Checking into the facility, I noticed it looked a bit old and had walls being repainted BUT it looked and smelled very clean. Despite this, I has my reservations about leaving my mom. It was the first time that we had been in a situation where we required extensive nursing care outside of our home. Then, I met Lela. She is a nurse manager at the facility. Immediately she sensed my apprehension. I expressed that I didn't want to leave my mom. She encouraged me and offered reassurance. She said, "Maybe the building needs TLC and we're working on it but, I guarantee you, the people here are the best at what they do and you're mom will excel." So, although I was hesitant, I left my mom, and returned the next day and the next day and the day after that.... What I witnessed was truly remarkable. Having been a patient and being a Nurse Practitioner, I can tell you that medicine isn't always kind...except at Sonterra Health Center. Every single staff member that the facility has amassed CARES for their patients. They take their lunch breaks in their patient's rooms if they notice someone feels lonely, they come in with a smile at the beep of every call bell, they gladly change out food trays if the least bit of disappointment is expressed. Every single person has gone above and beyond to support my mother as she heals. They even provided my mother with a volunteer opportunity to do some social service, which lifted her spirits. The testament to the staff was that when it came time to go home, she didn't want to leave! I will never use another facility for skilled nursing. Hands down, the best place!!!

I want to be fair: the CNAs, nurses, and therapists were some of the kindest, most compassionate and hardworking people I have ever met. Many work extremely long shifts doing physically and emotionally demanding work. My criticism is not directed at them. My concern is management. I became especially concerned about an elderly resident who told me she was terrified of her roommate, who has Alzheimer's. She reported being physically attacked and waking at night with her roommate standing over her threatening her. She became so frightened of her room that she sometimes preferred sitting outside in the Texas heat. I personally approached the facility director, explained the situation, and asked him to intervene. He promised to look into it. Before I was discharged, I confronted him again and asked whether this woman's situation would actually be resolved. After leaving, I checked on her and learned that the problem still had not been meaningfully resolved. Sonterra later contacted me about my evaluation. I again explained the situation and was assured someone would investigate. I checked again afterward and was told that nobody had come to see her as promised. This particularly bothers me because this resident appears to have nobody consistently advocating for her. I cannot know why her concerns have received so little attention, and I will not accuse anyone of motives I cannot prove. What I do know is that a frightened, vulnerable resident repeatedly asked for help, I personally asked management to help her, and I still saw no meaningful resolution. During my stay, I also had concerns about the food, insects in resident areas, staffing levels, and what I personally observed as a lack of meaningful interaction between upper management and residents. My advice to families is simple: there are wonderful frontline caregivers at Sonterra, but advocate strongly for your loved one. Visit frequently, ask questions, pay attention, and don't assume management knows what is happening simply because staff have been told. I have written commendations for Sonterra employees who provided me outstanding care because good people deserve recognition. But vulnerable residents also deserve someone willing to speak when something is wrong. Every resident matters, whether they have money, family, influence, or nobody at all. They are human beings deserving dignity and safety. I tried repeatedly to address this internally before writing publicly. You get out of it what you put in. So many people come to a…read moreplace like this expecting luxury spa treatments and effortless "magic pill" solutions to their addiction. That is not reality. Starlite is a place where you are expected to put in effort if you WANT to get well. The facilities are older, but are comfortable and are undergoing major renovations and improvements. The staff are pleasant and supportive, but they are not here to pamper you so you will want to stay longer or come back again and again. They are here to keep you focused on recovery and getting your head screwed back on straight. There are multiple therapies available because not everybody is going to respond to one style. Once again, though, an addict has to put in the effort to recover as therapy does not work passively. This is a great place to get away from whatever caused the addiction, and to work toward recovery. It removes you from the world where the drug/alcohol was available AND gives you the time to think about and work on getting well so when you leave, you can face that world again with the understanding of how not to slip back into the addiction thinking. If you really want to get well, this place really can work.

It's in the hill country and there's a pretty view overlooking the hills in the distance. They have a pool, a store that's open a couple times a week. The classes are ok, but like I said I preferred La Ha over Starlite. I was really enjoying my most recent stay there when my insurance was suddenly no longer accepted so I had to transfer elsewhere. Would I choose Starlite again? Probably not but then again I hope I never need rehab again. So if you're thinking of going, it's not a bad place but definitely shop around and definitely do not go to Ripple Ranch in Spring Branch.

And the only reason for that is to offset all the negative reviews. They have multiple complaints against them by family members of the residents. Don't leave your loved ones at this place. They are understaffed and under qualified to take care of anyone. I have a family member that has been here a couple weeks and within that time, I have seen him decline drastically & have seen so many unacceptable & inhumane treatment of not only him, but the other residents. It has been excruciatingly hot outside and there central air was broken for at least one week that my loved one has been at this place. You have to literally stand there and make them give your loved-one a bath. Clothing, food and snacks have gone missing/stolen from their room. They didn't have running water for at least two days. We had one resident there asking us if we knew when they were going to turn the water back on. When they do have running water, dirt comes out of the sink pipes. Because of how disoriented my relative is, he actually has drank this filthy water. We're constantly having to take our loved one bottled water because of how dehydrated and thirsty he is. They even have the maintenance guy filling in for the CNA's, someone that has no formal training. My loved one is unsupervised, has fallen multiple times because he is hopped up on meds that they shouldn't even be on, prescribed by the nursing home dr - which by the way is only there once a week. My relative has already tried to escape a couple of times, and was literally able to make it out the door. That only goes to show that there isn't enough staff working there. I don't even know how this place can remain open. This place needs to be shut down. If I had power of attorney, Our loved one would no longer be staying here. What should have been a five day rehabilitation to get this person's meds adjusted has now turned into a nightmare. They have been there for over two weeks and has progressively declined instead of getting better. He also has an ear infection that we've been telling them about for over two weeks and nothing is being done about it. Even a lot of the people that have been either residing there and/or working there for a longer period of time, say that they don't even know how they have not been shut down. They get a bunch of people to work there that come in from temp agencies and they can't get anyone to stay. completely understaffed and under qualified people. And it isn't just with my own relative, we have seen other residents not being taken care of properly. No one is taking care of these people the way that they should be taken care of. You can have your light on in your room and no one will come to help you for hours, if they even come in at all. When I was trying to leave, and my relative was gripping my arm, not to go, I tried to get help from one of the nurses or a staff member. I thought maybe they could try to distract my relative and or talk to him, but when I asked for help I was told-and I quote "what do you want me to do about it?" And when I asked about getting a nurse to go in there to help, I was told again - and I quote "what do you expect them to do about it?" We're constantly having to take our own cleaning supplies to sweep and mop my relatives room. It's heartbreaking to see the treatment that they are giving my relative and also the other residents. This place is a joke. I need to add that before he came to this place, he was living on his own, drove his own car, made his own meals, & took care of himself. He was originally taken to the hospital because he had a reaction to his meds, then admitted to this facility to transition from hospital to his home. This was only supposed to be a temporary situation.

[the backstory] I've…read morebeen suffering from a major hip problem due to Osteonecrosis for a couple years. After a pretty severe fall, the "I can deal with it" turned into a significant hit to my quality of life. I could no longer walk without a cane and insane amounts of Oxycontin twice a day. I put up with the cane and Oxycontin through 4 MRIs, 3 CAT scans and more x-rays than I've ever had in my life. After 11 months of different surgical teams, they finally decided that I needed a total hip arthroplasty. So I had my anterior anthroplasty done done by an amazing and talented team of surgeons. I went into surgery at 0730 and was convalescing in my hospital room six hours later. When the physical therapist came in to evaluate me a couple hours later (about ten hours after the start of my surgery), he was happy to see me using a walker to get from my bed to the latrine and back with little assistance. Fast forward to the next morning. After a visit from the surgeons and anesthesiologist, I was deemed ready to be discharged. And I was very happy for that diagnosis. Happy, that is, until my insurance company said I'd be discharged to home. Wait, what? Home? I could only get out of bed with assistance, walk twenty feet with a walker a considerable pain, and the insurance company was sending my home? WTF? So I called the mediator to ask why would I be sent home to a 100 year old house with poor access to necessary facilities (toilet/shower). After a lot of back and forth. insurance company relented and offered a week of in-patient physical/occupational therapy. [end backstory] I was released from the hospital and transferred to Select via ambulance 36 hours after surgery. I don't really remember much from my arrival except that the transfer from the ambulance gurney to my private room bed was painless. Since I was transferred on a Friday night, there wasn't a doctor to greet me, but the entire staff made me feel welcomed. My first night in Select had a visit from an RN every two hours to check my vitals, assess my pain level, and provide prescriptions as required. My first full day in Select was pretty amazing, with the entire staff checking in on me on a two and four hour schedule. The nursing staff helped me stay in front of my significant pain with immediate and long lasting Oxycontin. I was kept on a four hour schedule of pain medication for the first four days in rehab, then as warranted. Even though I arrived on a Friday night after closing time, I was scheduled for physical and occupational therapy the next morning. I had my OT first thing in the morning just to see how I could take care of myself (getting out of bed, walking, going to the bathroom etc). Obviously I needed a lot of work on those items. The OT set goals for me to meet over the next five days (get out of bed without assistance, walk to the bathroom without assistance etc). Then I had my PT appointment. The PT, like the OT, assessed my abilities and set goals for my stay. [I should mention that 90% of the PT/OTs are bona fide doctors. Don't let their youth fool you.] I had an initial PT/OT on my weekend arrival, but then was assigned a dedicated PT and a dedicated OT for the rest of my stay. Both of them were amazing. I've never been in a rehab facility, and only have memories of a grandparent being in one. If I was sent to a rehab facility like my grandmother, I would have been a sad camper. Her [my grandmother's] rehab facility smelled of urine, was staffed by angry people (angry to the point of caustic) and was a horror show on every level. Select really changed my mind about what rehab hospitals can be. Every.single.person I came into contact with, from my assigned MD, to RNs to PTs and OTs to CNAs and housekeepers to kitchen staff were incredible. I complained about the first meal served to me and received a visit from the kitchen director to figure out what I needed over the course of my stay. I wasn't quite ready to be released after my first five days, so the in-house advocate worked on my behalf to extend my stay for another five days. She even set up all of the home care devices I needed upon release to my house. Here's the bottom line about Select Rehabilitation Hospital. I told my mom and her husband that if they ever needed to in-patient rehabilitation, this is the place they should advocate for. Select has a top of the line rehabilitation staff, an amazing support staff (MD/RN/CNA/Kitchen/Housekeeping) that provides a positive and whole-person approach to the rehabilitation process. After less than one month from a total hip arthroplasty, I am virtually cane free (except for long walks), thanks to the dedication and professionalism of the staff. I should add that there were patients in worse shape that me that I witnessed amazing improvements in their physical abilities over the short time I stayed here. Highly recommended.

That's not counting my out of pocket for office visits, prescriptions, vaccinations, etc.... So closer to $7500? Now, I pay $175 a month for my son and self with Cibolo Family. I also signed up for vision & dental through work and a HSA Acct ($100/month). I also got a basic Major Medical Policy in case of a car wreck or some other major medical issue ($30/month). I'm saving $425/month in premiums. And there are no deductibles (saving $3000/year). Also, I love that, when I call with an issue, I am almost always seen the same day. Blood work, basic labs are done there and included. And the one time I needed to see a specialist, Dr. Hodnett called to make my appointment (the next morning) and arranged for a significant discount of that office visit ( it was only $100- still saved $325 that month!). Plus, you get to know your doctor and visa versa. I love Dr. Hodnett. He's proactive. Actually listens to my concerns and has never made me felt like he was being dismissive or placating me like a child (like my previous dr in town did). And the entire staff - at both locations - are so wonderful! They're always pleasant, and have gone above and beyond to help get us what we need when we need it. We're about to start our 2nd year with Dr. Hodnett and CFM. I tell everyone to check them out! I'll never go back to big corp medicine.

This post is going to be a bit lengthy, but I feel its imperative to be as detailed as possible. I…read morerequested a refill of my medications a little over a couple of weeks ago. I take a couple different types of medications for diabetic neuropathy and have taken the same medication for more than 2 years. Life without this medication is very uncomfortable and painful to say the least. My medication was denied by the doctors office because Its been sometime since I was last seen in office, so they were requiring a visit. I guess NOT going to the doctor is now a bad thing. Nonetheless, I agreed and set up an appointment. The day for my appointment came and went when I realized the day after that I missed it. I immediately called the office to let them know that I was very sorry for my absence, but I had an emergency. My 11 year old Son's school nurse called to let me know he wasn't well, had a fever and had thrown up. I immediately went to pick him up and forgot that I had an appointment. I am now going to preface my Son's situation. My Son has a terminal disease and wheel chair bound for the remainder of his life. So, his needs will ALWAYS come before mine. The receptionist indicated that she would need to speak to the office manager because she wouldn't be able to reschedule me until the hold within the system was lifted. I also made sure to mention my medication wasn't refilled and I needed to get get on schedule at their earliest convenience. I again apologized for the oversight. I was just taking care of my kiddo. The following day I received a call from the Office and the receptionist said she would be happy to get me re-scheduled, but first had to collect for the no call fee, $75 dollars. I immediately responded with, a you have to be kidding me response. She shared that she had no option and referred me to the office manager who said she would not waive this fee because they waived this fee once before back in June last year. We no longer live in a world of compassion or forgiveness, especially when a co-pay or deductible is in place. I had every intention of seeing the doctor and would have gladly paid in advance for the re-scheduling of the visit, but $75 because I missed. What makes matters worse is I have been in pain since Friday last week because they held my prescriptions hostage. These medications aren't pain killers or muscle relaxers, but they do make a difference in my life. If you value yourself and want to be valued my your physician, this is not the practice for you. back to the drawing board.

My mother was encouraged to come to this facility to recover after knee surgery. She was told she…read morewould get excellent care here and that there were nothing but strong reviews. We didn't have that experience at all. The rooms were small and shared. My mother's roommate said that she had been waiting for batteries for her tv remote for 4 hours and that the tv was stuck on sports and on a high volume. She was still waiting for a walker as she had already been there for a couple of days and had asked for bedrails but they would not be there for a few more days. She also mentioned she had been waiting for hours for pain meds. When my mother asked about bed rails they also said it would be three days before she would have them. Upon arrival in her room there was a pair of dirty socks on the nightstand and a nebulizer that had a used mask and medication. We pointed it out to the staff and they shrugged and left them where they were found. My mother was in pain and we asked about medication. They offered Tylenol around 7pm and we had to request an ice pack for her knee. We asked about her evening meds and they said they hadn't received anything- we were concerned because my mother is diabetic and has other health conditions that require regular medication. The staff seemed unconcerned and dismissive. We received a call from my mother at 1:30 AM that there were bugs crawling on the walls, the room was hot, and they had not provided her with pain medication or another ice pack. She felt feverish around 3:00AM and we went to the facility and they hesitated letting us in as hours of visitation are only 8am-8pm. They had the nerve to tell my dad that my mom did nothing but complain. We were shocked at the lack of compassion. We felt so sorry for the people who rely on this place for rehabilitation and also for their long term residence. We strongly ask case managers who recommend this place to actually go visit and see where they are sending patients for rehabilitative care.
