Wow! The food here is exceptional. I had a #7 - a cheese enchilada and a beef tostada with refried beans and rice. This was the best enchilada I have ever had amongst the hundreds I have eaten. The sauce is a vibrant orange color - unlike the usual red or brown sauces which tend to be bitter. The corn tortilla was soft and filled with a flavorful cheese. The beef tostada was served on a crisp tortilla with a generous portion of ground beef, lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese. The refried beans were perfect as was the rice. My wife had a chile releano that was as soft as a pillow. The tortilla chips were freshly made, nice and crisp and served with a flavorful salsa and small plate of refried beans for dipping. The restaurant is spotlessly clean (including the restroom). Service from Irma was very attentive. Just sorry we didn't have more time to sample the rest of the menu. Highly recommended. read more

I've only tried one thing on the menu here and unfortunately didn't take a picture, but I was happy with my meal. The restaurant is kinda loud playing music, and is set up with standard restaurant tables and chairs. I ordered at the front & they had a special for $8 of 4 tacos which I got of shredded pork. I went and grabbed a bowl of salsa which you put your own chili in. The chili is super spicy btw so only use a little and also, I grabbed a bowl of beans for free! The tacos were amazing! I loved how the meat wasn't dry, but wasn't juicy in my taco. That always makes tortillas soggy. They were served on corn tortillas with onion, cilantro, and I got cabbage. Such great flavor, and they were nice and warm, plus they were presented nicely. Someone took an extra minute to nicely prep my tacos not just throw everything in a tortilla. I was very impressed and will be back to try more things next time I'm in Salem. read more

Chula Vista was very delicious and accommodating for my friend's rehearsal dinner. The food was fresh, hot, and all came out at around the same time. The drinks were delicious, strong, and very large! Chips, salsa, and bean dip were also delivered to each table. Service was prompt but not obtrusive, and very welcoming and kind. We were pleasantly surprised upon walking into Chula Vista Restaurant. From the murals on the wall, to the booths, candy display, and the kindness of our waitress. We initially we're going to I HOPE on. Saturday but it was a line of like 20 people so we headed toward home, and then my husband turned into Chula Vista parking lot. He knows I'm always down for Mexican food and he pretty much will eat anything. They had a fairly large menu from appetizers, to full entrees, to American food, and even a decent array of desserts. I got cheese enchiladas and he got a burger combo. As with most Mexican restaurants, we were served chips and salsa, however they also brought beans to dip. The beans were good and didn't taste canned. That's a plus. Overall, we enjoyed our visit to Chula Vista and will be back. read more

This place may feature a lot of variety, but there is nothing that sticks out about this restaurant that is worth mentioning. The prices, the food, the service, the decor, and the intangibles are all so typical that the only thing different about the restaurant is its name. The location itself is marred by the fact there is a barrier in the middle of State street, prevents people from driving to the parking lot. The service was okay and the prices were roughly the same, which there is nothing unique about it (no deals, service not exceptional). This a small and humble family owned restaurant that is our go to for Mexican style. The service is familial, attentive and pleasant. I had a hard time with a 4 star but it is exactly what they intend it to be, a simple place. I didn't try the bathrooms but the salsa and plate of refries chopped cabbage abdomens nice n spicy salsa. Too bad the chips were right out of a bag and room temp. I wonder how hard it is to make fresh ones. That would make a 4 as would home made tortillas. I got the Chile rellano and shredded beef enchilada with rice and beans. I like the rellano here because it seems freshly cooked just as everything else was. This is very distinctive Guanajuato regional cuisine, and I think this venue is best suited for foodies who are interested in the regional cuisines of Mexico. As always, this restaurant has exceptional food. It tastes like I made it at home. Previously they had a lunch menu, but now it's a lunch special on the board. This was somewhat disappointing, because I usually don't each lunch, and prefer a smaller portion. The best beans and rice in Salem and very authentic. We went on a Friday afternoon and were greeted by a very friendly waitress who seated us near the window. The place was very clean and comfortable, and the food was brought out very quickly. Both meals were amazing, my tortillas were obviously homemade and our meats were cooked to perfection. One of the few times I actually had to wait due to everything being so hot, including the tortillas. We will definitely be going back for more. Let me start off by stating that the food was average. And I would say that at the time of our visit, the service was very good. The reason for the negative review is that Chula Vista would not honor the Restaurant.com coupon that I purchased. The waitress told me that "they" (meaning management and/or owners) had decided not to honor the coupons because they were outdated. Guess what? These coupons have NO EXPIRATION DATE. That means they have to honor them ( I even verified this with Restaurant.com). These coupons act as a good faith contract. I buy a coupon, you honor it. Pretty simple really. So a friend helped me out by calling the restaurant repeatedly to speak the the owner or manager, Jesus, about the issue. She was never able to reach him, even when he was supposed to be there...not very Christlike. Maybe he should change his name to Judas? She then took up the issue with Restaurant.com via several emails and finally was able to get that organization to reimburse me for the full value of the coupon. What a great friend! So the long and short of it is this: if you like average Mexican food and don't have any coupons, dine at your own risk. If you like excellent Mexican food and have any type of coupon, think twice. There are lots of great Mexican restaurants around the area that would be happy to have your business. Support them! read more

I squeezed as many limes as I could and even put salt on them and that didn't really even help. I have had way better .99 tacos. It is close, used to be a CHINESE restaurant when I was working for HIGHWAY and I did not realize when it reopened as MEXICAN. My girlfriend suggested it recently and we go back monthly or more. Service is quick and friendly, food is hot and tasty, not cheap but worth it, for sure. Oh, I suspect I'll order something I won't like as well but asking questions and looking at the photos of the various dishes, I should not make too many mistakes and if I do not like something it will probably just be me, not the food itself. We returned to our fav mexican restaurant after a 12 year hiatus. We were extremely disappointed and will not be returning. We had chicken fajitas and the whole meal, product was offensive and disgusting. The waitress brought out a plate of raw onions, barely cooked, about 12 pieces of red and green pepper and some sliced chicken laid on top of the vegetables. The chicken obviously was cooked off earlier, it was luke warm, dry and tough, I could barely chew it. The vegetables were not cooked sufficiently, they were not cooked at all really, no carmelization whatsoever! The flavor was good but it just wasn't a well put together dish. I can not imagine a place resorting to this kind of bullshit when preparing a dinner for someone. I would be embarrassed to serve this. My family and I always come here for Tacos! Whether to dine in or to go. They are always delicious and very filling. The flavors of the salsa are perfect and always spicy.
