MADE IN CALIFORNIA: CALIFORNIA CHROME, KENTUCKY DERBY AND PREAKNESS WINNER (POSSIBLE TRIPLE CROWN)…read more Growing up I was a horse racing fan. My family thinks it's because I love horses. In reality it was because I love the business aspect of it - a great way to make a lot of money through racing and breeding. Even at a young age I was that business-minded. But as I followed horse racing I began to understand it's an expensive enterprise. Even though I get fascinated by the billion dollar industry there are stories of those who become bankrupt because of it. I've been to thoroughbred farms in Kentucky, which is considered the thoroughbred horse breeding capital of the world. The farms in Kentucky look like castles. There's no animal stench that lingers usually at farms. The grass looked better than most grass at football stadiums. Most of all the horses themselves were treated like princes or princesses. They're better taken care than most people in this country. When I go to the racetrack to bet on important races in California I noticed most of the horses racing were born in Kentucky. Especially during the summer for two-year old races (stakes or allowance) most of those horses racing in California are Kentucky bred. For any Kentucky Derby prep races in California the betting favorites tend to be Kentucky bred. I have to admit I thought California bred horses were inferior to Kentucky bred horses. As a Californian I never thought in my lifetime that a California bred horse would win a Triple Crown race like the Kentucky Derby. That was until this year with California Chrome winning the first two legs of the Triple Crown. With the possible Triple Crown at stake next Saturday, today I drove to the farm where California Chrome was born. My contact at Harris Farms was Dave McGlothlin, but he was busy today. Debbie Winick was the one who provided me a tour of the farm. I came to specifically see California Chrome's dad, Lucky Pulpit, and mom, Love the Chase. When I saw Lucky Pulpit he was eating at his paddock. He was difficult to take pictures as he keeps moving his head around. However I was able to take pictures and pet him. He seems to be a nice stallion as some stallions can have bad temperament. In addition I was able to see Love the Chase and her foal, a 3 month old full sister to California Chrome. I was able to take pictures and pet both horses. The foal seems to have a huge curiosity about me. She would follow me around as I was walking. Debbie stated of all the foals that were born this year this filly is the best looking due to its confirmation. Is she another star in the making? Only time will tell. During this tour I got a great education about thoroughbred farm management. In fact I got more out of this tour than any other farm tours I went to in Kentucky. (If you don't like the stench at the Harris Ranch and want to know more about farm management I recommend this tour.) Even though I didn't take a picture the farm has a track where two year old horses are training. I was able to see some young horses that came from training. These horses are soon to be heading to the racetrack. I went inside the stallion barn not only to see the stalls of the stallions but also the breeding area. I also went to the foaling barn where the mares give birth. Debbie informed me that after a foal is born once it leaves the stall for good the stall is sanitized. I also saw a schedule of a mare that gave birth yesterday. I thought I was at the mother baby department at a hospital. LOL. In addition to Lucky Pulpit I was able to see other stallions at the farm. Due to the success of California Chrome will California see resurgence in thoroughbred breeding? Will Harris Farms have another national success like California Chrome? Lucky Pulpit is a prime example how blue-blooded stallions born in Kentucky are servicing stud duties in California. This helps the quality of California bred horses. However I think those answers will lie with another stallion Heatseeker, a Grade 1 stakes winning blue-blooded stallion born in Ireland but stood at stud in Kentucky for a couple of years, who resides at the farm. Just be careful you don't get close to him as he's considered the meanest stallion at the farm. Thank you Debbie for the tour as I appreciate how informative you were. Congratulations to Harris Farm for the success this year. Good luck to California Chrome next Saturday at the Belmont Stakes. Whatever happens next Saturday you and Harris Farms made Californians proud. As Californians we're proud of items that come from California such as wine, produce, seafood, and technology. You can add California Chrome to that list as he was made in California.
