Probably one of the best ice cream shops I've tried in the area. The first thing I noticed at this shop was their hours open - with Sunday spelled "Sundae", which I thought was really clever. The shop is covered with yellow and cute little drawings of ice cream and popsicles. Once you walk in, you immediately see the cashier and menu, and there are about 10+ tables on your left. We ordered a Caramelicious (vanilla soft serve + bananas "Foster style", whipped cream) in regular and a De la llyod (coffee soft serve, Aztec brownie bites, oreo crunches, spicy dust) in the small. One thing you should know is THE PORTIONS ARE HUGE. I couldn't even finis the small De la llyod because it was way too much ice cream! But it's pretty good. The Caramelicious has a little too much caramel in the middle, so it got really sweet towards the end, and overall the texture of the vanilla soft serve was on the chewier side (if that makes any sense). It also comes with two churros, which were really good too. Churros dipped in ice cream was yum! I would recommend the De la llyod to people who aren't into super sweet ice cream. The coffee soft serve had a very strong coffee flavor, and it balanced very well with the toppings. On top of the yummy ice cream, the employees were super nice and patient with us even though we were a bit indecisive in deciding what we wanted. I would definitely come back. This particular evening wasn't very busy which was fortunate for my friend and me. I read Nutella on the menu and immediately ordered The Billionaire. My friend ordered the Lisa Turtle (vegan) with the churro and brownie on the side to be later consumed by me. The Billionaire is delicious. My favorite part of ice cream is the cone, particularly cake cones and so the wafer bits mixed with Nutella on top of a chocolate dipped soft serve was more than I could ask for. I couldn't really put my taste buds to figure out what kinds of cookies were actually mixed in, but they were cookies, so of course it was delicious! I thought the cookie pieces would be just sort of sprinkled on top, but instead, it was more like a blizzard that you'd get from Dairy Queen. My husband was curious about the different sprinkle options, so we just asked what they had to offer. I found it really interesting that the employee said that the company worked really hard to find a signature sprinkle - a classic yellow sprinkle to match their branding. I didn't get to try them on the day of our visit, but if it's a signature product, I'll definitely be back to try them out! Churn is a little small on the inside, but it's nice because when there's the warmer weather, this is plenty of room to enjoy your dessert outside instead! I saw an ad on Facebook for Churn's secret of the week and I had to try it! This ice cream was made with Tipico coffee custard, chopped hazelnut toffee, and a Whiskey Caramel-drizzle with a fresh cinnamon waffle cone. Boy was it messy, not sure if there is a way to make it less messy, maybe a waffle bowl? And I enjoyed it even though it was on the verge of being too sweet , my friend thought it might have been better with vanilla ice cream. I have to say though, their waffle cones are delicious, beats that cardboard cone you get at most ice cream joints! My other friend ordered the Samoan sundae, she enjoyed it and was surprised to find out it was made with coconut vegan custard! As a former ice cream stand employee, I love going around Buffalo to try different soft serve. And boy do I love what they're serving up at Churn! The flavor and consistency of their soft serve is pretty stellar. It's thick and creamy and definitely has more of a "natural" milk taste. I love it! The sundaes, toppings, and blizzard-type things they serve are also pretty delicious. The churro sundaes look so tasty but I haven't tried one, I'm waiting to go with someone to share! Their sprinkles are also super cute and tasty. My only complaint is the price to size ratio. Went on a Saturday afternoon recently and there was no line. Had lunch next door at Lloyd's and got Churn conveniently right after. Decor is very bright, welcoming, and happy. There is a good amount of seating both inside and outside. My friends and I took our cones for a nice walk down Hertel instead. Soft serve was great and I know they have very fresh ingredients but taste wise, it wasn't anything super different from soft serve I've had anywhere else. I did like the toppings on my Take 6 cone ($5) and my favorite part was the waffle cone - really tasty. Though I am not vegan, I like that there are vegan options. Overall, I enjoyed my experience but not on my list of go-tos. Would love to try their other flavors (especially the vegan options) in the future. Question/suggestion: can the customer rewards offered at Lloyds be extended to Churn as well since they are sister organizations? Stopped by for some ice cream, on one of the first nice days in Buffalo, and this place did not disappoint! They have basic flavors vanilla, chocolate, coffee, and a vegan option I think. You can "dress it up" in a milkshake or sundae, in a cup, HOMEMADE waffle cone, or cake cone. I opted for the vanilla with sprinkles (you could also have a dip!) and it was creamy and absolutely perfect. The regular is actually pretty big- see the pictures. I loved that this place was all about the small businesses of Buffalo. They had a coffee you could buy from Tipico called Churn which has sweeter notes in it and a sundae made with the Aztec brownie from Lloyd's. No more will you have to roam the fields of rural Western New York hoping and praying that the next mom-and-pop ice cream stand will randomly carry Dole whip (which, to be fair, sometimes works out). You can, at last, get ice cream after dinner on Hertel just like everyone else. In addition to a classic cone with sprinkles, this wonderful, creamy, Elmhurst milk based magic comes in a Blizzard-esque Girl Scout cookie mashup called the Samoan and a nostalgic sundae with Trix cereal. The staff here are also very careful about dietary restrictions; I once asked for a coconut cone with rainbow sprinkles, and the employee cashing me out had someone check for me that they were vegan. They weren't, I ended up with the house-made yellow sprinkles, and she didn't upcharge me for sprinkles at all since I had to wait for like, two extra seconds. Sadly I don't think the churros here are vegan friendly, which is a bummer since authentic Spanish churros are. One step into this place and you'll feel like a Kid in a Candy Store, Ice Cream is of those Frozen, brain numbing Treats that make you delve deep inside yourself to take you back to your Childhood (Exhibit A - Dairy Queen). The sister establishment to the Popular Taqueria, Lloyd's with conjoining Doors meaning you can have a few Tacos and then Walk right over for some Dessert to satisfy the Sweet Tooth (or Vice Versa). Me being a lover of most things Sweet, made me want to rush over here so I had to ask my Sister to give me a Lift. What made it even Sweeter was to see my old Friend Jennifer Boye (the Head Honcho, Numero Uno) running the Show, who's as sweet as the Sweets she serves to Customers of all ages. I walked in surrounded by Yellow along the Walls with various Shapes and Ice Cream Cones and Sundaes in Bright Red that I consider signs that a Indulgent Creamy Treats await you. the one thing that caught my eye was the Billionaire (sounds Rich as the Name), a Twist Soft Serve that was dipped in Chocolate with a big swirl of Nutella going round and around with bits of Hazelnuts and Wafers and what better way to put Emphasis on Rich than with it being Garnished with Golden Pearls. You dig your spoon down in there and you bring back up some of that Creamy Vanilla/Decadent Chocolate Hybrid while also picking up some double hitting Crunch that both the Wafer and the Hazelnuts give, the Nutella that was cascading all around gave it another Level of Rich (yet you don't feel spoiled like Veruca Salt), the Golden Pearls just brought Glitz & Glamour with that Confectionery Taste to it just like any Store bought sprinkles you can get. I also recall my Sister Katie buying a Tropical Freezie Pop (Gleamingly White, Coconut Base from what I heard with bits of Pineapple & Mango in & Out). Sadly she lost it when she went to Whole Foods and came back Out, it fell out as soon as she opened the Door (Lesson learned, don't put things in the Door Handle). My other visit to this Brain Freeze Inducing Sugar Haven was when I spent the Day at the Buffalo Zoo, waiting for my Dad to pick me up and while waiting for the North Buffalo Farmer's Market to open up we stopped over. Mostly instead of getting a Sundae or something to Spoil for Appetite for Dinner, we both just decided to get an Ice Cream Cone, we both decided on Coffee flavor. Presented like how any Soft Serve is presented, Swirl, light Beige color with a Robust Flavor and subtle Bitterness at the end. Looking over their Menu both of times that I was there I saw that the prices are a tad bit Steep (5.29 for a Regular Sundae and 6.79 for a Large, Cones ranging from 2.89 and 3.49 and Churro Sundaes are 7 Bucks). If you want soft serve ice cream in the busy, trendy Hertel Avenue area, Churn gets the job done. It is a small ice cream shop right next to Lloyd's Tacos on Hertel; they're actually hooked together on the inside. It is street parking only, which will be limited during dinner hours and most of the weekend. Inside Churn, there is seating for about 15 people along the wall, which fills up quick when busy, and is snug and cramped. The menu is small, with three or four flavors of homemade soft-serve, a few sundae'ish specialties, and a few Blizzard-like offerings. The soft-serve itself is pretty good. It is smooth and creamy, what you would hope to get from a place called "Churn". But if you like the "stuff" that comes with the ice cream as much as you like the ice cream itself, (this is me, I like all of the toppings and candy as much as, if not more than the the ice cream itself), then Churn is going to underwhelm you. I've been a few times, and recently got the Cookie Monsta', which is like a Blizzard that claims to have three types of cookies mixed in. For $6.99, it was almost all ice cream, with very little cookie mixed in. And I didn't count three. I saw some oreo bits, maybe a chocolate chip cookie, and the third was just broken up ice cream cone. The vanilla soft serve was good, but not worth the cost for the skimpy, disappointing mix-ins. When we happen to be on Hertel and want soft serve, Churn is okay, but it would not be my first choice for my own personal ice-cream-to-candy-and-toppings-ratio preferences. I came her for the first time this season last night. I was very surprised to see how busy it was for 10:30 at night on a Wednesday. There was a line almost out the door and all the seats were taken. I am a huge fan of Lloyd so my expectations were very high. There are other places I would go for ice cream but this ice cream shop is definitely worth the visit if you haven't been. I got here on a Sunday night so it was rather crowded. If you eat inside when its busy, you get very cramped and not much room to move or relax. Aside from that, the ice cream is dressed rather nice. Every ice cream dish they offer has a theme and looks great. The soft serve and the ice cream seems average but once they add the toppings and all the fixins', it makes the dessert very very good. Finally went to Churn for their vegan soft serve. I'm generally skeptical of coconut milk based ice cream but the allure of pumpkin ice cream was too much to resist. I had also heard that Churn uses Elmhurst almond milk as part of their base. Elmhurst Milked Nuts are the best plant milks in existence and they happen to be made right here in WNY. Love those local partnerships. The pumpkin ice cream was perfection. I very much wanted it to be pumpkin, not pumpkin spice, and I was not disappointed. The pumpkin is the main flavor, then the coconut. I don't love coconut in sweet applications but I do love it in curries and pumpkin curry is one of my favorite Sri Lankan dishes. The pumpkin and coconut were perfect together and the ice cream was probably the richest dairy-free ice cream I've ever had. I told myself in advance that I would just order the ice cream, no frills. It was hard to keep my resolve because the pumpkin ice cream can be has with gingerbread crumbs and cranberry sauce on top or with shortbread crust, candied pecans, and caramel sauce folded in. Both options are totally vegan with all the fixins. 4 stars for being delicious, creamy, and having all the vegan extra. In order to get 5 stars, I'd want to see vegan whipped cream, hot fudge, waffle cones, and more than one flavor at a time. The music was really loud from Lloyd's next door and I honestly thought we were in the back of a club trying to visit. There are about 3 choices of cones, and equally as many of something bigger and more expensive, possibly a milkshake type thing? It wasn't very clear on the menu. I had my cone in a dish thinking it would allow for me to enjoy the toppings best, but the dish was so little that the ice cream was three times as tall and falling off the edges. It meant that I quickly had to eat the outer layer where the toppings were so it didn't all melt down, and then I was left with a giant pile of soft serve ice cream that I wasn't really into because i thought i was paying for a mixed creation and this was plain and triple the cost of a cone that size elsewhere. I would definitely give this place a better rating if they had wider serving bowls, or gave you a little plastic container of the toppings to put on halfway through eating when you want more of them. The servers were nice though and talkative. And like anywhere on Hertel, forget about parking closer than half a mile away. So plan time to walk over if you're meeting someone here. read more

My best friend and I went to Churn Soft Serve after enjoying a meal from Lloyds. As natives of the area we are always willing to try a new and exciting place for ice cream. Changed their coconut milk vegan ice cream recipe. Now it's more of a coconut ice. Bring back the old recipe!

My roommate and I basically eat out everyday and are Lloyd fans so I'm not entirely sure why I've never ventured into Churn...but boy am I glad I did. When it came my turn to order I informed my cashier that I had never been there before, so I asked for her favorites aside from what my roommate told me to get, The Billionaire. There was a line and a slight rush but the cashier did not rush with me to get through the line, I wasn't long ordering but it was nice that she cared it was my first time experiencing Churn and that I would enjoy whatever I went with. I ended up going with the regular sized (which is pretty LARGE) Billionaire. It literally tastes like a Ferrero Rocher chocolate and is topped with gold pearls to really give it that billionaire twist. For less than $5, TIP INCLUDED, I was more than satisfied when I left Churn. I can imagine paying close to $10 for the identical cone I ordered elsewhere. I truly expected to be paying more for what everything has. I also loved the fact that the menu wasn't super large...I am very indecisive when I comes to ordering anything I eat so the fact that the menu was short and sweet, but still had a variety of flavors, was another plus for someone like me! My first experience wasn't awesome earning a 2 star review, but we went again this past weekend and it was much better. I got the Michele Ferrero, as recommended by the ice cream professional behind the counter. It was delicious and as packed as the outside of the cone was, it was surprisingly balanced. I would rate this experience as a 4 star, but since the last one was 2 I changed my rating to a 3. If my service and ice cream is the same next time I go, I will bump it up again. read more
