I have been lucky enough to only have positive experiences here, so given the reviews, it's likely a place where mixed experiences are possible. Personally, I would say that would be due to the customers, since the staff I have met are incredible. We were lucky to get a proper patio table on the Friday of Pride, and our lovely Turkish server (I am sorry, I forgot your name) started us off strong. We really enjoyed her sassy energy and conversation for our pre-drink moment at Garage. We settled on a few pitchers of Aperol Spritz, which was definitely a good gay call for the night. Our server was very present, and even brought us some shots! TY! The food is quite mid, so if you are starving, I would suggest eating elsewhere before or after. We settled on quesadillas, which were soft and not very cooked. I know that expecting good Mexican cuisine in Toronto can be hard, but, please do better! Fry those tortillas for a few more minutes, and future reviews will be perfect. We were surprised with the cost of drinks, but this was absolutely due to Pride events, so I would not hold this against the business. It had been a while since my last visit to Garage, mainly because my previous experience wasn't great. Even with their Tuesday wing and taco specials, it just never made it back into the rotation. This time, we ended up here unexpectedly after our usual wing spot stopped offering their special, and I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. We got there around 8:30 and the overall experience felt noticeably improved. The food was better across the board, both in taste and presentation. Everything felt more substantial and a bit more thought out compared to what I remembered. The wings in particular were a big upgrade. They're no longer served in those plastic baskets, and even the sides felt more elevated. Instead of the usual big orange carrot sticks, they came with sliced, multi-coloured carrots. Small detail, but it made a difference. The calamari also felt more refined, with sprouts and garnishes that made it feel less like a basic bar dish. Service has never really been an issue here, but this time our server stood out. They were very accommodating with modifications, mindful of allergies, and helpful with recommendations. Overall, it feels like Garage has stepped things up. Between the improved food and solid service, I wouldn't hesitate to come back. With our usual wing spot no longer doing their special, this might end up being our new go-to. read more

We visited Garage on Church Street during Pride and completely understood that it was an exceptionally busy weekend. We expected longer wait times and were more than willing to be patient. Unfortunately, after about an hour, we noticed that many tables around us--who had arrived after we did--were receiving their meals while we still hadn't received ours. Our server rarely checked in with us, and no one gave us an update or explanation. After waiting approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes, I finally got up and spoke with the manager to ask where our food was. We were then told that our order chit had been lost. While I appreciate the honesty, no one had come to our table to explain what had happened, apologize, or even retake our order. We were simply left waiting without any communication. When our food finally arrived, it was cold. I sent it back and never ended up eating. The restaurant removed my meal from the bill, which was appropriate since I never received an edible meal. However, after my friends had eaten cold food, I had waited almost two and a half hours without a meal, and I still had to pay for all three beers I drank while sitting there waiting. After everything that happened, the restaurant only reduced our bill by an additional $6. That was an incredibly disappointing way to resolve the situation. What makes this even more frustrating is that we were only in Toronto for Pride that evening. We had just a few hours to enjoy the festivities before we had to head home, and spending almost our entire evening sitting in a restaurant waiting for food that never properly arrived completely put a damper on what should have been a fun celebration. Mistakes happen, especially during a major event like Pride. What disappointed me most wasn't that an error occurred--it was the complete lack of communication and accountability. A simple apology and regular updates would have gone a long way. This was one of the worst restaurant experiences I've had. We were left sitting for hours wondering what was happening, only to find out our order had been lost. The minimal compensation after such a significant service failure was unacceptable. Shame on this restaurant for how this was handled. Unfortunately, I won't be returning, and I am considering filing a formal complaint as I don't believe this situation was handled appropriately. read more

Toronto's gay section is not very large as compared to Montreal. It's basically 304 blocks right on Church...so like last time, we ended up at Garage for drinks and a bite to eat. The patio outside is really welcoming, with a long section overlooking the street, which makes it for nice people-watching. We gto some beers and a half order of nachos ($CDN 15). The nachos were actually really big and they were oven baked, which is my favorite way to get them. The food was good and the service was also very prompt A staple in the area. read more

Where does one find a suitable breakfast/brunch spot with a patio, that also happens to be open for business on the Monday of a long weekend? Well, Church Street Garage obviously. We stopped in here this morning for some brunch and we were not disappointed, unlike the disappointment we felt after discovering that the spot we wanted to brunch at was closed...seemed to be an ongoing theme for us over the long weekend. Anyway, after we were seated on the patio, our server was quick to bring us our coffee, mugs are huge by the way. Coffee was good, and that's always a good sign. I ordered the peameal bacon eggs benedict for $9 and my friend had the Garage Classique Breakfast (2 eggs, with home fries and bacon for $10). Both were cooked perfectly. The poached eggs delicious and the Hollandaise sauce rocked. Now, I don't normally like home fries, however, I was pleasantly surprised at how good they were. Probably the best home fries I've had in a long time. I know that my dinning companion enjoyed her poached eggs, and commented specifically that they were cooked perfectly and that the bacon was 'awesome'. I love patio, there are plenty of umbrellas if you prefer the shade and the tables are not jammed together so it's quite roomy. The flower boxes along the outside of the patio are also a nice touch. Will definitely be returning. This place will be on my regular brunch rotation from now on! read more

Now we're talking! Great service, fantastic conversation, friendly people, outdoor seating, and karaoke until 2AM! Exactly what could be better than this??? As I was walking past, some guests came out of Church St Garage for a smoke, and one of the people in the group said that it was his birthday. Not being the rude sort, I slowed down enough to wish him happy birthday and started off again. Then I heard the karaoke....not great karaoke, not awful karaoke....just karaoke. I was sold, inside I went. While here at Church St. Garage, I found interesting conversation with all type and walks of people, including the 70+ year old lady that was the Karaoke winner of the evening! It was a seriously fun evening, I'd go back in a heartbeat. The service was great, the atmosphere perfect for a place like this. And....I won 3rd place in the Karaoke contest..so obviously they have taste in judging these type of things as well! read more

First of all, I did the Yelp check in for a free soup and the waiter claimed that the owner and manager have never seen it before and cannot honor it, despite another yelper redeeming it 4 days ago! Fail! Service is terrible. We waited 5 mins and when no one came, I had to go up to the bar and asked to be served. The food took 1/2 hour to come. We ordered chicken and waffles and a Brie and pear burger. Both were overpriced and awful. The waffles and chicken was $15. The waffles were cold and chicken was dry. The burger was $14, but there was hardly any Brie and it wasn't even melted on as the menu claimed it would be. The pear slices looked old and tasted flavourless. The presentation of the food was nice, but it was deceiving because it tasted awful. Honestly, we contemplated just leaving throughout the wait for our food. My regret is that we didn't and ended up paying $35 for a painful meal. The only thing that was good was the music and we sat right near the window and people watched. By the way, the table was dirty and the washroom was smelly. There was a track of the last time someone cleaned the bathroom and that was on August 27th, 2 days ago. I guess washrooms don't need to be cleaned on weekends. This place is a disgrace. Never been so disappointed. Let's hope I don't get diarrhea tonight! read more

This building has been various incarnations over the last several years, the latest being the Church Street Garage. The food was good, but the server we had was about as personable as a used piece of chewing gum. The place was less than half full at dinner time on Saturday night (we are here on August 22, 2015). There are similar establishments on the same intersection of Church Street. They were full. We had already dined at the others and thought we'd give this one a try. As I said before, the food was good, and probably as good as the other establishments. But I could see the reason why business was slower here: the wait staff, and the overall service and cleanliness. Our table was dirty when we walked in, and we asked to have it cleaned before being seated. The server made excuses for it and although she did wipe the table, it was almost as if she were doing us a favor. We ordered a pitcher of Sangria, which was good, but when we sent back one of the glasses because it was dirty, we got the same put-out reaction from the server. This really dampened our enthusiasm for the place. We probably will not go back. read more

We stumbled into the Church St. Garage to escape the snow - fortunately they had room for us, considering we had completely forgotten that it was Katy Perry concert night - err, the Superbowl. They have a great sized menu and I couldn't believe the deals they had for Superbowl Night - a pound of wings and a pint for $10?? It doesn't get better than that! UNFORTUNATELY, I'm trying to be healthy and wings weren't going to cut it. There was a lot to choose from but I gave into my cravings and went with the classic Caesar salad, and started with nachos for the table (uh, that's healthy, right?). It was a super busy night and I'd definitely be interested in going back on a non-major sporting event night. Since we weren't interested in the game, the sound was a little overwhelming, but really what else could we expect for the big game. Our server told us that one of the kitchen staff had not shown up and so things were a bit slower than usual. They did a great job of keeping us aware of our food situation and the server was really great. She was also the only server on that night (seems like a bad call on such a big pub night, but she still did well!). I get the impression that this is more of a brunch or breakfast and beers joint than anything else because we arrived at noon and they weren't serving lunch yet. Eventually we were able to order lunch, and I ordered the pulled pork pizza, but they gave me a pulled pork burger. The server was great and I did eventually get my pizza, but it was nothing too remarkable. This gets two stars only because of the good service and decent patio. Stopped in this evening and ordered the pulled pork sandwich. After a few minutes the waitress comes back and says they're out of pulled pork (at 5:30); so I ordered the Philly Cheese Steak. When it came this sandwich was on a bun just a tad bit bigger than a hot dog bun, the cheese resembled processed; and the meat was so tough I had to cut it before attempting to eat it. My waitress was friendly and apologized. When she told the cook that the steak was tough his reply was that was how he always made that sandwich. When she brought my bill she said she asked if she could give me a discount; but that the cook was "really rude" and said no. This is the first review I've every written and I'm not usually one to complain; but this meal really called for me to do so. read more

very disappointing meal. after waiting 45 minutes for my food it was terrible. The waiter was nice and kept coming up with excuses as to why I had to wait so long but in the end it wasn't woth the wait. I ordered the country fried chicken and couldn't eat the batter on they had put on the chicken. I scraped the batter off the first of 2 pieces and couldn't be bothered on the second. just ate my fries. even though I ate less than half of the food on my plate and I had to wait over 45 minuted for it they still charged me full price for it. It will be a long time before I go back there and won't recommend the place to anybody. It won't bother them as they will always get street traffic. Too bad. it could be a nice place. Absolutely ridiculous that you won't let someone order a glass of water with their meal in 27 degree heat, saying you only have bottled water (at $4 a bottle). Yes, it's busy, but claiming you need to 'maximize the servers' time' is disrespectful to your customers. I won't be coming back given you're resorting to these measures. Update: The manager of Church St. Garage contacted me after posting this review. After explaining my experience in more detail he said that he has now told his servers if a customer asks for water to give them tap water and that they'll be having a meeting after Pride is done to clear these things up. I appreciate that they've taken these steps and hopefully these issues will be cleared up, as I do want to continue to support business in the Village at all times of the year. read more

Horrible food. I don't know if the kitchen has a new cook but my food was bad on two occasions. The last time I went (today) my pasta sauce was a bit off, as in spoiled and the pasta was dry . I hope they get it together. Not only that but my food took forever to get to me, and it was bland. And no one else was ordering so I was left wondering what was going on. Im actually really disappointed my oringial review was removed. So here let's try this again. My father was mistreated at this restaurant being asked to prepay for his single beer unlike anyone else at the restaurant. When he did not want to prepay for his beer because others were not doing the same, he was asked to keep his credit card at the bar.. FOR ONE BEER! He is actually so kind and felt so awkward about it, he let them take his credit card and after his drink he paid then left.. My quarrel is with WHY he was asked to do this. My father is clearly hispanic with an accent but speaks English well enough to understand that this was not asked of anyone else sitting at the restaurant as they were all running tabs. I am surprised they decided to treat him this way considering another restaurant was sued and forced to pay 10,000 dollars for almost doing the exact same thing. I will never go to this restaurant - a place that should be inclusive and welcoming considering the community it is situated in. Shame on the server, and the restaurant if they allowed this behaviour to happen without consequence. Quick summary: Great service, cold beer but overpriced, disappointing food. The Garage has one of the the best patios in the area. Their beer is always cold and the servers are always friendly and smiling. The patio has plenty of seating and they even have a live DJ sometimes! Tonight was the first time that I've eaten there and I was a little disappointed. The server seemed very enthusiastic about their food so I tried the chicken wings. $12 for a pound - not bad, or so I thought. When my food arrived, the portion seemed very small and the wings were nothing special - very small with not a lot of meat, and the sauce was too watery. My friend had the steak sandwich ($18) which was apparently very good, so perhaps their other selections are better. Overall, a beer and a soda water along with two mains came to $50 PLUS tip which seemed expensive for what we got to be honest. I was walking through the Village when I realized that I hadn't eaten lunch yet. I began scouring the streets for a likely-looking establishment. What ho? The Church St. Garage? Lots of people happily munching on the patio (well, on the patio, munching - not munching ON THE PATIO!) This looks promising! So in I stopped! I was greeted by a smiling staff member who told me to have a seat anywhere I liked. I chose a spot at the front with a view of Church St, but sadly the sheer number of wasps drove me further into the restaurant. Kudos to the serving staff, by the way, for being absolutely fine with that! I ordered a Caesar salad, to which my waiter ably upsold me a grilled chicken breast. While I waited, I chatted with another waiter for a bit - I have to say, the staff here is very friendly - and then the food arrived! The salad was well-presented, and the chicken looked like it was cooked thoroughly and well-seasoned. I found the salad to be tasty and well-dressed, but it was let down a bit by the chicken, which was somewhat dry, and not nearly as flavorful as the seasoned appearance led me to believe it would be. Service-wise, the staff, as I mentioned before, are very friendly (my waiter used the old waiter trick of touching my shoulder and back while offering service, and used "pet names" like "hon" and "darling" - this was a charming touch which made me feel very welcome, even though I know perfectly well that these tricks are primarily used to increase tip size. When executed this well, though, who cares? It made me feel good!) My one minor issue with the service is that the staffing levels seemed light for the amount of business they were doing, so the service was a bit slower than I would have otherwise expected. All in all, though, despite the wasps, the slight poultry-related letdown, and the questionable decision to allow smoking on their patio (if the wind is blowing toward the restaurant, EVERYONE is smoking, whee!) I would return to the Church St. Garage when in the Wellesley Village. read more
