Mexican food in Oregon, especially in Salem, is some of the best in the state if not some of the best out west. For a small city that is home to a sizeable Mexican community, the food options are as divey as they are impressive, with the perfect prices for all working class patrons, and strictly visited by the community it supports. There is no better taco cart right now than La Carretta de Mi Tierra, i.e. "The Cart of my Land." Situated in a parking lot that is shared with the Gavin Food's convenience store, this gem sits beneath a tent like tarp where a family of 4-5 prep quality tacos throughout the evening. Someone will take your order, while someone else is simultaneously cooking your food on the grill, as someone else will pass along freshly made tortillas hot off the impression mold. After a douse of fixins along the counter, which you do apply yourself, it was time for the taste test. A juicy, delectable bite of their carnitas taco, and I was hooked. The softness of the homemade tortilla practically melted with the meat and the tanginess of the accompanying salsas left my tastebuds wanting more. Best of all, each taco was only $1.50. Another taco, the same foodgasmic-eyerolling-mouth-steaming reaction, only this time it was an incredibly tasty lengua (cow tongue). The meat was like butter, which means the lengua was cooked perfectly. Even the chorizo and asada tacos were beyond bomb - they straight up delicious. When the impression from the taste still lingers to this day, it means the juicy food was worth it. The late night crowd will almost always be completely Mexican. As the only Chinito of the bunch, I managed to get away with blending in the crowd as I ferociously devoured all of my food. I am not saying there will be any gringo stigma, but be prepared to stand out, especially if you're not a Spanish speaker. While I'm sure English would be just fine, I can't truly vouch for it because I haven't seen it done before. Just let the bills do the talking, as this spot is strictly cash only. There isn't much in Salem that I can truly look forward to on a food front, but after experiencing multiple highs on their delicious home cooked tacos, this little carreta is definitely part of mi tierra and mi corazon. I'm proud to write about this in review #2300 and can't wait to go back to experience it all over again.

Tacos: 2 Lengua, 2 Tripa (extra crispy) and 1 Pastor with a Agua de Piña.

Greasy al pastor, and dry carne asada. I was expecting good tacos, what a let down. Hopefully it was just a bad night for them.

So of the many delicious options I went with the machaca burrito and hands down this is one of the best ones I've ever had as the burrito was served to me super hot like soo hot I couldn't even eat it for a minute which is something I love to see from the start, and let me say that flavor of the meat with the eggs, jalapeno, and tomato's was spot on like just soo good to the point it took me back in the Rolodex of memories to my favorite place to get these burrito's and that never happens! If they weren't enough they had an awesome salsa bar with some delicious salsas all of which were good like really good and just added soo much to an already delicious machaca burrito! Also at the salsa bar they had a pot with whole grilled jalapeños and onions inside and I must say this is always a nice touch when restaurants do this as it adds soo much more to whatever your enjoying! The lady working was nice the place was chill and clean and they had a drive thru and a claw machine it doesn't get any better than this! Overall I wish I lived closer to here as I would seriously go here all the time as my burrito was that good, with that said who knows if I'll get back here again but let's just say it's definitely not out of the question should I get to.

A Tacos Trip!…read more The Carnitas Tacos Let me taco 'bout the carnitas tacos--these bad boys are the real fiesta in a fresh corn tortilla! As a globe-trotting, México-born taco connoisseur, I can confirm the deliciousness of these carnitas, each bite had us saying, "¡Ay, mamacita!" They're tender, juicy, and bursting with flavor--so much so that you might start dancing around the super nice salsa bar in the restaurant with your taco plate in hand. If these tacos were any more loaded, they'd need their own passport stamps! The Environment Axel's Taco Shop is a vibrant, quirky corner of México right here in Salem, OR. The walls are adorned with colorful murals and beyond that, the staff makes it even better--think "Taco 'bout a party!"--that make the atmosphere as festive as a street carnival. Whether you're on a quick lunch run or planning a full-on taco marathon that includes buñuelos, the ambience here is as refreshing as a chilled cerveza Corona on a sunny August afternoon. Amazing Service! Now, let's address the real twist in this tale: our dear Axel--the brilliant college student who, by a hilarious twist of fate, shares his name with this taquería. Axel doesn't work here, doesn't own the place, it's just destiny that brought us together. The staff served up friendly, attentive service that made our visit as memorable as Axel's quirky college antics. Thanks to his accidental nudge, our culinary journey turned into a full-blown fiesta! In short, if you're roaming Salem or on your way to-from Corvallis and Portland, with a hankering for killer carnitas tacos and a side of laughter, Axel's Taco Shop is your destination. Grab a taco, toast with some horchata or jamaica drinks, and enjoy the ride--while giving a nod to our namesake hero, Axel, for the unforgettable referral!
