Yesterday after work I met a friend of mine at The Rhino; it was my first visit to the venue in almost 2 years and appearance wise not much has changed. The area in the far back right hand side appears to have been re-organized somewhat; the two pool tables have been moved back and there is now considerably less seating in that area. My friend and I sat in between there and the front entrance, at the top of the short stairway. I arrived shortly before 6 pm when the large front room/area was fairly crowded and it stayed that way for the duration of our visit, which was about 1 1/2 hours. Although The Rhino has had a past reputation for having both slow service (unless you order at the bar) and an outdated beer menu (I'm referring mainly to their draft choices), during this visit service wasn't too slow considering how many other customers were there and the 3 beers my friend and I chose to share were all available. We quite enjoyed them - 2 dark beers and a lighter one - and it's nice to see that The Rhino has yet to falter in providing a wide variety of quality beer selections. I trust another 2 years will not go by before I make my next visit. read more

Whenever I fly through Toronto, I meet a friend in Parkdale for lunch. This is the third time we've done this, and no more. I pay for quality product and service when I go out to eat, I don't pay for the miserable attitude and negativity. Another 20% tip to be treated with contempt. read more

I came here to watch the first game of the NBA finals, and while the game was a SLAM DUNK, the food, drinks, and service were a miss. In terms of service, my friend and I were not greeted when we walked in. Granted, the restaurant was super busy. There wasn't even a "wait to be seated" or "seat yourself" sign. We were essentially ignored for at least 10 minutes until we found a server, who basically told us to sit wherever we could find a seat. Not the best first impression. The server that ended up taking our table was pretty decent. She checked on us regularly and was prompt with food, drinks, and the bill. For food, we shared a plate of nachos. They were good for stress eating, but also veeeeeeeeery messy. (Sorry to whoever had to clean up the tomato chunks). It wasn't really worth $18. For drinks, my friend enjoyed her Früli, and I liked my raspberry cider, but the house ale was not enjoyable. It was super bitter. Not one to waste alcohol, I choked it all down. Really cute open patio area right next to the street. They have a nice selection of beers and decent snacks. Their sweet potato fries are really good. Masks on before you walk through the door and a hand sanitizer station right at the front. They thoroughly wipe the chairs and table down after the last patrons before seating you. At your table, you can take your mask off. They have single-use disposable menus, and you have to enter your info onto their site so they can do contact tracing if necessary. We appreciated all of the precautions they're taking to keep everyone safe, and enjoyed our experience so much we came here twice in one day! read more

Been going to The Rhino for years. Unpretentious. Unassuming. This place is really a breath of fresh air compared to all of these new try-hard bars popping up in Parkdale. And the best part? It's actually big enough to seat you and a few friends (because who the hell wants to stand in a crowded sweaty bar all night? Get real). Food's good, beer's reasonable, if not cheap compared to the rest of this city. And the curly redhead server is a total babe. This place is great for a chill night to have decently priced alcohol and some pretty good food. Came here on a Friday night with some friends. For an appetizer we got a poutine, my friends ordered burgers, and I got the spinach linguine. Also got a couple of beers and ciders. The food was mediocre and was almost labelled bland, proportions weren't that great either. Service was good. Our server came by frequently and ensured we were okay. Overall, very chill place to hang out with friends. It does get super loud so just be aware that it isn't a first date kinda thing!! Will definitely come back here again. read more

I have a friend who lives by the saying "Rhino, anyone?" and they are pretty funny and always go here, so this place gets an automatic A-OK. This being said, there really isn't anything special about The Rhino aside from the three Ps: Patio, pool and prices. I have never eaten here. Ever. Which is surprising because they have a massive menu. It seems quite manic, from pastas to Indian inspired meals to traditional pub fare. It always smells tasty here, though, so eventually I'm sure I will drink enough beer on their patio to test drive their pout pout. So they don't know who they are in terms of chow? Who cares. They know who they are in terms of drink. Always 20-25 beers on tap and always at competitive prices. Long live the pachyderm of Parkdale, even if she is a huge, confused dame who is a tad messy. Best beer selection EVER. I met up with a girlfriend for dinner and drinks last night. She suggested The Rhino because it was apparently *the* place to go for beer. I am the first to admit I am a bit of a beer snob and I immediately flipped the menu to the German beer section. My eyes anxiously scanned the lengthily list for my coveted Festbock (dark with 7% alchohol), and I think I may actually have let out a yelp when there it was printed in bold black ink. **For those of you who don't know me Festbock is the liquid love of my life, I would happily replace all other fluids in my fridge if it wasn't so darn unhealthy and didn't lead to alcoholism. Just a couple of these 500mL cans and I'm the happiest girl alive, or at least for a couple of hours. Besides all that, The Rhino really does have an amazing beer selection and is the true watering hole of beers. The establishment is huge although I think the space could be better utilized to fit more tables and chairs. The staff were friendly enough without being fake or annoying, or on the other end of the spectrum, aloof. The restaurant, cutlery and bathroom seemed to be clean and free from offensive odors. We ordered a couple of drinks each and split the grilled calamari and a pizza. The food was good (I'm fairly easy to please when it comes to pub-style) and we were pleasantly surprised when the bill slid in at under $35 before gratuity. And that was for both of us! 2.5 stars Overall - a 3-4 star rating driven by their extensive beer list but minus a star or two for cleanliness, inconsistent service and mediocre food. The Rhino decor is very "old school" and dated so don't expect a trendy pub. Old school doesn't bother me but the pub just doesn't feel clean in my opinion and one needs to hold their breath in the washrooms. I stopped by for a few beers on different occasions and the service is generally hit or miss, either great or non-existant. When service is slow, just go to the bar and order your own drink. They usually have about 15 Canadian craft beers on tap which rotate including Beau's, Dieu du Ceil, Mill Street, Unibroue, Nicklebrook, Sawdust city and Granville Island. The have an even more impressive bottled beer selection with somewhere between 75-100 choices. They are listed by country of origin. The food is sub-par in my opinion. The nachos are served with minimal toppings and an odd tomato sauce / salsa. The burger is average at best. Definitely the best beer selection in the Queen west area and I would return if in the area. I do prefer to sit on the patio where the decor greatly improves. I would not put The Rhino in the same league as the city's better beer pubs including Barhop, Bar Volo and the Town Crier pub - where the atmosphere greatly improves, the food is above average and the service is constantly good. Hey, I went back there and Was pleased to say the rhino seems to have a new manager named Sarah, I think. I wouldn't have gone back there but my friend really wanted a beer you can't get elsewhere. This new manager has a great energy. Seems very on the ball. During my meal another guest had an issue with their meal, she handled everything nicely. I was pleased. After being so deeply offended by the mouthy, entitled blonde I was very resistant to ever return. it's good to see the place getting back to what made it great. I was sorry to see that my favourite staff wasn't there that day. Here's hoping that the charming tall man and the smiling redhead girl will serve me next time. To be fair, The Rhino definitely worth at least a 3 star, but being the 6th bar I hopped by on a Saturday night... I was a little confused... Since we got here right at last call, I didn't really able to settle down to think what I would like to drink. Their selections of drafts are definitely interesting with 23 drafts from local and even Charlevoix Dominus Vobiscum Blanche from Quebec! I didn't have a chance to even take a look at the list on what they have on bottles..... I let my friend picked whatever... so I still not sure whatever I drank was whatever?? Sami might able to enlighten me on that.. (Maybe it was his favourite IPA?) Service though was friendly and fast as a waitress came over and asked me what I want to drink right when I sat down.... I've loved the Rhino for years. It's a great place to hang with friends, it has a couple pool tables, a juke box, a patio and over 300 beers in bottles. It used to be my go-to place when I lived downtown. The only problem is that it can take a while to get served. It's a pretty big spot and it's almost always completely rammed. We ended up here in the wee hours of the morning after a pub crawl. This was a race against time to try and get something before last call. Phew we just made it in the nick of time. As I was being seated I was surprised by how big this place is. A humongous U shaped bar occupies the main area. The beer list is extensive and I ended up getting a Delirium Tremens. As I waited for the drink there was consistent flow of people. It seems like a popular spot. I was going to recommend it if you are in the area however the beer taste was off as it had an odd smokey flavor which is not supposed to be present in this beer so Strike one there. The visit to the washroom was not pretty as they are quite a walk from the main area and were very filthy so Strike two there. The beer list would be the main draw for me if I revisit. read more

Ah, The Rhino - the scruffy and lovable fixture of Parkdale! Sure, I love hip craft beer places, but The Rhino is the bar I return to the most. Despite almost always being out of a few things, the beer selection is really solid, and very fairly priced, as far as bars go. The food is a bit hit or miss (the nachos have always been soggy but also somehow lacking in cheese), but the good ones are GREAT - the burrito bowl is delicious and filling as all heck, and the Kung Pao tofu is a great lighter snack. The service is always a little slow, but always friendly. My favourite thing about this place though, is how comfortable of a place it is to just chill - I've come here to read, play handheld video games, and just generally kill time. The vibe of the place is just so laid back, and as long as you're ordering a couple of drinks they seem to let you stay forever. Overall, it's a bar I absolutely love to be able to call my main neighborhood watering hole. PLUS! In summer, the patio is just the greatest. read more

Not very impressed about this place :( I went with some friends from work yesterday night and overall, the feeling about the place was quite "meh". I personally give it two stars because of three reasons: 1) The food took forever. We only ordered some "patatas bravas" and light bites, but were waiting at least half an hour before the dishes came. Thing is, we decided to go into the place because we were sooo hungry... so to have to wait more than half an hour was baaaaad. 2) I got uberexcited when I saw they had "spanish patatas bravas with romesco sauce" on the menu. I am Spanish and I always eat patatas bravas when I go back to Spain or whenever I have the chance... I was so happy to see that item on the menu!!! So I ordered my dear patatas, and what I received could not be more different. The sauce was not romesco, was normal mayo with smoked paprika. The shape... they were fries, not bravas, bravas are always square-cut. Flavour could not have been more different, and the seasoning had nothing to do with the bravas seasoning. And you know what, the fries were actually good!!!!! But PLEASE do not call them patatas bravas! 3) When our food arrived, a friend of mine was told that they had forgot about his order and that, by the way, the dish he ordered 40 mins ago was not available. So we decided to leave because we didn't want to order again and wait another half an hour. Probably not coming back :/ read more

People are being way too harsh on this place. As a standard bar in Parkdale, it accomplishes virtually everything it set out to do. Decent decor, a lot of quirky people to meet, serviceable food and drinks and the requisite pool tables. Can't ask for much more than that. I stopped in recently while out with friends in the city, and the place was exactly as I remembered it. In a way, this bar describes Parkdale to a T - trashy hipsters hanging out with girls who look like they're dressed to go to a gala, all while the jovial staff are running around keeping everyone happy. Sure, the place is usually packed most nights, but I judge a bar not on how good the service is, but more on the atmosphere and sense of loyalty it can inspire from its patrons. Any place that can fill up any night is most likely worth the trek out there. As we just went in for a drink, I have no opinion of the food in general (though I seem to recall having nachos the first time I was there, which were okay). My favorite part of the place is the pool tables. Last time I was there, a friendly individual taught a group of us how to play, and everyone seemed in good spirits. I took in a game and was reminded that despite the somewhat-sparse nature of the basement (you'd think they could fill it up with more tables or something), it's an interesting setup and it's easy to focus. If there is a downside to the place, it's that their drink and food menu (as far as I can tell) is way too unwieldy and unfocused. I can see why service is slow - you need to pare down your menu and keep it to 20-25 dishes, tops. Maybe I'm just spoiled because of my love for The Crooked Cue in Mississauga. Regardless, Rhino is a safe option for a bar to hang out at, and if you go with friends, you're bound to find something of interest. Recommended. read more

The Rhino is a very special place. What people may not know, is how the owners actually own the BUILDING- so they can 'afford' to keep their prices reasonable...and for 14 years now I and thousands in the neighborhood have enjoyed that fact. You can go to the Rhino and pig out and get tipsy, say, as a couple? ...and leave with under $100 spent, tip included. I have always loved the place. Not fancy, not frilly; but the food is AMAZING and the liquor prices among the cheapest anywhere and the pool tables are level, and their bathrooms clean. IF you are a pretentious douche/narcissistic Hipster, you're never happy anyway so you may as well take pictures of tacos elsewhere- but, if you're a playful, hungry human in Parkdale with a little money to spend on a good time, hit up the Rhino. read more

It was a beautiful Toronto day and after exploring Queen street, we thought it'd be a great opportunity to sip some cold beers and rest on their patio. After being shown to a patio table and given menus, we spent over 15 minutes waiting for someone to take our order. During this time I saw 3 different members of the wait staff clean multiple tables, take orders, and attend to patrons all around us. We had enough and left. Dear Servers at the Rhino, I don't mean to tell you how to do your job...No, wait, I DO want to tell you how to do your job. You obviously need some help. 1) When you have close to 300 beers and 2 people come in and start asking about which lambics you have, it might make sense to bring them a menu. 2) After the second time said people have had to get up from their table to go to the bar to get service (and there are 2 servers working fewer than 20 people on a Sunday night), they tend to get somewhat irritated. 3) When your table is making sculptures by balancing empty beer glasses on top of each other in such a way as to enclose upside-down bottles, surrounding them with symmetrical arrangements of salt and pepper shakers, and are balancing sweetener containers on the tower, it is a sign that you have neglected them for too long. 3) When the member of the party who waits tables for a living is the one who thinks a 10 cent tip is too generous, your service is very, very bad. read more

I've been to the rhino once and that is enough for me. first of all the patio is more like a parking lot with disorganized tables, chairs and whatever else you may find that was probably thrown from the street into the area. i've never sat in a more uncomfortable seat at a restaurant/bar ever. the only thing the patio is good for is people watching if you get there early enough, it's literally right beside the sidewalk so you can have your fill of parkdales finest (and craziest) The service here is unbearably slow. It's not a fast food place but you'd expect the staff to be a little more interested in what was going on. When we got there, it wasn't crowded AT ALL. in fact, we were one of two couples sitting outside on the patio, so i don't know why the service was so slow. Eventually we got our drinks which were fine, just like anywhere else. I had ordered a soup and my boyfriend at the time ordered a salad. Both meals came 40 minutes later (soup & salad shouldn't take this long to serve!) and while my soup was moderate in taste, my ex's salad tasted like crap! He even put it "my salad tastes like what i guess dirty feet would". Gross! I tried it and indeed it was pretty flat. don't know if it was the dressing or the squishy mushrooms but it was not pleasant what-so-ever. We had told the waitress that the salad was bad (he wouldn't even attempt to eat it) and she was really nice about taking it off our bill. The only redeeming quality, the really nice waitress (she got a big tip). After I forced the rest of my soup down, we paid and left and decided to never return again. I'd probably say this is an OK place to just chill at (INSIDE) if you're getting together for beers (the selection is great if you don't mind waiting 30 minutes for a drink), but definitely not food because not only will you be served an hour+ later, the food might not be good too. read more
