The Great Fast Food Fried Chicken Taste Test Testing all of the fried chicken sandwiches at C'ville fast food chains. Scoring for looks, bun, juiciness, sauce, flavour, and texture! Me - 18/30 Nice potato bun but this was a bit small, a bit thin and a bit over fried. And those zigzag fries felt like they were out of a frozen bag of McCain's Superfries. Given the hype, the fast casual almost sit-down ambience, and the clientele - I was expecting better. This seemed like high class fast food fried chicken. Kid #1 - 19/30 Gave this a shrug for juiciness and a "ok I guess" for the bun and wondered "where's the sauce?" But then again, he's 12. At least he recognized this was better than Cookout. Kid #2 - 14/30 This was the third sandwich of the day so he was really more enthralled with the self-serve pop machine and the Mr Beast stand-up poster. Special note: Zax-Tea and Hi-C? That's a nice change at the pop machine. And maybe it's just me that but drink cup was just the right mix between not reusable and not recyclable. So very American. Final ranking, out of 1. Raising Cane's 2. Bojangles 3. Zaxby's 4. Cookout 5. Chik-Fil-A

A family-owned restaurant that has been serving locals, travelers, and late-night crowds from its classic 10-stool lunch counter since 1930, and continues to be strictly cash-only. A restaurant that has never been remodeled and whose menu has never been expanded, but that in this lies its real charm. A restaurant that despite economic hardship, tries never to raise prices and remain affordable. A restaurant that many people go to it because of their food, others because of their prices, and others like me this morning, because of the experience to sit at its counter and appreciate its character and charm while enjoying a classic breakfast of three fried eggs over easy with bacon and white toast basted with butter. That restaurant was and continues to be the iconic Texas Tavern, located in the heart of Downtown Roanoke. This morning I drove my pearl white Lexus up to it and parked in front of the sidewalk at the parallel parking with a one-hour limit. There is so much history behind this place that the excitement of the moment made the breakfast experience more momentous. Once inside, a young gentleman who has been working there for over two years now greeted me and immediately made me feel at home. He took my order and almost at the same time started making my toast and frying my eggs. In no time at all I had my order in front of me. I noticed and made him aware that one egg was missing. He made it right by frying me another egg over easy and I didn't mind because of his positive attitude and very unique personality. He also asked me how I'd like my coffee and prepared it just as requested with two creams and three sugars. Every one of the three eggs were perfectly fried over easy and I sprinkled a salt and pepper mixture over them. The bread of the toast was so fresh and tasty braised in butter. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review to get a better sense of the place and the high-quality of their food. I'm looking forward to returning one day at lunch time to taste some of their menu items of which they are known for. Starting with their Cheesy Western, the tavern legendary trademark burger served with a fried egg, cheese, pickles, and a sweet-and-tangy homemade cabbage relish. Or maybe a bowl of their secret-recipe chili served with onions. Or their trademark hot dog served Coney Island-style with chili, relish, mustard, and unions. All comfort food that make you feel good and bring a sense of nostalgia, warmth, and satisfaction. I highly recommend this small, historic, eatery for a one-of-a-kind, memorable, dining experience. One that you'll cherish and hold dear forever.

After all, hot dogs are deeply embedded in America's food culture. After hearing so much about this local family restaurant and the important role it has played in the lives of the people of Roanoke and its visitors throughout the years, I decided to go visit for myself, explore the restaurant, taste its food, study its interior design and ambiance, and experience for myself a taste of the famous Roanoke Weiner that everyone is talking about. First of all, I was very impressed by the cleanliness of the restaurant and how it managed to mix the old with the new in its contemporary interior design, furnished with new but furniture design from the restaurants of the 60's, and souranded with artworks and photographs relevant to the long successful history of the restaurant and it's founder. Branded as the Hot Dog King and Roanoke's Oldest Restaurant, customers of all ages will have memories of the time when they visited their old location and soon to be new customers as they visit this new location with a historic resilience. All focused on one simple but delicious American cuisine item: the hot dog. When I entered the restaurant for a late lunch it was already full of customers eating there; some arriving and others leaving. Some even mentioning how they have been customers of the place for years. Above the ordering counter was a large menu for one to study while the customers in front ordered their food. When my time came up to order, a young lady greeted me and took my order. I ordered a hot dog. A sloppy Joe, french fries, homemade banana pudding and a small drink of Iced Dr. Pepper. As the lady took the order, a gentleman prepared and brought it to the counter. I went to sit down at a table where I could see the inside of the restaurant and at the same time view through the front window the Historic Market Building. The hot dog was a quality yet simple hot dog served in a fresh and soft bun with mustard, chili, and onions. The French Fries were crinkle cut. The Sloppy Joe Sandwich was served on a Hotdog bun. The hot dog and fries were delicious. The chili was a bit too salty for me as well as the sloppy Joe. I would also have appreciated it in a burger bun. The Banana Pudding could have used more sugar. But the dining experience was very unique and worthwhile. And I discovered a great place to enjoy some time alone or with others.

Housed in a large brick building near Crossroads in Roanoke, Virginia, the front of the building faces Hershberger Rd and has large windows and an outdoor seating area to use in good weather. On the back side of the building the drive through is located and a large parking lot. The entrance to the restaurant is on its side under a bright red and white sign high above. As I entered the place was very clean and two low walls guided you to the ordering counter. Above the counter is the menu and customers stood there reading the menu and picking their order. When it was my turn to order, the friendly order taker answered some questions I had and I ordered a Burger tray with Onion Rings and Slaw, a Peach Cobler Shake, and an extra Cook Out Hot Dog. The order was efficiently taken and charged and then I moved in front of a window on the side to wait to be called to receive my order. After having my order, I picked a table and went to sit down. Even though the size of the burger was not too big, the bun was fresh and soft, and the beef patty was also very fresh. Later I found out that they make their own meat patties from fresh ground beef daily and distribute them to the restaurant. They are never frozen. The quality of the food and reasonably low price seem to be the key to attracting loyal customers. Watching the happy customers coming in as I was eating, made me think back of my childhood, and how much I would enjoy eating an inexpensive hot dog or hamburger at a cook out. It doesn't take an expensive restaurant or food to have an amazing dining experience. The four onion rings served were also were enough, considering the price. The Peach Cobler was very good but too thick to drink with a straw. I got a spoon and ate it like an ice cream with the spoon. At the end, I enjoyed my dinner, was relatively full, and spent very little money having quality food. And I discovered the secret to all the happy return customers that keep frequenting this restaurant. So for all of the above reasons, I recommend this place. After all, everyone loves a good cook out.

I enjoy having Panda Express due to its inexpensive options as well as its popularity across the United States. So to my surprise, I found a Panda Express here just outside the Valley View Mall in Roanoke, Virginia. I'm like, okay. At least it isn't McDonald's. And so, I walked in at around 10:15am on a Friday in March 2026. There was 2 people occupying tables but other than that, it was empty. I saw the lady behind the counter setting up and it was cool that I came here early enough so that things are freshly made and not sitting for too long. I ended up getting the bigger plate with noodles. Beef broccoli and orange chicken with string bean chicken was my order of the day. Along with a medium sized drink, the prices were decidedly competitive. It was delicious and typical Chinese American fare that many people enjoy. It was familiar to me as we have many Panda Express locations in Honolulu, where I live. I probably spent about 1 1/2 hours here enjoying my brunch and probably ended up refilling my drink cup 3 times before I departed. It was nice that they are okay with free refills, which made me happy as a clam. For the most part though, my time here at Panda Express was spent enjoying my brunch and being on vacation in Roanoke. It was a nice quiet time for me and definitely worth coming up here for a couple of hours. If you enjoy Chinese American cuisine and enjoy the aspects of quick and easy, you can consider Panda Express for your next meal in Roanoke. Definitely enjoyable and recommended if you're in the area and want to have something other than burgers and fries. Delicious and most definitely satisfying. The overall experience here at this particular Panda Express location was very good and quiet. It was nice that I came in on a regular Friday morning right after they had opened. No crowds or anything since I'd like to sit down and enjoy in a serene environment. The restaurant itself is fairly small but has enough tables to accommodate a small to medium size party and probably up to 35 people at any given time. What I liked about my experience here as mentioned before was the free soda refills at the self service drink machine. Definitely well worth the value for my money and I enjoyed that aspect of dining here. I enjoyed the comfort of dining alone during my time in this Panda Express in Roanoke. The service was good and fast. I even ordered my meal in Chinese and it was pretty cool. All in all, it was a delicious healthy enough meal. Everything was fresh and cooked with love. Definitely hit the spot when I was vacationing in the area. Panda Express really revolutionized the Chinese cuisine in America with its favorites options and the idea of having locations everywhere helped with my meal option that Friday morning in March 2026. I typically get the beef broccoli and the orange chicken with some type of noodles. Along with a drink, it's a nice way to have something light versus a bulky burger and fries meal. And so, if you want something as an alternative to the American burger and fries culture, consider Panda Express on your next trip to Roanoke. The ambiance was nice here and would come again, if future travels permit me to do so. This Panda Express location is situated next to the Valley View Mall in Roanoke, Virginia. Its physically address is 4809 Valley View Boulevard. It's right next to the I-581 and the Roanoke-Blacksburg regional airport is nearby. They accept major credit cards as well as cash. As far as parking goes, there's plenty of parking here since it's apart of the Valley View Mall complex. Best bet would be to come early enough to secure parking next to the restaurant to minimize the walking. If you are like me and love public transportation, bus route 15 will take you here from the 3rd street bus terminal in downtown Roanoke. It took about 45 minutes one way, which is not too bad and the cost was fairly inexpensive. Of course, there's always Uber and Lyft for your convenience and needs. And so, if you enjoy Chinese American cuisine and are in the Roanoke area, consider Panda Express as your go to spot for all things noodles and egg rolls, along other delicious favorites. Best thing you can do in Roanoke is party with egg rolls and noodles. And maybe some orange chicken and beef broccoli too. However you get here, get here fast and come hungry for sure. 5.0 stars for the overall experience. Quiet ambiance and a nice self service drink fountain. Support local! A+

But what really caught my attention and moved me was when I researched their mission and discovered that they believe that "good food served in warm, welcoming spaces by people who care" can bring out the best in all of us. After being awarded the NC Triad Yelp Squad Yelper of the Year 2024 Award at the Yelpies Award Ceremony last year, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, celebrating their contributions and accomplishments throughout the year, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and businesses, and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to uncover those found in hidden paths that for one reason or another have not reached the public in its totality. And this Panera Bread next to Tanglewood Mall off Electric Road in Roanoke, Virginia, is a perfect example. As I entered their restaurant, I was impressed by their clean, organized, and comfortable spaces. Their ordering counter was made of beautiful color wood and their menus were hanging from the wall behind with spotlights pointing at them. And on the left, it turned into several pastries and desserts glass display cases. Aside in front of the counter, they had two tables with four ordering computer stations. I appreciated the convenience but I waited for the order taker employee to come out. A young lady, Jenessa, finally arrived with a smile and gave me a friendly greeting and warm welcome. I asked her what soups they had and she pointed them out very well. Then I asked her what were some of the sandwiches she would recommend and she named a few and the reason why she had mentioned each. I ended up ordering half of the Chicken Bacon Rancher which had grilled, applewood smoked bacon, aged white cheddar, and ranch on their Black Pepper Focaccia. And a bowl of the Black Bean Soup, which came with a French Baguette side. Then I asked about their desserts and she mentioned that at this time of the day all bakery items were at half price. I took another look at them and ordered the Cherry Pastry, and a small Dr Pepper to drink, since today we celebrate Dr Pepper Day here in the Star City of Roanoke. I remembered once I had downloaded their app and became a Panera member so by giving her my phone number, she was able to find me and give me reward points for my purchase today. She gave me a cup for my drink and a pager or beeper to take with me to let me know when my food would be ready to pickup at the pick-up counter. When called, I got up and gave my name to a very nice young gentleman employee, who handed me a long white plate with my soup and sandwich. The Black Bean Soup was amazingly delicious and hot. And the French Baguette was fresh, and soft in the inside. It was so good that it made me think of returning for breakfast. The sandwich was also amazing with lots of chicken pieces and all the item I mentioned before. And the Cherry Pastry was one of the best I've ever had. As if this all was not enough for an extraordinary dining experience, the manager of the restaurant gave me a visit to see how I was doing and to see if all has been to my satisfaction. You can imagine what I told him. In conclusion I highly recommend this restaurant for the comfortable ambiance, the amazing food, and for the excellent customer service, providing an extraordinary dining experience.

And Subshack in Salem, Virginia, is the perfect example. After arriving to this Sub Shop located in a small strip mall in the middle of nowhere, in Salem, Virginia, the friendly owner of the place, who has a wonderful personality, gave me a warm welcome and immediately, in a nutshell, told me the story of how this place came to be. Born and raised in New York and having lived for many years in North Carolina, the opportunity of opening up this business here in Salem, Virginia came up and he literally went for it. And aren't we lucky he did because it is an ingenious little Sub Shop, a product of two persons who let their imagination run wild and then worked hard to see their dream of owning a little restaurant come true. And don't be confused by its name, it simply means a small place where large Subs are made for people to savor and enjoy. Thus we have: the "SUBSHACK." This restaurant is mostly for orders To-Go, yet outdoor, in front, it has a picnic table, for customers who would enjoy eating there during the warm Seasons of the year.
