I also had the place next door to this place on my list, but when we got there, the line to get in was basically out the door and around the corner, so I crossed them off and went here, leaving an opening for us to go somewhere else. Then the next morning, I discovered, Casa Guedes had just recently opened a second location in Vila Nova de Gaia, down the street from where we were staying, with the same name and menu and prices and everything, so I was there for dinner the next day too. Having now been to both, I can say the quality of the food was of pretty similar quality at both locations, so from here on, the rest of this review is going to be of food I had at either location. Great service at both, too, though their offshoot, at least at the time, was much less busy than this location, but the service was great anyway, regardless of them being busy. Between the two locations, and between two people sharing, we tried: A green soup that was, as I wrote in my notes, "omg". Croquettes that were also, again from my notes from January, "omg". A pernil with cheese sandwich I also just wrote down "omg" to, lol. A francesinha that was a *bit* understated compared to the one I'd had the previous day, but had, I wrote down, "excellent sauce". (I also wrote down that dipping the pernil with cheese sandwich *into* the sauce from the francesinha equaled, quote myself, "super omg".) A pork rissol with onion and port that I called "great but not amazing" (i.e. compared to everything else.) A sandwich with "soft cow cheese" (so... brie) and arugula that I wrote down as "excellent and a half" :D. And of course, being me, a note that, on request, they also had, at least as of January, great hot pepper oil (always a huge bonus.) Also had a solid pork spritz, and of course, port by itself (when in Rome, or in this case, Port), as well as a beer, cause the beer was super cheap. Just wish Superbock were a better beer (I also wrote that in my notes, specifically.) Sort of funny that their *cocktail* cocktails were fairly expensive, but that didn't matter, since their port prices, including port cocktails, i.e. spritzes, were very reasonably priced. Would definitely come back here if I were back in Porto, which I wish I were right now, lol.

The best bifana sandwich in town…read more Conga in Porto is renowned for their bifana sandwich. This is a classic pork sandwich with thin slices of marinated pork served in warm Portuguese roll bread. This introductory dine-in meal was coincidentally the most memorable meal of our trip. We came on a weekday for lunch and was seated shortly on their busy 2nd floor interior. The shredded pork slices were so tender and flavorful having been simmered to soak up all of the spice seasoning the marinade in the large pan for staff to pose with at the storefront. You can watch as the staff skewer out the meat in between the bread. The soft pillowy papo seco bread melted with the meat and was dunked in the spicy pork sauce for extra flavour. We paired this bifana sandwich (3.60 EUR) with their refreshing iced tea and a classic papas stew (3.50 EUR). The stew mixed minced pork & chicken in cornmeal thickened with pork blood. The seasoning made this surprisingly appetizing without much gamey flavour. Our only regret was not ordering more bifana sandwich instead while assuming other shops could be comparable. Simply put, this bifana sandwich was so savoury and none of the other famous shops we visited later ended up coming close. In fact even a Porto local whom we bumped into at a famous bifana sandwich spot in Lisbon flat out said Conga was better and she was right. You're not here for the service but a quick tasty bite. Skip it or hit it? Conga is worth the hype and you have to dine-in or takeout this sandwich!

The price was just for the burger and so I added the fries which came on a dipping side (they had sweet chili, horse radish mayo, ketchup) just to name a few. We actually had the sweet chili and later the horse radish mayo to try. So the steak sandwich I had was Medium (they ask how you want it cooked and went with how the Portuguese like their steaks.) It was a simple no frills sandwich. Just steak. Melted cheese on a roll. The bread was soft and complimented the meat in a 1-1 ratio which I like. Sometimes with a burger, you have more bread with a small burger in the middle. The Serra was 12 euro and thought that was a fair price for a steak sandwich. Overall, I'd give the Serra 4 stars. Service was wonderful and our waitress was attentive and helpful with her suggestions on the steak sandwich to go with. 5 stars. Overall, it was a great lunch and we enjoyed being one of the first ones to dine that day. By the time we were about to finish, more patrons were coming in to eat. Its nearest cousin is the Croque Madame only more gluttonous with multiple kinds of meat and an excess of melted cheese. Bourdain went to O Afonso to try his first Francesinha when he visited Porto. However, current consensus motivated us to come here after we watched more recent YouTube travel videos from Jamie Oliver and others. This looked like a more classic, retro-style diner like Mel's Drive-In, but there was no mistaking what everyone was ordering here whether they were tourists or locals. Tables were pretty snug, but we managed to squeeze ourselves in against the wall. We knew we had to get the 13,2€ Francesinha Santiago because it was the classic rendition (Photo 8). Fortunately they allowed us to share an order because our tablemates let us know other places around town don't allow you to do that. It was quite a sight with the fried egg on top of a monstrous sandwich covered by multiple, overlapping slices of a Portuguese cheese called queijo flamengo. The sandwich itself consisted of two thick slices of white bread toasted to golden brown. Inside was Portuguese wet-cured ham, bologna, grilled sirloin steak, fresh sausage, linguiça, and mortadella. It was all doused with their house francesinha sauce made of beef gravy, tomato paste, onion, garlic, piri piri chiles, beer, brandy, and port wine. A pile of fries surrounded the sandwich (Photo 10). Wow, I just spent two paragraphs describing the francesinha and didn't mention whether I liked it or not. I did - but I also realized it was one-and-done for me. We managed to have a couple of the 2,7€ bowls of soup. Jamie had the Caldo Verde (Spinach Soup) (Photo 9), and I had the Canja de Galinha (Chicken Soup) (Photo 7). Both were satisfying, and mine had orzo. Yes, that was enough food.
