Ciboney is another Cuban spot that had dropped off takeout menus by our office, and which I've enjoyed from a distance. Having had to work late last night, I finally decided to give them a go in situ. They're located in a strip shopping center in PSN (Palm Springs North) / North Miami Lakes, and can be a little hard to find. Despite arriving around 10 (close to closing time), service was pleasant and immediate. I started off with the requisite Cuban bread service, though it could have used a touch more butter. My mariquitas (green plantain chips) were the perfect appetizer: thin cut, crispy and with the garlic oil dipping sauce. The Milanesa (Cuban chicken parmesan) was huge, juicy and fully covered with ham and swiss cheese. It could have been a little sweeter but still great. They didn't skimp on the maduros (sweet plantains) and the moros (black beans and rice) had the just-greasy sheen that makes perfection. My flan was jiggly, not overly sweet and garnished with whipped cream (great presentation). Despite the fact it was late at night, I enjoyed my cortadito (and still slept like a baby when I got home). They have a mini stage with a synth keyboard, and a musician did play instrumental covers of some Spanish ballads. Wall and restaurant decor is mostly Cuban memorambilia, and the ceiling is decorated with black bean bags. Very funky, and kitschy cool, I enjoyed it. read more

This WAS one of my favorite restaurants. I will no longer be ordering from here. Today I went in for pick up with my girlfriend. As we walked in, a short server with short black hair says to her coworkers in Spanish "look at that, a girl like that with him." And then they start laughing. (I'm black, she's Latina) She and I both understand Spanish. They kept staring at us and talking shit in Spanish until I headed over toward them. My girlfriend holding me back let them know that I knew what was going on and what was being said. They had that "oh shit" look on their faces. This establishment has RACIST and judgmental workers, that will stare at you, talk about you in Spanish and make you uncomfortable. Also this isn't the only time I've felt uncomfortable at Ciboney. Came for a gathering after a baptism with family and friends. This place is very small and the service was pretty bad. The food was good however, when I took my son to the bathroom there was a kitchen employee standing by the sink with a box of cornstarch patting down her armpits with the cornstarch. As if that wasn't bad, she had spilled some on the ground and then bent down to sort of wipe it with her bare hands. To top it off, she then clapped her hands together and walked out. I usually stick to the same dishes, but everything I've ordered I've enjoyed. My favorite is the bistec empanizado (breaded steak), but the breaded chicken, churrasco, and lechon asado are also good.
