What an amazing and inspiring event! My wife and I did the Iconic Wilshire Boulevard ride in April and absolutely loved it. We took the Metrolink into Union Station, then the Red line to Koreatown. Kudos to Metrolink for the additional bike-only cars, but they may need to add a few more because they filled up in no time. I felt bad for the riders who were turned away due to lack of space. Once we transferred to the Red line, we decided to go up to Koreatown and make our way back to the main hub. Since we arrived right around 9am, we were able to beat the crowds and the afternoon heat. It was awesome riding our bikes right on Wilshire and it gave us a new appreciation for the area. I loved seeing a familiar street from a new perspective and the volunteers along the route were friendly and cheerful. We saw so many different kinds of bikes, riders, and random silliness during our first CicLAvia experience, from unicyclists and towering bicycles to lowrider bikes and costumed characters. So cool! Businesses were open along the route and we were about to hit up a restaurant when we saw a small Koreatown CicLAvia festival happening. My wife and I chowed down on Korean BBQ (yum!) and I scored a free fanny pack from a local civic organization. We biked around for a few more minutes, then jumped back on the train for our ride home and were already making plans for the next CicLAvia in October. Can't wait! Highly recommended. read more

FREE outdoor activities are always great. If the city of Los Angeles would host more of these events to support the community the city would look so much better. I had a great Sunday with friends riding bikes across Downtown LA. Many streets are closed for cars specifically for this event so you have all the freedom riding on the street. This event definitely promotes for the METRO bikes you can rent at many bike stops on the streets of Dtla. I'm sure you know it from other cities. But LA let's you rent a bike for $3.50 per 30 mins. wow right? Insane. Many cities have this service for free or you pay as low as 10 cents per 30 min. LA really doesn't know how to make biking more appealing. read more

It's a great feeling to take to the streets without the risk of getting clipped by some angry motorist. Instead I got bumped and bullied by other more experienced riders who thought they alone owned the streets. What can be said. Every city has assholes. LA just so happens to collect them from all over... Otherwise- beautiful day! For the most part people were really friendly and the vibe was jovial. My regular bike popped a tire right away so I had to return home and get the "loaner" an old, rusty, heavy beach cruiser... Not what you want to ride over LA hills. Still a wonderful day. This is super fun! I really wish this event was held monthly. Today was the first time I attended, and I'm sad that I didn't get to go to CicLAvia to the Sea back in April. I never felt more sense of a community and it made downtown so chill. I don't get why people were complaining, about people beined inebriated, I never saw anything crazy or 'dangrous' happen - just people out on a sunny October afternoon riding their bikes having a nice time. My only complaint - wish there were more stops or people selling water. It was 90 out & I had the worst cottonmouth in my life after riding up 4th street bridge. read more

I love the intent to spread awareness about other (greener) modes of transport.. aka biking, skating, roller blading, etc. Honestly LA would be significantly more amazing if it became more of a bike-friendly city. I know they're working at it, so that's good! These cicLAvia events are a great start! Lots of friendly people. Great booths to learn about different orgs in the city. Could use a lot more though! Maybe from some non-profits? LA is the home of lots of great organizations; cicLAvia should have more of them come out & set up booths too! Food trucks were delicious (but maybe get some more known ones?)! I'd also recommend the cicLAvia team to set up signs or encourage the people to hashtag the event or post pictures and tag them or something (obviously not while biking though!). This was a sick ride from Eho to Boyle Height. A lot of people came from from all over the city to participate in this event by cycling, rollerblading, running, and some real crazy cool shit modes of transportation. There's music, food, free bike repair at each stop point and along the way you there's eateries and beer stops. We need more of these kinds of event in LA! It's brings the community so much closer!! Awesome event! If you're questioning on going, I highly recommend you do! I think everyone should participate in this at least once! When else can you ride your bike - or other recreation vehicle - on an open street without any cars! Sure, there's a few stops for cars to pass, but that's the best it can get, especially in Los Angeles. Came here during the June event on Wilshire Blvd. surprisingly, it was not that crowded which was great since that was a factor for my group not going. We were able to find free parking on a side street! Yay! We basically rode the whole route, and let me just say, the hills are killer. For someone who doesn't bike at all, you'll be tired! I was surprised I wasn't sore the next day! There are quite a few places to stop at along the route! If you see something cool, don't hesitate to go! At the miracle mile end, we got to go into the La Brea Tar Pits and the lamppost exhibit at LACMA. LACMA also had a few booths to stop at and the Grammy Museum had an exhibit up as well! Cool! My first time at a CicLAvia event! I like the fact this is not a timed race with a bunch of cut throat athletes! If you google and go their website, you will see that they hold this event every few months in the scenic and culturally unique parts of LA. For a designated amount of time (in this case it was 9:00am to 4:00pm) the streets which are designated routes (in this case Wilshire Blvd) are closed to automobile traffic, allowing pedestrians and cyclists a non-stop opportunity. Folks can come and go during the time frame, parking designated along the routes where there is public parking allowed. Lot's of bicyclist there, moreso than pedestrians, but then again it was a 14 mile round trip for those who decided to do the whole thing. A good activity for families and groups! Even dog walkers! There are no sponsored water stations along the way, however some of the local church groups handed out free bottles, and there were several youth and shop vendors who were selling refreshments along the way. So bring some money, or just pack a bag of your own. Most anything goes, as long as it is on motorized! The purpose of this event is for people to get out and get active, while enjoying the sites of LA! Looking foward to their next event in October! :) read more

So great to get out of our cars and onto bikes today (the metro bikes are awesome!). Such an amazing way to gain a new perspective of our beloved city. We hit The Arts District, Little Tokyo, Downtown Los Angeles, Echo Park, And Chinatown in about 4 hours. The event was well organized. The only thing is I wish there were more water stations for people like me who forgot to bring some (oops). GET ON IT! Bike, board, skate or walk and explore the city! I've done CicLAvia 3x so far and I really like it. Its a great way to explore the city while getting some exercise to boot. I think its fantastic that each time they have one of these they explore a different part of the city, I know that I now look at certain parts of the city in a different light now. It's also wonderful that people from all over the city get to interact with each other and the people that take in all seem to be pretty friendly. So if you want to you can totally go out be social and make some friends, everybody is out to have a good time or just enjoy the city by yourself or with your own group of friends. I have participated in two of these events ( Also going to this weekends Culver City to Venice Beach ride) and I must say it is a great idea for the communities involved. To be able to ride your bike, skate, or whatever you do free of cars is like heaven. Specially being able to stop by shops that you wouldn't normally because of lack of parking or worrying about getting a ticket. The greatest thing is doing it to be healthy. There is no rush, its not a race you can just cruise and enjoy the crowd and different vendors along the routes. I also like that they have a fix-it shop usually along the route in case you get a flat or something happens. The music and people just enjoying themselves is a great experience. Join their email so you can stay in the know of when the next one will be. If you read this before Sunday 8/9/2015, come out and do this weekends ride. read more

They team with Metro so you can take the train to wherever the event is and ride your bike from there. I hope this remains an LA tradition for a long time. Went to the Hollywood Bowl to DTLA Concert Hall! I wish we didn't come so late! But none the less it was still so much fun! Got to watch for free a string quartet and Filipino music TIPS: 1). Bring your BIKE!!! And make sure it's in tip top shape before bringing it and ridding it or else you will waste all your time at a bike repair station in line! And they aren't always available to fix your bike if the issue is more complex... OR 2) Bring your Credit card or debit card and Rent a bike from LAMetro I'm sure how it works but maybe check online! 3) Have FUN! So many people but oddly quiet, so much to see 4) try something new, or in the future if you see a restaurant or shop (some close for the day) but visit in the future. It's the small businesses that either take a hit or make it. So be supportive! 5) FOLLOW the RULES! I can't stand it when people just stop in the middle of the road and just "picnic" WTF!!! OR have their children or anyone learning to bike for the 1st time in the "fast Lane" seriously that's not ok You need to be on the side walk!! CicLAvia - What a great ride - Community Service/Non-Profit Near Me - Los Angeles, California

I rarely do things the easy way (for instance when I couldn't find a cab to pick me and my bike up and take me to Union Station for this event, I rode there instead, from Glendale to Union Station on a bike with no gears, on roads not shut down for the public to ride on, in pants, a little hung over), but I've got to pat myself on the back for choosing to take the metro to Culver City and ride the opposite direction from 88% of the other bikers to Downtown (to take reward myself with lots of Yelp's On Tap craft beers) because it was smooth sailing heading east. While scores of other cyclists were stuck in huge groups at every stop light, the handful of us two-wheeling the other way had the wind blowing through our hair with some serious gusto. I know it's easy for the heading westers to complain about the congestion, but it's really inspiring to see 150,000 people come out on bikes in a city notorious for relying on our autos to get from point A to B. I also saw a ton of CicLAviers riding the Metro, which is also an under utilized method of transportation we often forget. The event made me realize that I can get around LA without hopping behind the wheel of my car, and that's a pretty big "aha" moment that will absolutely motivate me to use my bike, the bus, and the Metro to navigate different neighborhoods. I thought the hubs were a nice touch with interactive elements, food, refreshments, community organizations I'd never heard of, etc. There needs to be more signage at the metro stops so people know how to get to the hubs, though! I will eagerly await an invitation to the biking dinner party next time around! read more

I can write a review about CicLAvia?! Awesome-ness!! Went bike riding with my bf and a couple of his friends. It was my first time doing a long distance ride, so I was nervous/excited. While all of his friends had road bikes, I had to rent an ugly mountain bike. :/ ..but my little buddy treated me great! We arrived around 11:30ish at Union Station and started our ride. The DTLA ride was amazing! It felt sooo good to just be riding in open streets, with the huge/tall buildings at your side. It was a surreal feeling actually. 20 minutes into the ride, these 2 teenage boys on scooters were passing by us. 2 minutes later, one of them just starts having an intense seizure. D: It was scurry! But, for the most part, the ride itself was great. It was DAMN hot! The only thing that I didn't like about it, was that you had to constantly stop at the stop lights..and it's not the type of bike ride where you can go super fast. It's pretty slow paced, so it gets boring after a while. You'll be seeing some awesome bikes though, that's for sure!! I also got one of the worst tans of my life..no, really. It looks like I'm always wearing another sports bra. Fucking ugly. read more

Best go to the Alamo basement to find your bike So dig out your old bike, though I wouldn't suggest looking in the basement of the Alamo. How about a used bike shop or garage sale. Either way, CicLAvia is one of those events you just have to jump right in and enjoy the fact that the city has been emptied of cars and you own the road. It's actually a bit of a relief to be able to ride my bike through downtown without the fear of getting side swiped or cursed at by some angry motorist who doesn't understand that bicycles share the road. It's times like this when a good sawed off shotgun strapped to your fixie frame would come in order. Though suicide by cops wouldn't fall in line with the idea of healthy living that comes from putting your foot on the pedals. Here's a little fun fact about me - Whenever I'm doing anything remotely healthy, I feel too much guilt that my self destructive side is on vacation. Thus I have to inject it with something unhealthy. It maintains an equilibrium to the world. When I go hiking I bring wine. When I go biking- to avoid the potential of falling on my back and getting shards in my lower five vertebra, I bring beer -- specifically canned beer -- and it since Fat Tire seems to cater to the bike riding community, what better way to go than that. What better way to enjoy a bike ride than by pounding a can of beer. No wait, that's probably illegal advice. You shouldn't operate a bike while intoxicated.. You can get a DUI while on your BMX. Though if you are drinking responsibly, it can be one hell of an enjoyable experience. Not to mention that canned beer looks a lot like soda, and thus you sort of get around open container laws. Back to the conversation of this "family" fun day. There's a lot of people who come here with their children. So perhaps you shouldn't be busting out too many tricks there and should watch out for those little ones getting their training wheels on. There is also those who are a little out there. As if they drank one too many canned beers and hard spirits before showing up on their unicycles, Penny- Farthing and Velocipede bicycles. Yeah, it's a strange sight to see those pass you up but what the hell. Some days are just stranger than others. And CicLaVia knows how to bring them all out. The route has been expanding over the last few versions of this. I hear in October it'll go all the way into East L.A. - Not sure if people will feel all that comfortable with riding there, but those people are pansies anyway. It makes the starting point for me a lot closer. Along the route there is water stations, food trucks, booths that make you aware of one such organization or another. One route through the fashion district is especially awesome for Mexican food and drinks. You'd probably never realize that they were down there every weekend and after CicLAvia, you'll probably find yourself there on a weekend every few weeks because the offerings are so good and cheap to boot. This is an event that I can't wait for every year, and now twice a year. read more

I'm not an avid bike rider by any stretch of the imagination, in fact I may need training wheels the next time I get on one but this was loads of fun anyways. Not owning bikes, my wife and I walked the entire route with our two yeaer old daughter and it's quite a trek. Along the way we heard some music, ate some great food, saw some places we never noticed before and wore our shoes down to nothing. It's a grand sight, seeing thousands of bikers on the streets of downtown, laughing and enjoying themselves and you can't help but get caught up in the camraderie. It's a shame every day people can't get along like they do in this event but it's days like this that can get us closer to that in the future. If you enjoy riding, seeing the city around you, trying new food, playing dodgeball or any of the other cool activities along the route this is a great way to spend the day. There are a few more scheduled, and the ultimate goal is to do a monthly version. It's another perfect way to bring out the kid in everyone. Come out and join the fun and how cool is it to meander through downtown streets with no cars in sight. Very cool. read more

I finally participated in the NoHo CicLAvia on a whim and it was probably the best decision I made that weekend. I didn't have a bike so I had to borrow from a friend's family close-by. Great, do I even remember how to ride a bike? To my surprise, yes! There's something freeing and peaceful about riding in a tank top and flip flops with your hair flowing in the wind. Yea, imagine a Titanic-esque scene of me on a bike riding down Ventura Blvd. In the middle of the ride, there's a mandatory dismount section where you can get free swag from businesses, grab a bite at a food truck, and paint on the Ciclavia truck. This is event is a must, just make sure to wear sunblock or you'll end up with weird tank top tan lines like I did :) read more

I loved this!!! The only other time I came close to cruising the streets of downtown was a Midnight Ridazz ride 2 years ago...which meant super late at night and we had taken over the streets because there was over 300 of us. This event, though a little too hot, was very organized, safe, and had support of cops and everyone else who you can get in trouble by in LA. They are planning on making this a regular thing, so even if you don't bike, please come out and support by walking/jogging/skate board/roller blades, etc. It's amazing how we are 3 decades behind! Super fun way to explore LA where a 15 mile stretch of road is closed from Union Station to Venice Beach (for 2013 route). A good number of vendors (eats, FREE bike repairs, water stations) along the route. Majority are bikers ... though had some people skating, running, boarding, etc. It can get a little chaotic at some points, so would recommend going on the side if you bring a dog or a tyke on training wheels. A few stops along the way where they have to let through traffic. Be sure you have good tires because some of the pavement is really bumpy. Overall, a really cool event! Definitely an experience unlike any other! This year, the total distance down Wilshire Blvd. was 12 miles round-trip which took us a little less than an hour and a half with a couple stops in between. It was quite a mind-blowing point of view biking through empty streets that are normally packed with cars. It really allows you to take in the city and view all the iconic buildings and landmarks from a different perspective. This would be a really great event to take visitors to. Although there were many kids present, I wouldn't recommend bringing kids under 5. Even though the streets are closed off to cars, the chance of younger kids being hit by other bikers is pretty high. Another tip would be to make sure you allow enough time to get back to your destination by 3:45pm, NOT 4pm (the stated end time). The police began opening up the streets to cars around 3:45pm making it extremely difficult to get back to your start point if you weren't quick. For slower bikers, I would advise arriving no later than 1pm to make sure you have ample time to complete the entire round-trip distance and have time to hop off your bike and explore as well! read more

You will discover parts of the city you didn't know existed. For instance, did you know there is an actual piñata district, and the sidewalks there serve as makeshift taco & horchata stands? Now I do! Bring more water than you think you need, and don't forget the sunscreen. Those skyscrapers don't shade you they way you might hope they will. It's great fun to experience the streets over-run with bikes. While being on a bike is not that interesting in and of itself, and being downtown is not that interesting (well, it is, if you look up), somehow, being on a bike takes that cool architecture/striving to hear echoes of the past thing up to another level. It takes two somewhat mundane things most of us have done, combines them, and creates a funky novelty. The most surreal moment: being in a pack of hundreds of bikers, from both directions, passing over the 110 Freeway. Magic. Be cautious. Cars will wander onto the route, either by mistake or out of disregard for the barriers. We saw two, the second of which was approached by two police officers while holding their hands over their guns. Thankfully, that car's driver did not have a sinister intent, but again, that's something else I don't see everyday - another novel situation created by the event. If attending with kids, save the hubs with the most kids' activities for last. We made the mistake of hitting the Grand Park hub first, and really, we could have just ditched the bikes & spent the whole day there. Over-sized board games, crafts, music, lots and lots of food trucks; Grand Park was a destination unto itself. I do wish the Ciclavia would better preview which activities will be taking place at which hub, as this could really help people prioritize their day. All in all, a fabulous event. Cycle through the streets of LA while they close off the roads?! Heck yes! No cars to deal with and a great sense of community. There are people on the side of the road waving and cheering you on. Happy,smiling, excited people all around. Lot's of cool community setups that showcase local businesses. Slowing down and touring the streets of LA on a bike help give you a different perspective of the city. I discovered so many businesses and parks that I had overlooked before and there is a certain cool nostalgic feeling of bad assness as you return to drive through the exact same streets you had peddled through. read more

Very fun event in Los Angeles- the traffic capitol of the US. It is so nice to spend a day being able to ride your bike in the street and not worry about getting hit by cars... however, you have another thing to worry about- getting hit my drunk bikers! Yikesss! There are a ton of them and it's important for parents to watch their children. I saw 5 people go down on their own last event and it was not pretty. As long as you keep and eye on what is going on around you (duh-- you should- you are on a bike), then you should be fine! I think it was a great day for local businesses. We pick 3 stops in advance and our whole crew (of 12..?) meets at each destination for some food or beers (yes, my friends may be the ones to look out for towards the end of the day). This has been the best way for us to do it, but each group is different. The volunteers are great too. They were really helpful and super friendly. Lastly the observers are awesome. They are there to cheer you on and make you feel like you just ran the LA marathon! It's like winning a marathon without having to run.. sweet! Definitely worth checking out and the next one is 10/6 and goes all through DTLA! read more

There is perhaps no greater event in LA than this one. Miles of streets open with no cars to run you over (only other bicyclists!). LOL. Ya, some people are truly clueless. ANYWAY, it's the best way to enjoy an afternoon in LA. I think it happens about once every 6 months so look this up, book mark, and make it out next time. Oh what fun! My puppy loved rolling down Wilshire in his new bike basket and the bf and I enjoyed all of the food and entertainment stops along the route. CicLAvia was so much fun and I can't wait to participate in the next one. If you're thinking about walking it, I strongly encourage you to reconsider. Walking during CicLAvia is 10x more dangerous than usual with all of the crazy bike riders. This event brought out tens of thousands of people and it was beyond fabulous. I went to the CicLAvia this past Sunday in downtown LA and I had such a blast! This was my first CicLAvia and I came very late, but still managed to ride to two hubs and cross that beautiful bridge over the LA River going east out of downtown. I will never miss one of these again! And next time, I'm coming in the morning so I can take full advantage of the route and all the hubs and activities. It was great biking down streets and noticing architecture, cafes, and landscapes that I just would not have noticed from a car. People were nice and in a good mood, just looking to ride or walk with their fellow Angelenos on a beautiful day. I stopped at a gathering, and these two bike messengers started chatting with me, teaching me about bike gears, and then they inflated my tires before I left. How nice!! read more

I did this without a bike, just to let you know. So I didn't go from one end to the next. But I did walk from MacArthur Park all the way to The Jewelry District in Downtown LA. It was quite an experience. I didn't have someone next to me for this quest. Which was an accomplishment in itself, because of my hypochondria induced social anxiety disorder. All sorts of bikes, all sorts of people, all sorts of stories whizzing by. Neon bright biker shorts, to baggy pants and shirtless. Families to soloists to did-up bikes to ten speeds to beach cruisers to BMXs to water bottles to radios on the handlebars to skateboards to roller blades to tandems to everything not-shoe-not-car was out on the streets that Sunday. Felt like a parade, a celebration of human locomotion. The thing I received from the experience, because I didn't get the opportunity to go from one end of the route to the next at bicycle speed, but I was able to notice the buildings and the people up close. Al the different faces that Los Angeles has to offer. That these faces and the stories they could tell are usually, typically, inside a metal box on the freeway on their way to something they have to get to. To have these same people right next to you, smiling as you at they whizz by you, within arms reach, gave me a strange feeling of connection. Of human contact. One that I wasn't even afraid of. That was cool. And, because I walked, I was able to see the chalk drawings the children drew. Los Angeles sure continues to surprise me. Thanks, home. read more

Who wears short shorts? I do and I don't give a damn! If you have ever done any outdoor activity with me, you will notice quickly that I wear some revealing outerwear or lack of. Do I show off? Hardly, right N.A. ;) Two years in a row and two accidents! I was a volunteering medic last year and saw my fair share of road rashes. Today someone overlooked a curb then went up and over their bar to kiss my thigh with their forehead. My thigh is sore but that shouldn't stop me from my planned hikes or runs this week. -Fun overall till the crash -Always good to see cyclist ride the closed off streets -Cycling is a great stress reliever and seeing fellow Angelenos spirits high was a plus Would I be back? Same time next year but can you not have an accident around me? I want to finally enjoy an injury free ride. Ugh, I need a drink. Here I come LAB! read more

SO much FUN! Can't wait for the next event. Definitely a great experience to enjoy with friends. Just cruisin' down the streets of DTLA and not having to worry about get hit by cars. I only wished that bars/restaurants along the route were offering specials during the event. Overall it was a well organized event. I had an awesome time! read more
