I remember years ago, in my youth, when I was in Little League. Every time we won a game our coach…read moretreated us to a hot dog. Those they sold at the park. It tasted so good. Since then I have enjoyed eating this simple yet very American food. So today when I was looking for a place to eat and saw "Dillons Hot Dogs & More," I decided to stop by and give it a try. Located in the Brookside Shopping Center on 6431 Williamson Road in Roanoke, Virginia, This small, laid back restaurant, is open Mondays through Saturdays from 10:00am to 6:00pm and Fridays until 7:00pm. It serves lunch and dinner. I went on a Friday early evening and the first thing I noticed was how busy it was with people eating there and even more people ordering takeouts. Who seemed to be the owner was up front taking the orders from a counter at that time. He immediately greeted me with a warm welcome and after I told him this was my first time there, and he explained the value meals that included fries and a soda for a set price. I ended up ordering a Bacon Cheeseburger with Fries, and a Coke. And also a Hot Dog with melted cheese, chili, and chopped onions. He told me to take a seat at one of the booths and that he would bring me the food when ready. From the booth I was seated at, I could see the flames cooking the food back in the kitchen. A young lady was cooking at the time with another gentleman helping her back there. They handed me the soda as I waited and I reviewed a small paper menu that I took with me to the table. When the food arrived it looked and tasted very fresh and appetizing. The Burger bun was nice and soft. It contained a good size patty, with fresh lettuce and a nice big slice of tomato. The fries was crunchy on the outside and soft in the inside. The bacon on top was plenty and very meaty. And the Hot Dog looked and tasted just fine. It was a regular size good quality meat Hot dog with the right ingredients that give it flavor and served on a fresh and soft Hot Dog roll. I was going to have dessert afterwards because it said they were well known for there homemade desserts, but I only saw two types on the counter and decided not to. This is a good place, nothing fancy, but with good food, for when you're in the mood for good home cooking food. They also have Subs, Sandwiches, and Seafood Baskets. Everything at very reasonable prices. Come alone or bring along family and friends. And be ready for a good meal that will leave you full and satisfied.

After having observed the long lines at their drive through, reading they are opened until 4:00AM,…read moreand asking around: What do you think about Cook Out, and getting a smile and positive reaction, I had to go visit one evening for dinner and experience for myself a dining experience there. Housed in a large brick building near Crossroads in Roanoke, Virginia, the front of the building faces Hershberger Rd and has large windows and an outdoor seating area to use in good weather. On the back side of the building the drive through is located and a large parking lot. The entrance to the restaurant is on its side under a bright red and white sign high above. As I entered the place was very clean and two low walls guided you to the ordering counter. Above the counter is the menu and customers stood there reading the menu and picking their order. When it was my turn to order, the friendly order taker answered some questions I had and I ordered a Burger tray with Onion Rings and Slaw, a Peach Cobler Shake, and an extra Cook Out Hot Dog. The order was efficiently taken and charged and then I moved in front of a window on the side to wait to be called to receive my order. After having my order, I picked a table and went to sit down. Even though the size of the burger was not too big, the bun was fresh and soft, and the beef patty was also very fresh. Later I found out that they make their own meat patties from fresh ground beef daily and distribute them to the restaurant. They are never frozen. The quality of the food and reasonably low price seem to be the key to attracting loyal customers. Watching the happy customers coming in as I was eating, made me think back of my childhood, and how much I would enjoy eating an inexpensive hot dog or hamburger at a cook out. It doesn't take an expensive restaurant or food to have an amazing dining experience. The four onion rings served were also were enough, considering the price. The Peach Cobler was very good but too thick to drink with a straw. I got a spoon and ate it like an ice cream with the spoon. At the end, I enjoyed my dinner, was relatively full, and spent very little money having quality food. And I discovered the secret to all the happy return customers that keep frequenting this restaurant. So for all of the above reasons, I recommend this place. After all, everyone loves a good cook out.

This is one of Roanoke's must beautiful architectural designed Mexican restaurants…read more A third generation family-owned and operated restaurant from the first family to bring Mexican cuisine to Roanoke in 1986. It is well known for its authentic Mexican cuisine, including fajitas, tacos, and margaritas. Agave Azul originally opened as El Rodeo in 2001. Then in 2019 the Lopez family rebranded the restaurant, changing its name and design but retaining their style and original recipes. The change in redesign was made to better reflect the way one should experience Mexican Food in contemporary society, and to honor the vibrant, evolving culture of contemporary Mexican cuisine. As I arrived today in my pearl white Lexus and parked it in their very convenient parking lot, I couldn't help but to admire the beautiful structure of the restaurant's architectural design of its building. Once inside, a welcoming gentleman greeted me and took me to one of the booths next to the windows of the dining room and handed me a copy of the menu. Shortly after a friendly young lady came by and introduced herself as my server and took my drink order. I ordered a virgin mango margarita. While she went to request it at the bar, one of their employees brought me their complimentary basket of chips along with the tiny bowl of salsa. What can I say, they were irresistible and amazingly delicious. I found myself looking at the menu and at the same time dipping my chips in the salsa and eating them. When the margarita arrived it looked amazing. So fresh that one could see the lime slices juice dripping onto the table. To dine I ordered the Parrillada Fajitas and asked her to also include chorizo for an extra charge. She acknowledged that could be arranged and went to the kitchen to place my order. She then disappeared. I suspect they had given her a large table in the other dining room because the restaurant was not so full and yet she took so long to bring me my fajitas that when they arrived they were not sizzling hot with smoke coming out of the cast iron skillet. Before I had time to mention this to her, she had quickly disappeared again. I tasted the fajitas and they were so good that I ate them and didn't bother complaining. Besides I was so hungry that I couldn't wait for them to remake them just to see the smoke coming out of the skillet when served. But this was a bit disappointing because it was the first time it had happened at any Mexican restaurant before, and I felt it took away from the excitement of watching your fajitas being served sizzling hot. A side plate came with delicious Mexican rice, refried beans, lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream, and guacamole. Also I received some hot flower tortillas wrapped inside a piece of aluminum paper. The time went by and I had finished with my meal and my server hadn't showed up. I was looking forward to having a dessert. When she shows up she does so with my bill. I told her I was planning on having a dessert if it was possible, and that if she could please clear my table. I ordered a Xango Cheese Cake that was supposed to come drizzled with caramel and chocolate. But instead it came drizzled with sugar and honey. After having a bite of it I didn't seem to mind because it tasted so good like this as well. Then another long wait to get the bill. Luckily in this restaurant you paid the bill at the cashier's counter. It's a pity that I let my dining experience escalate up to this point. I hope the owner and manager of the restaurant reads my review and takes action so this doesn't happen again. Next time I will definitely not allow this to happen again. In conclusion the food tasted very good but did not arrive sizzling hot; the ambiance was pleasant but lacked the Mexican background music, and the service was definitely lacking, but I'm willing to give this restaurant another try honoring its generational history.

We found this place through Yelp for an early Saturday dinner. The restaurant was full of customers at 5:30pm - so we ordered takeout to bring back to our hotel. The service is warm with a family-friendly vibe. I would strongly recommend the vaca frita - which was outstanding and ideal for carryout. The red beans and rice were also delicious. I tried the ropa vieja (which is a bit more messy for takeout - but a great option if you're dining in). We also enjoyed the vanilla flan dessert which was very sweet (ideal with coffee). Overall, this was a great surprise in Roanoke - we hope to return to Cuban Island Restaurant on our next trip to Blacksburg, VA.
