This definitely isn't a place I'm going to revisit anytime soon. Prices on so much are a mystery, and I don't have the patience to keep taking whatever looks interesting up to the front counter to find out how much it costs. Having picked out two different cans from the beer cave, the clerk at the front counter rang them up and said "12". I paid, then headed into the L.A. night.... At a red light just down the road, I looked at the receipt: $12.93. Then it hit me that these didn't ring up correctly, and saying just "12" felt deceptive. Thankfully, I had asked for a receipt. One beer rang up as $5.39, and the other $6.39. Back at Circus Liquor a minute later, I pointed out to the same clerk that he had overcharged me... one can absolutely had a $4.99 sticker on it (and I, incorrectly, thought they both did). Pointing out the pricing discrepancy, he pointed at the can that didn't have a sticker and said "That one is $5.99." The receipt showed neither beer rang up at that price. Luckily, an older gentleman also working behind the counter stepped in at that moment and asked how we could resolve this. He offered for me to swap out the $4.99 beer for one more expensive to make up for the difference. That was fair enough for me. Yet, with the lack of prices, I looked for a fair trade and felt like my choices were limited. There are plenty of other options around and plenty that are completely transparent with their prices. Thus, I have no plans to stop by Circus Liquor again. If you do visit, I strongly recommend you ask for a receipt and check it! A second star is given only because the older clerk did a good job of diffusing the situation. The other guy was no help. read more

Yes, it's from a scene from Clueless and some nights it's taco night on side of their parking lot and other festivities, which is a vibe too. Most of the staff are cool and look out which is much appreciated; they have a wide range of merch and selection depending on what you came in for. Yes, this was in Clueless. No, I didn't get left out here. What I do come here for is to get lottery tickets and to check out the beverage area. I swear I get the same guy every time I go, and he is super cool. Parking lot is out front and a little awkward depending on which entrance you come from but at least they have a decent sized lot. On Sundays (maybe other days), there is a taco stand or something that sets up shop outside so make sure you don't run into it, and instead, check out what they have to offer. read more

It's mostly a liquor store but they've got craft beers, wines, interesting soft drinks, and some snacks, too. It's not huge but they make good use of their space. The outside looks truly divey but it's not a sketchy business at all. Bread and Breakfast--the breakfast burrito kings--are set up in their parking lot. I don't know that I'd go out of my way to come here but if you're in the area, it's worth checking out. Plus, you get to see their insane clown sign. read more

It's hard to miss the 32-foot neon-vintage clown sign in the parking lot of Circus Liquor. It's iconic and has been featured in several movies (Clueless, Alpha Dog, Blue Thunder...). I can't tell you how many times I have driven by this place but never once stopped by. I happened to be there one day to pick up some pizza from Pablito's Pizza, which is located in the parking lot next to Pablito's Tacos, so while I was waiting for my pies I decided to go in and check it out. I was impressed with how clean and well organized the place was. They have a wide selection of beer, wine, & spirits (common & obscure) at reasonable prices. They also have weekly specials. There is a walk-in fridge with craft beers. They carry a wide variety of mixers, mini bottles and RTD cocktails. I saw so many products here that I have not seen elsewhere. The two clerks behind the counter were very friendly, as were the other customers that were shopping there. I had a nice conversation with one and another offered to take my photo in front of the clown sign when he saw me snapping a pic. I enjoyed browsing through the store and picked up a few RTD cocktails to go with my pizza. (The Blue Marble Cosmo was surprisingly good 15% ABV.) Next time I'm in the area I won't just drive by, I'll stop in to see what is new or on sale and try some other RTD cocktails. Tip: Plenty of parking in the lot. read more

Absolutely the most overpriced liquor store I've ever been to. I bought a pack of Budweiser here and immediately noticed it was much more expensive than in other nearby stores. When I asked for a receipt to see how the total was calculated, it didn't include any useful details--no item list, no tax information, and no bottle deposit breakdown. It really felt like they were trying to hide how much they overcharge. The prices are inflated and there's zero transparency. The good: They had a special for 3 wines for $10. They seem to have many specials and deals. My husband asked them to de-cork the wine we bought for us because we were going to drink it at the shabu shabu spot across the street and they happily obliged. They even threw in a few NYC heavy wine stopper for free! It was nicely packaged in a gift box. The bad: The pinot noir I got wasn't smooth tasting but maybe I just chose a bad one. The interesting: I absolutely love their ginormous vintage neon sign of a giant clown. I have gone and picked up wine at Circus liquor for 30 years. Tonight I called.9/20/24 at 9:30 PM. A young lady picked up the phone. I told her I was having a hard time ordering online and she told me it was my problem not hers. I asked her to help me and she hung up on me. I tried calling back several times and she would let the phone ring or would pick it up and not answer very rude. The owner needs to know that and unless I get a response, I will never shop there again and I have told many of friends what my experience was tonight.. as we all know we can get wine or whatever we want anywhere else, but customer service is important and this young lady doesn't need to be in this position. read more

As far as a neighborhood liquor store goes, in a once seedy but now eclectic part of town, this place is on the rise. There is a nice big parking lot with wide spaces - so one can swerve into a spot totally drunk. The staff is mostly Mexican and Armenian, so they understand and don't judge. The store is well lit, with aisles that have shelves of booze like protective walls - so one can easily navigate that difficult straight line. And There is an exclusive-access walk-in imported Ale chamber, so the distinguished boozer can not only feel like a Habsburg while selecting the most discounted imported brew they can find, but the chill also keeps that nasty sweat off, that makes them look like they are dying of a heart-attack. The staff here is great and knowledgeable. The selection is super-fine. So when you are ready to join that 5-minute-to-closing-time run, of the ZZ Top-like bearder "drinkers" sniffing out their last 12 pack of the night - this is the place for you. Although you found all the staple brands of libations as you would in the big box stores, there were a few that you wouldn't. Of course, the prices were slightly higher due to economies-of-scale, so hopefully the convenience and service won customers over. If anything, I always loved to support local businesses and shop small. Don't be fooled by the ridiculous, dirtied sign out front. Contrary to its outward appearance, this place is pretty clean and organized on the inside. My friend and I stopped in one night and to our surprise actually found both an obscure wine and an obscure seasonal beer we can rarely find. They really have a great selection of anything alcohol related. They even have a bunch of different snacks so you can plan for the inevitable drunken munchies. Circus Liquor has a surprising beer selection for its location. However it gets low points because it's so damn close to Vendome Liqours on Cahuenga that has a selection few (no) stores can match. If you live within walking distance of Circus Liquors and you're drunk already then its worth choosing Circus over Vendome, otherwise though I'd say drive on down to Vendome. Alternatively if you are a fan of huge signs installed decades ago in the shape of a frightening clown adorned with fluorescent lights then you might choose to support this store. It's definitely worth driving by at night to pretend Circus Liquors is your neighbor and they've decorated their asphaulted front yard for Halloween. Yes.
