Stopped in because the cafe we wanted to go to had a limited menu for the upcoming holidays and we're happy to see this close by as an option. The staff was friendly and food was ready quick and as we took our order to go, I was happy with the choice, that was until one of the sandwiches had not only 1 but 2 hairs cooked into the eggs so was thrown out! After the other one was checked, I tried it and it was nothing special and the home fries were ice cold! I'll admit I lost my appetite upon seeing the other sandwich so it was not much of a loss not eating more. Will not return. read more

Went for a late breakfast with a friend and we were not disappointed by our meal. It was a little busy in there on the day we went, but the service was still quick and friendly. I got the number three breakfast special which came with eggs, sausage home fries, and toast. And they had the bacon egg and cheese sandwich. Really enjoyed the meal a lot and I've been back since to also try the patty melt, which is delicious! Dining im can be a little busy and even with call in orders sometimes it might be a wait but it's totally worth it and looking forward to dining here again to enjoy the patio when the weather is nicer out. read more

This cozy cafe sits on the corner of hertel and serves up authentic American cuisine. We stopped in for a late breakfast, which they serve all day. Their outside patio was waiting for us. We started with one of their homemade donuts. These were delicious, they were heavy and cake like compared to other donuts. I tried their breakfast quesadilla, which was a decent price and a large size big enough for 2 people. Meat was extra, along with an upcharge automatically added to you bill for any item you had that contained eggs. The decent priced quesadilla increased quite a bit! I also sampled their French toast special, it was tasty, nothing stellar tho. The coffee was great and the service was too. The server was super friendly and was eager to make recommendations as we navigated through the menu. All and all it was good. If your looking for your basic American cuisine with a relaxing vibe as you people watch, give this place a try. read more

A very cute cafe with a fireplace who serves doughnuts pieces as a appetizers. I kept it simple with breakfast by getting the burrito. It's came with home fries and side of sour cream. I got the biscuits and gravy which was the special, and it was probably one of the best things I've ever had, genuinely. It's a cute little spot tucked away, perfect for a cozy breakfast/lunch. Patio is covered and looked nice, but we sat inside. The service was great and the waitress was such a sweetheart, she really added to the whole thing. Great little diner! Loved this quaint breakfast/lunch restaurant. A few tables inside, and more on their covered patio that were shielded also by the wind! But...it did get a little warm. The tables were clean and the coffee was served promptly by the friendly waitress. Our cups were greatfully refilled often! I had a bacon and tomato omlette with homefries and toast, cheese was included in the price! I think this is the first diner Ive been to in a long time where the eggs were NOT overcooked. Delicious! I am visiting family and staying on hertel, It is conveniently located so my partner and I decided to give this cute cafe a shot and man I am just blown away. Quaint on the inside and a very mom and pop energy but the staff are extremely friendly and attentive. The donuts are delicious, I have tried quite a few of the lunch and breakfast items as I have gone three days in a row and each time I am shocked at the consistency in service and quality. Truly a must enjoy cafe and a must try if you're in the area. Great prices as well-overall a great place to eat and kill some time. We never felt rushed and my only critique is I wish they had a larger social media prescence. We will be back again. read more

Stopped in this morning starving for a good home cooked meal. It's a holiday so most places were closed. This place was open and they were full but bustin their butts! The waitress, and only waitress, must be the owner? - was amazing! She was taking care of all the tables. Her daughter was hostessing. They were so friendly even though they were busy. The food was delicious. I had corned beef hash, over easy eggs, with toast and home fries. My boyfriend has the egg special. Both portions were generous but not too crazy. Really cool little place with a nice vibe. The staff is great. Their specials are good and their biscuits and gravy - though canned- is a good option if you're cold on a wet day like I was. I'll be back for their lunch menu. The waitress was amazing - while cleaning up the table she cleaned all of the salt and pepper shakers all of the ketchup dispensers etc. It's amazing that she took such notice of these things and I was impressed. read more

Alright the backstory that led my son and I to this cafe; ... It was a gloomy yet warm day out. My son wanted to a walk to the nearest restaurant but it was closed. Next was Denny's, we get there and it's a wait. They told us they are not sure but it won't be too long. We were so hungry and he didn't want to go home, so I hopped on Yelp and searched for brunch places near by Denny's and this cafe popped up. Our day was saved!!!! I called the cafe and asked if there was a waiting list and she said no. So we walked on over. As we got close to the entrance, I can see from the outside that the place is a little out of date and it looked a bit too small. However when we got inside, it was a bit more spacious. Comfortable enough to have a sit down meal. The waiter welcomed us and took us to a table. Left and came back with a menu. I ordered a breakfast sandwich with home fries and my son got pancakes with fries. It took about 20-25mins for our food to come out. The ambience in this cafe can use a little upgrade as well as the furnitures, but other then that the waiter was very nice and the service was great. She checked on us and also told us that they make their own donuts, which was awesome because my son loves donuts. We ordered it to go and I also got French Toast to go as well. Our breakfast was delicious, I literally cleaned out my plate lol ... but the donut was a bit too greasy for our liking. It's COVID, so you have to have a mask before entry and keep it on until your served. The waiter also kept hers on. Only four to a table, so bigger parties will be separated and they are strict about it. Which is great, just goes to show they are following protocols and care about everyone's safety. Cafe on the Ave is a very solid choice for a quick brunch date! There are probably 7 tables. Most of them fit 2-4. Not the best spot if you have a large crew. Their donuts are amazing. Their food is great and their atmosphere is very family-like. Service is very fast. All of their food is fresh and home made. It's a quieter atmosphere that makes for great conversation. I didn't take pictures of our breakfasts today, which I usually do. I had the 2-item omelet with cheese, home fries and toast. My husband had the 2 eggs, home fries and toast. The fried potatoes were some of the best we've had, and we've eaten breakfast at a lot of places. The bread they use isn't anything special, but is an adequate accompaniment. I cannot believe I have lived 1.5 blocks from here for years and just finally came in for breakfast! I tend to be set in my breakfast ways, and stick with what I know. But on this occasion I wanted to try something new! Right on the Hertel strip, this quaint little restaurant is doing some great things! They have about 10 tables inside, I'd guess. It's quiet and quaint and perfect for a bite to eat while walking around the avenue. My husband got the lumberjack-it comes with eggs, bacon, sausage, ham (meat trio!) and went with the pancakes option, and upgraded to banana cakes. He's usually a French toast guy, so I was surprised! But I could tell by the look on his face he will never order French toast here- not after tasting those banana cakes! He said they easily make his top 5 pancakes list. I got a Belgian waffle topped with whipped cream- Leslie Knope style, and a side of bacon. It was so good! I love a good classic waffle! We also got an orange chocolate donut to go, because they looked so inviting in the case. Divine! Our waitress was super friendly, and our food came out in record time. The food is okay, my favorite thing is the donuts they are quite good. I had the audacity to try and call in an order at 7:05 AM on a Saturday morning. The person who picked up the phone was irritated and when I asked what the specials were she said she didn't know, why was I calling so early and to call back in ten minutes. Look, I understand that employees are often rolling their eyes or irritated when they have people outside the door two minutes before they open (I worked at a liquor store where this is a regular experience) but if your hours are posted at as 7 AM and you have people calling or walking in at 7:05 AM guess what? You're open and you should be prepared to handle business. read more

I've been doing by Cafe on the Avenue got a while and Sunday was the day I finally got to stop in for breakfast. This small diner located on Hertel is small on the outside, but provides plenty of seating on the inside. The menu is pretty standard for a diner and the waitress was extremely pleasant throughout our visit. I was in the mood for pancakes and when chocolate chips are an option, those become chocolate chip pancakes real fast. The food didn't take long to come out and when it did I was pretty underwhelmed. The pancakes looked really good on the top, but the bottom of all 3 were burnt and it definitely took a ton away from the taste. Even though the pancakes were a bit of a letdown, the other food looked pretty good and the sausage I tried was pretty decent. I plan on giving this place another shot in the future, but it's certainly not going to be my first choice. read more

I haven't eaten at the Cafe, but we ordered food from there through Uber Eats. Of course, Uber Eats can't be reviewed but, for the record, I would like to say: use the service with caution and don't blame the restaurant if Uber Eats messes up. My friend at work was ordering food and offered to get me a sandwich. I'm a bit of a breakfast sandwich snob, so I couldn't resist. He ordered French toast, eggs, and bacon. Ordering through the Uber Eats app was simple enough. Order was confirmed. We got wait time. Driver gets lost. Eventually shows up... with half the order. So my friend calls Cafe on the Ave, who says that they called the driver to tell her she left a bag behind, but the driver wouldn't come back. So my friend calls Uber Eats. They give him the runaround and then eventually a credit for the amount of the food and a second delivery fee. He re-orders the sandwich. I wasn't sure whether the restaurant was going to send the same sandwich they had already made, or a fresh one. When the sandwich showed up, it was hot and fresh. Thicker style bacon with an omelette style egg. I would call this a typical Western New York kind of breakfast sandwich (vs a NYC style, fried eggs on a Kaiser roll, order it salt/pepper/no ketchup). On the whole, the sandwich was solid. My friend enjoyed everything he ordered. And I'm interested in checking this place out in person. So, 4 stars for Cafe on the Ave. and 2 stars for Uber Eats. read more

Our waitress was sunny and attentive. We ordered and got our food quickly. The portions were reasonable, not huge like most diners but we all left full. Went here this morning based on friends recommendation. It is now, our new favorite breakfast spot. We will definitely try some lunch items as well. The food was cooked to perfection, and I am a PITA when I order because it is very specific. I ordered the # 3 special. 2 eggs (I ordered mine with cheese), scrambled, extra dry. Well done bacon. Well done homefries and rye toast. Husband ordered the breakfast skillet. He couldn't even finish it all. Smaller place but they were able to seat people as they came in. It was cool inside as opposed to the muggy weather outside. They do have a small outdoor patio if you wish to eat outside. I can't say enough about the service. 2 servers that worked with each other and they both took care of us, constantly filling our coffee cups and asking how everything was or if we needed anything else. Each with smiles on their faces. Speaking of coffee, I don't drink it but for some reason I wanted a cup today. Well, let me tell you, it is their brand coffee and I ended up drinking 2 1/2 cups. Maybe that's why I'm writing so much, lol. But seriously. It was so tasty, we bought a bag of it to make at home. I will be ordering a breakfast sandwich to go sometime this week. I can't wait.! What a gem of a café. We are actually eating here because the owner, Rob, has some Airbnb's right next-door and we are staying here for a couple of days. This café is fantastic. Such a cute little place... and the two of us were greeted with the warmest welcome! I was made to feel like a part of the family.... certainly not like it was my first time there. The menu has everything breakfast and lunch: eggs and waffles and omelets and sandwiches and salads..... but the thing that brought me in was the sign saying "Homemade Donuts". Two of us ordered four of 'em to taste and test and devour. Oh.... and coffee. And, that wonderful coffee kept on coming (and with a warm smile!). The donuts we sampled were glazed, orange, raspberry, and cinnamon.
