My wife and I come to City Barbeque about once a month and have always been very happy with our experiences. They are extremely customer friendly at this location. I'll give a few examples. Opening week, I had left my seat to refill my drink and one of the bus boys threw away my plate which had a few fries remaining. I got back to my seat and he was so apologetic, despite my insisting that it was alright. He said I'd get a free order of cheese/bacon fries upon my next visit. Very kind. Every time we get the very large take-out packs, City Barbeque includes quality tongs and serving spoons that are highly reusable. Another time, when they forgot to include the buns on a take-out sandwich platter, they snail mailed me a handful of free side and $'s off coupons. The City Barbeque rewards program (free to join) is pretty good. It seems like every other time I go in, I'm getting $5 off my order. Not too shabby. On top of all this, the food is very good. I enjoy all the unique sides available. My wife loves their ribs. They offer 3 different barbeque sauces. I typically select the brush fire, but they're all good. Nice restaurant. Good rustic feel. But that is about all that is good. Had the Brisket and sausage. Brisket was dry and over cooked. Not tender at all. Sausage was just ok, nothing special. Baked beans were terrible. Too much thick sauce. The vinegar slaw was pretty good. But it was way overpriced. I was eating alone and the meal was over $20. Probably not coming back here any time soon. And also, how many times do you go to a Bbq place and do not smell it cooking when you walk up. There was just a mediocre crowd for a Friday night. Consistently good comfort food at a fair price. BBQ fans in Cincinnati (including myself) will be quick to point out that you should be eating Eli's, but for a great go-to option with locations convenient to most parts of town and NKY, City is a great backup. Good BBQ comes from the cooking process, and they've got that down to a science. Never had a meal under or overcooked. If it's your first visit, consider getting the sampler. Big enough to split with someone, and you'll get a nice variety of meats. If you know you're a pulled pork fan, get that. The only things that I'm not on board with here are the brisket and the ribs. Sure, those are the BBQ staples, but for your money the pulled pork, sausages, turkey, or chicken are all just as good if not much better. Sides, sauces and accompaniments tie it all together. Old fashioned sodas and good lemonade help round out the experience. The greens, sweet potato casserole and mac & cheese are all great choices. The fries are fresh cut, skin on, and delicious, though I basically treat them as a vehicle for all the great sauces. Fried pickles are a pricey little novelty, but I'd stick to the dills you get for free. Some BBQ lovers frown on sauces in general, but again, this stuff is tender stands up well without. The 'swine wine,' vinegar and spices, is fantastic on pork product. Mustard sauce is great on pork or turkey. The house original and brushfire bbq sauces are both fantastic on everything, and they have all bbq sauces available warm near the counter (highly recommend.) read more

Service is great and even a line 20 people deep moves very quickly. Corn pudding is the best thing on the menu, and I just get 2 sides of that along with the pulled pork non-sandwich. I've tried other sides, and they've all been fine, but they pale in comparison to the corn pudding goodness. Granted, I need to eat nothing but leafy greens for a few days because even though it contains corn, it's in no way a healthy salad. Worth it, though. Vegetarians and picky eaters can make do with sides and salads, but I wouldn't make this a destination if the majority of your dining companions aren't carnivores. My picky kid was happy with her plain bun, side salad, and applesauce - after removing the onions from the salad, she made a "salad sandwich" and just went with that. I was heart broken when Hyde Park's location closed, this location however is even better for me. I love the food because you it's good BBQ that you can get for a good price. I wouldn't say it was better than a high class BBQ joint but it's still a very good BBQ joint. I love how they have warmed sauce for everyone which is a nice touch to your food. The corn bread is one of my favorite items from here along with the baked beans. The pulled chicken is really good as well. This location is always clean and has a VERY friendly staff. I was wearing a UC shirt one day and they gave me two dollars off my dinner platter because it was Tuesday and they give a discount for people wearing UC gear. read more

Hit City Barbecue last night while traveling on business. Had the Chicken breast sandwich with 2 sides: Green Beans and Hush Puppies. Meal was very good, chicken extremely tender. Barbecue sauce was Bourbon and it was good as well. Restaurant would have received a higher grade from me except for 2 things. Person taking my order acted like he would rather be anywhere but there and I got the sense he felt he was doing me a favor by waiting on me. 2nd thing was while using the mens restroom following my meal, it was not in a good state. Hmm where do I start... City Bbq is by far not the best bbq I've had in Cincinnati, But it's not the worst. I got the chicken wing/breast meal with mac&cheese and potato salad as sides (Given that the green beans and greens were cooked with pork which was a downer for me) The Mac& cheese wasn't satisfying at all, and the potato salad tasted store bought but wasn't bad. I gave three stars because the chicken was actually very tasty and tender. My friend that joined me got the baked beans which were amazing, and I like the laid back atmosphere. its a decent place for a quick bite to eat. read more

So, why is a vegetarian reviewing a BBQ joint? Well, because I can. LOL! Anyway, the BF and I ate here a couple of weeks ago. I had researched beforehand and knew that they had sides I could eat; however, upon talking to the cashier, I discovered they had a big salad. So, I ordered the big salad (it is really huge!), some mac and cheese, and cornbread. The BF ordered some BBQ turkey, coleslaw, and potato salad. Service was fairly quick (it was a late Saturday afternoon, so no crowd), but they forgot my mac & cheese. I had to go back to the counter and ask for it. Now, for the food. I will say that the premium salad was a lot bigger than I expected and it was really good with Romaine lettuce, dried cranberries, cheese, and cucumbers (it also includes onions, but I didn't want those). It had a good amount of all the ingredients and was plenty for a meal just by itself. I got the apple cider vinegar dressing...love it. So, if I were rating City Barbecue on the salad alone, it would get much higher than two stars. However, we ordered other food. The corn bread was pretty tasteless and on the dry side, quite a disappointment. As for my mac & cheese, well, I'm not sure how you can screw something as simple as that up, but City Barbecue sure did. It was the most bland, tasteless mac & cheese I'd ever eaten. They would've been better off serving boxed Kraft. As for the BF's food, he said it was "meh." The barbecue sauces are on the table, so you just get the seasoned, smoked meat with no sauce. I don't think he was impressed with any of the sauces he tried. He said the potato salad tasted like it had egg in it, so I didn't even taste it. He didn't like it. The coleslaw, a vinegar coleslaw, was okay. I've had better and I've had worse. The BF liked it best of the three items he had to eat...sad that the barbecue at a BBQ joint didn't make it to the top. If I wanted a big salad and was really hungry, I would go back and get that salad, mainly because of the apple cider vinegar dressing. Stumbled across this place and am happy I did. Had the brisket, green beans and collards-- and thoroughly enjoyed them. The brisket was "the full cut", so had that yummy layer of burnt fat on the outside, and was moist and tender. The veggie sides were killer! Nice atmosphere-- I went on a Monday and it was nice to see the dining room was full of families and couples enjoying themselves. Definitely hit the spot. This was my first time in Cincinnati. After a long day of traveling, I stopped in to City BBQ for my first & only meal of the day. Truly fulfilling. The staff was extremely friendly. I ordered the half slab of St. Louis ribs, pulled pork sandwich, fries, Texas toast, and corn bread. Pleasantly stuffed spreading the meal over two sittings. I have eaten here twice now. Both times, I found it moderately tasty but lacking a certain oomph. Maybe I'm a barbeque snob but I don't understand the lines out the door the past couple of weeks. The sauce is fair, the meat is appropriately cooked, and the portions are decent sized (but not huge). I've tried all the major meats offered here except the chicken. They all are well made. It's hard to put a finger on, but there just wasn't anything special or any dish that stood out. It's good food but I don't see the place being one I'll visit regularly while I'm in Cincy. read more

First time here and I decided to get the City Sampler which is 4 meats and 2 sides. Being from NC/SC and now living in Cincinnati the thing I miss the most is good BBQ. I've eaten at quite a few places in the area and City Barbecue is the best I've had. Solid selection of different meats etc. The Mac and Cheese is just okay and the collard greens are decent. The Brisket was the best in the area along with the Pulled Pork. The smoked turkey and pulled chicken didn't have a lot of smoke flavor but was still very good. Another bonus is they have Cheerwine in glass bottles which is one of the best soft drinks ever made. I didn't try any of their sauces so I can't comment on them. read more
