On 11/24/23 my family and I stopped at Churchill's as a last stop during Black Friday shopping. I was looking at some light-up Angel ornaments hanging from a tree when one dropped to the floor and shattered. There was an employee who looked over at me in disgust and seemed quite appalled that one of the (thousands of) glass ornaments was broken by a customer. I apologized and helped clean it up, meanwhile the employee (dark, short hair) never said a word to me. She carried the ornament over to the counter. I made my way over to the counter and the broken ornament was sitting there. It was obvious there was a discussion about it. I purchased 2 of the ornaments I had been looking at before that one broke and noticed I was charged half price for the broken ornament. When I asked why, the clerk, who I believe was a manager, said that it was store policy. However, nowhere in the store did I see that noted. There was no signage that made me aware I would be charged if I broke anything. I was really upset about this. It was clearly not intentional that the ornament fell to the floor and broke. You would have thought I committed a crime by the way the employee looked at me and the way the manager did not seem to care that I was upset. I had intended to come back the next day to get my Christmas tree and a wreath, but decided to give the former Rolling Green, Gardener's Supply, my business. So, for charging me the $5.50 and treating me so poorly, Churchill's lost out on a larger sale. And Gardener's Supply valued my business which is more than I can say for Churchill's. read more

I visited today for the first time. My friend who brought me is a long time customer and she was wearing a mask. I wore a mask and purchased a pair of glove there upon arriving. The selection inside and out was pleasant and adequate, but not exceptional. The young man at the register inside, and young woman at the outside register, were both sporting masks that did not cover their noses and loosely cupped their chins. I noted to the young man that his mask did not fit very well and he mumbled something, but did not adjust it. My friend and I purchased approximately $100 of plant materials and following the transaction, I politely said to the young woman that her failure to cover her nose and mouth exposed us to her exhalations, while our masks protected her from ours. She politely agreed and did nothing to adjust her mask. The behavior of these young persons exhibits a lack of concern for the health and well-being of their customers, every one of whom was wearing a mask at the time of our visit. I will not return to Churchill Nurseries. read more

I was in yesterday 05-23-2020 wanting to support local business instead of big box stores. I've just moved to the area and as a small biz owner myself it's a huge value of mine to do so. This is especially important to me during the covid 19 issue, as I'm aware so many of us can/will not make it. I wanted a hanging plant for my farmers porch and I wanted some impatiens for a small garden I just built. The hanging plants are beautiful and none of them are priced??? Impatient aren't available any more due to a fungus that is ruining the plant. I was super grateful for the info.. I had some concerns when the the owner???? or buyer??? of the plants helped me and she stood 3 feet from me explaining why they had no impatiens (mask-less) this year. Her brother who was also super helpful wearing a mask made me feel a bit safer. I bought some tomato fertilizer and at the check out desk were 5 employees 4 "kids" 1 adult...... none wearing a mask. I happen to be wearing one as I am a healthcare worker and hope to be mindful of not passing anything on to folks I come into contact with. When I asked the kids if they weren't required to wear a mask one said he was off duty and the one waiting on me ignored me and didn't answer. When I asked again her was sarcastic and rude, rolling his eyes and clearly irritated with my questions. The adult standing in the check out area said nothing. Here's the thing.. I value local businesses, I want to support them, I care enough about my fellow humans that I don't want to expose them to anything I may have been exposed to. Id like the same from the businesses I support, Id like to feel care about. I don't blame these kids. I believe its a leadership failure. I wont be returning, and that makes me sad I really don't want to buy my plants from box stores. I'm hoping to find another small business to support in the area. Walked in, looked around, and walked out. Nothing can justify the ridiculously high prices.

Bought a ceramic rocking horse in their post-Christmas sale. It was in it's original bag/wrapping and when I went to store it after the holidays, I found it was broken in pieces. Brought it back to the store with the receipt and original packaging, only to be accused of not handling it properly and "they weren't a packaging store". She refused to give me, even a store credit. I spent well over three hundred dollars in the store over Christmas (I am new to the area). I won't be back. When I told the sales associate that, she sarcastically told me, "have a good day". That's the problem with businesses today, they do not stand behind their customer support/customer service and then blame the customer when something goes wrong. Is it really worth the 28.00 to lose my potential business? I guess so. I won't be back to your store. "Have a good day." When I posted this review on FB, they came back with another rude response basically accusing me of lying. If you go to Churchill's you need to know; 1. You have ten days to return anything, irregardless of the situation, 2. They DO NOT take the time to wrap fragile items carefully, and 3. THEY ARE THE RUDEST PEOPLE EVER and they are indifferent to your experience. (See other reviews below.) read more

I have been here many times over the years and spent many hundreds of dollars on beautiful plants and greenery. This morning I made a special trip from Newburyport to buy a large basket or classy container of coordinating plants for my husband's new office. I was planning on it costing a few hundred dollars because I wanted something special. I thought Churchills was the place because their houseplant are gorgeous and well taken care of... I asked when I walked in about a basket and it was as if this woman didn't know what I could possibly be wanting. "No, we don't have baskets". When I asked for another suggestion "no, we don't have anything like that" when I said fine, I'll just find my own container can someone help me pick out some coordinating plants "I don't work in that area" mind you it was 8am. I was the only person I the store. A woman finally met me in the greenhouse and admitted that I was not the only person who had ever asked for such a thing. She helped me pick 3 plants and offered to have them foiled by the first unhelpful woman. I asked for care cards for each of the plants "ask Kay for that". I said "can you ask Kay for that?" Her extremely rude and snarky response "I'm foiling? I'll do it when I'm done foiling". What I wanted: a professional, helpful person to assist in picking out and putting together a beautiful, classy, large office gift plant combination in a basket or wire container with moss or something nice. What I got: a nice woman who tried to help and a snarky, unhelpful, unprofessional person who garishly foiled my 3 random houseplants and let me take 3 trips out to the car instead of offering to help. 2 stars are for the quality of the plants. The prices and the customer service seriously lacking. Off to Michael's crafts to finish the job! read more

Whatever the season, Churchill's is where the Exeter community goes for all things seasonally festive and green. They host special events for kids-- pumpkin carving, exotic animal visits, etc. And nothing south of the North Pole beats its spread for Christmas. read more

Fabulous selection of annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs. Friendly and knowledgable staff. A real treat to grab a few things for the garden and grab lunch at Anis (equally wonderful) next door. Lovely gifts too. read more

From the true novice (such as myself) to the expert, Churchill's will fit the bill. They offer just about anything that can be grown, such as trees, fruit trees, shrubs, herbs, flowers, vines etc. But better than that, they employ a staff that loves to grow things and will offer their expert advice in terms of selection and care for your plants. All season long their grounds are covered with healthy, robust, well nurtured plants. The quality of the plants on their grounds reflects the passion and effort the employees put into their work. There is also a "design center" on site, where a nice young lady by the name of Shannon will cater to your every flower need. I am personally working with her on my wedding and the day will be fantastic! Please do not overlook this local gem! I probably would save $1 on my pot of flowers at the local big box store, but I'd miss the warmth and hospitality of the staff! I'd also miss the nifty cod fish pond. read more

Churchill's throughout my life has been known for quality products, service and unique high end inventory. I went in at Christmas and was disappointed in their ornament and holiday decorations - they just weren't classy or quality. It was the first time I ever left without buying something. Two weeks ago I got a FB notification of a houseplant sale. I went a couple of days after the sale started and a lot of the plants were still bagged. I was looking for something specific and the greenhouse lady told me they hadn't been unwrapped. I assumed if we could unwrap a few so I i could look- no. No?! She's been there for 30 years, is a wealth of information but haas zero customer service skills- none. She was fine with me leaving the store empty handed. I went into the main part of the store, described my interaction with the green house lady and she just kind of rolled her eyes and offered to help me. Apparently her poor customer service is known by other staff members. If she's great at her job in the greenhouse get her some help with customers so no one has the same experience. read more

If you want outstanding customer service, don't bother. I have been a customer of Churchills for a number of years - but not any more! I purchased special certificates for Churchill's through the "Limelight Deals." They were essentially 50% off - Buy $10 gift card and receive $20. of products. I purchased three of them. It wasn't until I went to Churchill's yesterday, May 3, 2016, that I saw I could only spend them one at a time - meaning three visits. I approached two young people behind the counter, neither of whom knew about the certificates. They suggested that I return today, May 4th, and speak to a manager. I did so. The woman I spoke with was the store manager and she agreed that I should not have to come back and that something could be done. She asked if I were going to shop that day. I said, "Yes." All was fine. Then another woman, with long, reddish hair, and seated beside the counter, interjected herself. She said, "Well we might be able to do two of then today but not three. You have to read the small print and remember that other people could be inconvenienced too." The reprimand was obvious and her rudeness made up my mind. I left all my gift certificates there and informed her that she had lost a customer. From now on, I will go to Wentworth's where the customer service is far superior. read more

This is a great greenhouse with acres of plants and a huge selection of perennials and annuals. Very helpful staff members. I especially like their autumn chrysanthemums. My only complaint is their prices which are among the highest in this area. They have no concept of a sale and seem to cater to folks who have money to burn. I would visit here more often if their prices were more reasonable! read more

Beautiful stuff, but I was treated so rudely by the woman attending to the cash register I will never return. I asked her if she could help me and she responded by saying, "I know nothing about houseplants and the woman who does has left early to get ready for the employee party." I asked if there was anyone who could help me and she said, "No." She didn't even ask me what my question was. I wanted to purchase a bird bath made out of wrought iron with two glass bowls. I wanted to know if I could choose the color of the glass bowls. With the highest prices on the seacoast I was expecting better customer service. read more

I had a disillusioning experience similar to Joanne M's. Last week I tried to return a defective garden stand. One of the legs had rusted off after 2 months' use, even though it is supposed to be designed for outdoor settings. The stand was expensive, at $50 (I could have gotten it on Amazon for $30, but it was convenient and I try to support local businesses when I can). The store manager told me they won't accept any return--defective or not--after 10 days. "How do we know you didn't run it over with your car?" she asked. This despite the fact that I had spent around $4,000 over the previous several months on trees and plants for a major landscaping project--all of those purchases being documented in their member rewards database. Why they would imagine their best customers could lie about such a thing is anyone's guess. It certainly added insult to injury, given how much business I had given them. Churchill's merchandise is quite overpriced, but I figured buying local would ensure good customer service if anything went wrong. I was wrong, and I can't see the point is of paying top dollar to a local establishment if they offer nothing better than what I can get online--without the insults! read more

Really rude and unhelpful people! They change staff like crazy--it seems like I am never working with the same person when I need plants. And I am always made to feel like it is my fault when I can't find what I am looking for. Perennials selection used to be much more special; now its like everywhere else. I will say that the shrub people know what they are talking about, but that is it. Overall, you find the same level of knowledge with people at the big box stores. You can find the same plants from the same growers at local hardware stores for way less. If you want to buy local, go to another place where they care about getting your business. read more

The most horrendous holiday shopping experience ever! In spite of the lovely Christmas music playing and a gentle falling snow, my visit to Churchill's left me with the feeling of bah humbug! I visited the greenhouse to purchase a potted plant as a gift. It was half empty, and no sales people available. A virtual ghost town, I sorted through a very thin inventory of small, uncared for Christmas cactus which had been picked over, with few buds. Looked for a clerk and found "Jessica" who knew nothing about the available inventory, and told me "Nancy" was at lunch, but would be back shortly. I waited about ten minutes, decided on a a different plant, selected a pot and searched again for someone to assist, no sign of "Nancy." Found a lovely young girl who immediately took the plant and potted it for me. Having seen a few nice plants potted with bows with sold signs on them, I headed to the check out for a ribbon and some cellophane,I had expressed several times that the purchase was a gift. "Oh no, we don't have cellophane or ribbon here!" I was told I could have a brown paper bag. "You have to go to the other end of the store and buy a bow." Really? I wondered how special the person was who actually had two pots waiting to be picked up with ribbons on them. So I jogged down to the other end of the store, now having spent a half hour in the most depressing place I had visited all day, and found once again "Jessica." Not doing much but yapping to a young worker, she informed me I could choose from the ribbon available in their very small selection, and then pay for it. No Merry Christmas, No Happy Holidays, No, "how can I help you?" I told her I had just purchased a gift for someone and needed a ribbon. "Well, we don't do that here." Oh, really? Guess that's the last time I spend my hard earned dollars at Churchill's. In an attempt to pick up the holiday cheer, I stopped in to the coffee shack outside, where two young clerks shouted in unison, "we're closed!" (It was 2:30 in the afternoon!) Bah Humbug to all of you poor people who work there. I suspect the attitude flows from the top down. Merry Christmas to you lost souls. And for the rest of you, please don't waste you money at this overpriced, sad place. read more
