Local is a solid gastro pub that features Ontario beers on tap listed on a handy sign hanging on the wall as well as international brews. The Pilsner Urquell served in their matching mug was a nice touch. Two floors, downstairs more casual, an outside sitting area for when the weather cooperates. Lots of TVs showing sports. The food is good. Had grilled fish tacos with a side of fries. The nachos app was just ok. Their burgers are excellent. Prices are starting to creep up a bit. I was at this Leaside spot right on Laird at opening time, when I needed something to eat. I had the eggs bene, which was perfect! It's one of the new style social eateries, beer hall style places with plenty of room to move around, talk loudly and chill out as well. The fact that they can make a decent breakfast is a great option in the area, which is mainly suburban fast food from across the street. I enjoyed chatting with the staff who were friendly and accommodating while they were preparing for the work day. I wouldn't hesitate to stop by in the evening for a drink when in the area. The atmosphere was really not bad, sitting upstairs kind of like an indoor patio area. With a size of 15+ people, the place was a little bit cramped but not too bad. The waiters took so long to come take our order, it was quite bad. I think we sat there waiting for the food order to come around for over 30 minutes. They did manage to get our drink orders first though, perhaps the only saving grace. I ordered a chicken quesadilla and one of my friends ordered their spicy wings appetizer. My quesadilla wasn't too bad, though if it didn't have the creamy jalapeño sauce, it would have been quite tasteless. My friend's chicken wings were very salty though, with no spice in the taste. I was looked upon with condescension at this place. Initially, when thought to be a customer, the face of the staff lights up, happy to assist me. But when the manager is summoned because I'm looking for a job as a server, the stern, look me up and down face appears. Through discussion with the manager, I learn it is the GM who does the hiring. The GM comes over to me. He looks at me like an over confident Matt Gaetz. Asks me if I've applied before. I have. I did a terrible job of an online / ore recorded video interview a year ago. I followed that up with an email to the GM, admitting that I may not come across well on video, and that perhaps we could meet anyway. No answer, of course. About 4 months ago, I called back in response to a post that they were looking. The manager says to send my résumé. I do, and hear nothing. A week ago, I see that, yet again, they're looking for three front of house positions, including a server, busser and a manager. I thought: "If they had hired me in the first place, maybe they wouldn't be needing to hire so frequently. Is there a high turnover there? I wonder what that's all about." I decide to go IN to the establishment, with my happy, smiley face. I just need a part time job. And I can do this. But, I get disdain. I have dined at this place many, many times. I was there when Raptors won the NBA championship. I was there during the Leafs Stanley Cup games. I've brought and met many friends there. I've had brunch there solo at the bar. It's interesting to me that no one recognizes me. Ever. But I'm guessing it's because of the high turnover. This place...maybe it's a blessing to me that I haven't been hired. Betcha the GM won't forget who I am now, thanks to this post. That's not hospitality. Went for lunch for the first time in awhile and had a curry dish plus added $2 for cauliflower rice. Dish tasted very good nice moderate level of spice and lots of ingredients. We walked through Local Leaside's doors just before noon on a weekday, and the place was already about half full. The scant booths were taken, so we were stuck with a high table. (Seriously, why so many high tables?) Anyway, I knew walking in what I wanted to eat: The Diablo Hamburger ("Cheddar & jack cheese, hot sauce, pickled jalapeños & onions") and I substituted a salad for the fries. It arrived about 15 minutes later and it's definitely quite impressive in appearance. The burger looked like something you'd see in an advertisement, so I was impressed by the amount of care that went into preparing it. How did it taste, though? Pretty darn good. The various flavors all worked really well together and it's fairly spicy, as well. I can't tell you much about the patty itself, as its flavor and consistency was obliterated by the condiments and somewhat dense bun. But given the effectiveness of the overall package, I wasn't too disappointed by this. The side salad was quite tasty, too, and the service was quick and efficient. read more

Local Leaside is my go to pub. Its the site of a former bank and the interior has a unique industrial look and feel to it. They always offer amazing service and above average quality chain restaurant food. The star of the show is their ground level bar with a large number of TVs to watch a game and decent craft beer selection which is frequently rotated. If you're unsure if you'll like a beer, ask for a sample. My favorite is their fish tacos, they never disappoint. My only complaint would be the size of some of their appetizers. The space is inviting the menu looks promising but the execution of the food is not up to snuff. Very busy & slow with drink order (understaffed) Order: Steak sandwich w/ fries, the steak was Perfect. Fries stone cold. Ask to be replaced. They were excellent hot. Rueben sandwich. Tasted ok. Sat under the lamp of course. And fries same as above, cold. Eggs Bene. Egg part perfect. Cold home fries. Forget side of hollandaise. Reminded and delivered, cold again. Clam Chowder. Not clam chowder this was fish soup w/very little fish and a weird undercooked mirepoix. Wouldn't recommend. Clam chowder is supposed to be thick. Watery packaged fish stock. Luke warm The absolute worst was the loaded nachos ($20). Now that was not loaded and definitely sat under the heat lamp waiting for some poor soul to pick it up. We sent it back for a fresh one. And the new one was the old one with a few nacho chips and cheese thrown over the top and tossed in the salamander. We ate the fresh top and left the rest. We let our server know, the bill came with the nachos on it. I asked for a 50% discount (for the nachos only) the manager could only muddle a $8 staff food discount because he said "we made u 2 and u did eat them" no we didn't. We ate 50% worth. Hence why we wanted discount. One star for the steak and one star for my lunch guest and kitchen staff. Get runners. Don't let food sit under the heat lamps. Cold fries, Luke warm soup, pasty melted cheese on Nachos in a restaurant this busy means the kitchen executed the meal but no one picked it up for awhile. LOCAL Public Eatery was highly recommended by a friend Pauline W so we decided to come by for a night cap. Parking on the weekend though might be an issue as the lot has limited parking spaces. I have to fight for the last one with my friend. Aside for that I had a good experience. Local beer on taps though limited but I like how they are on a rotation so I can look forward to something seasonal and different next visit. And if you prefer wine, they have wines on taps too. The bartender here is high energy and friendly. Ready to give you some recommendations or a sample before you placed your drink order. For the sport fans, there are quite a few TVs in the bar/dining area so you won't be missing any actions. And they even have a rooftop patio area for the warm summer days. $5.50 for a pint is quite reasonable priced for a craft beer. We weren't given water until we asked for water and we were only 2 minutes away from getting a discount for our nachos (we were supposed to get discounts after 9pm). We still had to pay the full price for the nachos, even after bringing it up to the server. Has 2 floors with the upstairs being a rooftop patio, a rustic "local" vibe, and an open kitchen concept upstairs. To eat I tried the fish tacos which were surprisingly delicious! I kind of always expect the best but prepare for the worst eating tacos outside a non- Mexican restaurant due to past experiences, but I really enjoyed them. They were 2 decent sized tacos, seasoned to perfection with a side of fries. The mojitos were good (not the best I've had). My date got a burger with a side of fries which he enjoyed, stating that the ingredients tasted fresh. We got our food fast but service overall was average. I would've rated 3.5 stars. The burgers came inside a separate package within the box to keep the fries separate - nice touch. The burgers themselves were great, full of flavour. On my first visit here I had the ahi tuna sandwich. I thought it was really good, but could've improved somewhat if the grill had been hotter for the searing. A great tuna steak has a bit of the crispiness and caramelization on the crust, but then you want the softness and coolness to reach pretty quickly below that. I felt it mine here wasn't quite seared, but then cooked a bit too much in the middle. That said, it wasn't too off and I liked everything in the sandwich. I tried a bite of my friend's burger and it didn't come off as well as it looked on the menu. The meat on that was a bit overcooked too. But I came by again the other day and had their huevos rancheros. I was a bit reluctant to order it, but a couple people I was with really insisted that I tried it. Man, I'm glad I did as it was so good! I was amazed at the depth of flavour of the salsa roja and perfect texture too with the right amount of spice. They must have a good supplier for their corn tortillas too as the taste really came through. A generic tortilla wouldn't have shone through the salsa rosa that it came with. Nice place with a huge beer menu and craft options up the wazoo. Their prices are very reasonable too and lower than I expected. I like the easy going neighborhood vibe of this pub. There are plenty of seats both inside and outside, so you can choose if you want your sun exposure for the day or not. We came on a Saturday afternoon hoping to catch the soccer game and thankfully they had several large television screens which were visible from pretty much any seat on the floor. We sat at the bar, were promptly served our drinks and the staff checked in every so often to make sure were were okay. Extra star for the diversity of patrons and the staff's friendly easy-going demeanor that made everyone fell welcomed. There was a child's birthday party at the long table, single male patrons loitering at the bar, families with their kids, several couples watching the game and groups of regulars (knew the staff by name). The most impressive was when a group of 5 young kids (like maybe grade 6 age? they were so tiny their heads barely reached the bar standing up) came in, noisily crowded the bar, energetically waved down the bartender and ordered a plate of nachos. The bartender was polite, bent down to their level to speak with them, offered them water, informed them that they couldn't be seated on the rooftop patio when asked (but why??? they all chorused) and offered to set them up comfortablly at one of the tables instead. There's a variety of things to pick from but not many. Enough that you'll find something to eat but not be overwhelmed. You will be by the wine and drink options though. I got the fish and chips. (The fish isn't real. It's bass. ) the chips were yummy. You even get salad. My sister ordered the chicken tacos. She liked them. The portions are huge which is very nice. We go to both locations and the food is consistent and delicious. This review is for both locations (Leaside and Liberty Village) The service depends on how busy it is. The food and drinks are always good. The decor is rustic and goes perfectly with the food and drink selections. I don't remember ever having a bad dish. The burger arrived soggy once, the restaurant was too crowded that day, so I didn't send it back. The main floor is tables and booths, they have a bar and also a pool table (I think it was a pool table or some sort of game table). Upstairs is 19+ roof top patio, with beautiful wooden tables and well lit with pretty lights. There is a TV at the bar as well if you're looking to watch sports. Downstairs is very, very loud if it's busy--music is fairly loud, and people's voices reverb around the room, so it can be hard to hear the people you're actually with. Food was pretty good, though. Szechuan edamame was tasty, but lacking much spice (and what spice there was was unevenly distributed). The tuna club had great flavors, but the ingredients weren't distributed very evenly across the sandwich, either. Yam fries were delicious--perfectly crispy outside, soft inside, and the lemon mayonnaise they came with was very good. The fish and chips was also good, but the "chips" were very skinny-cut fries, which was a little weird. Overall, while all of the flavors were there, the execution of the dishes tended to lack a little. The atmosphere was as expected for a pub, but it would have been nice to have the music at a volume where it was possible to hear conversation across a small table without shouting. I would recommend going outside of peak hours to avoid both a wait and the noise issue. read more
