I continue to attend this free and wonderful event that promotes multimodal transportation and healthy activities. In the recent Ciclavias there are prizes given for attending hubs, supporting local farmer's markets and so on. How often do you get to ride a bike in the middle of the street? Seldom, hell I've always been against bike riders and mock them for taking up the road. But there comes a day when if you can't beat them join them. I must say the grass is allot greener on the other side, for those that hate bicyclist join them. You are missing out. It was truly a spectacular experience all around. I took the red line down to the Wilshire hub, very convenient taking the metro. No worries about finding parking or paying. Highly recommend going early at start time to beat the madness. We started right at 9 am and headed west, there were several spots that I had never seen before. I have driven on Wilshire a thousand times and never knew how many churches there was on this street. Yes I skipped church for this which may be why they kept popping up every 3 blocks. At one point I was eager to park my bike and attend mass. But as soon as I got off and saw a taco truck, there was no return. Sorry lord. But whats amazing about this event is how orderly everyone was, yeah there was the occasional snobs. Overall the participants were polite, many families and kids riding together. Its rare that families spend Sunday morning together, seeing this makes me think there is still some normalcy in this part of town. Plus its the best way to people watch all the odd and unique characters in this strange city of ours. Highly recommend checking this out, its free and great way to explore the city. read more

A fun day for me and my son. Wasn't so great to find that I got a tiny little nail in my tire, from riding this past Thursday, but a quick change of tubes, and away we go! Nice to get the roads closed off, and the periodic stops at the lights that let the cars through were a nice way to keep the faster riders in control. My son had a blast spotting all kinds of unusual rides including the really tall bikes, low riders, and also the trailers with the dogs on them. If we don't have a nap time to beat, next time we'll explore the local restaurants some more... read more

Just got done riding the most funnest and safest rides in LA. Sans the worries of rude motorist with road rage thousands of people showed up to ride, run, roller blade, skate and even push a stroller around. We met in front of Orange 20 Bicycle early this morn ands started shortly after 10. The ride was beautiful and fun. Riding through DTLA reminded me of NYC with all of the tall buildings. It's a great way to see some good street art as well. By the end of the ride we had ridden 15 miles. From start to finish which was at Hollenbeck Park and back to the starting point we had ridden a fun 15 mile ride. Sure there was some little mishaps meaning people falling down (sorry to the guy who bumped into me and fell off but i managed to stay on) other than that there was enough first aid and safety staff to help out. The volunteers were awesome the police directing traffic were amazing!! This ride is so much fun... Can't wait to ride the next ride which will be in a few months.. read more

Kudos to LA City Counsel and LAPD for supporting this event. Hats off to the citizens of Los Angeles for participating in CicLAvia and allowing us to use your streets. There is so much good to come out of CicLAvia: a community event that promotes fitness and exploring areas we wouldn't normally explore. It's a fun event which takes place on a beautiful beautiful Los Angeles day! I give this event three stars, because anybody who's attended any other Ciclovia in other town knows: the LA version is seriously lacking. The streets aren't completely closed - you wade through seas of bikes to take your turn crossing an intersection which allows cars to pass. It's bike, wait, bike, wait, wait wait, bike, then wait some more. Understandably, accidents happen and we don't want law suits (especially in LA, the land of suing), but I've never heard of a Ciclovia forcing participants to walk bikes like CicLAvia does on puny hills. and CicLAvia organizers: you've got to allow commerse to freely invade the route. Part of the fun of biking around is seeing all the STUFF that gets put out for sale or the weird shows that people piece together. Organizers: Good work, and I really mean it. I never thought I'd see a ciclovia in LA, this is a huge achievement! Please keep pressing for more closed roads, more free commerse, more participation, less traffic stops. read more

Finally, after all the other CicLAvias I've missed in the past, I was able to participate in the one from Culver City to Venice, even better was that the route was right through my part of town! Such a fun and cool event, well organized, and plenty of things to eat along the way. Between farmer's markets, little enclaves of food trucks, and stores open as usual on the route, you won't go hungry or thirsty. It did get a little crowded at certain intersections where cars were still allowed to pass, but for the most part, all bikers were friendly and gave each other enough space. read more

Me and bikes have not always been friends. Especially not in big cities like LA. I do not have all the reflective cautionary clothing, awesome cycling shoes and such, and more or less like to cruise around in open plains letting wind run through my hair. I'm not what you'd call a biker, for sure. However, i LOVED this event! Akin to New York City's Summer Streets, or how I would imagine a midwestern county fair, summer streets was like a roaming, family-friendly biking adventure through the streets of LA. We started in DTLA and went up to the el pueblo hub to explore Olvera Street, the oldest street in LA, and the market place there. We grabbed churros at Mr. Churro and relaxed in the plaza for a bit. Then we rode across the 4th street Bridge, witnessing a moving photobooth and roaming double dutch game, got some free juice from the bunny bar, and went on our way to a lovely Saturday Brunch @ URTH cafe. Such awesomeness! Very )'(-esque. Finally, we went back the route to the westside beginning at the bike hub to end at scoops, and took the metro back as the streets were opening up. There's definitely NOTHING like riding down the streets of LA free of cars, and just watching eveyrone happy and enjoying the sunshine! GREAT way to explore those other parts of LA you normally just zip past. Cant wait for the next one! read more

This is the first time my husband & I participated in CicLAvia although we didn't ride our bikes. They are mountain bikes & need the tires to be switched out to road tires. Maybe next time. We took the Metro Gold Line to Mariachi Plaza & walked the route across the 4th Street bridge into Downtown L.A. I've driven across this bridge a million times over my lifetime but the details were always a blur. Walking across gives you the opportunity to see the details. We walked through Little Tokyo & then down Spring Street. Again, since Spring is a one way street, there were so many things that we had never noticed. We had a great time & look forward to the next one. read more

My husband and I have been to every CicLAvia event so far in Los Angeles, and we try to make sure we're always in town for the next one! It's such a great way to experience LA and absorb the architecture, community, and general life of the city. For a couple of hours you and your loved ones can feel safe biking, walking, rollerblading, etc. through the streets in the heart of LA, since no motorized vehicles are allowed! We hope that CicLAvia becomes a regular thing, like it is in Bogota Colombia (they do it every Sunday!). Every busy city should be able to take a break from the norm and enjoy the communities they live in. read more

A great way to enjoy LA. Streets are closed to cars and (mainly) bikes rule the road. Casually cruise and find shops you may have missed or speed from one end to the other faster than you usually can in a car. Lots of fun as everyone enjoys the day. Very cool event, had a great time. It was nice to see the diversity of people out there as well the appreciation for all sorts of anti automobiles. I saw riders on unicycles, tricycles, and tandem bikes. I saw a few land paddlers, and bike stunt guys making tricks look too easy. Saw one person go down. Shout out to the F**K GAS sticker on the bikes! If I'm in this area, it's usually in a car, battling traffic, or combing the streets in search of parking. It was nice to be able to actually look around and appreciate things I've been driving by for years. Had a blast at the Valley ride yesterday. Just wish the route was a little longer! I love Ciclavia, it's so much fun and a great way to see different areas of LA. Only complaints: people walking in the center of the street instead of to the right, people stopping in the middle of the street to text or talk to their friends... that sort of clueless stuff. A truly great event that changed the history or Los Angeles in my opinion. If you would have told people just ten years ago that the city would shut down a large street and a bunch of people would ride their bikes they would have thought you were insane. Even I didn't think this was going to work the first time, but alas it did. I think we should make this a long-lasting institution here in Los Angeles like the Bay Area bay to breakers. I hope it doesn't go by the wayside dud to budget cuts. Only thing that i would change about CicLAvia is MAKE IT LONGER! 5 hours is simply not enough for people to go back and forth on the route comfortably. Making it longer would stop people from rushing and thus would prevent injuries to kids and slower folks. But as a rule of thumb if you're going slow (read: not on road bike) move to the left and stay there. read more

To be honest, I wasn't sure how I felt about the idea of just walking around the middle of the street aimlessly. When a good friend suggested we try it with three toddlers, I felt uneasy but hey i'm up for anything on dull Sundays. We brought a double stroller, a red flyer wagon, a tricycle, and two scooters for three little ones. Trust me...they changed their minds about what they wanted to do at every block, so i'm glad we brought every wheeled item available. We arrived promptly at 10:00 when it began and it was perfect. There were a few bike riders but there was tons of space to leisurely walk around. Come 11-12, it was a sea of cyclists. It looked like a bicycle marathon! No joke. We were succumbed to hanging on the sidewalk like we normally would on any given day. Still fun nonetheless. There were unicyclists and all sorts of interesting bicycles you can think of. There were a few tents that offered some services. My favorite part was the little food truck area. There were only 5 food trucks. I had hoped there'd be plenty more especially considering the huge turnout. Here's a suggestion. Maybe a separate side street for just those who want to meander around without fast bicycles? There were plenty of little ones on the streets but it's just too dangerous with so many cyclists whizzing by. read more

CicLAvia in downtown LA was a great excuse to walk around the city and actually take in some sights, all while building community. CicLAvia is such a fun Los Angeles event! Going for the first time, I was quite unsure Of what to expect. The route started in Chinatown and ended in East LA by the 710 freeway. Parking was fairly easy to find. I suggest going early to avoid the traffic and blocked off streets. The route was very easy to follow and there were lots of volunteers helping guide the bike and pedestrian traffic. This event is great because not only is it a great way to stay active, but it's a great way to check out your city in a way you've never seen it before. The route isn't intense and there isn't any competitiveness among riders. Everyone was so friendly and in a great mood. Lots of opportunities to stop and check out local shops and eateries too. Can't wait for the next Ciclavia in December! read more

Today I went to my first CicLAvia and I can't wait to participate in more CicLAvia events! It was an awesome event. This one was called "Iconic Wilshire Blvd" where you get to appreciate the architecture, the parks, and just your surroundings. The event is very lively with people on the sidelines selling 25 cents lemonade, Korean mascots, Oscar statues, rock climbing walls, and food trucks. A plus there is a booth that does free bike repairs! read more

Yes, yes, a thousand times YES! If you haven't attended or even heard of cicLAvia, do yourself a favor and make absolutely sure you make it to the next one. It was one of the BEST experiences I've had in LA doing something that I'd never imagine I would. Riding through the city in the middle of the road without the worry of having your brain become scrambled eggs is just phenomenal. Not to mention the hundreds of thousands of people that show up, it makes for one hell of a fantastic and entertaining day. Borrowed a bike from a buddy to participate in the big party. Glad I decided to play instead of doing laundry and Swiffering my floors. There were so many smiley faces on LA's streets. Riders (and bikes!) dressed in costume. Impromptu parties sprang up on sidewalks. Tall bikes, small bikes, big wheels, unicycles, tandems. The xtremely chill vibe was so infectious. Everyone was in good spirits. While waiting at one traffic stop, I noticed an older Mexican couple (who were simply walking by on the sidewalks) that seemed puzzled at first, but then the lady scrambled for her camera and started taking pictures of her husband with all the bikes zooming behind him. So cute! My friends and I raced around trying to collect all the cute pins at each hub, but we took our time snapping photos and relaxing in the park with frozen lemonades and iced coffees that we didn't make it all the way to Melrose this time around. Looking forward to the next one. Until then, I need to get a bike of my own. read more

There is so much behind CicLAvia, the philosophical meaning of it= Community building, getting to know your city, seeing who lives in the city of Angels. I'm pretty sure that because of CicLAvia, a good percentage of LA people who live in the Westside, finally got to touch the Eastside, and it looked beautiful. LA has never seemed like a real big city until CicLAvia came. There was people hanging out outside, biking of coarse, walking, roller bladding. There was young and old people, well off people, and people living day to day. What a perfect exercise, what a perfect way to navigate the city, what a perfect day to meat people, what a perfect way to stop for a beer, what a perfect way to care for the environment, what a perfect way to re -eave stress, huffff... I can go on for the human benefits of this day. Spiritually you feel free, free from you car, free from traffic jams, free from that hot bubble that sits under the sun for hours. Nothing beats going down the hills on a bike, and the wind blowing your hair, or going down the "4" Street Bridge and looking at downtown from a different angle, and then stopping in the middle of it all and taking a picture. I can write my senior thesis on CicLAvia, so I am going to stop here. For those of you who have not done it, I recommend you do, it's a surreal experience! read more

This was the first time I actually went to this event and participated in. I walked the six miles. It was a gorgeous day and many bikers, some jogger, pedestrians, skateboarders, came out throughout the day. It was well organized and the route was flat and well marked and lots of police and volunteers along the course. There were many residence taking advantage of the crowd and were selling drinks, cookies, snacks, and anything else you could think of including artwork, tshirts, and much more. Lots of food trucks, and such along the route. But they really need to add more porta potties. I had to really go and there were none to be found when I needed it. The route allowed me to explore things I never knew existed like I didn't know where the Sony Pictures Entertainment was or the Kirk Douglas Theater or all the nice food places along the route were. First time attending CicLAvia off Wilshire Blvd and I already love it. Impressed! Really brought back memories of when I hit up Manhattan and Central Park on bike. One star was deducted because pedestrians were walking in the streets and some bike riders were pretty reckless weaving in and out of people, making it hard for everyone else to enjoy the day cruising. No better way to cover ground and really see the charms the city of Los Angeles has to offer. Best part was - SO many yummy food trucks lined up at various intersection hubs for food breaks ... Also a great amount of kind volunteers offering water and encouragement. I'm already geeking out for the October 6th event through the heart of LA - routing through Chinatown, too :D Such great sights at this perspective, especially with La Brea Tar Pits and LACMA open - there was such positive energy with the cars off the streets. My bf and I had greatly benefit from REI's bike services - they offered complimentary brake checks, chain inspections, and air for pumping up tires. All the employees took genuine care with every rider with safety as their first priority on the day of this event. The weather was slightly overcast so no great deal of complaints from me :) Only sad thing which occurred is that I do hope the authorities reach out to the community to find that driver of a late model green Camry who hit a cyclist and took off between the road barricades. The streets of LA are being shutdown to make room for thousands of bikers and pedestrians? Normally, I try to avoid overly hyped and crowded events, but the idea of CicLAvia was too enticing to pass up. I ended up having an awesome time. My partner and I took the metro with our bikes from Studio City to Wilshire/Vermont to get to CicLAvia. Recommend using public transport to avoid traffic. I did notice that cars were backed up pretty far on the streets. We exited the Metro stop and were immediately greeted with the sight of hundreds of bikers casually riding down the street. It was awesome to see the streets shut down to cars, completely open to bikers and pedestrians, and not have chaos ensue by the crowds. There were various hubs to visit throughout the path. Each hub was an opportunity to get some merchandise, get some freebies, try some food trucks or food from local restaurants, or explore what that part of the city had to offer. Random bands and performances could be seen in front of various business throughout the path. I've driven down Wilshire plenty of times, but CicLAvia provided an opportunity to actually take the sights in and notice parts of the city I've never paid attention to before. CicLAvia is a great way to explore the city and just leisurely bike down streets without fear of getting rundown but angry drivers. read more

I have never spent 6 hours straight on the streets of Los Angeles before, not to mention in that kind of heat. It was such a nice, peaceful, relaxing experience. Getting across the 7.5mile distance was so easy and fun. The restaurants and food vendors made a killing on Sunday. Scoops had absolutely no ice cream left by 3:30pm. read more

Our family enjoyed our second cicLAvia today! This time we biked, last time my wife and I just skated around Macarthur Park...My wife, son and I took the train to the Union Station in DT LA. Amazing train station - so much soul! The train ride was so much fun filled with 100's of bikers from The OC!! We got off and started biking towards DT, the Mole (mole-a) festival sidetracked us at Olvera street for an amazing lunch...We continued biking with the masses towards City Hall. We pit stopped at the new Grand Park, they were jamming with great music in the park. The weather was amazing as usual and the diverse Angeleno energy made for a fun-filled family day!!! read more

I did the Culver City to Venice ride this past weekend and had a great time! It helped that the route was super close to my house so I could bike to where it started, but I know that there was lots of parking near the beginning of the route too. There were a couple of inconsiderate riders, but most of the people out there knew how to ride in a crowd and not cut people off. There were lots of stores in the area that had specials for CicLAvia riders or brought their business to the sidewalk so you could stop your ride to check out what the had to offer without having to lock up your bike. It was a little tough near the CicLAvia station where they had bike pumps and other quick repair tools because people were stopping in the middle of the street and there were several near-crashes. But other than that, things were wide open and even when you had to stop at an intersection to let traffic go by you were able to feel not too crowded. The next ride will either be a train ride or a car ride for me. I'm thinking about going to it, but it's so much easier when I just had to bike to the start. Hopefully there will be another Culver City ride in the future! read more

GREAT experience. I went to CicLAvia in Downtown LA this month, it was my first time, but others I went with were seasoned. It was a such a rush, in beautiful weather (on the cooler side) which we don't often get in LA, to feel the wind on your face. You could feel the positive energy from everyone around you just having a great time. There were people of all shapes, sizes, colors, creeds, fitness levels, etc. It was great to people watch, as many wore ridiculous clothing and some had crazy modes of transportation, such as unicycles and very, very "tall" bikes. It was great to be able to slow down and appreciate all of the downtown Los Angeles architecture, something one can't normally do in LA because it moves so quickly. Having the streets shut down to traffic is a dream for me, when riding with my 10 and 6 year old, I tend to be overbearing when in normal conditions. This was so great to have 90% of my worries put to rest. I recommend this even to everyone I can. We will definitely be doing the next one in March! read more

Unique outdoor event that I would recommend to all. There is no start/finish line so you can start in the middle and end wherever you want! You will see L.A. landmarks up close as well as a myriad of different people, bikes, neighborhoods and everything in between. Take advantage of the sunshine while walking/riding/relaxing right in the middle of a major street without having to worry about a car or bus coming at you! What normally would have been a day of me lying on the couch scratching my belly turned into one of the most fun filled days I've had in a while... yeah I need to get out more. It's not everyday you get to ride on the streets of Downtown L.A. without the danger of some dumbass running you over which is something (I'm sure) cyclists here experience quite so often. I was a little bummed that I missed the last CicLAvia event in October so I made sure to grab a fat red marker and circle April 15th on my calendar. Fast forward to yesterday and now I'm trying to figure out when the next one is coming up. My wife and I brought our bikes and started our ride on 7th and Grand. There were so many cyclists that we were a little overwhelmed when trying to make a left turn while getting into the pool of people. If anything that was the only complaint, in certain spots you had to go with the flow of the current or else you would be the cause of a massive bicycle pile up. Screw trying to make a U-turn. The day couldn't have been any shorter but the dream was fulfilled. Sharing the road with so many angelenos and enjoying the beautiful architecture of downtown was great. I really would've wanted to stop at a local spot to grab a bite or have a drink but I could always come back on any given day, I can't always ride my bike in the middle of the 4th street bridge. Also, I gotsta give a shout out to the event planners and volunteers. They did and keep doing a great job. I'm not usually one to ask for donations but it's easy to donate (text "SMILE" to 89544 to donate $10) to continue to make this an awesome recurring event. read more

Wow, I didn't think you could Yelp this, but here it is. Amazing, truly freaking amazing. I went to it for the first time this year. I took my son and went with a friend and his kid. I was amazed at how many people there were. I read someone's post that there were probably 100K+ people there. I don't doubt it. There were throngs of people, which was good and bad. It's great to see so many people enjoying this beautiful city, but it also slowed the ride down to a crawl in too many places. read more

Freedom. The concept and idea are fantastic! What an amazing, unique perspective to see LA not in the car and not on the sidewalk, but in the middle of the freakin' huge avenues and boulevards. And you can run all the red lights. Like a rebel!! A very well controlled and City-sponsored rebel of the streets!! Safer? Not so much. I can't say I felt any safer without cars. Wow, bicyclists can be a-holes...and DANGEROUS. At least you can take legal action against a driver who hits you, but what happens in a bike collision? Cussing. That's it. It's always the ones with spandex bike tights too. You know the ones. If you can see the outline of their penis, then stay away, they're gonna be an a-hole biker. Easy. Uh, for some. It's FANTASTIC if you live near a subway or train. When I lived along the Metro Purple Line, CicLAvia was easy and RIGHT THERE. If you live any further, be prepared to bike to a route and then be so tired that you just wanna go home. OR be prepared to transfer transit lines like you've never transferred before. Don't EVEN drive, b. Once in a lifetime....uh, unless you do CicLAvia more than once. The most unique part of the whole thing is in Downtown. Downtown is a big cluster-eff of bicyclists so if you want to keep your leisurely, relaxing experience, don't go Downtown, but I personally think it's an awe-inspiring site to see traffic controllers controlling BICYCLE traffic in freakin' Downtown LA. You don't move very fast, but what a site to see!!! Hills pop up out of NOWHERE. My auto bubble keeps me in the dark about these things, but apparently, LA strees are pretty hilly. When you have no horsepower, you quickly realize this. Going down is FUN and you might shed one tear in your 30 second flight of freedom. Yeah, but at some point, you gotta go back up. Wear comfy shoes. Just get a bike, jesus. My buddy decided to do CicLAvia on roller blades. Well, to each his own, but damn he had a tough time. Any bump in the road was an ordeal; the hills were an ordeal, both up and down; getting in the way of bicyclists was an ordeal; It's just difficult. Just get a bike and save the blades for Venice...and the 90s. Can we do a nighttime CicLAvia?!??! read more

Better and Better each ride! Bigger crowd, more to see and hear, tons of L.A. fun! We've done all 3 rides, it is such a great way to see the city! This time our group grew to 8, including my super pregnant sister and my 8 & 9 year old nieces. We had so much fun riding together. They loved going over the bridge and I felt so privileged to be able to share the city with them in this way. They drove in from Ventura and met us at the loft, we all cruised out together and had a blast!! You hear music, smell good food, see fun people and doggies, feel the wind & sun and make great memories. Thank you L.A. this is truly one of our best events!! and it's ..... FREE!!!! i have lived in this amazing city most of my soon to be 45 years and after this event i am more in love with Los Angeles than ever before. i hope that the CicLAvia team including the city council/city hall can make this happen more often!! enlarge the routes, would of loved to venture more into ELA.
