We ran the gamut of bars in Zona Centro, and this spot made a fitting finale since it was the most high-end spot we visited. Only a half-block from the social epicenter of Jardin Allende, it provides a nice view of the top of the parroquia from their rooftop terrace where we were seated (Photo 3). The restaurant definitely had a more refined ambiance than the previous four places. We could tell it was a popular spot among wealthy American expats because the ambient voices sounded more like Chicago than Mexico. No Spanish, just English. The cocktail was a tangy treat though, a Tamarind Margarita (Photo 8), and the Jicama Taco was a satisfying veggie ending to our evening (Photo 10). DRINK / FOOD - 4 stars...unique variations on the evening's theme AMBIANCE - 4 stars...fanciest of the bar stops SERVICE - 3.5 stars...attentive enough TOTAL - 4 stars...definitely worth a revisit for a full meal RELATED - Exploring San Miguel de Allende? However, the staff didn't make us feel that way since they gave us the table with inarguably the best view of the city during the most photogenic time of the day, magic hour at sunset (Photo 3). How did we get so lucky since we made our reservation just the day before? And what better way to start than with a pair of MX$340 Carajillos, the Mexican version of espresso martinis (Photo 7). The use of Licor 43 lent a welcome sweet spiciness to the deep espresso and fit the moment perfectly. We were happy to receive a complimentary serving of warm Focaccia topped with a wedge of liver pate, olive oil, and chives (Photo 10). It was a nice surprise quickly devoured. Our first shared dish was the MX$365 Ensalada Luna, a hearty and enticing mix of greens, stracciatella cheese, speck ham, fresh peaches and figs, and quinoa in a citrus and vanilla vinaigrette (Photo 4). Our entree was the MX$406 Tacos de Lechon Rostizado, a trio of roasted suckling pig tacos with crispy skin cracklings, red onion, and fresh green salsa (Photo 5). The pork was fork tender. Nestled in a flour tortilla, the soft pulled meat stood in nice contrast to the crack of the skin. We went for a second drink, but this time a mocktail, the MX$195 Chilate, a refreshing alcohol-free blend of cacao, rice, cinnamon, and raw cane sugar in a coconut shell (Photo 6). While awaiting our dessert order, we were surprised by a complimentary Happy Anniversary dessert, a bit of a head-scratcher. We didn't say we were celebrating anything, but hey, we didn't complain. The sparkler was already lit and the staff was harmonizing. It was a chocolate ganache cake with blueberries atop puffed rice (Photo 8). That didn't stop us from enjoying the crispy-sweet MX$289 Churros with cinnamon ice cream and champurrado chocolate sauce (Photo 9), while entranced by the nighttime view (Photo 2). FOOD - 5 stars...really delicious with unique and fresh ingredients C(M)OCKTAILS - 5 stars...everything went almost too smoothly down AMBIANCE - 5 stars...the best view in town, hands down SERVICE - 5 stars...they put in a lot of extra effort TOTAL - 5 stars...for that special evening in San Miguel de Allende RELATED - Exploring San Miguel de Allende? We knew about this taco cart from PBS celebrity chef Pati Jinich as part of her travels to SMA. One of three stellar spots she recommended, the other two were Los Milagros (review: https://yelp.to/Akl564fa67) and San Agustin Chocolates y Churros (review: https://yelp.to/odzpLVN7Fg). It was about 9PM when we arrived, a good thing since they don't start firing up the grill until 7PM every evening. The seats were already filled, and there was a distinct vibe that this was a hangout for devoted regulars. We weren't aware that the full name of the business is Andy's Pastor Taco Cart even though Pati even talked about the pastor in the video clip. In fact, the prominent vertical spit was made of their specialty pastor made of thinly sliced pork shoulder. The differentiator is that it's marinated in a mixture of dried chiles (ancho, guajillo, chipotle), achiote paste, citrus juices (lime and pineapple), vinegar, and pronounced spices like cumin and oregano. Alas, we instead for a couple of the MX$35 Carne Asada Tacos (Photo 8). No question they were quite tasty but probably no better than any other popular taqueria in town. We'll just have to come back to San Miguel de Allende and do right by Andy. Sorry Pati. Came here when they just opened at around 7:20pm and was able to get some delicious tacos with no line which was great! - Bistek Taco - I really appreciate that the meats were bursting with flavor and that the beef was quite tender. At first glance, the bistek and the costilla seemed pretty similar, but you definitely could taste the steak chunks in there. - Costilla Taco - This was definitely the highlight of the three tacos and the best taco I've had in Mexico thus far, granted I've only eaten it at 3 different places. The meat was so well marinated and went very well with the tortilla and onions. - Campechanos Taco - I was not as big of a fan of this one as the meat had a reddish look to them and a spice that I was not very familiar with. Could skip. Overall, highly recommend both the costilla and bistek tacos. Also they were so affordable too at 75 pesos for 3! Definitely should not miss out when in SMA.
