Absolutely love their chili momos and the chili garlic chicken. These dishes are my indo-chin favs and they were phenomenally delicious here. The momo filling was especially notable being well-seasoned and flavorful. The heat level of the sauce was perfect. I could eat these everyday. Counter service is WYSIWYG. Space is showing its age and wear. I dont care what the seating area looks like as long as the food is good. The samosa chaat there has a good serving size and was served to me fresh. For $11 I'd say it's pretty good value. When I went it wasn't super busy so I didn't have to wait long. The restaurant itself is in sort of a food court area so nothing fancy. Food: Haven't been to THIS location, but having gone to Northeastern, the Chutney's location there was DELICIOUS. Every food item that I've tried from there was amazing - dumplings, pizza, rice dishes, all incredible, no complaints at all. It is hearty, filling, warm food, good for all occasions but it is heavy. However it's worth it - portions are sufficient for what you pay for. I'd definitely come back to the Harvard Square location as I was so so sad when the Chutney's near Northeastern's campus closed... literally one of my favorite hidden gems. We ordered samosas from Chutney's as a snack today, and it was delicious! The inside was seasoned perfectly and not too salty and the outside had a nice crisp on the outside. I was also really happy that it was vegan! I didn't care too much for the mint sauce, but the best part was definitely the tamarind sauce. These people scammed me out of $22. I came in with about 20 minutes to eat before seeing a show. After I placed my order, the staff talked amongst themselves, joked around, filled online orders, and never so much as started on my order. When I had to go and asked for a refund, a staff member said my order was almost done, even though I could see they that they had not started my order and he was holding an empty pan. So I left with no food and no refund. Will try to dispute the transaction through the credit card company. read more

For a fast food joint, the food they provide is not bad. Prices are reasonable with good food portions. However they can improve on the taste and quality. Chutneys paneer wrap- the wrap is huge and the staff are generous with the fillings, you can select what goes into the wrap-rice, veggies and sauce. Samosa chat- it was very disappointing. It tasted like frozen samosas were reheated. The plate was hot, but the content inside was close to warm. And it's the first time I have seen Rajma beans added to the chat, which is very strange. Vegetable Momo platter-this was the only dish which we really liked. It was fresh, hot and spicy. Masala chai - decent taste, but the staff took initiative to warm and make it extra hot. This used to be a family and friends' favorite whenever we visited Boston. My wife would be drooling about their momos ( Indian style dumplings) for days. In our latest visit during the pandemic, every item in the menu tasted substantially different and slightly worse. The momos were bland and the sauce watered down. But when I arrived yestersay 01-20-2022 at around 9:45pm the dude there saw us and switched off the lights. Then he came out and was repeatedly kept saying : WE ARE CLOSED in a rude tone. I arrive here at 11:40am and order a samosa. Guy cashier is not pleased with my $1.50+tax purchase but whatever (I paid with cash, so what's there to be annoyed about?). He says I'll have to wait 5-6 minutes for the samosa to be done/made. I wait for 10 minutes. He doesn't call me over or anything, so I get up to inquire about my food. The guy says nothing but opens the oven and retrieves the samosa for me. He boxes it with the sauce and hands it over with a half-hearted, "Thanks... (for nothing)" The service is subpar. I actually love Indian food and I believe this place is absolutely subpar. Oil separation is a tell-tale sign of trash curry/vindaloo/masala. Sauce is the most important component to the cuisine and it literally looked like vomit - not appetizing. The samosas and dumplings came after the combo dishes and I think it's annoying when there's no meal ritual or consistency. There were no herbs and the spice was overpowering in the curry dishes. Doesn't hurt to throw some potatoes into the curries either if the side salads are small enough to be a snack for baby rabbits. 0/10 recommend. The perfect quick meal. Chutneys feels a bit like an Indian chipotle, which is how some of the bowls look like but it's because of how much you can customize your meal! You order in an assembly line and pick your type of dish (wrap vs rice plate etc) and your entree (from lamb to chicken to vegetarian options!); there's even extra sauces to flavor your meal. I believe I got the lamb curry last time and was so satisfied! It's a very affordable place in the heart of Harvard Square. They also sell samoas and mango lassi; I tried both of them and loved them. Samosas were simple but so satisfying - perfect balance of vegetables and crispy skin. I've been back a couple times now and love coming here for a quick bite after a busy day in the city. This place eats shit. To start with, the place looks like a prison diner. Chain link walls between the customers and the cashier. A dining room that has clearly been through hell and never been addressed. The Subway across the court has better ambience, and it basically has all the charm of a bus station. The food has never risen above mediocre. The tikka masala is unlike anything I've ever had at another Indian restaurant, but hey, they can have their own twist. It's not that good, tho. Obviously the nearby sit down restaurants would be better, but they'd also be $19 rather than $13. Even considering that it's not really worth the $13. Maybe $8? What really shines, tho, is the service. I use Snackpass to order ahead from places in Harvard Square because I only have so much time to go get it. I place the order, it tells me how long to wait, I give them an extra 15% time, then head over and pick up and I'm back to work ASAP. That does not happen here. Today I ordered, it said 7 minutes, I got there 15 minutes later and they hadn't even started my order. Without saying anything to me they went to start the order. At no point did anyone say they'd missed it or did they apologize. I had to discern this for myself, mostly made obvious by them looking down and refusing to look my way while they made the food. I give these guys a try now and again and always regret it, but today they wasted my time, got me back to work late and they gave me the wrong food. They're spectacularly bad at doing what they're supposed to do. So bad that it makes me wonder if it's their goal. If so, god damn, fam, first place! read more

There's always this guy who's there in the evening who I swear is drugged up all the time. His words are generally incomprehensible, eyes are usually red, and movements are clumsy. Honestly he makes me a little uncomfortable, but I tend to just smile and nod. I love the idea of fast food Indian so I used to frequently come to this spot, but honestly I've become disillusioned and now I see Chutney's for what it is. Indian Chipotle sums up Chutney's perfectly. This location is inside the "Garage" complex in Harvard Square. You start at one end of the assembly line and pick the consumption method (paratha wrap- kind of like a flatwrap/tortilla, rice bowl, or nanini- a wrap with naan bread), the main type of filling (vegetarian, chicken, or lamb), and then choose your toppings (lettuce, tomato, onion, cilantro, jalapeno, cucumber, or sauces). Within a few minutes your order is ready for you to pay for and consume. The only thing that took a bit longer to prepare are the Momos, which are essentially like giant dumplings. I got the spinach chicken rice bowl (they even have brown rice as an option!) with cucumber, tomato, jalapeno, and cilantro. It was delicious and came in a nice portion. A friend and I also shared an order of the chicken momo dumplings, which took about 15 minutes to get ready, but they were also very delicious and juicy and could be an entire meal by themselves. Only thing I was not the biggest fan of were the sauces. To me they were either too sweet, or too bland ..just not so interesting in flavors. I have always complained to my friends, acquaintances and colleagues about the lack of good Indian options in the Boston area, but if there is a place I'd wholeheartedly recommend for Indian food, it has to be chutneys. This is not a "fine-dining" restaurant; rather, it is supposed to be a place where you'd want to have Indian street food. I usually get the following: the bhel puri, the samosa chat or the chicken tikka rice bowl. The bhel puri is puffed rice with some sauces and vegetables and I love it. Chutneys does a good job with it. The samosa chat is also well prepared, and you can customize the spicy ness and the sauces that go in it beyond what they add. The bhel puri is very light but gives you the spice kick that I sometimes crave. The samosa chat is a little heavier but I have it now and then if I'm sharing it with my partner. For the chicken tikka rice bowl, I get mine made in a specific way. I choose white rice, tikka sauce, the chicken tikka, and then top it with cucumbers, onions, some tomatoes and jalapeños. I typically get the "firecracker" sauce on it. It's spicy and creamy with the tikka sauce. The chicken is usually very tender and nice. It goes really well with mango lassi and is my go to option for a cold night and some chilling at home with TV. Quite an invigorating experience. As soon as I started my order I was given a "kids meal" portion of rice. Now don't be fooled...it's quite easy to see that I am a man of girth. These gentle servers were just making sure that I was watching my waist line. When I remarked that I'd like some more rice they slyly made sure that they added a reason full more. They were amazingly able to comply with my request AND ensure that the scale would not be quite so disappointing tomorrow morning. Something though ..something was missing. I couldn't quite tell what it was. My immune system is always in need of new challenges to make itself stronger. Thankfully the cashier remembered to cough on my change (without covering her mouth!) before she gave it to me. She open mouth coughed in front of me several more times as we're completing the transaction. I'll rest easily tonight knowing that my body is being put through it's paces and is being prepared to rise stronger and fitter tomorrow morning. Unfortunately, the rating is so low because the restaurant failed to deliver an open palm slap to my face before I left. Groupon / Yelp Deals...what a deadly combo. So basically, the best way to describe this place is, an Indian Chipotle. Since Chipotle is BOMB and Indian food is also good (note: I am not the biggest fan of Indian food so if you love Indian food like my friends, You will LOVE it here) this place is pretty fantastic. You can get a wrap (aka basically a burrito) of a bowl and can choose between vegetarian, chicken, or lamb and they're all cooked in different amazing styles. The best thing, there is like 10 sauces to choose from and you can add as many as you want!!! Lastly, pretty good Indian drinks are sold here. My favorite is their chicken curry rice bowl, it's really good with the vegetables they give you.
