the place was bigger. HINT: Come on off hours between lunch and dinner crowds to get the freshest salsa and quickest service. It's not uncommon for there to be a 30 min. wait to order at peak hours! Wow where shall I start? I have so much I want to say about this place. The BAD: Ok lets start with location: It is hidden in the middle of a sketchy looking strip mall with all kinds of people roaming the parking lot. So take a knife or some mace just in case and go during the daytime maybe. The "Al Pastor" is not great, but it is good--- I guess my expectations are unrealistic for the U.S. I just want Al Pastor on a spit with the correct seasonings I just can't find it. The GOOD: The tortillas are real. What I mean by that is I grew up in Mexico and the corn tortillas here are absolutely as good as any I have ever had. The Guacatillo sauce is really good. The chips are good and fresh. The rice and re-fried beans are good and it is a good idea to add the beans, rice and chips to your meal for a very small cost. The plate in front of me had 2 tacos al pastor with cilantro and onions, re-fried beans and rice and chips for $6. It was more than I could eat, I had to give one taco to the husband. The place is long and narrow inside so I would hate to be there when it is crowded. The salsa bar is at the back behind the row of booths so unless the husband had not gone to the restroom I would have never known it was there. Check out the habanero sauce and the Guacatillo they are really good. I am looking forward to a few more trips to Raleigh and trying the Tortas and gorditas. I would suggest the shredded beef or the carnitas . Bottom line GO TRY IT!!!! Just don't get mad at me if you get mugged in the parking lot. read more
